How do we overcome those battles in our lives that we always seem to be fighting? Learn to overcome the “giants” in your life—the fears and insecurities that keep you from reaching your full potential.
It’s likely you have a threatening giant in your an adversary or stronghold that’s diminishing your ability to live a full and free life. Frozen in the grip of rejection, fear, anger, or addiction, we lose sight of the promise God has for our lives. Demoralized and defeated, we settle for far less than his best.
In Goliath Must Fall, pastor Louie Giglio uncovers a newfound twist in the classic story of David and Goliath. It is not God's plan for you to live with a giant standing in the middle of your life, demoralizing you day after day. Our freedom and God's glory are forever interwoven into one story. God does want us to live free. He wants us to recognize that He's already killed the giant.
In Goliath Must Fall,
Hope and encouragement that God has a better plan for you—a plan for you to live in victoryPowerful insights from the Biblical story of David How to silence your giants once and for allThe key to living free from our giants is not better slingshot accuracy but keeping our eyes on the one and only giant-slayer—Jesus. Once you understand the source of your giants, you can ensure that whatever your affliction is, it can, will, and must fall with the power of Jesus. Put your hope in God and watch Goliath fall.
one of my favorite sermons by louie is “don’t give the enemy a seat at your table” and i was happy to discover that much of that sermon is included in this book! this book is so encouraging and it all points back to Jesus, the david in our david and goliath story. he conquered our giants at the cross and we can walk in freedom because Jesus has already won the battle. “our giants are dead, and our God is on his throne.” he is our victory. 🤍🕊
This book had two worthwhile things to say. First; in the account of David and Goliath, David represents Jesus, not us. Second; Jesus delivers us for God's glory, not our own. Much of the rest of the book was a mediocre rehash of worldly wisdom (pop psychology) that is not very helpful and not what Christians, or anyone else, really needs. Although, to be fair, the author did frequently point to Jesus as the one who can provide what we really need. I just wish a lot of the more worldly wisdom had been left out.
Using the story of David and Goliath as the background, Louie Giglio writes the wonderful book on overcoming the "giants" we face in our lives—giants like anger, fear, addiction, etc. The solution is clear, these giants not just can fall, they MUST fall! Through personal stories and strong biblical teaching, Giglio makes a wonderful case for the freedom God wants each of us to have in our lives. Now to be clear, I have heard teachings relating the story of the biblical giant killer to overcoming our struggles before, but there is something very unique and very correct here. Most authors writing books like this one will tell us we're to be like David, we're the giant killers, etc. Giglio takes a different tack and I believe it is the correct ones. You see, he goes to great lengths to remind the reader that we are not the giant killer in this story, Jesus is and so it is with us. The ultimate victory in our battle against the giants we face will not be ours. It is Jesus who will win the battle and it is Jesus who will set us free. This is an excellent book that everyone who has ever struggled with anything should read.
A solid book that is clear and accessible; and full of biblical truth. Giglio takes on the most common Goliaths in readers’ lives and declares their defeat with well placed confidence.
This is a simple truth well told, and recommended. It feels harsh to critique it but I longed for more depth and perhaps it was my own lack of attention that led to me feeling it never quite got out of the shallow end. For a message that is surely universal I too often felt I wasn’t the intended audience. Giglio’s deep passion doesn’t quite translate to the page and grab you in the same way his sermons can, and I finished wanting just a bit more.
Such harsh critique aside, this remains a valuable contribution that will no doubt touch those with ears to listen.
“Yes, our giants can fall. In fact, our giants must fall.”
“Don’t give the enemy a seat at your table.”
“Satan was defeated in the cross. Jesus has won the victory. End of story.”
I really wanted to like this one. Truly. In fact, there are some decent nuggets of truth throughout. I liked the story of David and Goliath and how it can apply to the giants in our own lives. I liked how he compares David to Jesus, rather than us seeing ourselves in David. And then it runs out of steam really quick.
The issue in this book is the simplicity. In each chapter, there is something that must fall (i.e. anger, addiction, etc). But each one gives the answer to each “giant” is to turn to Jesus. Well, yes, I 100% agree with that, but I knew that without reading a 200+ page book. Give a little something else like better examples and illustrations, something to justify an entire book. It’s simplistic to say to overcome addiction by turning to Jesus without any practical application of what that means. When I read books by Kyle Idleman or Francis Chan, this is what they do.
Also, I took off a star because of no mention of baptism but some sort of version of a sinner’s prayer. A missed opportunity for sure. So I don’t see myself reading any Louie Giglio book in the future.
