This was a completely engrossing book, from beginning to end. The crazy things people do to each other, yikes. The main character Tonal is immortal, great right? Not for her, her immortality comes with her beast.
This book has it all, the twists and turns. You think you have a handle on thinks, till you don't. When your not reading this book you'll be thinking about it. Then once it ends you'll crave the the next book, need to know what happens next. This is addictive as a drug (I think, I don't use lol). Start it when you have a decent amount of time, cuz you're not going to want to put it down. Enjoy.

Primal Nature is the first book in a paranormal dark fantasy series about an immortal shapeshifter in a war torn future version of the Americas, which was published in 2017. I bought it cheap a few years ago during a promotion, (probably Bookbub) and it’s sat on my ever-increasing TBR ever since (I’ve got 153 books on my “bought ebooks to read” list which dates back to 2016). A couple of nights ago, when I really wasn’t feeling my latest ARC, I decided for once I wanted the freedom to read something just for me, rather than because I’m due a review or need books for the Book Club bag, and what I felt like was urban fantasy. Unfortunately this wasn’t as good as I’d hoped, which is always a risk with the first book from a new-to-me author, but I did like the main character and am probably interested enough to find out what happens next.
A few hundred years from now, a young woman is held in a secret facility and repeatedly tortured by evil scientists and the military to try and extract the secret of her rapid healing, super strength and apparent immortality. She herself doesn’t know how it came about, but when finally pushed to breaking point she undergoes a violent transformation and is able to escape alongside a grizzled South American political prisoner. On the run, they travel to his home deep in the Colombian Amazon, where she can explore her new powers in safety, but with a civil war raging between the corrupt government and the pro-democracy rebels, she has no choice but to join the fight.
I started having qualms about this book when scene after scene of brutal torture is described - including a casual reference to rape - for the first 15% before our heroine finally escapes. This felt excessive even if it was to justify what she does to her captors. Things seemed like they were going to get interesting, but the action sequences were disappointingly short compared to Tonal & Julio’s rather drawn out journey and the exposition of the political situation in his country. In the second half, she seems like she’s going to use her unique powers for good, but instead puts herself in an extremely unpleasant situation where she experiences (spoiler alert) completely unnecessary repeated sexual abuse and degradation described in frankly horrifyingly gratuitous detail in order to fulfil a mission - which she should’ve been able to achieve with one swipe of a claw. I almost gave up there but I wanted to see the bad guy suffer and know how things turned out. Rape is used as a weapon and to show how evil the baddies are throughout the book, and the women who survive it (and many don’t) are shown to just shrug it off as a fact of life, which I found both unrealistic and very distasteful.
The world-building here was very thin: considering it’s set at least two hundred years into the future, there is no new technology and apart from some brief mentions of energy wars and the resulting geopolitical changes, everything sounded very “now”. We also never get any explanation of why or how Tonal is so special - maybe that comes in later books. Plenty of other questions are also left unanswered - like what happened to the guy she bit, and why did the US military give up searching for her when they must’ve known what she was?
There are lots of spelling and English language mistakes (and this is after careful editing, apparently!) There are frequent perspective changes - with some short chapters in Tonal’s first person voice) which is fine but unnecessary, but more annoyingly viewpoint shifts within paragraphs, which were confusing to say the least. Singleton is better at storytelling than writing - hopefully this will improve with experience and better editing.
I prefer my urban fantasy to not include romance, and was happy to be reading about a strong independent and deadly woman, so was disappointed when a love interest is introduced, and while it was essential for the plot, we didn’t need all the sex scenes. Conversely I did like the friendships that were developed here. I wasn’t sure if I would want to continue this series, but the first few chapters of the next book are included at the end and it seems the story is going in a completely different direction so I’ll check out some reviews and as long as the nasty sex stuff is toned down probably will buy the next one (once I’ve shrunk the above-mentioned list a bit!)

