A psychotic ginger vampire. A demonic rooster horse. The Brothers Grimm have broken free from their prison, and are thirsty for blood. This wizard learns that buying books can be deadly, and that his childhood Fairy Tales were not just stories, but dire warnings…
Let's cut to the chase. You read stuff. I write stuff. So, If you want to nab a few of my free Amazon Best Selling Urban Fantasy books to test the waters, go here: http://www.shaynesilvers.com
Now, let's talk about this specimen of a man named Shayne...
Shayne Silvers writes the "Nate Temple Series" which features a foul-mouthed, flawed, young wizard with a chip on his shoulder attempting to protect St. Louis from the various nasties we all know and fear from our childhood bedtime stories.
Nate's been known to suckerpunch an Angel, cow-tip the Minotaur, and steal Death's horse in order to prove his point. His utter disregard for consequences and self-preservation will have you laughing and cringing on the edge of your seat.
But he has a lot to learn. Namely, how not to be so big of an A-Hole.
Shayne holds two high-ranking black belts, and enjoys conversing about anything Marvel, Magical, or Mythological. You might find him writing in a coffee shop near you, cackling madly into his computer screen while pounding shots of espresso.
Fairy Tale is the prequel to the Temple Chronicles by Shayne Silvers, and is the first piece I’ve read from the series or the author. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The snark level here is exactly what I’m looking for when I choose to read urban fantasy. When I start gravitating toward UF, my life is generally becoming hectic in some sense. I go to UF because I know that I will almost always deliver fast-pasted, well plotted stories with a dynamic cast of characters and, in the best case scenario, a plucky protagonist who wields sarcasm as a weapon whom I can look forward to revisiting again and again as UF series tend to be long in installments instead of hefty books.
Nate Temple is an incredibly fun protagonist, one I believe to be on par with Harry Dresden and Atticus O’Sullivan from the Iron Druid Chronicles. He has a very strong voice, and I really love it. He’s sassy and intelligent and a believable mix of lazy and driven. I love his relationship with Gunnar, his lycanthropic best friend, and their banter is a pleasure to read. I also really enjoyed Nate’s inner monologue, which demonstrated his ability to find humor in even the most terrifying situations. My favorite example of this is below, and actually made me laugh out loud.
“If Wes Craven and Stephen King’s most horrific, most terrifying, personal nightmares met at a bar for a few drinks, ended up boinking at a cheap hotel, and producing a fledgling monster baby together, this figure would have terrified it.”
There are a couple of interesting differences I’d like to note between this book and series like the Dresden Files and the Iron Druid Chronicles. First, Nate actually has a family among the living, one he has a pretty decent relationship with. From the UF series I’ve read, this is fairly uncommon. Protagonists often build motley families of their own, but they seldom have living biological family with whom they have a healthy relationship. The fact that Nate has both parents, who are still married and seem to love each other, is something I haven’t seen in any other UF series I’ve read. Also, Nate is from a famous family, and is often recognized by people in public, whether these people are magically inclined or not, which I think is also unusual for protagonists in this genre.
The best thing about this little novella? It’s free! If you visit the author’s website and sign up for his newsletter, he will send you Fairy Tale as a free ebook. If you enjoy it, Silvers has written over twenty other books in the same universe, with twelve of those being told from Nate’s perspective. That’s an insane amount of published works since 2012! If you happen to have Kindle Unlimited, every single one of these is available to borrow from there, as well as being available for purchase for reasonable prices. I don’t usually this much of my review on where and how to get an author’s books, but if this prequel is any indicator, the Temple Chronicles are going to be a fun, addictive read that are also a great deal. Silvers is prolific and appears to be self-published (correct me if you see that I’m wrong!), so I wanted to include a little extra information here in support of his efforts.
If you love urban fantasy but have never picked this series up, I definitely think it’s worth your time to grab this novella and give Nate a chance. After all, what do you have to lose? It’s free!
