True Mates #5

Taming the Beast

Rate this book
**Can be read as a standalone werewolf billionaire shifter paranormal romance book**

The True Mates Series continues as billionaire CEO security expert Sebastian Creed battles his inner beast while trying to keep his desire for genius scientist Dr. Jade Cross from destroying them both.

Shy and nerdy Lycan scientist Dr. Jade Cross has lived a quiet life, surrounded by her work and her research. She prefers proven facts, figures, and hard science and doesn't want complications in her life. But her resolve seems to go out the window every time she crosses paths with the handsome and dangerous Sebastian Creed.

Since rescuing Jade from her mysterious kidnappers, Sebastian has tried hard to stay away from her. But he’s irresistibly drawn to the innocent, delicate beauty and he wants nothing more than to give in to his hunger. When Jade’s life is put in danger once again, Sebastian is tasked with keeping her safe, and he risks everything to make sure no harm comes to her.

But, Sebastian has a secret. The former Marine turned billionaire CEO is hiding a beast inside him, an animal that wants to possess Jade. He must control his desires and wrestle his inner monster or risk destroying them both.

As the evil mages and their leader Stefan, continue their war against the shifters and witches, Jade must walk the fine line between opening herself to Sebastian and preventing him from finding out about the existence of Lycans. With so many secrets between them, can they survive or will they both be caught in the crossfire?

Taming the Beast is a full-length (79,000 words) werewolf paranormal romance with explicit love scenes, naughty language, and shifter suspense action with guaranteed HEA and no cliffhangers!

Although it works as a standalone romance story, this book takes place in the True Mates series. Though not necessary, I recommend you read the rest of the books to understand the world and the main plot.

This was by far the most disappointing book in this series so far. And it's not like I even had high expectations, given the previous books.

The book opens on a scene we'd already seen in Witch's Mate , but this time from Sebastians POV - this was entirely unnecessary and incredibly boring. Not to mention, the women in this scene were all portrayed as obsessed with sex and having no brains, which was simply offensive.

Jade was a completely different character from the previous books, and her characterisation in this book was just all over the place. Sebastian is full of toxic masculinity, not to mention controlling and abusive. So neither of them were likeable, and their romance was boring and unbelievable.

I have to say, five books in and I am well past being sick of the exact same plot with the exact same events happening at the exact same time and the same personalities for all of the main characters, just in slightly different fonts. Once again, there were numerous inconsistencies in the world building (why has the 'power bursting' from people never happened before?), and numerous plot points were just never solved. Not to mention, numerous plot points just didn't make sense - And Sebastian turning into a This made absolutely no sense with the magic system created (even with all it's plot holes), and like, you're telling me no one noticed a around NYC? Nah, I'm not buying it. Honestly, that had to be one of the worst plot 'twists' I've ever read. And for goodness sake, someone please teach this author how to resolve conflicts, because there's so much buildup throughout the book and then all the conflict is resolved in 5 seconds in the most overdramatic way possible, generally with some swooning involved. You can get away with that maybe once, but in every book? Absolutely not.

I really thought I might actually like this one, as I liked these characters in previous books and was interested to see what their dynamic might be, but I was highly disappointed.

The Nerd Gets the Hot Guy

I’ve liked Jade throughout the series and totally loved her in this book. I like seeing the shy nerd fall in love. I loved her way of swearing. For example: “Oh, mother fudger truck a duck.” and “kitten-fudge-ripple-donkey-wanker.” I loved that she and Sebastian are true mates. He’s oh-so-yummy and irresistible. Oh, and mysterious with his unknown beast. Have to admit I predicted the beast from the beginning. I was thrilled to be right because it’s my favorite!

I have to say that this is my favorite book and couple in the series thus far.

Writing quality: Good
Violence: Yes
Sexual content: Yes
Narration: Third person
Plot: Some twists
Mood: Mixture of Light-hearted & Suspenseful
Pace: Fast

This did not work for me. Too much detail about everything. It took away from the story.
First 20% was more about secondary characters than about the main characters.
You may love it.

