Can You Feel Your Blood Drain...

Couples are being slaughtered in their homes; women drained of blood, men violently beaten. There are no clues to track the killer, no explanation as to why an increasing amount of blood is being removed from the crime scenes.

Detective Sergeant Rhys Morgan is seconded to the ‘Couples Killer’ investigation. Tormented by vivid nightmares, he hasn’t slept soundly for weeks becoming convinced a creature from these nightmares poses a threat to him and his family. His behaviour becomes increasingly erratic causing his bosses to wonder if he’s the right man for the job.

As clues to the killer’s identity are uncovered, the line between what is real and what cannot be starts to blur and Rhys discovers the answer to catching the killer and exorcising his own demons, may be as irrational as he fears.

This dark and disturbing debut novel is a page-turner you will not be able to put down.

To start with, Night is Watching feels a bit like a crime thriller, but for me it definitely comes under the horror genre.

Rhys is very much out of his comfort zone. He usually investigates living people so when he gets put on a case involving dead people, he is really struggling. It affects him mentally which affects his home and work life.

Things start to get very dark and it’s very much like reading of someone losing their mind. Rhys’s wife as well as his work colleagues are really concerned about him. There’s only his young son that has any faith in him.

I was really interested in the killings and was dying to find out who was behind the murders. I liked Rhys but wanted to give him a good shake to sort himself out. It felt like he was very misunderstood and I wanted people to be able to understand him and see how he sees things.

Night Is Watching is a mess with your head read. There is plenty of horror and build up to the story with a satisfying ending. Definitely one for horror fans.

My thanks to the author for an advanced readers copy. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

Well jeepers-friggin-creepers! This was NOT what I was expecting at all! Paranoia, fear, revenge, a haunting balance between the known and unknown – all can be found within the pages of this book! The underlying theme being the soul-stirring question of whether or not what you know to be true is true after all. Those around you questioning your beliefs – making you question them yourself! Gave me bloody goosebumps! I have to say, I was undecided on my rating at first as there was just so much going on and I had in my head that this was a crime thriller – but the more I thought about it, the more I realised that as a crime thriller this would be a 3.5 but as a horror book….definitely a 4!

The plot is fast-paced and I did race through the pages as I just needed to know WTF was happening!! What I loved about this book was the cross- genre aspect. It was horror mixed with crime thriller and a dabble in the supernatural! All cleverly wrapped up so I was biting my nails, whilst playing detective and it actually got me thinking about what I would do in a similar situation – probably wet myself if I am honest! Bejaysus, it was eery, creepy yet totally mesmerising. You have to suspend your beliefs to read this book as it is not your average police procedural, that is for sure!

Good chracterisation really brought the story to life. There were a lot of characters, and I did initially struggle to keep up, but once I did- the story really flowed. I will, as always, focus on those characters that had more of an impact, in my opinion. Rhys Morgan (the main character) is a family man but the current case he is working on and his own unsolved family tragedy years before, causes him to neglect those around him. He is tormented, determined but also very likeable – it took a while, but he grew on me and I found myself willing him to achive his end goal(s). He has two kids and his wife Anna. I have to be honest, she annoyed me. I don’t know why, I just did not take to her at all, but I love Rhys’ son, Harry. He seemed to be the only one who understood his father.

“Vile Boy”- Well OMFG! The whole storyline surrounding this character was hard on the heart, that’s for sure! I didn’t know whether to feel sorry for him or run as fast as I can. Some might find his story a wee bit tough to bear, but then – if you are not afraid of challenging stories that make you feel a bit uncomfortable (like me) – you will see it for what it is and absorb the emotions as part of the plot.

Kier Finnegan- he is a bit of a mystery and for some reason, Prince Lestat from the Anne Rice novels would not leave my head! Who is this guy? What does he know? Really thought this character was fantastic!

Do I recommend this book? As a debut novel, this certainly left me with a desire to read more from this author so HELL YEAH, I do! If sinister, dark, disturbing and chilling reads are what you are after, head over to amazon by clicking the book below and grab yourself a copy now!

#NightIsWatching opens with a bang…well not so much of a bang – more a #killerhook that drags you in and pulls no punches and it doesn’t stop all the way through! Blood features heavily in this book and it isn’t for the faint-hearted! DS Rhys Morgan has been drafted in from Missing Persons to the “Couples Killing Investigation” and it is clear from the start that he is struggling – he is a man tormented indeed! A complex but gripping plotline kept me hooked from the start as it soon became clear that there was more at play simply than just a sadistic serial killer! #NightIsWatching gives you a double-edged plot – there is the serial killer plot but winding its way through there is a darker and more sub-human plotline at work – which one will triumph?! Twists and turns throughout kept me engrossed and my head spinning to the point I didn’t know what was real and what was not and it is clear that there is another book to look out for in this series!