In the near future oil has run out and developed countries are invading poor countries to steal their alternate fuel power. A rich vs poor fight on planetary scale.
MC is immortal and doesn't age, which means farmaceutical companies keep torturing her so she gives them the secret.
I read the book and story wasn't bad, but it suffers from some (IMO) failures. For example, some parts in the book are very illogical:

- Story
- I read it whole, even the parts that read like they are copied from a romance novel, so I guess that's good
Bad:
- Whole book reads the same: there are no slow or fast parts, it all feels like a bland diary.
- Sometimes POV switches in the middle of a paragraph, and it takes 2-3 reads to figure out what is going on
- There are things in the book that made me say "Why?!?"
- Some confusing words, as if the english wasn't author's primary language (ie. dessert is not an area with low precipitation filled primarily with sand)

I just could not believe that anyone can write such a magnificently strong first book! This urban fantasy read is so riveting that i had to read it from cover to cover in one sitting and then when i finally switched off the light to sleep i was so pumped up with adrenaline that i stayed awake till this morning! The read is full of great love, passion, loyalty and idealism but this side by side with so much cruelty, greed, betrayal and the usual corrupter the fight for power! It is such a scary book as i found that it although it is situated in a different time frame to ours the obscene things happening were true to our time too such as the militarisation of many countries, the use of chemical warfare and the spread of deadly viruses concocted by the pharmaceutical companies and last but not least the genetic engineering of humans, food and produce. The plot is very original, set in South America with very strong main Characters, dealing with dictators, partisan revolutionaries, mercenaries and the evil military! Tonal the woman who turns into the strongest of predators is fighting on two fronts to stop the evil reigning in the South American countries and topple the evil dictators but also so retain her humanity over the strength of her bestial nature! This book just needs to be read especially now that the second book is up for pre-order and should be launched soon and i cannot wait to read this!! so go out and get these great reads.

This was a very engrossing dark Fantasy book. The crazy things people do to each other, yikes. This book has it all, the twists and turns. The shapeshifter. (although she is the only one between humans in this book). You think you have a handle on things, till you don't. Although the endless torture in the facilities does get a little boring because of the repeating 'few weeks' later. And 'then it all started over again'. The story wasn't really making any progress in that stage of the book. I can completely understand that in those long chapters there will be some readers that will browse though it al till their eyes hit some new development in the story-line.
Then she escapes. Sounds more fun. Now I had the idea 'now the books wil get rolling'. But No. The revolution in Columbian Amazon is also one of the long end of the book and for me not really a fun story line. Some skips with '20 year later' parts and thought the book the point of view changes from the main character to the author who is telling us the story and not letting us experience it. The main negative where the frequent spelling mistakes cause the reader to trip up, breaking whatever rhythm there was.
So in short. The idea of the books sounds fun. But you will have to overcome a lot to really enjoy this book with its flaws, raw writing style and lack of suspense. I think a good editor and some amazing Beta-readers could really make this a 5 star book!

Next book please
Woah. Just woah! I don't know what I was expecting when I found this wonderful book. I'm pretty sure other people are leaving spoilers and I'm really trying not to but I can't resist. That shifter plot just jumped at you. Made you think how in the hell?! I'll stop there.
So now to my questions that I hope will be answered in book two. Were Tonal's abilities genetic? Or did the great powers that be bestow her with gifts because they knew they would be needed? Will she ever remember her name? Lol probably doesn't matter. That one soldier she bit at the beginning does he eventually turn into a shifter? Will she continue to roam alone? As a side note: Dang the general's family tree can sure hold grudges! I don't like bullies and they have made it their mission to do just that... for generations. #LifetimeGoals

Wow living forever isn’t as great as it sounds. Experiment after experiment didn’t work out as it should have. Kept me intrigued until the very end to find out what happened. Ready for more by this talented author.

