Ian's third novel "London 2012 : What If?" departs from the world of genetics and explores an interesting possibility that Quantum Physics raises:the possibility for parallel worlds to exist alongside each other...and what would happen if a man who wondered what other types of lives he could be living had he made other choices, where unexpectedly to step from one world into another parallel world. "What If" is also an interesting voyage through human emotions, and many readers will find themselves asking themselves similar questions that the lead character does as they read the book. As with both "The Crown of Thorns" and "The Orlando File", at the end of the book the reader is left thinking...and different readers may take away different views on how the novels did, or should have ended... This is the second time i have read this book and also Haunted from within book 2, Which should tell you how good this series is, its the most thought provoking, and unusual book I have ever read, so if you like books that take a subject and look at it from a different view, this is definitely one for you to read, as its a really enjoyable story that you do not want to put down.

45% into the book, and still there is no story. Not to mention the beginning which include descriptions that are pur snuff .

This series is exceptionally good! From beginning to end, I have been hooked. Great characters, a VERY interesting story line and Ian Irvine intrigued me with the medical aspect of this story. I would highly recommend you read this one! I am now reading the Haunted Without series that follows the Haunted Within series and it's just as addictive as the first one was!

This is the fourth book that I read from Mr Irvine. Really love it. I can gladly give this book 5 star ratings. It is really an amazing book. I read the omnibus edition that contain book one and book two.
The characters and the story are outstanding. But if I have to choose which one I like more, I will choose the characters. It doesn't mean the story and science is bad, vice versa it was very great. I just feel more attracted to the characters. The opening is strong. Never thought that I will see the bad guys first. Really take me by surprised. Can't believe that I will love the characterization of Maciek. Someone that you hate but grow into you. The reason why it grow into me because Maciek is not like your typical evil. He is a bad guy but he also "save" Peter. In a sense, he is Peter savior. And killing yourself after doing many bad evil certainly is a plus for me.
Besides Maciek. I also like Peter, Dr. Jamieson, Mr Wallace, Sergant Angus, Big Weeb, and Nic White. They are characters that also grow into you. You may think that it was quite unlikely but I love it. At first you feel sorry for them and then you feel proud of them. The story itself is quite unique. I mean haunted from within really deserved its name. And the epilogue is really sweet. I have soft spot for poetic justice ending type. I cannot stop reading it. Reading this story at midnight certainly make me loss my sleep time. But it worth it. At first I worry that twisted thing will happen, but fortunately that's not the case. So, you don't feel cheated. The story has steady pace.
Anyway, cannot wait to read the sequel Haunted from without as soon as I can. Really recommend this story for people who like to read medical and science thriller

First let me say, I really enjoyed this first book, HAUNTED FROM WITHIN, by Ian C.P. Irvine. I also liked what Prof. Stephen Jamieson said about life in the book. From the beginning of this book to the end, it was amazing. Each chapter unfolded with where and when the story was taking place, and who the story was talking about. Through the skillful plan of the author, the reader is captivated to the last page.
Once I began reading I really didn't know what to think about the way the story took off. It wasn't what I thought it would be about at all. The story was deep. I mean disturbingly deep. It actually might make someone think twice about transplants, even though that transplant might mean the matter of life or death.
To begin with, SP-X 4, the drug, was suppose to help people with transplants to live a normal life. But something is happening with these patients and they can't figure out what it is. Is it something in the drug, like a form of post-transplant cellular memory causing effects, or could it be something else?
One patient in particular, Peter, a reporter, upon receiving new kidneys after a near fatal accident starts having bad dreams. But are they dreams, or are they actually realities making him relive his dreams? Freaky. At first Peter was afraid of heights, but upon receiving his new kidneys he began to want to climb or reach new heights, and was no longer afraid. Why? What could be causing these new sensations? Or could it be a lack of fear? Shouldn't he be afraid? If so, then by what or whom should he be afraid of? Is Peter being warned in some way? A very intriguing story with intriguing characters, especially Peter.

I really enjoyed this story. It was intriguing,scary, fascinating and really kept your attention throughout the book. The author Ian GP Irvine really has a gift with his writing. I say this because book one was very kindly given free, the second one you paid for but the way the author writes you just have to have more so that you can pick up the story and thought provoking ending in book 2 Peter's story This is an incredible read and centers around a serial killer Maciek, a housing estate where the gangs are making life miserable for the community and Peter who tries to help and is seriously injured. The only way he can live is to have an organ transplant. I would highly recommend these books to everyone.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I was going to. It is set mostly in Edinburgh where I have lived for decades now and so obviously recognised several locations in the story. Peter is a journalist who is writing a story for the Edinburgh Evening News about the local gangs in Craigmillar who are making life difficult for the local residents. He is almost driven off the road one night and is seriously injured. He requires a double kidney transplant and after receiving the transplant, the paranormal shenanigans begin. Peter's story [the second book in the series] is ready to be started now

Wow what a story. Was hooked after the first few pages.
What a book. Cannot wait to read the next one. The idea of running two storylines together is hard, but this was done with expert skill. The author has got you by the seat of your pants and Is dragging you along at a fast pace. The main character Is well portrayed and I couldn't put the book down. FABULOUS

Awesome
The book is lovely. Considering it is based on fact is even more strange and scary. Imagine if the evil in this world lived in another human even after they were dead. On the flip side, some of the geniuses and wonderful people living past their bodies gave up would be a boon. All in all, a nice read.

