Loved this travelogue.

I am so glad there are travel agents offering tourism packages. Glad because they pull the crowd interested in travelling to "places", covering all the "tourist attractions", and getting hell loads of selfies. Glad because these tourism packages segregate those travellers from this other kind which this book is about.

I feel travelling is much more about people and their culture, rather than about places which is shallow and superficial. Travelling is incomplete without historical context and living among local people to soak in a part of their lives.
Travelling is more about getting those experiences rather than being a passive observant.

And may be that's the reason this booked touched many a chords in my heart, because it reflects these practices. Author has done a nice job of not just maintaining a travelling diary, but also generously pouring out those unearthed cultural stories and backgrounds.

Inspires for quality travelling. If you love to travel, you will surely relate to many of the things described in this book.
A decent debut sprinkled with little bit of philosophical nuggets on life and travelling.

'इनरलाइन पास' यात्राकार उमेश पंत द्वारा 2015 में आदि कैलास-ओम पर्वत का यात्रा वृत्तांत है. अठारह दिनों के इस यात्रा का ब्यौरा उन्होंने इस किताब में बखूबी किया है. जो हर दिन के हिसाब से, पहले दिन से शुरू होकर अठारहवे दिन तक सिलसिलेवार है. जिससे हर दिन का ब्यौरा पाठक को क्रमिक तौर पर मिल जाता है. किताब के शुरूआती पन्ने में दी गई मानचित्र को देखते-पढ़ते हुए इस यात्रा को महसूस करते है. जो दुरूह होने के साथ-साथ रोमांच से भरा है. यात्राकार ने अपने जीये गए लम्हों का ताना-बाना सरल शब्दों में किया है. जिससे पाठक अंततः बंधा रहता है.

एक यात्राकार इतिहास का जानकार हो तो सफ़र और भी महत्त्वपूर्ण हो उठता है. क्योंकि आप तब रुककर ठहर कर पड़ताल करने में भी कहीं-न-कहीं रुचि रखते हैं. किताब की खासियत यह भी है इसमें पहाड़ो का इतिहास, साथ ही साथ तिब्बत-चीन के पुराने व्यापार के स्वर्णिम समय के दृश्य भी दिख जाते है. पड़ाव में पड़े रास्तों एवं गाँवों से गुज़रते हुए इसके स्वर्णिम इतिहास को ध्यान में रखकर आप उस दौर की कल्पना करने लगते है. वही पहाड़ की त्रासदी भी दर्ज है. और सफ़र में साथ मिलने वालों साथियों का ब्यौरा. जिससे आप भी जुड़ते जाते है.

When you start Innerline Pass it kind of looks like a start of a web that you know will be complete at the last page of the book.
Author starts in a way casual but wonderful language that eventually strikes chord and you speed through the chapters very swiftly partly because of the lucid but controlled descriptions and partly because the desire to know about the next day and next adventure builds up you speed to turn the pages.

The beauties, the scenic environment, the local crops , the background stories about the towns and villages en-route is intelligently spread over the course of the destination i.e; Adi-Kailash.Reader is sometimes presented with a very artistic view of the surroundings forcing them to imagine themselves in the midst of the situations.

Author is very near to the nature and it is very much visible in his intent and description of the travelogue that he has presented to us. We hope to hear more from you Umesh Pant.

Innerline pass,
एक यात्रा वृत्तांत - ओम पर्वत और आदि कैलाश का।
कुछ समय पहले जब मैं एक नई किताब पढ़ने को ढूंढ रही थी तो amazon पर दिखी और रिव्यू चूंकि काफी अच्छे थे तो खरीद ली थी।

उमेश पंत जी ने अपनी १८ दिन के यात्रा के वृतान्त को काफी अच्छे शब्दों मे पिरोकर प्रस्तुत किया है।
कुछ तस्वीरें और होती है, ऐसा लगा कि अच्छा लगता।

महज १५९ पन्नों मे दिल्ली से धारचुला और ओम पर्वत की यात्रा, बीच में आते सारे पड़ाव, गाँव और साथ ही हिमालयी क्षेत्रों की वो चुनौतिया, बहुत ही अच्छा वर्णन किया है।
बांध लेने वाली किताब है।

बेहतरीन चुनौतीपूर्ण सफर

सबसे पहले तो आपको ऐसे सफर से सही सलामत आने की बधाई। ऐसा लग रहा था इस सफर पर हम भी आपके साथ थे। सफर और मंजिल की खूबसूरती के साथ साथ आपने पहाड़ों में जीवन जीने वाले की समस्याओं को आपने बड़ी गहराई से उजागर किया है। ऐसे जीवन में तो हर रोज जिंदा रहने की जंग लड़नी पड़ती है। लेकिन शायद यही कुदरत है जो खूबसूरत होने के साथ खतरनाक भी है।

I picked this book to read because of its title. A few months ago I had been to Arunachal Pradesh and we had to procure an innerline pass to enter the state. I assumed that this book is about author's travel to Northeast.
Interestingly, the book was about a much harder and exciting on-foot journey to Nepal. The best thing about the book is that the author just doesn't describe the places en route but also stories of people living there.
The night spent in the forest to survive literally gave me goosebumps. I could imagine myself stuck in that kind of horror and fighting for life.
Overall a must read for travel enthusiast

