Denise Reynolds is used to putting up a good front to show the world a strong, capable woman, but keeps a lot of things buried deep.
Chris Nolton is everything she learned the hard way to avoid — a sexy alpha-male who could charm her out of her pants and work his way into her heart. If history has taught her anything, it’s a deadly combination, but he manages to dig up emotions and longing she’s tried to bury for years.
He says all the right things and pushes her boundaries in all the right ways. Letting her guard down is difficult, especially since believing all the right things in the past led to unimaginable consequences.
Being content with her life may no longer be an option, but risking her heart may bring her to her knees.
Author's Note: Half-Broke Heart picks up in the middle of Stitched Up Heart (Combat Hearts, #1) and is not intended to be read as a standalone.
I really enjoyed this book. I love the writing style and the characters. Great read but there is just one imperfection. It is too short and I thought they would get their HEA here but nooooo the wonderful Tarina gives them a full-length novel. Don’t get me wrong I can’t wait but this novella here left me wanting more.
It has to be hard to write a series book that takes place largely over the same time period as the prior book. There was simply too much repetition for me.
While I liked Chris and Denise, she was too guarded for me to get into them as a couple and they just danced around each other the vast majority of the book. I found it frustrating. Much more time apart than together.
I had hope for more. This is a cliffy for their full book.
In the blurb is an “Author’s Note” about how Half-Broke Heart is not a stand-alone. I agree. After I got a few pages in, I actually went back to “Stitched Up” to review what I read a year ago. It’s absolutely worth reading in order.
We met Chris and Denise in the first book of the Combat Hearts Series (see my note above) and just knew there was more to them so I am so glad they are getting their story told. Half-Broke Hearts is a novella labelled as book 2.5 in the series which should have told me that it was a set up to a much greater story but I was so psyched to get into it, that I didn’t sit and ponder where it would lead.
Half-Broke Heart is quick and to the point, few words are wasted on details and can be read in a spare hour. I’m looking forward to reading the next story in this fantastic series.
I borrowed Half-Broken Heart from the Kindle Unlimited Program.
Denise and Chris met at the end of book 1 in the Combat Hearts Series and in this in-between story it tells of the push and resistance between the two as they start a relationship and he is pulled away suddenly with not contact to tell Denise where he is going in an undercover assignment for the FBI.
Denise is dealing with her cousin's (raised as her sister) cancer and her two kids, Bree being stabbed and ending up in intensive care and Chris's disappearance with no contact. It leaves the reader up in the air but as I have read the books out of order, I know what happens next and this isn't a real cliff-hanger but an between story to tie the books together.
No! That's not how you end a book! Well, I mean... you can. It's called a cliffhanger. But seriously!! You had my emotions all over the place and then you dropped me like a hot potato. Denise was starting to loosen up. Chris was getting to her. This was a great read. I can't wait for the rest of this story. These characters are so well thought out that I feel like I know them. The friendship between Bree and Denise is like what I have with my twin. They're relatable. I liked Bree and Jase's story but I think Denise and Chris's will tear me up. Which is what a fantastic author does.
I am absolutely loving this series. I am an avid reader and it really takes a lot to get me hooked to a series but this series has it all! This book is not a standalone book and should be read second. This book is the beginning of Denise and Chris's story. Both Chris and Denise both a a ton of baggage that stops them from having a normal relationship without walls. This book does end in a cliff hanger which normally I hate but this book has just made me want the next book more!
I wanted Denise and Chris's story immediately after finishing Stitched Up Heart. Something about the intensity that Chris had towards Denise led me to believe he'd be some kind of hero, one who is going to shake the very foundation of Back Off fortress she's built. I wasn't disappointed and am so totally in a mini book hang over.. From the amazing chemistry to the Sizzling yet humorous banter I was hooked. One very important element was the rescue shelter and the bond of the service dogs. This is something dear to my heart. The only downside was it is a cliffhanger. I'm needing the next one so bad. I HOPE YOU WRITE SUPER FAST LADY.
Half-Broke Heart (Combat Hearts #2.5) by Tarina Deaton had a powerhouse team of characters and I could not put this book down.
Now I will say that I have not read the other books in this series, but the story is so well written that I didn't need to. True I didn't have any background on Bree or Jase, but because they were not the main focus, it fit perfectly in with the short story theme. They intrigued me enough that I need to go back and read their story, but at the same time, it was vague enough where it doesn't ruin it.