This is one of those 'just one more chapter' books which keep you wondering how everything is going to tie up. I wish I could give it 4 1/2 stars as for me the only thing that lets it down is the curse of the e book, poor proof reading.

Captivating
Excellent book each chapter leaves you wanting more. The author brings the story together in a very intriguing way so that it is not boring and as you begin to realize how the pieces of the puzzle fit you want to know more about it.

Enjoyable read and I did not want to stop but unfortunately in book 2 there isn't a kindle edition available only in paperback :-(. Please put in a kindle edition so I can happily continue reading where I left off.

Excellent premise - could have been a 4
Such a great premise. Needed an editor and should have been one book, but it is an amazing story and reminds us of how far we have medically come. I don't like cliffhangers.

Captivating read
An enjoyable read. While it starts to move towards a slightly predictable end, it has enough variation to keep interest and make for an overall enjoyable read. Another great book by CP Irvin.

I would have rated this book higher except for the fact that it left the reader hanging, picking up in the next book "Haunted From Without". I give this one 4.2 stars.

get ready for a rant.
This book started so well.
Creep serial killer YES!
Seemingly unconnected reporter and doctor YES!
then it all went wrong.
I am not sure why we suddenly switch POV from the very interesting and creepy killer to the boring and now injured reporter and the experimental doctor.
The book immediately lost all momentum and I tried to persist but I was just thrown too much. The book is called Maciek's Story and yet at about 35% we loose sight of Maciek. One could hope that it returns to him but to be honest the shit in the middle with the reporter and the dr was boring and didn't feel relevant, almost like it was written by a different hand.
I would have kept turning pages for Maciek. I wanted his path to cross the reporter and the dr. what we ended up with in the middle was like listening to a kid retell their school day - there might be a coherent thought somewhere but you have to pull it out of all the stops and starts and irrelevant stories about finding leaves and sticks.

I started skipping entire sections and found it made no difference to me: Peter frolicking with his sex partners, their clothing and breasteses, BLEAH!
Peter seems like someone I would never want to know. To me, a really crappy character.
Too much weeping, vomiting, and gnashing of teeth for my taste.
This book seemed to me to never even start. As far as I could see, there was no ticking clock, no encroaching menace, no super-villain, no “Fateful twist,” and nothing to add tension.
For me it just went on and on and on and on and on on and on and on and on and on on and on and on and on and on on and on and on and on and on….
** For me: how to take an interesting topic (which has been around for decades, and which I HAD ALREADY read about) and how to make it boring and dull.
Plus, parts of this seemed to me to come from that Michael Caine movie, HARRY BROWN (2009.)
I do not like these books. I do not like this writing.

Spoiler alert...since I didn't care for this and shared why in the following report, don't read this unless you don't care about some amount of spoiler information. I didn't care for this read at all. The premise is that people receiving organ transplants are returning to good health in amazing short periods of time and then starting to exhibit personality traits of the organ donors. The unfortunate issue here is that the donor may have been someone who had criminal tendencies. The story hopped around a bit and it took me awhile to determine what exactly was going on. If you try it and find that you're not buying into it...give up...you will get no answers in this book. You'd have to buy the second one. I didn't care enough plus, I didn't want to see a character that I kind of liked turn into a ruthless killer.

Snippets from within the life of various characters come together as the story unfolds. What began in the point of view of an unlikable character, changed to add intrigue and give me incentive to discover how each scene would eventually link. Well written, although the tense seemed confused in places, Excellent descriptions gave me a good sense of place in each part of the world when the plot followed various characters.The story line makes an attempt to discover if a body-part contains a soul.
However, the story failed to reach a conclusion, leaving every question unanswered--and me frustrated. I am not keen on this device to prompt the reader into purchasing more books.

Ok so Mr Irwin divides his stories into two, the first book is free and then when you're really booked you pay for the ending in book two. Normally this annoys me a lot but honestly his books are so great i really don't mind! I read another series of his just before this one and had to have more. The book has a great storyline with twist s and turns that keep you reading. There is also the real mystery aspect of this , do people inherit some memories or traits from their donor if they have had a transplant. Interesting stuff. Lov ing it and can t wait to carry on with the arc nture.

Not something to read while you're waiting at the DMV. It was a bit of a snoozer but I was determined to finish it because, it was another forgotten kindle book.
Didn't really hit any of my interest buttons but it was on the verge of it.. just something else, something more intricate in the story ... I don't know.. something would have made it more of a "want to read" instead of "must finish"...

Interesting enough thriller but does a miservice to the female characters that are only there to boost the egos of the male protogonists. They are either murdered or seen as objects of desire or comfort. The changes in Peter's personality seem forced. The idea itself is not a new one, and this is an interesting spin on it.

Truth or. Fiction?
This book was a little slow to start, but as the various plots came together, the story mesmerized. I began to think think of my son, whose organs I donated 2+ years ago. Is his personality split amongst the five people who were given his organs? If this cellular memory is truth, it will be a pharma-medico nightmare of this century.