This fairy tale with a twist introduces Nate Temple, scion of a multi-million dollar industrial tycoon and a witch with an independent streak that's seen him live as a rich playboy, rather than follow in his father's footsteps. On a hunch Nate, also a wizard, decides to buy at auction an original copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales, put up for sale by a family friend of his father's The problems really start when Nate's successful in his bid and goes to collect his prized new possession...
What does Nate suspect about the book, from rumors he's heard? Who put it into the auction - and why? Who is Gunnar and what is so special about him? How does he help Nate in his hunt for the book? Who has stolen the book and where do Nate and Gunnar go to find him? Why does Nate summon a Sprite and what unexpected result does he get from it?
As threat follows hope and terror stalks the darkness Nate and Gunnar will need all the help they can get, in this novella I can highly recommend to fans of fairy tales without the 'Disney-effect', handsome protagonists and fantasy thrillers - in other words this means you!
A nice introduction to Nate Temple, a wizard trying to recover a stolen magical book with the help of his friend Gunner, a werewolf FBI agent. I liked Shayne Silvers writing style. It's fun and easy to follow and hooks you in. I'm looking forward to reading the first book of The Temple Chronicles.
It's difficult to NOT make the comparison of Shayne Silvers' Nathan Laurent Temple and other wizards. Wizard whose parents were killed when he was young - Harry James Potter, check! Wizard working as a consultant in an urban environment - Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, check! Rich playboy who fights the underworld - Bruce Thomas Wayne, check! (Ok, Batman is not a wizard but you get my drift, and Bruce's parents were killed when he was young, too, so double check?)
I am a HUGE fan of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series. But Jim's not releasing books as quickly as he did, and so a friend recommended Silvers' Nate Temple book sto fill the time between Dresden releases, so I got the boxed set. Notice: "Fairy Tale" is a PREQUEL, so if you get the set, even though it is not boxed first, READ it first.
I have to say, at first it was hard to set aside the all the references, homage, whatever to other series - but it's like comparing DC Comics to Marvel Comics - same premise, but different universe. Once I took that approach it worked for me. Quite well. And in fact, the embellishment and almost petulant antics are at times similar to comic books! (Graphic Novels, please, Shayne!) This is it to be read for the pure fun and enjoyment of it.
Nate can be a bit of a rascal at times, and make no mistake, this is no YA novel - it's full of adult language and situations, but even when Nate becomes a bit TOO over the top, he has friends and compatriots to set him straight. Including a Werewolf who is written so wonderfully, I wish I could meet him! (There are LOTS of fantasy and fairy tale characters, yes, including a very horny fairy.)
There are plenty of thrills, tragedy, action, combat and loving friendships. I recommend this to book to lovers of fantasy fiction! Come on, give a chance!
A bit slow in the beginning of this tale but it did pick up and got much better.. I loved the lol moments and the relatable characters... I'm assuming with all this set up about some books that they will become pretty damn important to this entire series... I truly hope this series get better and better as I read from one book to the next.... So here's goes nothing.. Off to book one!
Sic 'Em Nate & Gunner, Sink Your teeth In Deep, Once These Brother's Grimm Are Free, They'll Be Hunting After Thee!
Wow! What a fabulous rollercoaster ride of fun, fast-paced action (well except the moped chase) and a great way to start off a fresh fantasy series with great characters and a variety of Supernatural Critters and Creatures! With frightening blurs of phantasams that move too quick for the super eyes & nose of a young master wizard in Nate Temple & his sidekick companion / Best mate, Werewolf / FBI Agent in Gunner Randulf. These two tear up the town of St Louis and cause a riot in the process, all innocent of course!
With power packed Major Scary Magical Tomes & Grimoire disappearing and dead bodies piling up, including several FBI Agents & a wizard, it looks like more than just the right side of law's justice maybe required here or else these Supernatural bad guys will just disappear and justice won't be served. Can super straight FBI Agent of protocol Gunner Randulf go against everything his training & nature has taught him in towing the deep blue line?
If your a lover of books, you know books have power, as do words, but some books have real powers, powers that could unleash Hell and regin it upon The Templeverse, Freaks & Regulars alike, especially if the Brother's Grimm are released from their literal prison within the pages of this not so innocent book of childhood bedtime rhymes!