I have been waiting to get my hands on this book for weeks, and when I finally did, I was blown away. This was one of the best books I have ever had a privilege to read. The writing is superb, the characters are developed to the point of being real, the world is developed to the smallest detail, and the plot is one of the most original and realistic imaginable. It is futuristic without being more technologically advanced, it is almost dystopian in its despair, but no unusual apocalyptic event has occurred. The author offers a glimpse into future of 200 years of power struggle between rich, struggle of poor for survival, and global fight for resources.
As mentioned above, this is a very scary, very violent story. However, the author does not throw around violence for the shock factor but uses it to give better and more accurate depiction of the state of society, human greed, evil lurking inside privileged individuals and despair of poverty among masses.
As the world drowns in corruption and greed, rich have all the power to do as they please. Human life is worthless, as poor humans are being sold and used as servants, girls and young women as sex slaves and able male children forced into military. One curious case of a woman, who does not age, attracts the attention of pharmaceutical company and causes her to be trapped in a laboratory, tested and tortured for years. The resistance of poor and desperate people does not fare any better, as their paths cross in the holding cells and torture labs.
In the midst of despair, a ray of hope shines through, as the Subject 336 awakens. With every cut and bruise she becomes stronger and more powerful, until the torture crosses the line and awakens the creature more dangerous than anyone could have imagined.
It was amazing to follow the evolution of the beast as well as the woman, with all the accompanying emotions, as they become one. Despite her fears at the loss of her humanity, Tonal's compassion and kindness are immeasurable. Her strength is immense, and her dedication to helping people legendary. This story takes us through Tonal's participation in resistance and fight for people who need her help most. It is an incredible story of survival, perseverance and persistence. I immediately went for the next book.
There are three books in the series and the prequel: Warmonger, Primal Nature, Nature of the Beast, and The Beast Inside.

Primal Nature has a great plot, which is probably the only reason I finished it. The actual writing wasn't very good with grammatical and spelling errors on almost every page, and that's not an exaggeration. Literally every page! It seemed like the writer was getting tired of writing the book as I got closer and closer to the end with characters actions not making any sense. I just can't buy a character's personality changing from an honorable and selfless man to a selfish, cruel dictator in a short period of time the way one of these characters did. This writer has the imagination to create some good stories but her writing skills need a lot of work.

This book was fast paced with a strong female lead. I only had one grip it seemed to take forever to kill one bad guy. Our lead character is strong so I couldn't figure out why she allowed herself to be abused so long. I was actually at one point yelling "just snap his neck already" I just did not get the point unless the author was trying to give her a more serious head screw than she already has. I will buy the next book just to see where this story goes.

Spell Check
I loved the story but I do not think I have ever read a book(and I have read 1,000s) with so many spelling mistakes, nearly every page contained at least one, it's a shame as it's breaks into the story as you read ruining the flow.

First of a fascinating series. . .
Primal Nature is the first of two unique novels by Monique Singleton. I have read them out of order as book 2 was a gift from Ms Singleton; and having read it immediately knew I would have to get Primal Nature and read bit as well. (I believe a third in the series is due out in January) can hardly wait to continue the adventures of a woman with strange and disturbing powers. Disturbing to her as well, as she does not know where they have come from or why she has them. She is a shifter; but this is not a typical "shifter" book. She seemingly is the only one of her kind. She also is immortal and impervious to any and all wounds. She has a blood lust only satisfied by killing humans; but her moral code contrasts with the urges of her cat-like other nature. To solve her dilemma and to avoid insanity from her competing natures, she determines to kill only humans who are socio or psychopaths who commit horrible crimes against other humans and to avoid playing God and makes the determination to become a hired asassin; but only for just causes. Her adventures are detailed in these two books. Ms Singletons characters are varied and strong and remain in character. Somehow as outside of the norm this all sounds, it remains believable when considered in the light of the fact that it all takes place in the future and is after all, a story, a good story well told. I recommend both books highly.

This is a long book and emotionally exhausting to read. I have to say that it is absolutely brilliant but not for the feint hearted. I found it harrowing and unrelentingly sad. I grieved along with the characters and lived with them and even felt like I was part of them as they relentlessly tried to battle their way through their thankless lives. But Tonal what can I say about her without spoilers? What can I say about Alex? Maybe silence is for the best. I am sitting here looking at the screen of my laptop and I really am struck dumb at my reaction to this incredible book. I am hurting, it was painful to read however the author has the ability to bring deep feelings to life with her words. I read her words and I feel the emotions deep within me. I "feel" Tonal, it is awful and wonderful at the same time. I do not know any other way to explain it. The only way to understand what I am saying is to read the book for yourself. Let it speak to you.

