Informative, well illustrated book provides variety of information for travelling individually.
Hopefully, not much changed in situ since it was published.

Used this book heavily when I went to Oman for the first time. Definitely will come back, definitely will use the book again.

I think, however, that the "Off-Road" part in the title is rather misleading as I was expecting the book to enable me to do what I do here in Qatar. Instead, we ended up spending 85% of the time on tarmac road and 12% on clear tracks/ very well used paths.... not much of a 4X4 rough adventure there.

Apart from that, the book's also advertising heavily on the Trekking guide.

What irritated me was that the GPS points given are of the junctions on the main road, not for the really difficult to find points. We didn't manage to find some of the places we want to visit because of this. We could have, if we could just drive off across the desert to a given GPS point.

Also, for some reason, despite its obvious huge popularity (at least it is in my circle of friends) I could not find the newer edition of the book in any bookshops in this region. The country's roads and tracks changed quite a bit after the cyclone in early summer of 2007. This wasn't such a problem for us as we just needed to do a bit of a detour or take a newer road (hats off to the Omani government for speed and thoughtfulness in getting the country back on business after the catastrophe!).

Still, its got some pretty good satellite pictures as maps, nice descriptions and tips albeit incomplete, also in an easy to use format. Definitely would be very interested to get my hands on the next editions, also if they do a similar one for the other countries' (apart from the UAE one that they have that I don't need).

I bought this for my recent camping / off-road trip to Oman back in December and we would've been lost without it, detailed off-road route descriptions, well graded with desert, wadis, mountains to difficulty levels, maps, GPS co-ord's and not forgetting fantastic camping spots away from potential crowds.

oh and if you're planning on going dune bashing, they have a great section in the back on 'how' not to get stuck. which we only discovered after the desert....Thank god for Amar the bedouin guide we bumped into otherwise we might have been in a pickle! (i have his mobile if anyone needs it!)

We are planning a trip to Oman and this is the book to have if you have a 4X4 and want to explore the less beaten tracks.
Great maps!
