When friends lose the benefits, can the friendship be saved?
Love Me Like A Rock
With the right art tools, there's almost nothing Austin can't make real. Except an official relationship with his best friend, rowing teammate and occasional hookup, Vinnie.

Emotional and sexual frustration fuel a spark between Austin and Sean, the nude model in drawing class. After a quick and very dirty encounter, all the reasons Austin has been waiting for Vinnie go fuzzy in his mind.

But if Austin can't get his head and his heart on the same page, he could lose both his friend, and his lover.

Hard Candy
Vincent always assumed he and Austin would eventually end up together. But now that Austin's in love with another man, Vinnie is at a loss.

After the world's most awkward one-night stand with Bryan, a dance major, Vinnie is drawn to his vibrant spirit and calm center.

Physically, the rowing jock and the glittery dancer can match each other stroke for booty pop. But for the lovers to meet on common ground, they'll have to find a way to get moving in the same direction.

Between a Love and a Hard Place includes two novellas about roommates and best friends with benefits, Austin and Vinnie. Both men need to step outside their comfort zone and ditch the "benefits" to find their HEA.

Book 6.1, Love Me Like a Rock, is Austin's story and should be read first.

Fun-loving Austin falls for a ginger geologist and never looks back. Austin and Sean can't keep their hands off each other, and Sean is the steady rock Austin needs.

Read my review of Love Me Like a Rock.

Book 6.2, Hard Candy, is Vinnie's story.

Serious Vinnie finds a man who completes him, but he's nothing like Vinnie imagined. Dancer and yoga aficionado Bryan may be sweet like candy, but he has a will of steel.

Read my review of Hard Candy.

I rated each book 4.25 stars, but they are even better together.

Rounding down only because I would have preferred a whole lot more of these two couples.

I freaking love this series. Aside from stories that are bound to suck me in and warnings that amuse, I never really know what to expect from Amy Jo Cousins, or the books that make up the Bend or Break series. Ms. Cousins excels in writing the unexpected—real-life romances about decidedly imperfect men and women (that’s a shout out to dear Steph), who are struggling to find themselves, and their place, in a world that’s not always kind.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place comprises book six, Love Me Like a Rock and book seven, Hard Candy in the series. I knew these novellas would be about Rafi’s room and crew-mates, Austin and Vinnie, who’d had a rocky best-friends-with-benefits thing happening through Level Hands, but beyond that…I knew nothing. I went in mostly blind, gleaning a little info from the blurbs, and found myself immediately sucked it—shock horror…not—and utterly enthralled.

These men are not perfect pod-people. Austin is short, Vinnie’s a grumpy asshole most of the time, Bryan is very over-the-top and Sean is apparently a little hairy. But you know what I loved? ALL OF THAT. These men are not perfect, but they are perfectly human. These stories feel like real-life, because Ms. Cousins doesn’t shy away from the messy entanglements that come with new relationships, awkward sex encounters and insecurities, and low self-esteem. Both of these stories—one that focuses on Austin and Sean, and one that focuses on Vincent and Bryan—take us through the stresses that a pair of former-best-friends-with-benefits-but-still-best-friends experience as they navigate their way through major changes.

Mistakes are made. Communication is…poor. The sex is great, but not central—more like a natural progression of these very raw and authentic relationships. But what IS central is the connection that they feel to one another. Good or bad, toxic or helpful, these men made my brow furrow and my heart flutter as I walked with them through this new, kind of scary thing. They had to learn to let go of what they’d longed for or expected and embrace the future, and that’s not always easy. It came with questions, problems, missteps and some unwelcome revelations about who they are and how they act. And I couldn’t get enough of it.

Once again, Ms. Cousins has given me a book—two quick and easy to read, but not EASY, novellas—that drew me in completely. She gave me a glimpse of what fictional real-life is like and made these men likeable and understandable in their actions, even when they were wrong or acted like jerks. I didn’t want to put it down, even when I was annoyed or frustrated. But then, I guess I should have expected that… ~ Beth 5 stars

I've enjoyed every book in this series, some more than others, but each one has been a fun smooth read with interesting characters. In this duo, I particularly liked seeing Austin begin to value himself and find a guy whom he could give everything he has to offer. Then I loved seeing Vinnie bowled over by someone so far from what he expected, and to a degree he hadn't thought possible. Vinnie is one of those people for whom desire is really tied up in becoming emotionally attached. It was a fun ride to watch, despite a little bit of a fast hit-by-lightning start to it. The two stories back to back show that where you start, and what you think you want with your first crush, may be simply preparing you to recognize love when you eventually find it. Bryan's combination of fabulous and borderline gender-fluidity, along with his will of steel and self-respect, made him a great character to watch as he opened Vinnie's eyes.