Denise is a firecracker, tough as nails and down right badass. In truth, being in the military myself I connected with her on a different level. I got her, everything she was throwing, I got it. Being in the military isn't easy, being a woman in the military is down right frustrating. But I'm not going to bombard you with that. The only thing that I didn't like was that, there was one scene that went sideways for Chris. And I got where he was coming from, and I got where Denise was coming from. But, a part of me sided with Chris. I won't say anymore then that, because it will ruin this beauty. But you'll get it when you read this story.
Onto Chris, he's is your alpha male type. An ex-serviceman himself, turned FBI, he got all that making of a jerk character. But he was actually written more down to earth. And it worked. There is this scene at the start when he and Denise meat, and well, it gets really fun/sexy/funny as hell. I nearly died. Showing this part of his personally at the start really made Chris more then just the normal hot 2D male lead. I can't wait to read more about him in book 3.
In saying that, read this before book 3, it's a setup more then a random story between books. (I got a sneak peek of book 3, and... I need to get my hands on book 3) This is their history, their introduction, and this an insight into why they are, the way that they are. I will go as far to say that this is a must read. Even if in ends in a cliffhanger and, pretty much rips outs your heart strings one by one, (I'm going a day to recover).
Take my high recommendation that you will be entranced with this short story. It may be short but it managed to feel like a full novel, while leading you down the path for more.
Broke Heart, Combat Hearts Book 1.5 by Tarina Deaton, Narration by Hayden Bishop
I purchased this book.
I will say if you haven’t read book one you probably need too. I think you can read this book without reading book one but Denise is hella funny and you don’t want to miss her comedy. I mean I had a bit of a girl crush on her TBH so this book and book made my heart happy. I want to start by saying Hayden’s narration is *Chef’s kiss* amazing. She does an amazing job with telling the story. She is easily becoming a favorite voice for me. Ok so we see Denise and Chris in book 1 but had no clue what was going on between the two of them under Bree and Jase’s noses. Granted Bree was being stalked but still…. Denise and Chris are hella funny together. They both had some issues, but Chris is ready for a woman too settle down with. He didn’t realize it until he sees Jase with Bree and until a certain female is giving him the slip. Karma play boy!!! Denise is frightened outta her mind with these feelings she is having for Chris. No one gets her and he does, everyone pushes her and he doesn’t. No one gives her comfort like Bree and yet she is leaning into his touch. FREAK OUT CITY!!! Right when we think they are going to have a HEA we quickly realize there is a reason for book 2….OOOF Chris you are in big trouble but hopefully Denise wont be toooooo mad??? Oh dude you’re screwed because yeah she is going to lose it on you.
Half-Broke Heart (Combat Hearts #1.5) by Tarina Deaton
5 Stars
Oh my goodness, I loved this story so so so much. I did mess up though and read this before I read Stitched Up Heart, the first in the series. Although saying that I can say that yes, I need to read the first before I read the next one, but I was never lost in this story. This is the start to Denise and Chris’s story and at the beginning I did feel like I was missing something because it felt like it started in the middle of a story, well DUH, it did LOL.
I loved everything about this book, it read so easily, the words flowing perfectly and I just about threw my kindle when it ended. The storyline was amazing and the character build was spot on, and happened at the right time throughout. I loved the friendship interaction between Denise and Bree, and also the bond Denise has with Sprocket...There is just not one thing I didn't love about this book!!!
The sneak peek at the end had me again almost throwing my kindle because I wanted it to go on and go ahead and give me the whole book.
This is my first by Tarina Deaton, and will absolutely positively not be my last! I have to end this now because Book 1 is calling my name and I can't wait to finish that so I can move on to Book 2.
Many thanks to Miss Deaton for a beautifully written story, and a new series that I can already say I will be rereading in the future. I recommend this book highly, but don't do as I did, Grab the first in the series and start there, I haven't even read it yet and know that I'm going to love it!!!
