Miriell, a powerful empathic priestess, has been kidnapped from her own primitive planet along with a number of her people, and sold to the evil Amarotu Combine, largest organized crime syndicate in the Sectors. When she and her handler are sent to use her power to commit an assassination, she must leave behind her own sister as hostage to ensure her compliance. Miriell cannot ask for aid without endangering herself and others.
Despite his best efforts, Combine enforcer Conor Stewart is entranced by Miriell, and helps her evade the worst of brutal treatment from the rest of the mob. But Conor must keep his distance, before the lovely empath learns that he has secrets of his own–secrets that could get them both killed.
The situation becomes dire when Conor and Miriell come to the attention of both the Combine overlords and the deadly Mawreg, aliens who threaten the Sectors. Can she save herself and the Mawreg’s next victims? And will Conor help her, or remain loyal to his evil bosses?
USA Today Best Selling Science Fiction & Paranormal Romance author.
Veronica Scott grew up in a house with a library as its heart. Dad loved science fiction, Mom loved ancient history and Veronica thought there needed to be more romance in everything. When she ran out of books to read, she started writing her own stories.

Another book in Veronica Scott's The Sectors SF Romance Series. Miriell's planet was attacked and she and many of her people are captured. She is sold to an organized crime syndicate who want to use her powers. Conner Stewart is a Combine Enforcer and finds himself attracted to the strange green woman. But he can't let anything interfere with his job.
Another enjoyable addition to the series. This one has an epilogue that brings some closure to the story. Good series and highly recommended to Sci-Fi Romance fans.
One of the golden elements of this series is the versatility of settings and situations the characters face in far future space. In this case, there is a tension-wrought mafia-style sci-fi romance with enough twists and turns to keep the reader flipping pages right from beginning to end.
Danger in the Stars is the tenth entry in the series, but can be read standalone. It has a strong connection with the earlier shorter piece (#8.1) Star Cruise: Stowaway which readers of that one will appreciate the tie-in, but a newbie won’t feel like they’re missing anything by jumping right into this one.
Danger in the Stars takes the reader into a criminal organization with the futuristic sci-fi touches to remind one this is set in The Sectors. Introducing a non-human heroine with psychic talent, but a slave-captive of the organization and a hero who is the second in command and enforcer- body guard of the boss lady. The danger for the heroine and feeling of despair in the heroine for her situation quickly drew me in and this became a one-sitting read because I couldn’t put it down. Miriell can see people’s auras thus she can read their feelings and motivations and can manipulate them by connecting to their auras. She was a priestess on her more primitive world until some alien’s attacked and enslaved many from her race. Now, she and a group of others from her world were sold to this crime syndicate and her sister and friends are held hostage to make Miriell the strongest psychic of them all, cooperate. This time, her handler takes her to a leader within the organization who has paid for her talents and she encounters a man who actually sees her as a person and doesn’t stand for her to be abused by her handler even though he will not let her escape when he catches her trying. Despite her talent, Miriell can’t get a read on Conor Stewart and can’t figure out whether he is cold and cruel like the rest and just playing games with her or if something else is in play. There comes a moment when she must make a decision and hope she placed her trust correctly.
Danger in the Stars had wonderful character and good relationship development even as it kept up the suspense and good action sequences right to the end. Many who have followed my reviews of the series know that if I had one complaint, it is some of the abrupt endings. But, this one hit the climax point and had a fabulous denouement and epilogue. I was utterly satisfied, therefore, from cover to cover. Sci-fi Romance lovers really need to consider this series ‘must-reads’.
My full review will post at Books of My Heart on Oct 30th.
Great story about an abducted alien rescued by a heroic human. Throw in some really nasty, really alien aliens and it's a great read. My only quibble, the evil doers are so over the top evil.