"Meredith had chosen a strappy and daring dress that was slashed up to her thighs, showing off her long legs. Jade, on the other hand, had chosen a flowing, off-the-shoulder chiffon dress with a sweetheart neckline, which she paired with low-heeled sandals. Meredith styled her long, brown locks into cascading waves down her back and put on some of the makeup they bought for the bachelorette party." (Loc 20%)

“You look nice too, Matt,” Jade said. Tonight, he was dressed more casually in a light gray suit jacket with matching pants and blue shirt opened at the collar to show off the olive-toned skin at his throat. The last time she saw him at Frankie and Grant’s wedding, he was wearing a formal black tux." (Loc 20%)

This is a hard series for me to grade...I have found the plots interesting, but am having challenges with insta lust sex/borderline consent when Alpha Males who are generally nice/supportive get hit with True Mate lust. I am also having trouble with all the Heroines in the series who are also generally confident, capable and nice and then suddenly flip to nervous, or reactive pissy drama queens when stressed, so I find I am reading the books for the stories, but I am skimming over the sex stuff and the pissy scenes. However loved the Hero in this book so final rating is 3.5 Stars.

Rated for mix

Mix of wonderful characters. Like Meri, she is awesome.
The main mate character story could have used some editing. Did not need all the back and forth of the beast and her self hating of her wolf. There is no way the alpha would not know about her blood moon habit. Her. Dad would have spilled.

Would have loved a little more at the end. He would not have asked her (read book for reference to what) but set it up and got job done.

Lastly the logic of where to live is missing. He definitely needs more space.

Beauty and the Beasts

Quiet, little Dr. Cross. Never even been kissed. And Sebastian Creed? Just about as opposite as you can get. Big, aggressive, cranky, and now in charge of her security. Is that a set up or what? It's what. They bash heads, he spoils dates, then when he finally admits he wants to be with her, business happens. Meanwhile, Fenrir has two mages in the cells in the basement. Ones taking, the other, Daric not. Stefan still wants Jade, Sebastian still doesn't know what he's protecting Jade from. And That's gonna blow up in everybody's face. The rest... you'll have to read. NEXT!

"I volunteered to read an advanced review copy of this book".
I'm also glad I did. The story centers on ex-Marine Sebastian Creed, currently the CEO of a prestigious security firm. During one of Sebastian's military tours, he is captured and experimented on, leaving him with an unknown beast within. His security firm is hired to rescue kidnapped, Dr. Jade Cross. Jade is lycan shifter researching witch magic in order to fight against the evil mage,Stefan.
Sebastian and Jade are drawn together and eventually fight Stefan and the "beast" is finally revealed.
Alicia also creates some great side characters that create humor, romance and drama. This story is stand alone, no cliff hanger and also the first of Alicia's books I've read. I'm now buying the first 4 of
the true mates series.

Every time I say I have a new favorite and I have to say it again. Jade and Sebastian are such a contrast but they really work, off the charts chemistry (of course they are true mates!) with a spicy/sweet vibe. The writing in this entire series is phenomenal with a standalone romance story line in each, but interwoven against a larger picture story detailing the wolves’ trials with the mages. This is paranormal heaven with werewolves, witches, mages, irresistible true mates, danger and lots of sweet lovin!

This was a good story that was evenly paced. It has a complex plot. The lead characters were great. I enjoyed the chemistry between Jade and Sebastian. Sebastian is the kind of alpha male that I enjoy reading about. I read an ARC of this book in exchange of an honest review.

I typically don't like jumping into a series. I'm the kinda gal who likes to start from Book One and go straight on through 'til morning. (Sometimes quite literally.) But when this was offered as an Amazon freebie, who was I to say no? And I'm glad I bit.