I'd say 5 stars for Austin and Sean and probably 3 / 3.5 stars for Vinnie and Bryan.

I love this whole series and what Ms Cousins with each story is different from the previous, yet real and full of feels in its own way.

This is a joint review of the two novellas, Love Me Like a Rock and Hard Candy, included in this volume. These are the stories of Austin and Vinnie who are roommates and teammates to Denny and Raffi from Level Hands. We saw just glimpses of both of them in this book but I got the idea that they will end up as a couple eventually.

Now, since I stalk Amy Jo Cousins on all social media, a while back I came upon her sharing an excerpt of her WIP which clearly showed that Vinnie and Austin will get their stories told but they will end up with different partners. To say I was surprised would be an understatement but I was also excited to see who she would pair them with.

So, here we are now, starting with Austin, who met the geologist Sean posing as a nude model for the art students in college.

In two words, I absolutely loved their romance. In more detail, I found it very emotional and intense. Being in Austin’s head was such a pleasure, seeing his journey from getting over Vinnie (passing through the stage admitting that things with Vinnie are not working for him, which is hard when this is the only thing you know about love/relationships. As usually, Amy Jo Cousins is a master of presenting the angst and emotional turmoil of young people, finding out who they are and what they want from life/love. It takes a hard and painful look at oneself and one’s relationship experience to admit that you are not happy with what you have and want more.

And it was Sean, opposite to Vinnie and in many respects to Austin (I’ll just say 'camping' camping here) who helped him realize things about himself. I liked how their relationship developed smoothly and naturally. There was not forced change, no need to be different, just the gradual realization that what they had between them made them both happy. It may not have been what either of them expected initially, or in Austin’s case, not something he was actively searching for, but it was just what they needed.

On to Vinnie’s story now. I admit initially I was more interested in Vinnie than Austin, he appeared an enigma, not too much into sex, super focused and organised, a bit of a bore, yet a loyal friend and teammate.

I enjoyed discovering more about him but ultimately ended loving Austin’s romance more. I shouldn’t be comparing them because they are so radically different though in the end they achieved the same goal, made Austin and Vinnie happy and satisfied with their lives, something that never happened when they were together.

Vinnie appeared cold and kind of disinterested, only initiating intimacy with Austin after he had finished his more important tasks and he had had a few drinks (for courage). But he was different with Bryan, we saw his vulnerability, his insecurity and I found this really touching.

Bryan was an unlikely match for Vinnie – out and proud, flamboyant, someone who could never pass for straight and who didn’t even want to. He had his own demons and fears to deal with but he was so good for Vinnie.

Despite the initial impressions they turned out to be more compatible than anyone would have thought – sexually, emotionally. They also challenged each other and this was good for them, a way to find their place, very much like Austin, Vinnie learned what he actually liked and wanted in life/love and got the courage to state it openly and go for it.

At times I felt Bryan pushed him too much, too far, making Vinnie act of character and out of his comfort zone. It could be seen as necessary for him to better understand himself and become more confident/comfortable with himself but it found it too much. This is just a minor quibble in a rich story which I very much enjoyed it.

Fans of the Bend or Break series wouldn't want to miss these two excellent additions to the series! And if you haven't read any of Amy Jo Cousins' books before, what are you waiting for?

This is a lovely pairing of a romance.

We get two best friends Austin and Vinnie who are not good romantic partners for each other. They each find love that helps them grow and become their richer selves.

I enjoyed Austin and Sean romance a great deal. I do wish that we had been in Sean's head. He was a great character I loved how he went after his crush on Austin. This is a wonderful coming of age story for Austin where he learns to love and be loved. Sexy too with lots of fun moments.