3.5 stars Oddly - or maybe not - I have the same complaint about this book as I did about the previous book I read in this series. The romantic platitudes are ridiculously flowery and melodramatic until the very end - they're perfect for the HEA, just not the first time the characters start indicating they have feelings for each other. And it's not just saying "I love you" too soon, it's that "You're the only thing that has ever truly mattered to me and I'll do anything for you because I've fallen in love with you!" is inappropriate for the first move. I'm just saying... they're basically on their second date. Slow your roll and tone it down a couple notches.
BUT. Everything else is so much fun, same as the other book. I didn't like this one as much because a good chunk of the beginning was just Mirielle being psychologically tortured in one way or another. But after that trailed off, things really got moving and didn't stop until right after the climax. Then things dragged a tiny bit and I was just like "AGGH JUST LET THEM BE HAPPY!", but the HEA and epilogue were really great.
I'm definitely enjoying this series and will continue to check them off my to-read list, but I'm reeeally hoping my next choice is a little less soap opera-ish when it comes to the romantic dialogue. Or maybe that's just the way this author writes and I'll have to suck it up and deal.
Danger in the Stars kept me on the edge of my seat and is my favorite Sectors sci-fi romance so far. Author Veronica Scott puts her characters Miriell and Conor between a rock and hard place. I loved the strength and vulnerability of both characters, and how they teamed up to fight the villains—who were well crafted also. The world-building is real and believable. Awesome story and plotting. Loved the ending! If you like sci-fi romance, get this book!
Strong premise featuring an enslaved telepath and the dangerous man who comes to be her protector--or rather, partner since they take turns saving each other. The beginning hooked me and the pacing pulled me swiftly along. While part of the author's Sectors universe, it stands well alone.
Quibble: I wish Mirielle's powers had been spelled out a little more, what she could and could not do.
What a wonderful story from a first time author for me. Miriell is captured by a not so nice alien sector. Her life wasn’t easy as their prisoner. As you keep reading, you are absolutely hooked and have to read as quickly as you can. Intriguing.
This is the story of Miriell, sister of Tyrelle from Star Cruise: Stowaway. The Amarotu Combine (the Mafia-like syndicate) has imprisoned Miriell for the past 4 years. Miriell has the same psychic talents as her sister so the Combine has been using her against their opposition, the same as Tyrelle.
Sent on assignment to another branch of the Combine, Miriell encountered Conor, the 2IC to the branch boss and somehow she sees there're hidden depths to Conor. When a bomb killed all of the highest ranked members of the branch, Miriell managed to save Conor. But then they discovered it was only the start of something much bigger....
Another short but action-packed instalment. Miriell's experience is very similar to Tyrelle but she gets to have much closer encounters with the Mawreg and the spider-like Shemdylann. Very interesting. I wouldn't mind reading more about these psychic beings from Tulavarra.
I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
Last year I read Stowaway by Veronica Scott that was part of the Pets in Space collection. I liked the story and when I found out she had written two more stories about empaths that loosely connect to that one, I was eager to dive into them. I am glad I finally got to read this one. Danger in the Stars is a great sci-fi romance with action, danger, romance and even a touch of fantasy and religion. I also liked the few hints we got about how this story connected to the Stowaway story and the epilogue was awesome!
Danger in the Stars follows Miriell who has been kidnapped from her home planet and now is forced to work for a criminal organization. I liked Miriell. She is a different character than what I usually see in books. At first she acts very obedient, she is basically a slave and has no freedom and she keeps her anger and drive for revenge inside. I thought she acted very realistic and believable given her situation. While she does what her handler wants, inside she hates doing this and she doesn't stop wishing for a better life. And when she gets a scrap of freedom she shows she's force to be reckoned with. Her empathic powers were really cool and I liked how she had to be around nature to build up her powers.
Then there is Connor, who works for another branch of the criminal organization. He meets Mirriel when she and her handler are sent here to help this branch. I found it hard to really get a feel for Connor at first, yes we know he is the love interest, but at first it's hard to get a grasp on who he really is. Which all makes sense later. He was a bit of this grey character, he seemed nice and wanting to do the right thing, but at the same time he had done a lot of bad things too. There's a nice twist involving his character later on.