Author Montgomery crafts an intriguing mythology that had me wishing I'd started from the first book in the series. And well, beginning from the...beginning would have helped me keep all the various character names straight, as I'm crap with names. (But it's nice to see that even the author pokes fun at the large stable of characters, with one in particular lamenting it "made his head hurt trying to remember who was who." I'm right there with you, buddy! Perhaps we can form a support group?) Getting to know the various couples would have cemented them in my ol' noggin easily, I'm sure. Especially since Montgomery keeps things rolling along nicely, with lively, believable dialogue and just enough thrills and action.

This book definitely breaks past the typical "boy meets girl" story, and if what I can glean from the "earlier relationships" here, Montgomery is gearing up for even more suspense. Oh, and there's heat here too y'all. Plenty of funtimes, and those scenes are a whole lot of fun to read too.

My only quibble? At first, Sebastian comes off as an "Edward in 'Twilight'" level stalker, as he follows Jade around. Yes, he's supposed to protect her, and yes he has no real idea what's going on inside him (seriously y'all; if you don't know that these two are gonna be True Mates by the end of the book, this must be your first time picking up a PR...). But he comes off as way too pushy at the start, telling Jade he'll "pick you up at seven, darlin'" when she's expressed reservations, and to "[g]o change, darlin'" when she's wearing something he thinks is too sexy for other people's eyes. Montgomery slowly shifts Sebastian into a man who's more in touch with himself, and more understanding of what Jade needs/wants/deserves, but those first few serious interactions between them left me a bit squicked. But I totally rooted for him as things went on.

I'm hoping to dig into more from Montgomery, especially more stories in this series. She's got a great way of keeping a story fun as a stand-alone, yet giving just enough of an overall arc to keep me wanting to see how it all plays out.

Loved!

This is Dr. Jade Cross' and Sebastian Creed's story.

After Jade was kidnapped in the last book, and Grant hired Creed's Security Company, Sebastian can't stop thinking about the beautiful brunette.

When her lab explodes one morning, and Lara, Meredith, and Jade all get hurt; Grant secretly hired Crews again to follow her around when she's not at work.

When Sebastian was in Afghanistan fighting the war, he was captured and held in a cave for a month. He was tortured by his captors in a daily basis. They would cut his arms, hands, and his chest let in suffer in pain then pour some liquid over the open wounds and chant something. "Free the beast" Since he got back he's has nightmares and he heard a voice inside him that calls "the Beast."

When Jade and Sebastian finally hook up, he ends up hurting her badly. She doesn't look back.

Sebastian knows that Jade and Grant both know who is after them, but they evade his questions. He also knows that something else is going on inside Fenrir.

When Jade and Sebastian get cornered Jade has no choice but to shift after Sebastian gets shot. But after she sees his terrorized and disgusted face, when her wolf gets closer, she realizes that they are over. True Mates or not.

A must read!

Sebastian and Jade

We met Sebastian Reed a few books back but in this book we learn a lot more about him. It was already known that he had a beast inside him. The Lycans didn’t recognise him as one of them and didn’t even realise that he was a shifter. He didn’t even realise it himself! What he did know was that he couldn’t keep his mind off Jade, Fenrir’s scientist, who was researching magic. To Jade’s despair, the first time that she had contact with him she had been kidnapped and was unconscious. The second time she was drunk for the first time in her life and, the next day, didn’t remember meeting him. The third time was just humiliating! She tripped going into the lift and ended up with her backside in the air! Not a promising start, especially since, when she did get introduced, he was the most delectable male she had ever met.
This is a very humorous book with Jade’s two friends, Lara and Meredith, determined to help their geeky scientist! But it’s not all fun and games. The creepy mages just won’t go away and poor Jade finds herself a target once more.
I have to say that the series keeps you hooked!

Never ever start a book with mates, where the male is in a club looking for a quick screw. It’s ruins everything. I can’t stand him now and don’t want to read it. He’s considering screwing the waitress even as he watches the woman he wants, his mate, drink with her friends. Disgusting and doesn’t deserve a mate or a book if it starts with him being a grimy playboy just wants any woman who looks at him. Yuck. He probably has supernatural stds. Good luck Jade and run far away since the night he saved you he was trying to screw a chick at a club. It makes her and their future relationship not special. And everybody wants their love and intimate scenes to be special but we’d all be thinking about how he was just sizing up the waitress for a quick lay while jealous she was dancing on a table nearby. I could vomit right now he’s so sleazy. Romance killed before it could begin. Make the males, men we wish we had. Mates are supposed to be loyal, not considering bedding other after meeting their one. It’s just not right.

