The only member of the SS Reconnaissance not to reach the shuttle in time, Brinley Lawson never thought she’d survive the crash. Nobody expected her to survive the healing process either, but now, in the home of the same magistrate who tried and found her guilty of crimes against Pra’kir, Brinley knows only that she can’t stay any more than she can leave. However, if he thinks she’ll blindly obey any command he makes, then he can think again. His punishments might leave her body aching, both with pain and sensual arousal, but Brinley has never been a woman to blindly submit to anyone, much less an alien lawyer.
Everyone is guilty of something. That is the motto dominant Rowth Lashat lives by and he doesn’t consider the diminutive human female lying battered and broken in her hospital bed to be any different. Not until she issues that first irresistible challenge and suddenly he finds his authority being pricked at every turn. Still, it’s not her constant defiance that forces him to bend the rules, bringing her into his home, into his care… and even into his bed. It’s something much more important. Though winning her submission calls to him, it’s Brinley’s cooperation that Rowth needs. Hopefully, before it’s too late.
She survived the crash.
He’ll make her wish she hadn’t.
Captives of Pra’kir.
Note: This is a BDSM-themed romance that includes elements of impact play, anal punishments, bondage and consensual-non-consent. If any of these themes bother you, please do not buy this book.
Fortunate enough to live with my Daddy Dom, I am a Little, coffee fanatic, dog and cat mom, was an administrator for six years at my local BDSM dungeon, and have since become a Utah resident and submissive to the love of my life. An International and USA Bestselling Author several times over, I have penned more than 160 novels, novellas and short stories, and am the author of the Masters of the Castle and Daddy’s Little series.
The first book in the Captives of Pra'kir Book 1 book, written by 5 different authors. I am huge Maren Smith Snith fan, so I was really looking forward to this book and it didn’t disappoint. The prologue of the book just suck you right into the story, it is really exciting and thrilling. Brinley and Rowth are two complicated characters both have their good and their bad sides and things arent always as they seem. There is great chemistry and sexy scene as only maren Smith can write. The world is really similair to Earth in some ways, but completly different in other ways. The worldbuilding was rich. One of my favorite characters was Rog, he was so funny. I am looking forward to reading the other books.
This book ticked me off so much. First of all, Brinley and her fellow astronauts barely survived their crash to the Hero's planet. Then they get charged with all these crazy things like their space ship littering their world and entering without permission. It makes no sense. It was infuriating, they were in trouble for trying to keep themselves alive in an emergency situation.
Then the guy who is responsible for her, I don't even remember his name and I don't care, he punishes her for everything. All these injustices against her and she caves and melts for him. No. I saw no redeeming qualities with this guy. I ended up skipping ahead to see if it got better, and it totally didn't. I didn't read this book all the way through and I'm glad I didn't waste my time. I really didn't like it.
This is a great start to the series. When a ship from Earth crashes on to Pra'Kir the survivors are taken prisoner. Brinley isnt so lucky. She was severely injured and she ended up needing a great deal of "repair" and healing. Rowth is the Great Magistrate and has taken it upon himself to "work" with Brin and help her. Brin's ship mates are also in need of help. So what does he devise. He goes to the Counsel and they are all plead guilty. But on this planet, anyone under 35yrs is an infant and needs schooling. This is where the fun begins.
This line alone, from the book, had me laughing. "Is this....a masturbation list....or will....you be listing....any actual....rules on this?" Now here's the thing, Rowth has "rules" that Brin needs to follow. And his "rules" are a bit over the top. When we read them, you will start to roll your eyes and laugh too. I really enjoyed this book and cant wait to find out what happens to the rest of the girls.
Spelling and grammar flubs abound. There were Autocorrect problems. Several places the character, Rog's name was changed to Rob. Tense changes mid sentence. Plot mistakes as well. I.e. She does something, then during the same paragraph she thinks about doing the same action as if she hasn't just done that very thing and decides it's not worth it she'll just suffer without it. Very confusing. Phrasing is odd in places. I kept going back and rereading certain places to see why it didn't make sense. I just gave up after awhile.