God, I could feel the terror that Rhys Morgan was experiencing – at times I felt absolutely paralysed with the fear and I’m not going to lie, I was a little bit scared turning out the lights at night in case his demons came to visit me! With Rhys, Lucy has created a character where the reader cannot fail to be drawn inside of his head – although you may not want to stay there too long! Throughout the book, we can see his descent into a living hell and how he came to be there! It is going to be interesting to see how he develops as the series continues. Oh and the play between him and his antagonist (not going to give any clues here as I don’t want to give anything away!) – I could see this being played out in a horror film for sure!

Anna, Rhys’ wife irritated me, if I am completely honest, at times I wanted to shake her she seemed like such a sap. Her anger at Rhys was feeble, as was her support for him as it was clear that he was losing his grip on reality. Their relationship was obviously shaky from the outset and I don’t think that she would have stayed as long as she did.

DS Quinn, Rhys’ colleague – oh god I hated him – what an arrogant, nasty little man he was and I could just visualise him stabbing everyone in the back during his career; he belittled – I so wished that Rhys’ demons would go get him!

#NightIsWatching fits into the horror /supernatural genre with some crime fiction thrown in and the serial killer element of the novel throws up the subject of abuse in childhood and the devastating imprint this can leave on the victim. However, the main essence of this novel is the supernatural and the reader is taken on a very dark and disturbing journey throughout!

When I first started reading #NightIsWatching, I thought it was going to be a straightforward serial killer/crime fiction novel (how messed up is my head when I think these are straightforward) but it soon became clear that this was something much darker and more of the horror genre. Once I got my head around this, I was able to embrace the journey that I was taken on and it left me feeling bloody terrified I can tell you! Lucy’s debut novel is a dark and disturbing horror that messed with my head big time and perfect for fans of horror fiction!

I feel like I've been unjust with my 1-star rating of 'The Night is Watching', but my rating reflects how I feel upon completion. It's not that it was a badly written book, it's just not something that I wanted or needed to read.

I purchased 'The Night is Watching' off Amazon, after reading the brief intro of the book and just thought it was going to be a police procedural and I'd be happy camper. Without spoiling the book for those of you yet to read it, let's just say that it should really be classified as horror/fantasy.

Honestly, I don't want this review to reflect badly on the book or on Lucy, as I'd read another book by her if it wasn't in the same vein. I'd truly just like this book to be advertised for what it actually is.

Gripping read!

I enjoyed this book... A good detective novel with a bitingly good twist.
I was a little disappointed at the end as it was very abrupt, maybe it was a cliffhanger??
I feel some questions where left unanswered. Saying this, all in all it held me until the end...worth a read.

A serial killer (dubbed the “Couples Killer”) and a police investigation which seems to be going nowhere – a very promising start to Night is Watching. Then it just got better as Lucy Cameron is not holding back.

The killer’s female victims are strung up and (eventually) their bodies drained of blood. The victim’s husband will also be found at the scene of the crime…battered, beaten and stuffed into a cupboard away from their spouse. This is not a story for the faint of heart and I need to highlight that the story will take a turn into horror territory – it is not by chance that the description (above) makes reference to Rhys Morgan’s demons.

Morgan is the detective brought into the murder squad to assist with the hunt for the Couples Killer. His home life is not in a good place, he and his wife are walking on eggshells around each other and the memory of Morgan’s sister (who vanished from his life when he was a child) hangs heavy over the household. Morgan is obsessive over the memory of his sister and despite the patience and tolerance of his wife it is clear that his inability to move on is creating real problems for his marriage.

Readers are treated to an early sense of creepy tension when a strange man moves into a house on Morgan’s street. Lucy Cameron unsettles us early with the feeling that something odd has arrived in our midst. Morgan learns that the detective that was leading the investigation has had a breakdown, leads all need rechecked as the police find their colleague had become fixated on supernatural angles to the killings However, as Rhys starts to become involved within the case he also finds that there are some very unusual incidents occurring and he becomes fixated upon his new neighbour.

Night Is Watching Lucy Cameron does a great job of balancing a story about a murder investigation while phasing in elements of dark horror. What I felt was done particularly well was how we see the impact of the horrific and unsettling events that Rhys Morgan has to face when it begins to impact upon his mental health. When Morgan is adamant he is on the track of a killer his colleagues are questioning his ability to remain part of the investigative team.

Night is Watching is a brilliant read for those that like their crime stories with a horror or supernatural twist. If you have read and enjoyed James Oswald or Caroline Mitchell’s books (and you really should) then Night is Watching is one for you.