Vinnie and Bryan's romance is a bit more moody. As they come together to trust as well as like each other the tenderness of the romance comes in. There is an intersting discussion of sexual desire that I wish had more page time but overall I was really happy with this queer New Adult Romance.

The overlap and braid of the two love stories makes this book special.

I think these books work best together, so I'm writing my review on the duology. I kind of think either story would be almost disappointing without the other, and that's probably the point. I love reading romance, but these two books together also reads as a story about friendship and finding out how to be friends in the best way you can. I love how my friendships evolve through my life, and these two books tell a story of...evolving friendship in different life phases. And I mean college boyfriends could or could not be a forever kind of deal (well, these two totally are, ofc), but childhood/youth friends are a part of you for life ;-)

I love Amy Jo Cousins' writing for being so consistently good and solid (which might sound boring, but it's one of the ressons I always look forward to some good quality reading when she releases something), and still inspired when it comes to her characters' flaws and inner journeys.

I also love how she writes the awkwardness of sex so well. That makes the connections feel so real, and makes me hopeful that some of the magic she writes about could happen to real people as well.

Gah. This cover. If you follow me on social media, you've no doubt seen my fangirling over my amazing cover artist, Kanaxa. She is my cover art fairy godmother and she's outdone herself with this one.

BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE is a duology, containing both LOVE ME LIKE A ROCK (Austin's story) and HARD CANDY (Vinnie's story). If you're a paperback fan, this is the one you want, because LMLaR and HC will only be available in ebook. The duology will come out as an ebook on 3/22, with the paperback following not too long afterward, I believe.

I knew when I was writing LEVEL HANDS that I'd end up writing about Rafi and Denny's suitemates. I just didn't think it would be this much fun. ;)

Sneak peeks and giveaways of all three books will be happening in my newsletter over the next couple of months. Sign up at http://eepurl.com/YdVW1 if you want in on that goodness!

Between a Rock and a Hard Place is a duology consisting of two complete standalone stories, Love Me Like A Rock and Hard Candy. All can be purchased digitally, but only the duology is available in paperback.

Love Me Like A Rock (Bend or Break #6)

This standalone romance focuses on Austin, a secondary character in the previous Bend or Break series books, and a member of the rowing team. He’s got a friends with benefits relationship with Vincent going on, but it’s getting pretty stale, as while Austin has had stronger feelings for Vincent, he seems to have been waiting forever for Vincent to return those feelings. While in limbo on that front, he meets Sean, a model in one of his art classes. Sean is the opposite of any guy Austin’s ever been attracted to before, the kind of guy who thinks a weekend roughing it away from the city is heavenly. They’ve got very different backgrounds, with Austin having grown up in a wealthy but cold family unlike Sean’s poorer affectionate one. Will Austin give a relationship with Sean a chance to flourish or keep holding out for Vincent to consider him as a more than just a friend?

I really enjoyed this story! If you’re worried about cheating or a three way triangle, you don’t need to be, as from the start of the story Austin and Vincent are already in limbo with their friendship (and sometime sexual relationship). While Austin’s had stronger feelings for Vincent, he’s been waiting forever for Vincent to return them, and is finally realizing that maybe it’s never going to happen. It’s in this mode that he meets Sean, posing nude for an art class, and experiences a first for him – being turned on by the model (how embarrassing!). But when Sean indicates that he returns that attraction, they share some smoking hot sex. Austin is withholding himself though, not willing to commit fully to a relationship, unlike Sean who is all in from the start. I loved that Sean was comfortable expressing his feelings for Austin and made it clear that he was interested in something more than just a fling. And I liked that he forces Austin out of his comfort zone, bringing him on his outdoor camping trips and sharing his love of nature (this makes for some very funny scenes, by the way). They are definitely opposites, but both have wonderful qualities to bring to the table. While Austin sometimes comes across as having an entitlement chip on his shoulder, Sean is quick to bring him back to earth. As expected the scenes with the rowing team and the camaraderie of the guys make for lots of laughs even amidst the emotional drama of Austin having to decide whether he will give up waiting for Vincent for the man who wants him in the here and now. 4.5 stars for this sexy and entertaining story.