The pace of this book feels a bit gentle at times, but at the same there is a lot going on and I wanted to keep reading. There are parts with action, some nicely placed plot twists and we get a glimpse of the larger galaxy and what is going on in this region called the Sectors. There also is an almost constant feel of danger due to their situation, but I found that worked here for the most part. While most of the story takes place one planet it did get a more distinctive sci-fi feel later on. And ofcourse Miriell is an alien from another planet with psychic powers.
The romance was well done. It builds slowly and then suddenly picks up pace. There's one sex scene, but for the most part it's a pretty sweet romance. I do admit I thought the romance developed a bit quickly when it finally started progressing, especially given how the main characters didn't have as much time to really connect together. But the author did convince me of their love for each other and it was obvious they cared about each other a lot.
The world building is done subtle, but it's well done. This book is set in a larger world of the Sectors. It's interesting how all these books take place in the same universe and each book seems to give a piece of the world, but at the same time what you learn in each book is very limited. At least that's what I can tell so far from this series. I liked that this book had a bit of overlap with Stowaway, but besides that it pretty much reads as a standalone. I liked learning a bit more about this world and it does feel very thought out, but at the same time I just want to know more so the world can really come alive in my mind.
To summarize: Danger in the Stars was a great read with believable characters. It has danger, action and romance. I liked how realistic Miriell was, she acted meek and obedient at first, but she's focused on finding a way to free herself and her fellow aliens. And when she gets that scrap of freedom she really is a force to be reckoned with. Her powers are great to read about and I was impressed when we learn the full extend of her powers later on. Connor is a bit harder to read at first, but it all makes sense as the story continued. The romance starts of very slowly, but then gains pace and almost felt like it developed a bit too fast. But the author totally convinced me of the love between these two characters and quickly I was rooting for their happy ending. The epilogue was awesome and I also liked how there were some ties between this story and Stowaway.
GR 3.4; Zon 3.9: Both leads likable, sympathetic; romance/sex a little fast-developed
The fact that Miriell can sense souls/auras reconciled me to her attraction to a man who appeared to be one of the bad guys, and who was helping keep her captive. He did manage to show some kindness and morals from the beginning. A few developments did seem slightly abrupt (I'm avoiding spoilers, though — other than the fact that it has a happy ending, something I consider a *requirement* for any tale marketed as a non-tragic romance!), and I personally could've done without Miriell enjoying the peek when his towel gapped, but that's just my idiosyncratic tastes. I do understand the psychology of adrenaline and of seizing life when it may end in a hurry.
Ms. Scott certainly knows how to write, and there were some gripping, suspenseful scenes. I like Miriell's Tulavarran abilities — not all immediately revealed — and the ethos of the bittersweet, desperate scene with the ancient tree. (I have to avoid mentally associating it with Lee & Miller's Jelaza Kazone, or it'd be upsetting.) It just felt a bit "less" than it could have been, in general, but that might be simply my restless mood. The involvement of the Shemdylann and eventually one of the Mawreg themselves certainly weren't boring. There is a prolonged denouement, while Miriell and "Conor" are being separately questioned, more or less under "house (i.e., spaceship cabin) arrest", all from an impatient, worried Miriell's PoV, without the Conor-PoV scenes we were given at certain other stages. Of course, there's a cryptic Mellurean determining several critical factors at this point. Then we reach the hopeful, happy ending, as they agree on a new plan for their future.
Connects to the novella Star Cruise: Stowaway (which is still among my TBR), but stands on its own.
A do love a good sci-fi romance with danger, high stakes, and love found in unexpected places. In this case, the high stakes are Miriell and Conor's lives, the danger is EVERYWHERE, and the love is smokin'.