Half-Broke Heart (Combat Hearts #1.5) by Tarina Deaton is the second book in her Combat Hearts series. I highly suggest that you read the first book before this one as it meshes together with the first. I enjoyed this book as much as the first one. Her characters are so true to life and the emotional roller coaster they took me on made me laugh, cry and feel compassion. This story picks up in the middle of the first book with Denise and Chris. This is Denise's story. Denise and Chris are best friends with Brew and Jase. You can feel the attraction between them but Denise is reluctant to let Chris in because of a past, bad relationship. He is everything that could bring her down and she would rather keep things buried. What will happen when she decides to give him a chance? Will she finally let him in with the help of her PTSD dog? He says and does all the right things but will she regret her choice? Their story as a couple of twists and turns that will leave you sitting on the edge of your seat just waiting to see what will happen. Is there more to risk then just her heart? I enjoyed these two together and seeing Denise's side of things. They have such chemistry and attraction that they just belong together. They are both strong characters, they have been through so much. PTSD is not an easy thing and I think this author has depicted those feelings really well. I highly recommend this book, find out what Denise's story is and if there is a happy ending for her!
Half-Broke Heart is a superb novella in the Combat Hearts Series (book #1.5), by Tarina Deaton. I LOVED Stitched Up Heart (Book #1) and am so happy to get to know Denise, and of course hunky Chris, sooooo much better. As this books storyline overlaps with the first book, I really recommend that you read Book One before starting on this. It will give you a better perspective, a lot of back story and character information, which will add to your reading experience of this book. I must say that I did have quite a lot of expectation for this book, especially after loving the first one sooooo much. I am incredibly thrilled to say that Ms. Deaton didn’t let me down, it was every bit as good as I hoped it would be. Ms. Deaton certainly knows how to hold you in a story…the book really was incredibly good. But, that ending??? OMG- I need to have the next book right now! I really, really neeeeed to know what happens. I love the friendships and camaraderie between the characters, that Ms. Deaton captures so beautifully in this story. It made me want to be a part of their ‘group’. The incredibly funny banter, quips and antics had me laughing out loud. There were also moments that had me gasping, others that had me choking up with emotion. This is definitely not a book you want to miss! I can’t wait to read Locked-Down Heart!
Half Broke Heart (Combat Hearts #1.5) By Tarina Deaton
This book covers PTSD. It was good to read about this topic from the life of a female, since we quite often only read about men suffering from this horrible affliction. Denise suffers from PTSD and we get a small amount of information on the cause of her PTSD and the issues this is now causing her. Half Broke Heart (Combat Hearts #1.5) is the second book in tis series. Since it’s a novella the story is short but well worth the read. Tarina has written this book so well the story just flows and as such she will pull you into the live of the characters (opinion). This book centres around Chris and Denise. When Chris and Denise first meet the lust/attraction was instant. Chris was everything Denise didn’t want in her life at this moment. The problem is Chris is saying all the right things and pushes her in the right direction, so how is she going to ignore this man? Does she want to risk her heart again? But for Chris he wanted Denise and was determined he was going to get her. How hard will Chris have to work to win Denise’s heart? Unlike me don’t start with this book read the first book Stitched Up Heart (Combat Series #1) first.
Half-Broke Heart ( Combat Hearts #1.5) By Tarina Deaton
Half-Broke Heart (Combat Hearts #1.5 ) by Tarina Deaton Is the second book in her Combat Hearts Series.I recommend that you read the first book in this series first,as both books go together. I had the hardest time putting this down once I started reading. I enjoyed this one as much as the first book. Get ready for a roller-coaster ride of emotions that had me laughing one minute and crying the next.I love how this story picks up in middle of the first book with Denise and Chris. This is the story about Denise and Chris.Chris and Denise are best friends with Bree and Jase Right off the bat you these two are super attracted to each other. But Denise is leary of letting Chris in because of her past bad relationship. Can Denise let her guard down and give Chris a shot? There are a few twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what happened next.I don't want to give to much away so I'll say this I highly, highly recommend this book as ypu won't be disappointed. I absolutely can't wait to get my hands on. The Third installment and see where this series takes.I look forward to reading more from this author.
Half-Broke Heart is a novella in the Combat Hearts series by Tarina Deaton. It fits in between Stitched up Heart and Locked Down Heart. I think it could probably be enjoyed without reading Stitched up Heart, but they do have overlapping story lines and characters. So for the full pleasure, I would recommend reading both. They are both amazing, and I fully expect Locked Down Heart to be as well. I love the author's writing, as the characters are relatable and well written. The situations they encounter are real life, and the relationships the characters have are amazingly written. Total 5 star book, and I highly recommend to everyone! Denise and Chris are both tough on the outside, and try to put up a front, but they are impossible not to love. Their best friends Bree and Jase (return from book 1) are hooking up, so they are thrown together, and despite their best efforts to keep it friendly, it turns into something more. But its not all cupcakes and rainbows, they each have their own drama, which creates tension and strain on themselves and each other. Its a rocky road, but I am rooting for them to work it out and get their happily ever after. You'll have to read the next book to find out. I cant wait!
