Tom Gates absolutely loves this band Dude3, which is having a t-shirt design contests. Of course, Tom is determined to win, he comes up with an amazing design he is finally satisfied with. But, Tom realizes he forgot to send his design in! So, Tom is beside himself, he cannot even live with himself he is so upset. Then, Tom receives a letter from weekly magazine saying he won the contests, turns out Toms sister wasn't as bad as he thought!
Tom Gates is Absolutely Fantastic [at Some Things], is about adventure, determination and desperation.

'Tom Gates is Absolutely Fantastic' follows our lively and young protagonist Tom. This time the novel centres mostly around his school excursion or "School Activity Trip" which, because he is so forgetful, our dear Tom almost misses out on. It was a nice little novel that I laughed at many times. Some of the most annoying characters return in this novel such as the despicable and arrogant Marcus and the face-pulling new girl-next-door. Delia surprises Tom in this novel as she does him a great big favour which enables him to succeed in a competition which really surprises out main lead. Highly recommended for middle-grade and children audience.
Congratulations to Liz Pichon! Well done!

Starý dobrý Tom Gates, mám síce pocit, že trochu poľavil v tejto knihe. Ale vôbec nevadí, lebo je taký pojašený a šialený, že sa už neviem dočkať ďalšieho dielu!!! :) :) :)

I know for loads of kids this is awesome, but the journal writing style is something I struggle with, with all the changing lettering etc. Good though, I swear Tom has ADHD.

Read- August 2019 for The N.E.W.Ts (My A in Potions)
- So far, this is my favourite book in the series. It follows Tom on his school trip and it really reminded me of my own school trip in Year 5 to Alton Castle (no, not Alton Towers that is a completely different thing). That's the reason why I enjoy this books so much, because it reminds me of my own time at Primary School.

With random thoughts in the ridiculousness of every day adventure, this is a fun tale with tons of illustrations and zest.

Tom forgot to get his form filled out for the three day school trip, but with everything going on in his life, that isn't surprising. His sister, Delia, is a pain, his grandparents sweet but odd, and his own parents...well, let's not even go there. The daily school drama doesn't help things either. But after a lot of effort and even more forgetting, he finally gets his form in and snags a spot thanks to a cancellation. But once the bus is underway, he's in for anything but a boring adventure.

While a few nice messages are wrapped up in this tale, the book centers around one thing—silly fun. Tom is pretty normal for his age, and his mind wanders everywhere but in the responsible direction. He's a nice guy and simply tries to get through the chaos called life as best he can, which makes him easy to relate to. The situations he runs into come from daily life and reflect those which average kids will face. And while all of it seems dramatic at times, it's Tom's very honest, uncensored thoughts, which make it a hilarious read.

This is not a fast-paced book into adventure, but rather humor with spice. It takes a heavy several chapters before Tom's trip gets underway but anticipation is always half the fun. The author brings even the smallest things into a new light thanks to Tom, one that ensures giggles and chuckles. After all, many kids have the exact same thoughts even if they don't say it.

Of course, the heaps and mounds of small and large doodles and illustrations are probably the key factor in these pages. Not a sentence goes by without a funny, scribbled edition...one that adds snorts and giggles along the way. The book might seem thick, but it's perfect for reluctant readers who aren't thrilled by seas of words. The story is there, and it is funny, but without these doodles, it wouldn't be anything exceptionally special.

I recommend this book to especially middle grade boys who love a little fun because they will definitely find it here.

I won a complimentary copy through Library Thing and found this book so fitting for the intended audience that I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.

This is such a fun and engaging story with characters that every kid can relate to.

Tom Gates is your average kid doing kid things-just some things he does better than others. He doesn’t like getting up early for school, he can’t seem to remember his permission slips, but he’s great at art and writing stories. But that permission slip? It’s really important and he’s going to need to remember it if he’s going on the class trip. Luckily for Tom, his parents are in the loop and keep him from being the only one in class who doesn’t get to go. And he wouldn’t want to miss this one-his class trip is full of raft making, midnight snacks, rock climbing and fifth grade shenanigans.