Miriell is one of the psychics stolen from her planet and held captive by the deadly group known as the Amarotu Combine. Forced to do terrible things with her power, the only thing that keeps her going is the thought that one day she would have her revenge on her her captors. Since I'm ALL FOR brutal revenge against those who exploit others, I totally got where she was coming from.
On the surface, Conor looks like just another Combine lackey. He's in deep with the Combine and stands as second in command to a leader on her way up in the organization. BUT...all isn't as it seems and Conor and Miriell forge a connection. Which I approve of. Sexy connections in dangerous situations are excellent.
Very bad aliens, political maneuverings, and a priestess who can do unbelievable things when properly motivated. I love these Sectors SF men and women. They fight and love harder than most because they never know when the bad guys will try to take everything they care about away from them.
Miriell, a powerful priestess on her home planet, was kidnapped along with quite a few of her people and sold to the leading organized crime organization, the Amarotu Combine. Whenever they want her cooperation to use her power to kill or manipulate people, they not only put a bomb device around her neck, but they hold her sister hostage as well. On one such assignment, she encounters Conor Stewart, who is not what he seems. Miriell can see for herself that he’s a good man underneath his tough exterior, and when danger threatens, she finds that she can count on him to protect her. With danger all around them, their romance is a ray of light in a very dark situation. I really enjoyed the book and now I need to read her sister Tyrelle’s story.
After reading Star Cruise: Stowaway in the Pets in Space anthology, I was excited to learn that Veronica had plans to write the story of Tyrelle's sister. Let me say, the word "danger" in the title is a perfect description of the story. From the very beginning, Mirielle's life is in danger as a slave. But when she falls for one of her captors who is far more than he appears to be, she finds herself in numerous deadly situations. This is an edge-of-your-seat story which I loved, and I look forward to reading more of The Sectors series.
A very good stand alone book that is part if a small series. I read it year's ago but picked it up this week and read it pretty much in one sitting it was that good.
The characters were heroic or pure evil which u need if u have a good story. The exotic background was facinating and rich with common human elements set in a future far far away from here and now.
I'm looking up the rest of this author s books and plan to have an enjoyable time exploring new worlds and a darn good romantic story.
Miriell, another kidnaped empath is being used by the Combine to influence and assassinate people (much like her sister, featured in another story) was. She is brought to another planet to assist a Combine boss in her plans to rise up in the ranks. The boss's lieutenant, Connor seems to the the only person sympathetic to her plight. Connor is actually deep undercover trying to bring the Combine down.
Really scary from our heroine's view who has no future and seems to just wait for spiritual guidance, not coming, or an end to herself with friends and family held captive. Her planet is far away and our green lady spikes interest but not enough to question what she is? Nobody else green all over here. I love the connect with her beliefs that seemed long gone as shield and priestess unite. A good tale!
Fast paced adventure. Highly intense. Twists and surprises that had me hooked immediately, not letting go till the very end. A totally unexpected sweet but simmering romance that became so much more. Danger in the Stars is a story that starts out in the dark underworld but increasingly embraces the light. Could not put it down. Should not be missed. Highly recommend!
Oh my, this book was captivating and surreal. Love it and can not wait to read more of these stories. Crime, drama, love, fights and explosions whew and a whole lot more.
Another wonderful and captivating story from Veronica Scott!! The author creates a world and characters that suck you in and have you vested in the outcome come of their adventures. You will not go wrong reading any of her books!!
Very good. My first Sci Fi romance and not disappointed at all. The balance between the main protagonist relationship and the story is well done. I also enjoyed this universe.
Another exciting Sectors story by a gifted storyteller. The characters are interesting and memorable. The plot has as many twists as a mountain road. My heart ached for the prisoner Miriell as her controller verbally and physically abused her. Only Conor's intervention could save her. No spoiler but the ending was perfect. Great job, Ms. Scott. Another fabulous story.
There’s an excellent reason why Veronica Scott is a Best Seller and a Multiple times Award Winner. She is reliably a great buy.