Despite the fact that he says you don't have to slay your giant because Jesus already did it, there are a lot of places it felt like I was being told to still stand up and fight my giants. Also, I take issue with the idea that Jesus slayed things like fear and comfort and addiction. While it's true that faith can bring healing into those dark places in our life, Jesus conquered sin and death. Jesus is not the antidote to everything that bothers me. There is much good advice in the book but it seems oversimplified.
Louie did an excellent job. Conceptually, it was a very easy read. He tells the story of David in Goliath, but he puts it in a perspective you haven’t heard before. The thing I loved most about this book was how practical it was. It wasn’t just a book about getting you all hyped up, ready for battle. Louie’s focus was on Jesus, and he does a great job teaching us how to make that our focus as well. Totally recommend!!!
I’ve always loved the story of David and Goliath. I’ve memorized parts of this passage because it holds so much truth. This book has opened my eyes to look at this story in a whole new way. I will never look at the story the same and that is a good thing.
David and Goliath story, but plot twist, Jesus is David and not us. We've been trying to rely on our own strength to content in a battle that's already won.
I like reading Louie Giglio. He is fun, a great story-teller, and his theology explanations are excellent. My favorite part of this book was the chapter "Rejection Must Fall". That chapter may be important enough to have its own book.
This is a very approachable read and has content that can be impactful for people in all stages of life and faith. For me it was a little long for the amount of content. There was a lot of focus on David and Goliath and I chose to slim past a lot of the retelling.
One of my favorite books I’ve read lately, there’s a lot of insightful and helpful things I discovered reading this about faith in general and good takes on deeper questions I hear a lot of people asking. Would recommend and would probably reread in the future.
*** Also, if you have a chance to either listen to the podcast or watch there is a five part series he did on this available. You can watch it using the TBN app. Excellent!!!!
“Jesus wants to take down our giants so we can walk free and have the life He wants us to live. And He wants to do that so His name can be exalted above every other name in our world. That’s the reason that surpasses all other reasons. It’s so people around us look at our lives and say, ‘Your God is truly God.’”
Goliath Must Fall is the latest book from preacher Louie Giglio, the man behind the Passion Movement, comprised of Passion Conferences, Passion City Church, Passion Publishing, and sixstepsrecords, and the founder of Passion Global Institute. If you're not familiar with the Passion movement, it's a gathering for the college-aged kids to help them to live in such a way that their journey on earth counts for what is most important in the end.
In Goliath Must Fall, Giglio uses the story of David, a mere shepherd, who takes a stand against insurmountable odds after the giant Goliath insults David's God. David stands up and challenges Goliath after King Saul and his troops listen to Goliath's taunts for a full 40 days. And he does so without the protection of armor or an army.
Many of us have been taught that we are David and we can defeat our Goliaths but that's just wrong. Our Goliaths have been defeated on the cross. That makes our David Jesus.
Giglio goes on to show how we can live a life of victory over our giants. I really, really enjoyed this book. I wish that I had read Goliath Must Fall much earlier in my Christian walk. The book is an easy read and would be good for those in high school and older who are learning about how to live a victorious Christian life and how to increase their faith. I highly recommend it.
This was my first time reading a book by Louie Giglio and I’m impressed. His story telling is phenomenal and his writing is very relatable. His ideas are not to grand. This is one of the few books I’ve read that doesn’t spend a ton of time magnifying the topic without ever presenting a solution. You could stop at the end of every chapter and walk away with a plan on how to tackle giants. Very practical and useful. It’s also an easy read. Just 240 pages and it feels long at times but it’s very easy to get through and enjoyable. Overall I loved the fresh perspective on the David and Goliath story. I’ve never heard it broken down from this position and that’s what drives the freshness of this book! Highly recommend it!
I attended several Passion conferences as a college student and have heard Louie Giglio preach at Passion City Church on trips to Atlanta, and I was excited to grab his latest book, because he always brings a WORD. This one was no different-- bold, unapologetic, Bible-focused, powerful, and convicting. Centered on the story of David and Goliath, Giglio talks about how fear, rejection, addiction, anger, and comfort all must fall, and let me tell you, it will PREACH. The story isn't cliche (even if you've heard the Sunday School version a million times) and I walked away with so much more insight into this story and what it means for my life-- it's so good. Highly recommend this one.