I never finished this book. I had just started the epilogue and decided I just didn't care anymore.
The bdsm scenes in this book were hot and the Rog character was super interesting and funny. Very imaginative. I kept reading for these alone. Otherwise I would have given one star. The plot had lots of potential, but the planet and society were so much like earth that it could have been the same planet.
Ehhh, it was an okay read. Mostly about her being stubborn and him domineering. Didn't see much getting to know each other, they were for most of the book at odds. Supposedly really hot for her but at the beginning when he met all of the females, he got hot for all of them and fantasized about them. So it didn't seem to me he had a preference at all, just picked the female he thought would be most useful to him and several times thought of his previous lovers and going to them meanwhile she learns to obey. she was portrayed very much as a spoiled brat, with just a little sense. A barely okay read
I regret giving such a low rating, especially due to the fact that the writing was fairly well done and I was intrigued by the plot very quickly. However the thought provoking premise quickly degenerated into a book not about BDSM or anything close, but about rape. The heroine was against her will, kept naked, tortured and forced into various sex acts. There was nothing consensual about this story. The fact that the heroine "enjoyed" it, does not negate the definition of rape or assault. I'll not be reading any more of the series.
I read the third book in this series a little while ago and enjoyed it quite a bit. So even though I knew each book was by a different author, I wanted to check out the rest of the series. When the first two books went on sale, I jumped at the chance to get them. Sadly, this one wasn't worth the wait.
I would like to say that this was well written...but terribly edited. I mean, terribly edited. Missing words, wrong words, extra words, and even names spelled wrong. Usually I can overlook that if it's infrequent enough, but it wasn't here. Then there are the characters. At first I thought I liked Rowth. But the more we got of him, the more I became conflicted because I just did not like the way he treated Brinley like a three year old. So it still baffles me how this chick fell in love with the guy. Maybe Stockholm syndrome. I don't know. I still can't figure it out after finishing the book.
So Brinley was on board a spaceship heading to a new planet in order to work on terraforming it for colonization when the ship hit debris and crashed into an already inhabited planet. Only her and a few other females survived the crashed, but Brinley was in BAD shape. They practically had to rebuild her legs. Rowth is the attorney assigned to their case, and of course they're guilty of whatever charges against them because how could they not be. Okay. Okay. The crash did kill a lot of people and injure a ton too, but that was hardly their fault. When comes down to what to do with the women, only Rowth has an idea. One that's hardly easily accepted, but he eventually convinces the people in charge to go with it. His idea? Foster them out like children.
Obviously he takes Brinley in. I was always so annoyed or frustrated with Brinley because instead of talking to him like an adult, she always acted like a goddamn child. Of course he'll treat you like one! Rowth is big on obedience and thrives on punishments, that to me, sound awful rapey. And I swear, all these two do is fight.
Rowth's other foster "child" is a weird looking alien named Rog. Oh my gawd, I loved Rog. He really saved the story for me because he was just damn funny. Unfortunately, Rog is sick and dying. When he takes a turn for the worst is when the story actually starts becoming something and Brindley doing more than pouting and spitting insults. It was so nice to see her and Rowth actually TALKING LIKE ADULTS and working together.
Once they figure out what to do and get it done, it's time for Rowth to take Brinley down to his cellar for her punishment. After which it's all happily ever after for everybody. I don't know. The ending was so abrupt and I'm still trying to figure out how Brinley fell for the Rowth. No relationship in the history of ever should be like theirs is.
A SOLID 2.5 STARS! Reading this made me feel like an inadequate child. LOL.