Half-Broke Heart by Tarina Deaton is a beginning to Denise and Chris’ story and picks up in the middle of the first book in Tarina’s Combat Hearts series and for NO reason, I repeat, for NO reason should it be read as a standalone! Read it after finishing the first book as it is not necessary to have read the 2nd book (maybe it is just me thinking so …). I fell in love with Tarina’s writing the moment I picked up the first book in the series and I absolutely fell in love with everyone in it so when I saw that Half-Broke Heart is the story of Denise (Bree’s best friend) and Chris (Jase’s very good friend), I squealed with glee! Yey! I could just imagine them together though I could see a lot of challenges as well! Also, to let you know, this is just the beginning of their story and it will leave you hanging and reaching for the third book of the series! Anyhow, as I already said, this is the story of Denise Reynolds and Chris Nolton … Denise, so guarded and so funny and so deceptively strong and so broken at the same time … Chris, such an Alpha and carrying such a baggage … It was a great lead-in to their full story that is the third book of the series and I would recommend taking a weekend for their story! You will not regret it! Come along on the journey!
I just finished reading Half-Broke Heart (Combat Hearts book 1.5), by Tarina Deaton.
I’m so giddy right now!
I’m still riding the rollercoaster that Tarina Deaton created and I’m loving every second of it!
We got to know Denise and Chris a bit, in the first book of this series and I was crushing on them as well as Bree and Jase! Needless to say that it didn’t take me long to snoop for this book and keep going!
This book feels intertwined with the first one so I would recommend reading Stitched up Heart, first. You won’t regret it.
Denise is every bit a badass as she is a softie! And I love that about her. So does Chris.
And Chris? Let me tell you a bit about Chris.
A man of great charm, great conviction and a great deal of sex appeal.
He is everything that Denise doesn’t recognize she needs and then some!
I’m not a very patient person when it comes to my self indulgence (that would be my book obsession) and that usually makes me grumpy when a book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, haha.
This one doesn’t necessarily end on a cliffhanger but the ending certainly sets up for the next book in the series and let me tell you - I can’t wait to read it!
As a rule, I usually HATE cliffhangers, but for this book, I'll make an exception. That's because I recently finished book one and liked it so much, I already had every intention of reading every darned book in the series, and because I knew, going in, that this book was intended as a kind of "filler" in between books one and two. Plus... the rest of the series has already been published, so I can immediately purchase the next book and keep reading. I can climb right back up on that proverbial cliff whenever I'd like, so if there's any prolonged hanging to be had, it'll be of my own choosing.
There's a lot of repetition in this book. Whole scenes from book one are reproduced word-for-word in it, which may have only been so evident to me because of having recently completed the first book, but there's also new stuff, too, stuff that provides more insight into Denise's background. Just enough to make me want to go into her story in more depth in book three.
Just as the author planned...
What can I say? Smart author. Terrific series. Trust me, I'm not gonna be "hanging" for long.
I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE REST OF THE STORY!!! Half-Broke Heart by Tarina Deaton, is a story about the second couple from the first book. Best friends of the main characters from the first book, Denise and Chris meet and lust happens instantly. Denise comes from a messed up past that has her on edge about trusting someone again. Chris is determined to make Denise his. Denise fights it and fights it and eventually decides to give him a chance. There are a lot of issues that develop between the two and Denise’s past becomes in question. A lot of what takes place between the two ties into the first book. You don’t need to read the first book to understand their story, which was nice. Now…the sexy scenes between these two are ridiculously hot! You can totally feel the connection between the two. Their story is awesome and I seriously cannot wait to see what happens between them! Like all series, I suggest you start with the first book but again with this one it isn’t necessary. Oh! I love the dogs in this book!