This book is loaded with doodles, drawings, funny monsters, and other craziness. At the beginning, we’re told to watch for the extra monsters that are hidden throughout the story. It completely sucked in The Kid-even though it isn’t a colorful graphic novel-and he read the whole book in one sitting. I really liked how it wasn’t mean-spirited or mouthy. The kids are totally relatable and the storyline was very funny.

The drawings and doodles are such a fun addition to the story and really kept my son interested in the story. Tom is like so many other tween boys that I know and his struggles with school and organization were hilarious. If you have a younger reader who is just starting out with chapter books or a reluctant reader, this would be a great option.

Thank you to Candlewick Press for the copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

This is a cool book to read in the corona virus break. I prefer Tom Gates books to Roald Dahl or Enid Blyton because although it has 250 pages it's got pictures and doodles to look at and the sentences in the pages are short and easy to read and understand. It's a great read for 8 year old boys like me.

This story is about Tom Gates who is a 10 year old boy. He lives with his parents on Castle Road and goes to Oakfield School which is next to his house. He has an annoying big sister who goes to college.

In this book, Tom Gates goes on a field trip with his classmates to Activity Centre. At first misses home a bit, but soon he is happy to be with his friends. They go on raft races, have fun midnight feasts and play together. One day, Brad, one of Tom's friends, made a pretend snake out of socks. Then Marcus the bully burst a packet of popcorn and the room was in a giant mess. Tom and his friends get into lots of trouble for messing up their room, and not following rules. But in the end they learned their lessons and become very well-behaved.

While reading this book I felt that I was one of Tom's friend and I was right there with them on their activity trip! The author did a great job of being very believable!

This is the 8th book I've read in this series and will no doubt finish all the rest.

The adventures and laughs continue in this fifth diary in the Tom Gates series. Remembering things has never been Tom’s strong suit and once again, his forgetfulness is bringing all kinds of commotion and frustration into his life. An “accidentally” forgotten permission slip for the school activity trip to Tidy Camp means that Tom won’t be tagging along with his classmates doing all those fun things like swimming, kayaking, and building cool stuff unless he can find a way to get his name on that list before they leave, and as Marcus points out, “They’re all booked up now. Bad luck.” How is he going to pull this one off? Mom and Dad are too busy trying to figure out why Delia won’t tell them where her new job is at and even worse, Delia is threatening to paint Tom’s room a horrid colour if he actually does go to camp. How is he going to pull this one off?!

Filled with Tom’s usual “funtastic” doodles of monsters, aliens, friends, and family his newest dilemma is sure to entertain readers right from the first doodle filled page!

Liz Pichon has written and doodled her way to another engaging Tom Gates success!

"Tom Gates is Absolutely Fantastic (At Some Things)" by Liz Pichon is an absolute delight! As a fan of Tom's quirky adventures, I found this installment to be both hilarious and heartwarming. Pichon’s unique blend of humor and relatable storytelling shines through, making it easy for readers of all ages to connect with Tom's experiences.

The illustrations are vibrant and add an extra layer of fun to the narrative. I especially loved the way Tom navigates the ups and downs of school life, friendships, and family—topics that resonate with so many of us.

This book has brought a smile to my face and a few good chuckles. If you’re looking for a lighthearted and entertaining read that celebrates the joys of being a kid, I can't recommend this one enough! Thank you, Liz Pichon, for another wonderful adventure with Tom Gates!

I received this from Penguin and LibraryThing Early Reviewers group. I had previously read the first book in this series. Engaging illustrations accentuate a humorous story about a young, forgetful, but imaginative young boy. There was a lot more "substance" to this addition to the Tom Gates story. Our kids love these books. The author is English. Hence, "scoffing" is similar to our "scarfing" food. This is a great book for a reluctant reader or a reader trying to cross from graphic novels to more "wordy" books.

Tom Gates loves to draw! Tom Gates is excited to be going on a school activity trip! Tom Gates is very forgetful. He forgets to enter his T-Shirt drawing in a contest (good thing his difficult sister has his back and sends it in). He forgets to turn in permission slip for the trip (good thing his teachers and parents are forgiving).

Tom Gates is Absolutely Fantastic (at Some Things) is full of laugh-out-loud humor, expressive illustrations, and good old-fashioned fun reading. Kids, especially fans of Wimpy Kid will love this #5 book in the Tom Gates series.