THIS WAS TOO FOCUSED ON THE KINK, WHERE WAS THE EMOTIONAL OR RELATIONSHIP BUILDING WORTH MENTIONING? Here's one of the examples why I usually steer clear of the BDSM genre because most of it is just the whole dom-sub shit going on. Usually it's not so bad but, Binding Brinley lacked feelings. All I see is the male lead treating the heroine like a child, always with the spankings and discipline, it's quite frustrating to read.
BRINLEY is a 26 year old Bio-Engineer whose spaceship malfunctioned along with her crew and while she had saved their lives, she was left to die, only to crash and burn on an alien planet where they captured her for interrogation. Of course, prior to that, she was in the hospital for severe burns, broken bones and basically she was a mass of bleeding wounds. For his selfish reason, the male lead wanted to use her to heal his foster child, an alien called Rog who was rather cute in a kiddish way, even though it was older than both Brinley and Rowth combined. The story started off interesting but when it became overly saturated with Rowth often disciplining Brinley for every action she did, it became annoying. I felt frustrated for her. She was treated like a kid who couldn't think and walk on her own. Where was the gender equality...or sentient rights for any being? Did Brinley truly submit to Rowth's dominant? She was fighting him real hard most of the time, and the way he handled her made it hard for her to submit beautifully to him.
ROWTH is a powerful Magistrate Judge who volunteers himself to care for Brinley with the intention to have her save Rog's life. While I enjoy the austere, stick up his ass character because they are usually so much fun to watch as they fall in love, Rowth was a bit too rigid to the point where he wouldn't bend as much as I'd like. There was no gushy scenes that made me sigh, he was 95% the disciplinarian most of the time, it's almost boring. Yes, he does feel, it's just if only the author made him soften up at times when HE SHOULD, then it would have made the story better. Give and take, ya know? If Rowth ever gave Brinley the semblance of THINKING and TALKING rights, instead of treating her like an invalid fuck hole...this wouldn't have grated on my nerves so much.
OVERALL this wasn't a very good example of spectacular BDSM. The sub-dom relationship itself was imbalanced, the characters especially Rowth was too rigid and what was the whole point of the plot? The ending left me feeling like I ran into a brick wall. Too abrupt and the plot poorly paced. Towards the end, only did Rowth admit that he took Brinley for one purpose initially. She decided okay, I'll try to save Rog in the last chapter, and then BAM came the EPILOGUE. WTF?!
10 STARS for the comedy!!! 1 for no romance and beating an invalid!!!
I've read 29% of this book and I can't read for laughing. Brinley and Rowth are a match made in comedic hell. If I could I'd give this novel 10 stars because I literally rolled in the floor whenever Brinley's attitude was in full swing. I can only imagine what's going to happen when he tries to discipline her. I know it's not going to work out well at all. Finished reading, and now that I've explained what I liked, lets get to the bad parts. Seriously, who disciplines a woman that can't walk and is in constant pain? I lost my love for Rowth's character there, and I didn't get it back. There truly was no real emotions other than lust between the characters. Most of the time, Brinley didn't understand why she was feeling turned on and Idk either. Rowth didn't care for her nowhere near as much as he does Rog, and it doesn't change in the end. She just gets collared as his submissive after saving Rog's life. No I love you, Brinley, mate me, just I want to see you cry as I beat you. And the poor thing got plenty beatings, but I appreciated her spunk greatly. I had high hopes for this series after I started out of order with book 3. Renee's book was a great read that flowed, keeping to every aspect of the women's predicament. Not once did she forget about her friends. But I can see how Brinley forgot. Rowth was as about as sadistic as a foster parent could get, and then some. P.S. I read the blurb for the last book in this series where the hero's will be looking for a cure to Rog's illness. I thought it had been found in this book.
Potential to be good story but is mainly non-consensual disciplinary scenes and intimate scenes - not sure if I will continue series
This PNR contains subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some including adult language, steamy intimate scenes and violence such as non-consensual acts up to what I would consider rape, dominance w/ forced submission, etc.