Half-Broke Heart is a novella in the Combat Hearts series by Tarina Deaton, and it was another fantastic read in this great series. This story focuses on Denise Reynolds and Chris Nolton, this was a very explosive relationship. Chris is everything that Denise felt like she didn’t need in her life, alpha male who says and does everything way too smooth, and while he presents as this until we dig deeper to see the real man who is Chris was. This story line was unique because it took place at the same time as Rescued Heart and is the prequel to Locked-Down Heart, giving the reader a chance to see the backstory that lead to how Chris and Denise first met. I hadn’t really read anything by Deaton prior to this series, but I am so glad that I picked this series to start, her writing style is so unique and her way of telling a story made these all such a joy to get to read. I would suggest that this book be read in order of the series as the stories all work in concert together. This is a series that shouldn’t be missed!

“She wasn’t going to let him take an inch. He was going to have to fight for everything she gave him.”
It feels like it’s been a long time since I started book one of this series Stitched Up Heart. A few pages in and all the emotions I had reading book one creeped back into my soul leaving me greedy for more. I love this authors writing style. The characters. Their friendships. Even their struggles. These books are raw, emotional, real and just leave you wanting more. Unfortunately~ this is a novella so I flew through this story. Even though it’s a shorter read it gives you so much and you won’t be disappointed until you run out of words to read. I can’t wait for the rest of Denise’s story...this is a cliffhanger...even if it wasn’t I’d want more!
“Protecting herself hadn’t gotten her anywhere but by herself. It was time to take a chance on trusting someone again.”
Half-Broke Heart (Combat Hearts #1.5) by Tarina Deaton is amazing as I knew it would be. I read the first one and fell in love with Bree and Jase, and this one is no different. I loved reading about the start of Denise and Chris’s relationship. I enjoyed the close friendship the characters have with each other and Denise’s relationship with her dog Sprocket. This story picks up right in the middle of book one and in my opinion the author did an amazing job making it flow so well. These two stories intertwined so wonderfully, it was such an easy transition that I felt as though I was in the story without missing a beat. There are some things that Denise needs to work through because of a past relationship, and I can only hope she is able to overcome some of these issues. I can't wait to find out what's going to happen!! I do recommend reading the first one before you start this one. I absolutely loved those book!! I wish it did not leave me on a cliffhanger, mainly because I'm so impatient!! This is a must read!!!
This is the second book that I have read by Tarina and I was not disappointed. She has a great way of pulling you into her stories and her characters are such a joy to read about. For a novella I thought that it was really well written but I have to say I was just really getting into it when it ended so I definitely can’t wait to read more! I loved Chris in the previous book so I was really looking forward to reading the story between him and Denise. They did have an intense chemistry going on; this along with the relationship between them had me quickly absorbed into their story. I love the writing style of this author; she takes serious subjects and writes about them so well. She really brings awareness to things. This series so far is definitely on my favourites list for 2017! I can’t wait to read more of Chris and Denise’s story I have a feeling that there is so much more to come!!
Half-Broke Heart (Combat Hearts #2.5) by Tarina Deaton Stars: 4
OH MY GOODNESS! I completely fell in love with Denise in the first book. She is a sassy and is a strong character that you cannot help, but to love. I feel that this story really gave even more insight to Denise and her personality. However, there is so much more to learn, and I am excited to know more about her in the third book. Denise and Chris’ chemistry is hot and instant. I liked learning about Chris and seeing their interactions together. This book is really just part of their story and not the whole thing. I cannot wait to read more about them, and where their journey takes them.
The only reason why I did not give this story a five star rating was due to this story really only being the beginning. If the third book, which is the rest of Chris and Denise’s story, is as good as this part of their story, I am sure that it will be a five star rating book! I am SO excited to finish the rest of their story!
Half-Broke Heart is book 1.5 in a series so it’s right in the midst of everything- however, this is where I start. I wasn’t lost, any underlying stories were easily explained where I wasn’t tripped up in any way. It’s the first of anything I’ve read by this author. This book seems to be the start of Denise and Chris. Denise has some backstory and also serious things going on in her life right now. And Chris was drawn to her right away, but has some stuff going on at work, too. They are developed and interesting characters that were likeable, as well as the other couple mentioned. This book reeled me in enough to want to read the rest of the series. I’m intrigued and invested in these people now. I have a couple questions that need answering, but not in such a way it takes away from this story. The flow was good and it was a smooth, easy read. Took me less than a day to finish. It doesn’t have a happy ever after, I assume that’s where book 3 comes in.