I love this view of David & Goliath and the application to the giants in my own life. It's a picture I won't easily or quickly forget. A couple of the giants I readily knew in advance that it was standing before me. As I listened to the other chapters, I could see bits and pieces of them around me. Fear, rejection, addiction, anger, comfort ... they all surround us and seek to keep us limited. Doubtful. Impotent. But we can be different. With the encouragement in this book, I am confidently striding forward declaring that we must be different, one step at a time.
Good book just somewhat repetitive. Love the topic but sometimes it feels like wasn’t saturated in scripture as much as I would’ve liked (not saying anything was off but would’ve love to see more references)
5⭐️! I bought this book back in 2020 thinking it was the exact book I needed for that season, but instead it sat on my shelf until a few weeks ago when I picked it up again and devoured it. Coming out of an extremely difficult season where I felt like my “giants” were unlimited and never-ending, this book felt very healing for me.
I read some of the one and two star reviews, and a lot of people mentioned that it’s over simplistic. I disagree with that idea though. Louie Giglio mentions in every chapter that the number one thing we need to do is to stop fixing our eyes on our giants, and instead fix our eyes on the One who has already defeated them. Maybe that sounds simplistic, but that’s not an easy thing to do. Giglio doesn’t end his advice there, and mentions many times that sometimes a person needs counseling/rest/close friends/spiritual prayer/medication in order to get us out of the holes we are in. So no, it’s not over simplistic, it’s hard work, but work worth doing.
As a person who has fought so much with mental and physical health in the last two years, this concept has really changed my perspective, and made my giants seem smaller than I gave them credit for. My giants are already dead. But the enemy is going to keep fighting me with them in order to take Glory away from God-not on my watch.
If I could sum it up in a few quotes it would be these:
“As long as our eyes are on the problem, and the solution lies within ourselves, the exes are going to pile up on the calendars of our fights, marking the days nothing has changed… but all of that changes the moment we stop staring at our giant, and lock eyes with Jesus”. (p 23)
“Jesus wants to take down our Giants so we can walk free and have the life he wants us to live. And he wants to do that so his name can be exalted above every other name in our world. That’s the reason that surpasses all other reasons. It’s so people around us look at our lives and say, ‘your God is truly God.’” (p 227)

This book was very practical and insightful. The author gave me a fresh look at the familiar story of David and Goliath, and made application in ways I hadn't seen before. The book talks about specific giants that we encounter in our life, and the two that were most poignant for me were fear and addictions. Great book, very reminiscent of "Gods at War" by Kyle Idleman, but with more of a storytelling style.
This book was an incredible read! It was so simple and easy too, packed full of practical knowledge. My favorite portions in each chapter involved Louis Giglio’s dissection of the root causes of each of our “Giants”. For example, fear comes from three primary roots - conditioning, controlling, and concealing. There were so many giants I didn’t think were at play in my life, with which I’ve actually been facing very obvious struggles! But, God is so much greater than those giants, and if I keep my eyes on Him, I can remember that they’ve already fallen!
this book took me forever to read, but i’m so glad i finished it. for a short time i wanted to ignore what God was saying to me because i was comfortable having my giants attack me. i didn’t know anything else. through reading this book i soon discovered that i was letting the “enemy sit at my table” and i didn’t have my full trust in God. i would recommend louie giglios books (especially this one) because it’s a real eye opener and life changer.
I love Louie Giglio, and I love both the opening and closing chapters of this book. The middle chapters, which dealt with specific giants felt a bit too “topical sermon, stretching Scripture to make a point” to me, but I’m still giving it 3.5 stars because of the conviction and encouragement of the introduction and closing.
This was an easy read about slaying the giants in our lives (fear, rejection, comfort, anger, & addiction) through the obvious lens of David and Goliath and how doing this can glorify God. Audiobook was perfect for this content, it felt like a church sermon or a TED talk
Still a solid 5 star read for me. I loved the audiobook this time around. I still have the same thoughts as I did when I first read this book: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....
I don’t often read a book more than once. I read and pass it on to someone else so that they may enjoy it as much as I. This one won’t be going anywhere but on my shelf for reference and a reread. God has blessed Louie with a gift for sharing the Word of God.
One of the best Christian/Spiritual Growth books I’ve read. So powerful, encouraging and freeing. The story of David and Goliath is vividly told and with a twist...the Lord used this book to help me face a giant in my life I didn’t even know was there. So thankful.
I always learn a lot from Louie Giglio and I am thankful for his teachings! This is a good book but it sometimes just felt too surface level when dealing with some big issues. But the theme of the book is great!