Hard Candy (Bend or Break #7)

On the heels of book 6 of the Bend or Break series (all of which can be read as standalones), in which Austin finally found someone willing to commit to him 100%, Vincent finds himself in his own kind of limbo. He’d always pictured himself eventually ending up with Austin, though he never made an effort to change the status quo. But that ship has sailed, and while he and Austin are still good friends (they’ve been friends too long to lose that, even though it’s not the same closeness that they used to have), he’s got no one on the horizon with whom he’d consider having a relationship – and certainly not dance major Bryan, the kind of effeminate, vocal, gay man who is everything Vincent is definitely NOT looking for in a relationship. So he had a failed one night stand hookup with him when he was drunk – clearly he hadn’t been in his right mind to begin with. Only, when he sees Bryan again, he’s struck by the same attraction he had for him the first time, and this time with no drink in sight. Proposing a little fling with Bryan on the side sounds good, but Bryan’s got his pride and he’s not going to take kindly to a secret affair. Will Vincent man up and admit that he wants more than a few nights in the sack or will his ingrained conditioning to keep his homosexuality on the down low cause him to lose out on a man who wants more?

I loved this story for its characters contrasts. Bryan is the stereotypical gay man – flamboyant, great dancer, outspoken. He’s not afraid of being gay, of telling people he’s gay, of acting gay. It’s resulted in some challenges for him, bullying from different avenues but that just makes him more determined to be out and proud. Vincent is the complete opposite – he’s a quiet, conservative man, from a family that views his ‘condition’ as acceptable only as long as it’s not made public. For Vincent to openly date Bryan flies in the face of everything he’s done up to then and everything that is expected from him, from both his family and his friends. Not that his rowing team doesn’t know that he’s gay (because most of them are too), but he’s the one that camouflages himself well with his straight friends. So the first hurdle for him is acknowledging that he has feelings for Bryan, and accepting that if he wants a real relationship with him (and not just some backroom antics) he’s going to have to accept Bryan for who he is, flamboyant dance queen. There is a lot of emotion in this story, as Bryan will only take being hidden for so long, and Vincent knows that he’s making decisions that are going to affect his future happiness. They have definite chemistry, and their love scenes are super sexy. The story plays out so well that I kept wanting to turn the pages faster and faster even as I wanted to slow down and savor Vincent’s gradual acceptance and understanding of his and Bryan’s needs and feelings. It was a wonderful, heartwarming romance about breaking down stereotypes while building a relationship. 4.5 stars.

Love Me Like a Rock was cute and I enjoyed Austin and Sean.

Hard Candy. What a snoozefest. Nothing particularly wrong with it, but no tension nor interest either. Also, what a way to buy into stereotypes. Of course Vinnie the Korean American is repressed and sexless and that Bryan is the sassy, femme-y African American.

First of all, can we all just stare at that cover for a minute? I swear, you put a hot dude with a beard on a cover and I can not resist.

This book is actually two novellas wrapped up in one book, Love Me Like a Rock is Austin and Sean’s story and Hard Candy is Vinnie and Bryan’s story.

Austin and Vinnie are best friends with occasional benefits. Like really occasional. Austin would like more, but can’t seem to break out of the lover on the side role where Vinnie has firmly placed him. He’s okay for now, thinking Vinnie will come around eventually. Then he meets Sean during a live model art class and the sparks fly between the two. Sean gives him everything Vinnie doesn’t. His time, his patience and his undivided attention. I loved everything about these two and their romance. Everything. If I have one complaint it’s that their story wasn’t longer.

Then there’s Vinnie, who I didn’t really know and didn’t care for the off-hand way he treated his best friend/lover. That is until he meets Bryan and I realized he hasn’t been purposefully ignoring Austin, he just has an extreme amount of anxiety in social situations and needs a regimented schedule to keep him on task. He was taking Austin for granted sure, but I don’t think he even realized it. Bryan is his complete opposite, yet together they are wonderful and fascinating and absolutely fantastic.

Two stories, one book, I promise you will be completely satisfied. If you are new to this series both stories can be read as stand-a-lones, yet I’m pretty sure you’ll want to go back and start at the beginning.

