Wonderful and so on point - About how to be oneself when one doesn’t know who oneself is and being in-between everything and not knowing between what. About not belonging and maybe selling out to belong. About finding where fits and who to fit with.

This is quite frankly a wonderful little graphic novel. It´s very clearly aimed at girls in their Tweenies, but can probably be appreciated by just about everyone as it deals with universal themes of life and death, love and loss. As I, a 40+ male reader, liked it a lot I think it´s safe to say that its got a universal appeal.

Pssst! is a gentle, memoire-like story of a young girl, presumably living in Denmark as both the scriptwriter and the artist are from there, but it could easily be Sweden or any other country from the Western hemisphere I guess. Viola lives in two different homes, being the child of a divorced couple, and has all the ideas and thoughts that you can have at that age, trying to fit in at the same time as you define your own self and test where your own boundaries go.

The story mixes sequences in the comics form with pure text and various combinations of text and images. Normally I'm a bit wary of such experiments, as they are often done more for show than for the benefit of the story. Texts within comics can also feel too long and cumbersome, slowing down the storytelling unnecessarily much. None of that applies here, though. Author Anette Herzog and artist Kartrine Clante move effortlessly between different ways of communicating, making the changes in how things are shown visually feel essential to the story.

There is a very apparent trend in comics in Sweden right now with stories about young girls, what with Sara Hansson´s Vi håller på med en viktig grej, Hilda-Maria Sandgren´s Det som händer i skogen and Hanna Gustavsson`s Nattbarn and Iggy 4-ever. This is gratifying as there has been a lack of such stories, and Pssst! adds to this trend in that it very much has got it´s own voice and take on the theme.

Pssst! is a book I hope finds many young readers, as it raises a lot of important issues, but is at the same time a good read in itself.

I love hybrid comic chapter books. A part of me wants to place this book with the comics, because it is very picture heavy and I imagine it would find its readers there. Psssst! is basically the scrapbook and journal of a 12 year old girl. She ponders on where she came from, who she is and who she is transforming into. It's pretty great!
