I usually avoid vampire and werewolf books like the plague, but the blurb drew me in and after having read a good dozen or so dreadful contemporary romances, I thought - 'why not try something different for a change'
So I did, and I loved it.
The werewolf is gentle and able to control her 'phasing' and the vampire is one of those - 'I don't do human blood and I'm a good guy' sort of vampire (normally I'd run away screaming 'Sparkly!!) but this story takes place in a different world and I liked the writing so it didn't bother me.
The world building is solid and believable and not 'in your face' and the character development was excellent.
Five stars, because I read through in one go without ever rolling my eyes or going wtf!
I try to avoid paranormal books. I usually don't feel particularly entranced when I read them (maybe it's the Twilight effect). However, this book has a plot that instantly piqued my attention: A werewolf girl named Carys fails an intended assasination on Duchess Samara Andrian while she was in her beast form. Instead of being killed on the spot, she is cruelly fitted with a seemingly unbreakable silver metal collar that scorches her skin that will guarantee surefire death by suffocation the second she tries to phase into her wolf form. Finally, after being bludgeoned in the head, she is unceremoniously tossed into a completely dark dungeon.
Little did Carys know, she heard someone knocking in the adjacent cell and out comes a brick! She realizes her odd cellmate Vandar is not only trying to escape the prison after being personally locked up from false charges, he is a teenage vampire with a complicated past.
In between vicious torture sessions that nearly kill Carys, Vandar tries his best to drag her into his cell where trickle amounts of moonlight help heal her body enough just to stay alive. They are supposed to be mortal enemies, and yet the equally difficult position they ended up in with certain death their only solace entices them to forge a truce... and maybe even more than that.
Some people didn't like it that the prison section of the book is slow, I personally loved it. It's the portion of the book with the strongest character development (Vandar however gets a more interesting story than Carys). I enjoyed Cheree's overall easygoing writing, it kept the story interesting and moved things continuously forward. The flashback scenes are not too many and they carry a huge importance in the plot. Like a few other stories I have read, this book divides chapters between the story told from Carys's and then Vandar's respective POV's.
There is a plot hole in the story regarding the torturer. He is supposed to dispose of Vandar's body until he discovers the truth and sees a familiar looking person throwing themself down a cliff in order to rescue the discarded body bag. He then appears again in the final scenes of the book seemingly oblivious of the events that happened in the cliff. This was a plot hole that should have never happened. The person who disposed of the body could have been any lowly guard.
That said, I would very much enjoy a sequel. This book is supposed to be a part of a trilogy, but so far there isn't any in sight for now. I'll look at some of Cheree's other works and see if the stories are interesting. I like how she writes and enjoyed this book quite a lot despite the plot holes.
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
Vander is imprisoned in his father's castle, for killing his step mother's guards. But he didn't do what they said he did. Months later, a new resident to the cells below the castle force Vander to embrace his destiny. Carys is a werewolf, imprisoned for attempting to kill the Duchess. When Vander gets her tale from her, it appears they are both puppets in a much larger play.
For the most part, I really did enjoy this book. Its different, and different is always good in my opinion.
Vander has his say in the first person, and Carys in the third. I liked that, it was right for these two for their say to be portrayed as such.
What I has some. . . . . . . issues . . . . .with, is Vander himself. He comes across all high and mighty, extremely well educated, corrects Carys' speech really early on, but he is only 17. He comes with a wealth of knowledge, and world wise sayings, and it all felt a little...off to me.
Also, there was talk, late in the book, of a prophecy. That felt kinda chucked in at the end, just to fill space. I needed to hear about that way before it all went down.
BUT!!!
I didn't spot a single spelling mistake, and no editing errors. The story flowed well. There is no sexual content and some violence to Carys when she is being held prisoner, hence the Upper Young Adult tag I'm giving it. I'd let my 15 year old daughter read it, if she took after me in her reading habits, but she doesn't and it pains me so!
The first of a trilogy, and I really REALLY want to read more about Vander and Carys, what happens to them after this, moving forward. What happens to the Duchess now her plans have been thwarted.
3.5 solid stars, round UP for the blog and Amazon.
The story starts off extremely slow. The prince wakes up and is found with dead guards all around him. He is immediately thrown in the dungeon for attempting to kill the duchess (which he didn’t do). Months later, there is a real attempt on the duchess (or so we are led to believe.) The werewolf is caught and put in the dungeon. The slow part is where the story builds, where their relationship builds. It’s probably necessary, but could have been whittled down a bit. It lead up to the greatest ending. I almost put the book down during the slow parts, but then finally got to the good part and was glad I did. I didn’t stop reading until the end. Epic! Loved the ending! I even had epic fantasy music playing while I read. You won’t be disappointed.
I really do love the way Ms. Alsop writes. She makes you feel her characters pain, frustration, rage and love. This is another book that could be a fairy tale you read to your kids or just an enjoyable story for anyone. Carys and Vander are both set-up and thrown in jail. Even though vampires and werewolves have a history of violence and hate, these two learn to work together to get though all the suffering. It was nice and also interesting that Ms. Alsop lets you read about their feelings from their own point of view.
This had all the feels. I smiled and I teared up. My heart broke a little but I am glad for the ending. The only thing I could have wished forvwas an epilogue. Otherwise I liked the ending
Cheree Alsop has the enviable ability to weave words together in a way that's easy and fun to read. However, that's where the enjoyment of this book ended for me.
I liked the concept. I liked the words. The execution of the story, however, was so full of plot holes, WTF moments, and my constant wondering of "why would they do that?!", that I was grateful when the story was over and I could mark it as read.
It had a lot of potential, but could have used an extensive content edit.
Many of the characters, including the antagonists and...well...actually everyone, are caricatures. Their actions are done because they ARE characters fitting a specific role, and it becomes clear from the very beginning the reasons behind what they do don't matter, and nuances that might have made them believable characters are left on the wayside.
The plot remained at a consistent stagnant up until approximately 70% of the way through, when it hurried through events that would have been extremely interesting to see. Personally, I felt this should have been multiple books instead of events crammed into one, but frankly the plot events weren't strong enough for one book, let alone multiples.
I felt Cheree did a great job, however, handling a darker atmosphere with violence while keeping it firmly on the lighter side of fantasy. I also very, very much appreciated the lack of rape threat to the heroine. That was very nice to see.
All around, I would recommend this book to writers looking to learn more about craft and how authors do well on certain things and not on others, but otherwise I would recommend searching for other vampire/werewolf books to get your paranormal fix.
I read the author's Girl from the stars series and enjoyed it, so when I saw this book on promotion deal I decided to try, the story sounded interesting enough.
I almost abandoned the book twice, only after a third of it, it became a bit more interesting and I actually wanted to know what will happen next. The story was slow in the beginning, mostly advanced by conversations or memories and a bit boring and the characters, Vander and Carys are quite simple, one dimensional figures with no twists.
The main characters are a vampire and a werewolf, but I felt it is mostly by title, mostly for Vander. The story also have some holes in the plot, which when discovered did cause me to think how was it possible.
I am not sorry for reading the book, but as it ends without a real cliff-hanger I am not sure I will read the next books.