I really enjoyed reading the next instalment in this series but when I had finished I felt left down.
The storyline was good, the characters great, the two main H’s a good pairing.
The large amount of minor unneeded information dumped in this story was slowing it down and felt longwinded.
The lack of real action against Stefan and the mages boring. One little battle.
I enjoyed and found amusing the fun of Sebastian chasing Jade all over the place but felt there was a lack of romance and getting to know each other. I can’t put my finger on why their relationship felt off, probably the fact they didn’t seem to trust each other with their own feelings.
Found Jade likeable enough, Sebastian I felt sorry for with what he had been through.
Laughed when Sebastian transformed, that will be interesting in the final book.
Will be reading the last book to finish this off.

From the second billionaire CEO security expert Sebastian Creed saw Dr. Jade Cross’ photo on Grant’s phone, he was all in to help rescue Jade from Stefan and company, though Sebastian didn’t have a clue who had Jade or why. Sebastian got to Jade first and began to stake his claim then though he knew he couldn’t commit. At the same time Jade’s hiding she’s a shifter. Meanwhile, Stefan and his minions aren’t as crippled as Grant and his team think they are. And Jade has a mission.

For this reader’s taste, this was a fun read and a lot to like, Meredith as always was her own party; she, Jade and Sebastian were standouts; Jade and Sebastain’s backstories gave them a lot of complexity, especially with other threads to tend to. Also, the ‘mystery’ element went on just long enough to provide intrigue without not going too far.

Oh my god! This is the best out of the entire series yet!!! I can't stop smiling and i want more... Sebastian and Jade are now my official OTP. I absolutely love their banter and jealous Sebastian is everything. The backstory of Jade and her repressed wolf and how she's blaming herself gets to me and i'm so proud that she manages to summon back her wolf to protect those she loves . And the twist for Sebastian? Bloody genius. I also love the role of Meredith here, she's hilarious and brings so much entertainment. This book has suceeded in bringing out the fangirl in me. Now i want a Sebastian Creed too 😳💕

Should be read in order to get full effect. These books keep getting better.Kept me reading from first to last page. Creed is a hot, sexy, sometimes brooding human? security specialist that gets involved with the shifters of New York. Jade is a brainy scientist and shifter working for the alphas trying to find out how to stop the mange that is trying to kill off the lycans. These two have great chemistry but try to stay away from each other. Lots of great sex,hot alpha men, funny moments and a few twist to keep the story going

Disappointed:(

I was really looking forward to this book in the series. I have read all the previous ones one leading up to this, and couldn't wait to devour this one.... but I just mainly ended up disappointed by it. This book felt .... rushed. There was less overarching plot in this one, numerous typos (sometimes leading to me rereading sentences over again trying to understand what was happening) and Seb & Jade's backstories felt incomplete. I guess there just wasn't as much to this book as I wanted there to be.

Book 5

Dr. Jade Cross is a scientist, wolf shifter, and works for her Alpha's company. The rogue witches want her and they will do anything to get her.
Sebastian is a former Marine and owns a well known security company. He is hired to protect Jade but the chemistry between them is explosive.
Now the mages ( rogue witches) want them both. Can they keep them away and protect their hearts?
Not many errors. Sex. Witches and wolves. And mystery. Good story. Made me laugh.

These books get better and better in this series

I couldn't stop reading this book. I stay up and until I finished it. Jade is a smart strong woman. Sebastian is a hot, sexy ex Marine badass. He owns his own security business. The first time he saw Jade he fell in love with her. They have some hot and passionate sex scenes. But there still is a great storyline. I can't wait to start the next book