Back in the Brother's day, they were not only the Supernatural Police Force, but Judge, Dury and Executioner too, protecting the world from all that goes bump in the night. But not all Freaks are bad and the Grimm's didn't discriminate, to them 'The only good Freak was a Dead Freak' & soon became the Monsters they loathed themselves, bringing the Supernatural community together & trapping the Brothers, locked in a prison of sorts, within the pages of their own book, 'Fairy Tale'! What is believed to be a simple accounting of their dastardly deeds!
Fast forward several centuries and things have changed. The Wizards are now the official Police Force of the Magical & Supernatural world, but the quite & peace is about to be shattered as Nate bids & wins the famous book.
But not all goes according to plan, Nate finds his book missing and a pile of bodies growing larger by the second, with a young psychotic Ranga with the powers of a Master Vampire leading the charge to bring the Brothers Grimm back to the world!
Its a riot a minute with magic, mystery, mayhem, madness, murder & supernatural monsters that'll keep you hooting with hilarious laughing out loud moments & bulls up to keep you smiling through the entire novella.
The only bad thing about the book is it's way too short, but there's plenty more where that came from as this author has 30+ books under his belt & sure looks like it's about to be a fantastic adventure from start to finish and a fabulous series and I just dove in head first!
I RATE FAIRY TALE 4.6⭐ OUT OF 5 ⭐, This is the best damn fantasy Series I've read in years by a Male American Authour, Who just became my favourite and I bought half the Series B4 even reading a single page, just a few back page synopsis!
And I Definitely Recommend This Read Actually I Say Buy The Whole Series Its In Kindle Unlimited Too.
I bought a Copy of this book from Amazon and this is my fair, honest and impartial review as always.

Weird, I'm sure I rated this book a while ago, but it was not on my 'read' list.
3.5
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot)
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see *s differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-) ------------
This novella is a prequel to the Nate Temple supernatural thriller series, and though I read it after the first book (Obsidian Son) it's a great introduction to the world of Nate and how he got started as an arcane book dealer. Following Nate and his friend Gunner as they try to recover a magical book and stop some murderers with magical abilities, it's a brilliant quick read and very well written. Full of action, adventure, fighting and friendship, I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to all supernatural lovers, especially anyone who's just found the Nate Temple books. If you've not started the series yet, read this book first, but if you have started the series, you can still read and enjoy this book too. And with its short length, you don't need to feel guilty about needing to read it from beginning to end without stopping either! NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions
Nate Temple is a rich, Tony Stark-like Douche...ish new adult. While drunk at an auction, he starts a bid at 250k for an old Brother's Grimm book in order to avoid hooking up with a "cougar." After driving up the bid, he wins the old collection of Fairy Tales, which he expects to hold a little magic. When he goes backstage to acquire his expensive literature, all hell breaks a loose. A Flash-like creature that could move through shadows murders a security guard AND the cougar. Not only that, the paranormal being steals the book!
Now, intoxicated and irritated, Nate must chase down the mysterious creature, find the dangerous book, and try to not to get killed doing it.
This story is a prequel to the Nate Temple series, and only available by joining Shayne Silvers's newsletter--and it's worth it! I was skeptical going in, being a big fan of the Dresden Files and the Sandman Slim series. However, Nate's personality and the snarky voice of the author bring an authenticity and uniqueness to the Temple-verse. I'm excited to jump into the full series.
I liked the writing style of this story. It was casual, natural, and funny. Nate Temple as a character was also quite humorous (albeit rather immature sometimes). The plot and setting were interesting; I like the concept and the world that it's set in. There were a couple times I got confused during the action scenes. And I think it could have done with one or more female characters who aren't sexualized.
All in all, I enjoyed the novella and would consider reading more of this series.
Totally loved this Novella in the Nate Temple Series! It gives some insight in to Nate before his parents deaths and how he came to own Plato's Cave. It also delves into the Grimm, which is the next book in the series. If you love a healthy dose of sarcasm and paranormal creatures of all sort, you will love this series! Thank you Mr. Silvers for creating such a wonderfully sarcastic hero that doesn't mind getting his ass kicked for humanities sake, or for minotaur tipping!