I just finished her latest book. Danger in the Stars, is absolutely fabulous!
It begins with a powerful telepathic slave from a human'ish' species being brought to this planet to use her talents on a reluctant potential business partner. The first chance Miriell has to escape, she goes for it. Unfortunately, Conor is #2 in Lady Opherra growing crime syndicate and he has to bring the young woman back. Unlike her handler, Conor is firm but gentle and kind, but he cannot allow her to run off. She is here because the big boss thinks she can help Lady Opherra achieve her objective. The Lady Opherra does not believe she needs any assistance and grows to hate Mirielle.
Miriell hates the planet because it has few trees, but lots of buildings. She relies on the essence of nature to heal and strengthen her, so she is weakened by this planet. Fortunately, Conor takes her to various gardens while on the planet. The last one being the most critical. (You’ll have to read the book to find out why.)
While Miriell does not trust easily and despite that Canon is Lady Opherra’s right hand guy, Miriell grows to trust him, and they develop a love that nothing can break, even though they must keep it a secret for most of the book.
The first half is mostly establishing the characters, their loves and hates, plus Lady Opherra’s constant deceit and viciousness. The second half is full-on action and betrayals, then we are rewarded with a fabulous HEA. I couldn’t ask for more!
Miriell is from a race with powers that can make a person do things they would never consider and that makes her a valuable pawn. She is a prisoner and forced to do things to keep her people safe. This time when she arrives she feel a connection and it is to someone who should not make her feel safe. Conor is the second in command to the boss but does not always act as he should. The action here is riveting and the characters up to carrying and keeping the story moving. If you think that you have met Miriell and her people before your may be right. Her people were introduced in a novella that appeared in a SFR collection. A great story that tied up the loose ends that that novella left.
The decision to read Danger in the Stars was a no-brainer for me after having read Veronica Scott’s Star Cruise: Stowaway in the Pets in Space Anthology. Danger in the Stars, the follow up to Stowaway, continues to develop that crime syndicate known as the Combine, their collaboration with the Shemdylann, and their use of slaves. Specifically, slaves with psychic powers like Miriell, priestess of Thuun.
Miriell is an empath. She also seems to have a bit of a telpathic ablity, being able to sense not only emotions, but also intent. Miriell has the added ability to put thoughts into a person’s mind. And more. This makes Miriell much more dangerous than her captors believe her to be. And at the same time, very interesting.
At first glance, Conor is a thug. Second-in-command to a Combine leader, so, a bad guy. But there is more to him than meets the eye (or there would not be much of a story). It is difficult to say too much more about Conor without spoilers, so just know Conor is a character worth getting to know – good or bad.
The first part of Danger in the Stars is about the slave, Miriell, trying to prove herself to Conor’s boss Lady Opherra. The proof Opherra is looking for requires Miriell to do terrible things. The proving process runs concurently with the process in which Miriell and Conor become better acquainted, even if they both have secrets that make it hard to trust one another. The bad guy and the heroine make a most interesting combination that have more in common than they realize.
And then, things start to get ugly. Opherra’s ambition takes them all to a place where the danger increases exponentially. As if a large crime syndicate wasn’t enough. As the stakes got higher, the intensity of the story increased and kept me reading late into the night to finish the book.
I’ve read a few other books in Veronica Scott’s Sectors SF Romance series. There are many common threads, but the one that most intrigues me is the elder race – the Mellureans. Each Sectors story offers just a bit of interesting info about them. Danger in the Stars has a Mellurean character in it that plays a bigger role than I’ve seen of the Mellureans so far. But still, there is more that is not know about the Mellurean’s than is known. Which keeps them in that intriguing category.
I recommend Danger in the Stars for sci fi exploits and intrigue, exotic locations, romance and redemption. Once again, Veronica Scott has delivered a 5-star adventure!
The author provided a copy of her book so that I could bring you this honest review.
