This note regards Alexandre Dumas, père, the father of Alexandre Dumas, fils (son). For the son, see Alexandre Dumas fils.

Alexandre Dumas père, born Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, was a towering figure of 19th-century French literature whose historical novels and adventure tales earned global renown. Best known for The Three Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo, and other swashbuckling epics, Dumas crafted stories filled with daring heroes, dramatic twists, and vivid historical backdrops. His works, often serialized and immensely popular with the public, helped shape the modern adventure genre and remain enduring staples of world literature.
Dumas was the son of Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, a celebrated general in Revolutionary France and the highest-ranking man of African descent in a European army at the time. His father’s early death left the family in poverty, but Dumas’s upbringing was nonetheless marked by strong personal ambition and a deep admiration for his father’s achievements. He moved to Paris as a young man and began his literary career writing for the theatre, quickly rising to prominence in the Romantic movement with successful plays like Henri III et sa cour and Antony.
In the 1840s, Dumas turned increasingly toward prose fiction, particularly serialized novels, which reached vast audiences through French newspapers. His collaboration with Auguste Maquet, a skilled plotter and historian, proved fruitful. While Maquet drafted outlines and conducted research, Dumas infused the narratives with flair, dialogue, and color. The result was a string of literary triumphs, including The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, both published in 1844. These novels exemplified Dumas’s flair for suspenseful pacing, memorable characters, and grand themes of justice, loyalty, and revenge.
The D’Artagnan Romances—The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Vicomte of Bragelonne—cemented his fame. They follow the adventures of the titular Gascon hero and his comrades Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, blending historical fact and fiction into richly imagined narratives. The Count of Monte Cristo offered a darker, more introspective tale of betrayal and retribution, with intricate plotting and a deeply philosophical core.
Dumas was also active in journalism and theater. He founded the Théâtre Historique in Paris, which staged dramatizations of his own novels. A prolific and energetic writer, he is estimated to have written or co-written over 100,000 pages of fiction, plays, memoirs, travel books, and essays. He also had a strong interest in food and published a massive culinary encyclopedia, Le Grand Dictionnaire de cuisine, filled with recipes, anecdotes, and reflections on gastronomy.
Despite his enormous success, Dumas was frequently plagued by financial troubles. He led a lavish lifestyle, building the ornate Château de Monte-Cristo near Paris, employing large staffs, and supporting many friends and relatives. His generosity and appetite for life often outpaced his income, leading to mounting debts. Still, his creative drive rarely waned.
Dumas’s mixed-race background was a source of both pride and tension in his life. He was outspoken about his heritage and used his platform to address race and injustice. In his novel Georges, he explored issues of colonialism and identity through a Creole protagonist. Though he encountered racism, he refused to be silenced, famously replying to a racial insult by pointing to his ancestry and achievements with dignity and wit.
Later in life, Dumas continued writing and traveling, spending time in Belgium, Italy, and Russia. He supported nationalist causes, particularly Italian unification, and even founded a newspaper to advocate for Giuseppe Garibaldi. Though his popularity waned somewhat in his final years, his literary legacy grew steadily. He wrote in a style that was accessible, entertaining, and emotionally reso

Classic for good reason...

There are tales which are timeless; and although the manners and values of mainstream society seem to deteriorate, true men still hold the bonds of friendship and the grace of chivalry sacred. For such men, books like these were written.

What great adventures of intrigue, valour, duty, friendship at the backdrop of the most illustrious historical events in France in 17th century. Duma’s humour is sublime and heroes characters remain true throughout this epic gallop across 35 years of adventure and history. Classic for a reason.

Обожаю! Обожаю классику, обожаю Дюма, обожаю приключения мушкетёров и те самые времена, когда «один за всех, а все за одного!». Заключительная из книг о мушкетёров очень трогает именно прощанием с его главными героями.

Despite occasional slow-going, this book finishes strong; sad, moving, and powerful.

I love all these books. Listened to the Three Musketeers again while driving back and forth to Colorado over the past two weeks. Still as good as I remember.

not quite as good as the count of Monte Cristo, but swashbuckling and hellraising galore. Not a romantic ending--at least one too many deaths.

Usually, the misogyny and racism, classism and white-man-supremecy of the narratives of that Era is worth reading for the nobility and values of those men ("gentlemen").
I found no such values in the reckless, disrespectful, flaky, and value-less men who are the heroes of this narrative.
An advise to all who loved the movies- don't spoil the experience by reading this lol.
And THAT saying something, as it's notoriously known that books are most often better then the films.
I am not sure why this book is to be read. I was greatly disappointed.

I used to cherish the movies based on Alexandre Dumas' novels, and finally got the chance to read them. "The Three Musketeers" primarily focuses on the adventures of a noble young man from Gascony, D'Artagnan. D'Artagnan comes from a poor background, but his father has managed to get him an interview with a Monsieur de Treville, captain of the King's Musketeers. Along the way, he gets robbed and beaten up, but still manages to meet Treville and get appointed to the Guard, free of charge.
However, after gaining admission, he sees his robbers passing by, and dashes to exact his revenge, along the way, accidentally insulting 3 other musketeers, Athos, Porthos and Aramis. Each feeling that their honor has been compromised, they challenge D'Artagnan to a duel. However, they are all threatened with arrest by the infamous Cardinal's Guard, as there is a law against dueling. D'Artagnan momentarily joins forces with the other musketeers, and they drive the cardinal's guard away. Almost immediately, D'Artagnan befriends the other musketeers, and they encounter numerous other adventures and action-packed events working for the King's Musketeer Guard.

Fantastic stories we seem to know from movies, but the book is far richer. The stories are woven with characters and loyalties. They will make you laugh and make you tear. The book is long because it is full of life. This is a classic because its message is eternal. I hope you will enjoy reading it.

I look forward to finding other works by this author. The adventures of the characters blend with the history of it's time. Fantastic read.

As the years have gone on, Dumas has been a mission of mine to work through. The D’Artagnan Romances were a true joy and pleasure to read.

Dumas wrote prolifically about the French Royal Family from the 1400’s to the 1800’s. Predominantly using the same format as we have here. Yet, there is something about these works that everything just fits and in time, if you read a lot more of Dumas, you can see why.

I started this series years ago and lost interest around The Vicomte of Bragelonne. I've always planned to finish. So I went back to the beginning and read the entire trilogy. It took forever! But that is crossed off my list now. And I can finally watch The Man in the Iron Mask. I've put off watching the movie until I read the book. I'm hoping it is a little more action packed than the book was.

Good story and character development. Just as in Count of Monte Cristo do not take time off while reading as the story can be tough to pick back up and jump back in. Just the beginning of the Three Musketeer Collection.

Great. The first book is fantastic, exciting and fun. I liked the rest of them, there was one I didn't enjoy as much and was a bit of a slog to get through. I read these a while ago so I can't remember which one it was sorry! But yeah, I had a good time, I'd say give the whole series a go.