An excellent introduction to the magical world Shayne Silvers created. You meet the main characters and their enemies for the first time. Shayne does an excellent job hooking you. It's up to the next book of the series to wheel you in. This is one of the shortest books I read in a while. But, since I got the book for free when I signed up for his newsletter, I don't mind that. It is a good teaser for what's to come.
Fairy tale was part of the box set I borrowed from Amazon through the kindle. This was an introduction to the brothers grimm and sprite (or barbie as became known). This was quite an action packed story and I'm enjoying read what this author has written.
Nate comes across as a bit of a playboy but with hidden depths and he has a number of interesting friends.
If your into supernatural fiction then this is something that may appeal.
After reading the Feathers and Fire series I plan on reading this series. I had already been introduced to Nate in that series and new that I was going to like him. This book introduces the reader to Nate and his craziness. It also introduces his best friend that he is trying to corrupt. I love how Nate is introduced to some really bad magic like the horse rooster cross. This book has some grate humor just like the other series.
I was stunned by the level of action, magic and humor packed in Shayne Silvers 'Fairy Tale'. An extremely powerful wizard, nemesis of legend, and an FBI werewolf best friend combined make this series too good to pass up. Reviews of this book say all manner of wonderful things and I agree. This is one you can't miss. Put it in the "awesome" section of your library.
Read this book after #1 and #2 but before #3. Another amazing story. You can't help but see Nate's good natured reasons to be a crazy justice seeking wizard. This is a good origin story for Nate and the things we see in book #1 and @2. Also, it is eerily setting up the third installment (Grimm). Looks like I have more reading to do. Loving the series so far!
the story here just didn't do it for me here. Likely because i didn't get around to reading this until i was most of the way through the rest of the Nate Temple stories and by the time you have hit book 7-9 you are used to Nate being a bit more grown up.
What i did get out of it was a desire to see some stories of Nate's parents adventures.
Excellent story! Meet Nate Temple and his side kick Gunnar. Nate is a wizard and Gunner is a werewolf but is an FBI agent. Together they are a humorous and interesting team. Yes, they are trying to get back a book and solve a murder but they seem to have some fun while doing it. I throughly enjoyed this book And highly recommend it!
I think I kinda love Nate Temple. He has a good heart but is sassy and willing to do the hard things to make a situation right. This tale is not quite an origin story of Nate Temple. It is more of an explanation to some of the players and and locations.
I would definitely read it if you like Nate and company!
If you like Wizards and a Werewolf FBI agent, that are trying to keep the world safe you need to read the Nate Temple Series. It is on my MUST READ LIST.
I received an advance copy, at no cost, in exchange for an honest review and have no personal affiliation with the author.
I decided to read Fairy Tale first. Goddamnit, it's 3am and I've kinda fallen in love. There were a few scenes in this delightful novella that had me outright giggling. I'm really rather glad I decided to jump into Nate Temples world. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series ☺️
I enjoyed the book very much. This book kept me interested from the start. It set up the background for the story well and still kept the action moving. I do not usually write reviews but I would like to help the author. I have already started the next book. Obsidian Son.
This was my entry into the Templeverse. It was engaging, fast paced and fun. Loved the characters. They seem so real that I see them in my head as I read. A must read for anyone with good taste 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I loved it! I'm a huge Urban Fantasy fan but I don't usually read novels from a dude's perspective. This series is consistently recommended on "lists" and I couldn't pass it up when I saw it offered for free on the author's website. I'm so glad I finally started it and that there's many more!
Enjoyed this introduction to the Templeverse a lot. Must say that it reminded me a *lot* of the Dresden files, but I'm sure that the actual series will develop upon this and either way, it's a good set of books to be similar to.
If I had read this first I would never have bothered with the others. The weakest by far of those I've read and the lead character has little to commend him to the reader unless the like to read about 12 year old boys.
I was laughing almost through this whole book. It's so full of humor, it is brilliantly written, and I love that the Brothers Grimm are the villains!! I just found a new series to read!!