Favorite Quote:

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping you’re gonna change your mind at some point about this casual thing.” Sean switched to sitting cross-legged, his knee pressing against Austin’s. “I like you, Austin. A lot. But I’m no trying to fuck with your head. I can wait. It’s worth it. The waiting.”

Love Me Like A Rock

Okay, so let's start with Vinnie and Austin, because they are really the centerpieces to these two novellas. Vinnie and Austin have been hooking up only when Vinnie wants to. It's not a equal relationship.

When Austin meets Sean during a drawing session, Sean opens Austin's eyes to a whole new world. A world where he is desired. A world were he can have a relationship rather than just a hookup. Even though Sean throws Austin out of his element, Austin is willing to take that step with Sean.

There is a whole lot of heat between these guys, and you know what happens next...Vinnie starts taking an interest in why Austin isn't so available anymore, forcing Austin to make a decision as to what sort of world he wants to live in.

I loved this story. It's a simple story that I'd guess most everyone has to face at some point in their life. I liked that about it.

Hard Candy

And then there's Vinnie's story. Unsettled by Austin's new relationship, he opens his eyes to the world around him. When he meets Bryan, his world changes too.

Bryan opens his eyes to true sexual desire, and schools him on how to treat people, which Vinnie hadn't given much thought to in the past. I adored Bryan, and him with Vinnie made sense to me. Opposites do attract!

Of course, the road to true love isn't always easy, and Vinnie has to face a few truths about himself and what he wants in his life. There's an awesome scene where Bryan and Vinnie meet Vinnie's parents that pushes Vinnie to make some decisions about who he wants to be. This was my favorite of the two stories.

There were many elements to these novellas that reminded me why I love this series. It tackles some basic new adult situations with sensitivity and respect. Each installment gets better and better. Both stories can be read standalone and I recommend this series.

This is actually 2 novellas about best friends Austin and Vinnie. They have been friends since they met as freshman at boarding school. They are not in a relationship, but they do have a friends with benefits agreement.

In the first novella, Austin is tired of waiting for Vinnie to notice him. He befriends Sean, a geology grad student who also models for his nude drawing class. They start a similar sexual arrangement, which over a semester turns into more. On the verge of losing the best relationship he's ever been in, he has an epiphany: why settle for mediocre sex once or twice a month with Vinnie, when Sean actually cares for him and they have smokin' sex?

In Hard Candy, Vinnie meets Bryan after getting a night of drinking when he's vulnerable after losing Austin to Sean. Bryan is the opposite of what Vinnie expected to end up with: he's flamboyant, femme, and out and beautiful (and mixed race). Vinnie turns into his best self with Bryans influence. They have some ups and downs while Vinnie navigates his feelings (lots of internal struggles he needs to get over). In the end, he realizes Bryan is what matters and will fight anyone (including is rowing teammates) who messes with him.

I'm not sure which novella I liked better. I liked Sean and Austin's story initially, but the personal growth Vinnie shows is awesome!

These stories are Austin and Vinnie's stories.... we first meet the pair in Level Hands, as Rafi's suit mates, though not a couple they occasionally shag, but there's no love in it, it's a convenient habit. In the first story Austin meets Sean, a geology student, TA and occasional nude model. Austin is small, but when needed as cox of the men's 8's he can be extremely bossy - and had taken the Top role with Vinnie, but not here. What starts off as no strings turns into a full on relationship that Austin isn't sure how to deal wit at first. But Sean is patient, overly so at times, and kind and willing to wait for Austin to sort his head out.

In the second story, Vinnie is reeling from the loss of his friends with benefits relationship with Austin, and meets Bryan at a party. Bryan, on top of his studies is a dancer, and quite flamboyant (though not so much as Reese in books 1 & 5). Vinnie has to adjust his expectations of friendship, relationships and sex. Their relationship is very sweet, but Bryan is also tough and able to defend himself - he also has a 3 strikes and you are out policy to prevent himself getting hurt.

Love Me Like A Rock - I loved Sean, and I loved Austin with him. I enjoyed watching their relationship build. But I struggled when Austin was away from him. I didn't like how Austin treated Vinnie, and I didn't like that he played the victim and tried to act like he had no ownership in how the non-relationship was. He had moments where it seemed like he got it, but then it seemed fleeting. Even at the end, it didn't dawn on him that he treated Sean the way he acted like Vinnie treated him.

