David Thorne is an Australian humourist, satirist, Internet personality and New York Times best-selling author. His work has been featured on the BBC, The Late Show with David Letterman, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Thorne gained public recognition in late 2008 for an email exchange in which he attempts to pay an overdue bill with a drawing of a seven-legged spider. The exchange spread virally via email and social networking sites, leading to a surge of visitors to his website 27b/6 (27bslash6). 27b/6 features a collection of humorous emails and articles from Thorne's life. These and additional essays appear in Thorne's book, The Internet is a Playground. Published by Penguin Group and released on 28 April 2011, the book debuted at number four on The New York Times Best Seller list.
A collection of David Thorns best bits, it made me laugh out loud several times, I guess his humour speaks to me. I feel that design work must be a little like building software people often want something for nothing.
The only reason I gave this three stars, rather than five, is because contrary to the advertising and hype, it does not contain any new material. For me, (an owner of 3/5 books), there was only about an hour or hour and a half of new reading material in it. If you are first reading Thorne, this is a great place to start and see if you will enjoy it. I love all the books and do plan on continuing to purchase future novels.
This is a very funny book, but I felt a bit conflicted reading it. Either the author tells a great yarn, or else these stories are true (which they are purported to be). In that case, the author is actually a bit of a jerk, with way too much time on his hands who deliberately winds people up. He's a funny jerk, but a jerk.
My favourite bit was the official office complaints from Simon...which could have come straight out of "The Office"! (Think Tim/Gareth or Jim/Dwight)
Knyga, kurioje rasite keisčiausių email susirašinėjimų rinkinį ir, jei esate eilinis ofiso gyventojas, tikrai rasite kažką, su kuo būsite susidūrę patys. Labai jau paikas skaitinys, kuris man kažkuo priminė keistą Užkalnio rašinių ir Penktadienio Internetų (rip) miksą. Vietomis pakankamai juokingas, tačiau tie juokai ties viduriu knygos greitai paseno. Prie kavos ar tuoleto pertraukėlių po vieną ar du skyrelius tinkamas, bet niekam daugiau.
The charm for this one wore thin for me. It's difficult to make, "I pretend to be oblivious to irritate the people around me" funny for very long. That said, when this book is funny, it's hilarious, and the highlights for me were surprisingly touching anecdotes about his family I enjoyed very much.
Brilliant writing, super funny - and super annoying at times if I imagine being at the receiving end of some of these! Sassy, witty and extremely well written! A great read. A huge mood lifter! Highly recommend owning one of these for all those days you need a little fun vitamin boost!
I can’t understand the need for this book. Most of the content in this book are found in his previous books and this is just like a recap of the other books. Was highly disappointed to see the exact same essays and mails published in this book. Can’t understand why he would do that. That is crazy.
I share a humour similar to David Thorne and love all his books. Some of his stuff is a bit more out there than his usual but overall, his books always have me laughing out loud.