I’m not sure it’s a spoiler; but be warned before reading on, ill touch the setting of the story..
Initially it was a nice read. I consider myself not Squamish at all. However when a story manages to skim over a big event like the murder of a high person in about a page, but dwells on the detailes of cruelty of that said persons for pages on a time, even like chapters? Nah. To me it seemed the story was just an excuse to keep on going on about rape and abusing woman both mentally and physically. I kept reading, hoping the story would flesh out to less gore and more depth.
Alas, to me: it didn’t.
To done this might be right up their alley: blood, gore and abuse.. for me, it just isn’t it. I won’t be reading the sequels, and in all my years of reading.. that is a first..

I gave it a shot
This needs an editor something fierce.
It's an interesting premise that quickly got boring.
I struggled with a lot.
I was not fond of the writing style. I didn't enjoy how it kept changing perspective. It made it extremely difficult for me to stay engaged in the story.
There was no emotion behind it either, which made the brutal nature of the read fall entirely flat.
There were so many errors. The first page used you're when it should've been your. Disseminated instead of decimated. There were so many missing words. A lot of sentences didn't make sense.
The political aspect of the read was so high level and was not convincing at all.
While Tonal was living in the jungle, I completely lost interest altogether.
This needs an editor something fierce.

There were so many errors. The first page used you're when it should've been your. Disseminated instead of decimated. There were so many missing words. A lot of sentences didn't make sense.
The political aspect of the read was so high level and was not convincing at all.
While Tonal was living in the jungle, I completely lost interest altogether.

…just needs to be written—no one knows why. Faced with death as everybody’s natural end what would a long life with the current state of human nature be like? How would a caring person—one with a heart—handle the inextricable need to solve oppressive people who refuse to honor the life or sanctity of others deal with such godlike decisions?
The author doesn’t attempt to answer these questions but postulates a scenario which at least delves into reality a degree or three…

Interesting read
I enjoyed this book, however I am curious as to where the series will go. The book is intense and you get pulled right into it. I had a hard time sometimes with the story point of view jumping back and forth so often. But I enjoyed the plot of the story. This book alone doesn’t necessarily have a happy ending if that’s what you’re looking for but it was very well done.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I came across this book on Kindle Unlimited. I thought the story line was great - not that the book was always enjoyable to read as it is a little dark. There is a woman who is immortal with the ability to turn into a large cat that becomes involved with a revolutionary. Resources are running out, the rich have taken over and the poor are rebelling. The world is unstable which doesn't seem all that far-fetched these days. Worth reading!

I didn't know what to expect, but this surely passed any and all expectations. I would say I've never read a story like this, but I reveled in the Highlander-esque imagery and detail.
This book was a rollercoaster of emotions. If one can think of an emotion, any emotion, it's in this book. It's is so well-written and the characters are so developed. I would honestly give it more than five stars if I could. It was so amazing that I'm still shaking my head.

Beautiful story but...
Its hard, it's gritty and dark, primal nature show us the obscure part of humanity from someone who is not part of it anymore. Well, it felt episodic to me. As is someone told me the story instead of me living it. It was weird, and I don't think I will buy the second book. But I recommend it to people who likes that kind of story.

Fantastic series
Monique Singleton’s writing is compelling, and her characters are enthralling. Tonal’s journey if full of mystery, surprise, gut-renching trauma and the occasional bouts of joy and hope.
The lengths she needs to go to, to assist the resistance is mind boggling.

The storyline had great potential to be extremely captivating. However, I felt the writing itself left a lot to be desired. There was a lack of intrigue to the writing, sequence of events were simply brushed past with blunt statements. There were no moments of suspense, nothing to create any sort of connection to the characters.

I was engrossed right from the beginning.
The main character is an amazing creature fighting to come to grips with her human and animal natures.
Let it be said that there is a lot of violence, sexual situations, and gore in these books.
I have the next four of the series on my TBR shelf already.

I really enjoyed this book. The character building and the nature of evil are deeply examined. That past wars were as bloody as some of the books action scenes sends a shiver down my spine. Tonal helped out as she could and made some very dear friends.

Wonderfully original
Dark, this story is extremely dark. The violence is hard to suffer through.
Despite this, I was wrapped deeply into the tale of an unexpected immortal discovering her own nature.

An Intriguing Story
An interesting concept of how some people see you if you are different from them. I really liked the caricature that was different her name is Tona. I don't believe you have you know someone like her

This is well written and interesting book. The characters are engaging and well developed with a strong connection throughout the pages.

great book
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that she never stops writing. Her books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