Hard Candy - I really really loved this one. Vinnie owned my emotions. More than I expected he would. I loved Bryan and how he stood up for himself, and he realized when he took it too far and was punishing Vinnie for others' mistreatment of him. I loved how Vinnie TRIED. He knew he if he wanted Bryan he'd have to push himself out of his comfort zone and be present. I even loved Boomer's jerkface self by the end. =)

2 books in one

These books are back to back stories about best friends (with benefits) Austin and Vinnie.

In the first book we get the story from Austins point of view. He's been in love with Vinne for a long time but has gotten quite tired of waiting for Vinnie to feel the same. Then he meets nude model and grad student in geology Sean.
Sean is from the start very clear about his feelings and it's not something Austin is use to. Austin is also the kind of person who can't sit still and who almost always has things racing through his mind but strangely Sean quiets everything down for him. On top of that they have a chemistry neither of them have had with anyone else.

In the second book we get to see things from Vinnies perspective and even if it's never written out in the book I think it's pretty clear that Vinnie has some sort of mild diagnosis. He can't quite understand all interactions between people and his way of getting stuck in his head and need of scheduling things is everywhere.
Bryan is just perfect for him. From their first moment together Vinnie can't stop thinking about Bryan and he just knows that being with him makes everything feel good.
And I just adore Bryan. The way he always makes it very clear what he thinks and wants, his sass, his vulnerability, his dressing in skirts and wearing lip gloss just draws Vinnie in.

These 2 book was my favourite ones in the series and both couples are so good together.

Loved the diversity! Excellent series

This series was wonderfully written! Diverse characters that drew me in and held my interest. This book focused on bffs with benefits Austin and Vincent and the men they fell in love with. I thought Vinnie and Austin would end up together but I’m glad I was wrong. Austin and Sean were perfectly suited. Sean was the calm to Austin’s storm. Vincent was uptight and rigid, Bryan was soothing and calm while being fierce and femme too! This pairing was unique but worked so well...I couldn’t get enough! I can’t wait to read more from this author!

Interesting dynamics.

Austin and Sean were adorable; Vinnie and Bryan uncomfortable. I got the first story much more than the second, probably because it felt less forced. It would have helped me for more backstory on Bryan and Vinnie because their characters were more caricature.

From safety to vulnerability

This book is the sixth in a series. It is the first that I read. Two close friends since private boarding school discovered their homosexuality together at a young age. They have remained together less out of love and more because it is familiar. The book is actually two short novels, the story of each moving into an intimate loving relationship.

The first novella here ends kind of too quickly: there's one last fight and resolution that happens in just too few pages. Otherwise though, I enjoyed these and they're otherwise well paced. Vincent resonated for me.

This is a combo of books 6 & 7 in the Bend Or Break series. These can be read as standalone novels. For reader enjoyment and understanding of the series, I recommend reading them in order.

These books are a good choice as a set since they both have characters who must overcome being opposites and find common ground.

I think it is better to review each book separately so here are both of the reviews for these books. (These have been previously posted, but not together.)

Austin has lived in the shadow of wanting his best friend. Finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, Sean is there in all his naked glory. Can Austin move on and find real love?

Sean has been trying to chase after Austin for the better part of a year. Now that he has finally seen him, will the differences tear what he was hoping for in a relationship apart? Sean is trying to convince Austin they deserve a fighting chance.

This series just gets better. Every story is full of sincere, and fun characters. I love learning about the rowing also. These guys must be HOT! I cannot wait for the next installment in the series.

Hard Candy (Bend or Break, #7)Hard Candy by Amy Jo Cousins
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is the 7th book in the Bend Or Break series. This book can be read as a standalone novel. For reader enjoyment and understanding of the series, I recommend reading these in order.

Vincent meets Bryan and his whole view of the world changes. Bryan is everything he is not. Opposites really do attract. Can they make the most of the future?

Bryan has never had to hide who he is or what he does. Why should he have to do that with Vincent? He finds himself drooling over the man, but exasperated a moment later.

This story has so much to it. I was laughing one minute, crying the next. I really felt it all. Cannot wait until the next installment of the series!