यूँ तो मै भी जन्म से पहाड़ी ही हूँ। पर पहाड़ों पर रहना और पहाड़ों पर घूमने जाना दो अलग-अलग दिशाओं में जानी वाली सड़क है। मेरा ज्यादातर जीवन बड़े शहर में बीता। कभी-कभार अपने गाँव जाने का मौका मिलता तो पाँच किलोमीटर की पैदल यात्रा करनी पड़ती थी। भला हो सरकार का उन्होंने अब वहाँ सड़क बनवा दी है, यह बात और है की अब गाँव खाली हो गया है। पूरा गाँव देहरादून आ कर बस गया है और पहाड़ों में रह गयी है सिर्फ कुछ टूटी - फूटी यादें।

जिन विकट परिस्थितियों को लेखक ने अपनी यात्रा में भोगा, वह यहाँ के स्थानीय निवासियों की जिंदगी का आम हिस्सा है। वैसे लेखक उमेश पंत जी के लिए भी यह कोई नयी बात नहीं होगी, क्योंकि वे भी इन्ही पहाड़ों से सम्बन्ध रखते हैं। वे भी इन समस्यों को काफी हद तक समझते होंगे।

इस किताब के आखरी अधयाय में जिस बालक की असमय मृत्यु का जिक्र है, उस रास्ते से कुछ ही समय बाद उसकी माता जी जरूर गयी होंगी। वह, उनका परिवार और उनके गाँव वाले जितनी बार वहाँ से गुजरेंगे, उन्हें उतनी बार उस बालक का चेहरा नज़र आएगा। पर वे वहाँ से आना-जाना छोड़ेंगे नहीं। ऐसी ही घटनाएं और दुर्घटनायें पहाड़ियों को मजबूत, और मजबूत बनती हैं।

पहाड़ों का जीवन सिर्फ शब्दों में बयान करना मुश्किल है, पर जीना तो और मुश्किल है।

इन बातों को ध्यान में रखते हुए पहड़ों के रहवासी अपने यहाँ आने वाले सभी अतिथयों को भावनात्मक रूप से हमेशा मदद को तैयार रहते हैं। उनके दर्द को अपना समझते हैं। उनके गाँव के सीमा में हुए हर अनिष्ट को अपना संकट मानते हैं और मानवीय मूल्यों को समझते हुए सभी एक-दूसरे का सहयोग हमेशा करते हैं।

ओलिंपिक खेलों में कुछ किलो का भार कुछ सेकंडों के लिए उठाने पर खिलाडी को गोल्ड मैडल मिल जाता है। पर एक पहाड़ी स्त्री के लिए उस भार से दुगना-तिगुना वजन रोज उठा कर कई किलोमीटर आना-जाना पड़ता है। पुरषों की स्तिथि भी कोई जयदा अच्छी नहीं है। पर वे कुछ कमाने-धमाने के नाम पर गाँव से निकल कर शहर का रुख कर लेते हैं और इन कठिनाइयों से कुछ हद तक बच जातें हैं।

यह किताब एक सजीव यात्रा वृत्रांत है जिसके हर शब्द को इस कलात्मक ढंग से लिखा गया है की मनो पाठक स्वयं इस यात्रा को कर रहा है। थोड़ी कमी इस पुस्तक में मुझे यह लगी की लेखक अपने खींचे हुए अन्य चित्रों को भी अपनी पुस्तक में जगह दे देते। पर उससे पुस्तक की कीमत बढ़ जाती और यही सोच कर लेखक ने सीमित चित्रों में अपनी बात कही है। एक बार नहीं बल्कि बार-बार पढ़ने का मन करता है। बहुत बेहतरीन किताब है।

एक बार अवश्य पढ़ें।

I picked up this book on a whim,at one of my friend's house.I was soon completely surprised with it's quality.As I started reading,the author grasped me with his articulation of what travel means.Mr. Pant doesn't seem to be a fan of city life and repeatedly alludes to the differences in people's attitudes,nature and himself.He emerges as a different person at the other side of the journey.

What sets "Innerline Pass" apart from a run-of-the-mill travelogue is the insight into the culture of the many regions and villages the author and his friends come across.I had no idea of a centuries old bustling trade(now defunct) between a village in Uttarakhand and Tibet.Or of a river that supposedly separates Nepal & India,still under dispute.Or of a very sexually open village where 18-22 year old girls & boys are left on their own to find their match.Or of a Pandit who helped the Britishers map out the distance between many points and places in the upper,remote reaches of Uttarakhand.Many incidents here re-iterated to me the notion that man is a slave of his conditions.The cultures evolve owing to the geography,resources and climate any place affords.The author seems to be very poetically inspired at places too.There is this amazing metaphor pretty early on which translates to "as if the carpet of the wind shook away the dust of noise and then washed it away with silence". The context will make you appreciate this quip even more.Spread over almost a 3 week period,the book gives a step-by-step account of the whole journey.The aesthetic sense of the photographer in the author comes out in his descriptions of the many sceneries he encounters.

This is a breezy read and can be finished on a 2-3 hour train journey.The book is available on Amazon.