I am not sure what to say about this story. I can’t say that it ends in a HEA or even a HFN, and it doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, but the ending is quite strange and is missing so much information that when the epilogue began, I fully expected another chapter or the next book in the series to feature the same characters.
There are a quite a few points that are not concluded, discussed, or contained to wrap up the story. I can’t list them here, or I would provide spoilers. Needless to say, I am not sure I want to continue the series, which I just discovered.
I rated this 3 stars since I was excited to read the story after I began it, and every time I took a break I wanted to start it again. I felt engaged with the plot, even though the amount of discipline is so far out of there, beyond any other story read that I can remember.
If someone loves a lot of disciplinary and intimate (non-consensual punishment / pleasure) scenes, and is unconcerned if the plot is fulfilled, or that they may have some questions at the end, then they will enjoy this one. As I felt like that was mainly what this story was about.
DNF. Im a huge fan of books with well written BDSM and kink elements, I love enemies to lovers, or held captive/kidnapped/forced marriage storylines, so this should have had all the elements to make it an enjoyable read for me. Unfortunately it was more abuse (and plenty of it in the 57% I did get through) and rapey than anything else. The H is thoroughly unlikeable. The h is still recovering from serious injuries and he’s beating her with a hairbrush, the second “punishment” of their first day at his house. She had no attraction to him, and between beatings, which he relished, he fantasised about making her cry and wanting to hurt her. It was actually really hard to read. I just found his sadism sickening. MaYbe if I’d kept reading some actual chemistry might have developed between them, but as it was, there was zero of anything except a giant man wanting to constantly beat and hurt a tiny woman. So, I can live without knowing whether anything better happened after 57%

I have such mixed feelings about this book. It felt as though it took forever for anything to happen - sexy times, action/adventure times, and whatever else. It wasn't exactly slow going, it just seemed that Ms. Smith was dragging parts out that didn't need to be. And then when you get to the interesting parts, of course closer to the end, it's like wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am-done. When I was sitting there reading thinking "finally something interesting", basically five pages later (okay that may be an exaggeration) the book ends! I was a bit peeved about that, but it was still a decent erotica novel.
Ohhh, speaking of erotica...the sexy times in Binding Brinley are definitely BDSM and pretty stinkin' hot. So, that's a plus. There is some good plot development going on in this book before it all comes to an abrupt end, it's not just hot sexy times.
I am not fond of alien stories but decided to chance this because I generally like Maren Smith’s writing however this book did not live up to my expectations. It took a long time for the characters to become interesting after the initial crashing scenario. There were quite a few silly mistakes in spelling which caused strange words to be entered, words that spell check would miss because they were actual words and it was easy to tell for the most part what she actually meant to write. One entire paragraph was repeated and I can’t see how that was missed by an editor. Unfortunately these things irritated so I was never fully invested in the book. I did come to love Rog and Brinley’s search for a cure for him and the ending is satisfying. If you don’t like a lot of spankings and some mild BDSM elements you should not buy this book.
There was a lot going on in this book. There was a seemingly unending battle of wills between Rowth and Brinley.
The situation with Rowth ultimately needing Brinley's help seemed like more of an afterthought to me instead of part of Rowth's master plan.
I did like Rog, including the snarky back and forth between Rog and Rowth. Brinley, in her constant defiance was exhausting. She obviously never heard of catching more flies with honey than with vinegar.
I am not a big paranormal romance reader, but I did enjoy this book, along with the rest of the series. I started at book 3 and read backwards. I don't feel like I missed anything by reading out of order.
I am drawn to this series and I can't figure out which part pulls me more. I love the survival story aspects, because who doesn't love the underdog? The Prak ir society with its strict adherence to conformity while still remaining "humane" is a fascinating concept that I loved too. The D/s spanking normality was a common thread from the previous series books that I have read so far, but this one felt darker. I liked this one a lot for many different reasons, I would have loved it if it were just a little bit not as dark and commanding, but that is just me. The book is well written and was emotionally appealing.
Brinley wakes up on the wrong side of the cryopod, only to have life take one frustrating turn after another. If not for Rog she might give up hope.
Growth not only knows the system that governs his world he plays a significant enough role in it to know he's going to have to talk fast and think creatively if he's going to help these humans survive... as for why he wants them to survive? Well... there's no one reason?
The humor and attitude in this story keep the pages turning, and have me curious to read about the rest of Brinley's crew.
Okay, so here's the thing: this book doesn't play with the concept of consent as it does completely obliterate it. There's a whole hell of a lot of skeeviness that goes on here when it comes to relationships that made me uncomfortable the entire fucking way through, even though Smith tried to mitigate it a little at the end. In short, there's no way this can be read as consensual because there's no way for the heroine to give consent.
Way, way darker than I was expecting and not at all pleasant.

Brinley crash lands on Rowth's planet and nearly dies. He takes her into his custody and punishes her into submission. He's sadistic and cold. She's confused because she kind of likes it but it seems like what she really wants is his attention or affection. I like my relationships to contain more love or affection. Sadism is fine if there is also genuine concern for her welfare and feelings. I didn't feel that from Rowth. There was some hot action but no satisfying emotional connection.
Pra'kir is a planet with a justice system unlike anything I've read about before. I started with book 3 enjoyed it and searched out book 1. Rowth is the General Magistrate. Brinley is the alien scientist who had the bad luck to crash land on his planet. Having the girl from Earth cast as the alien puts a new perception on everything. The sexual tension is high. Spankings and submission are a well fought battle. Love this series. Off to buy book 2.
Crash landing on a planet where you are classed as a child and that has strict social rules makes life very interesting for Brinley...especially once her Master begins to train her. Fighting and punishing becomes the norm, but when she realizes that she enjoys it... A hot BDSM read with a few triggers in amongst it, definitely read with caution...but enjoy too!!!
Nonconsensual punishment is abuse on any world. Her sudden attitude change wasn't believable or adequately explained. And for heaven's sake, GET AN EDITOR! There were too many typos and missing words, and this author needs some serious instruction to fix the mishmash of conflicting tenses throughout.
I read book #3 of this series first and loved it. I suggest you skip this one and read that instead.
This is the worst book in this genre I've ever read
There was no story that I could tell. Just punishments by a guy who just seemed like a big asshat. I tried and tried to get through this book but I couldn't do it. So maybe the last 25% of the book pulled it all together but I highly doubt it.
Enjoyed the dynamics between the two characters as they learned they were more similar than different. No matter what planet or alien life form you've gotta love the alpha male.
I'd recommend this book to those who like the dynamics of master and slave with a bit of science fiction.
3.5 stars. An erotic telling of how several young women are the only survivors of a downed spacecraft that crashed onto an unaware planet, killing some of it's citizens. Brinley is the most injured and ends up fostered out to the Chief Magistrate, who believes in corporal punishment. She fights him all the way.
I hated the hero. Literally he was a horrible character. The book had so much potential but I could not tolerate the rape. I love a good BDSM novel but this book crossed the line. I'll give this author another chance because I liked her writing style. I hope rape isn't a theme in all of her stories.
Brinley's spaceship has crash landed on the planet of Pra'kir and found herself adopted by the very powerful General Magistrate Rowth Lashat. His "parentage " is educational and nurturing, her well-being paramount...just not in the way one might expect from an adoptive parent. I recommend this book and look forward to the series. Bring it.
A good story, but I would have liked a better ending. It just wasn't the right one for me after reading the book. I thought there should have been more events happening or happened to get to the point. I would have like there to have been more about the cure for Rog. It was just done, nothing about what took place to get there. I was disappointed at the end.
Good but with a confusing approach to the opening of the book (and series); and too much description of characters and setting without the context to make sense of it for the remainder of the series. The author does well growing the affection between Brindley and the magistrate, if it’s a bit light on external conflict.
