…so why does he feel like there is a beast inside him waiting to be set free?

Emma is a Black/white Muslim American mom of five, ages 6-22, in her mid-forties just trying to live her best life…which usually includes coffee, wine, and an unfortunate habit of one-clicking any pretty special edition that winds up in her feed. (If you DM it, she will come.)

She likes K-pop (#army, #moa) cultivation dramas (Till the End of the Moon,) precioussss silence, and collects more makeup than she uses.

She bends knee to Michelle Sagara West, Anne Bishop, N.K. Jemisin, Grace Draven, J.D. Robb, and Nalini Singh—a nod to Sanderson, Goodkind, Eddings, McCaffrey, and McKinley.

If you are looking for romantic epic fantasy set in complex, diverse, sex positive worlds with morally gray societies, powerful anti-heroes with THAD energy, multi-racial heroines at least 35—if not 350—coming into power, and a central theme of family, both dysfunctional and supportive, then you will binge her stories..

Great mix

I enjoyed Calla even though she is a very seasoned soldier, she still has her heart. Being kidnapped by Mateo was a little too easy but of course magic makes anything possible. I liked the instant fireworks they had and although some things were pretty obvious I liked feeling the anticipation of their reactions when mysteries get found out. The small glossary at the beginning was helpful. The book goes fast but I am hoping for more details as the series goes on.

If you love vampires and dragons Mateo is a great mix of both. Calla is a strong female character and Mateo, though young, fits well with her.

I love new PNR series—especially ones that are attached to Emma Alisyn! Her characters come to life in ways that make you want to love them or hate them, trust them, or act against them because you know that they are scoundrels. While the story arc centers around 5 stolen royal dragonlings, this story’s couple is Mateo, a vampire, mage, spy, and assassin who “moonlights” as a rock star as the front for the vampires he thinks he belongs to initially, and Calla, First General to "The Mad Queen" and her King. I felt bad for the Queen in this story. I also I kinda wish that Mateo Guerin was real cuz, despite the confusion that lies within; he’s pretty hot and quite crafty. There's also a looming mystery as to why the dragonlings were stolen and allowed to live? I like that little quirk that was thrown in about male dragons and their first Heat. That’s something you don’t see in a story. I’ll be starting the second book VERY soon!

I did not like the hero in the beginning.  He would glamour females into thinking that they wanted him in order to seduce them. He didn't have sex with them but he would go down and do the other things. That's still rape imo.

He was a contract killer and killed blindly (even women) without asking questions.

I started to like him in the middle because he started to redeem himself but then he f'd up at the end.  He abandoned his mate after learning one of her closest and longest friends was the traitor because "she needed to figure it out on her own"?!?   Annnnd he forgave Estophen who tried to kill him and his mate!!!!  WTF  Estophen was an evil contract killer who sometimes killed innocents!! Hero didnt change or redeem himself.  Ending pissed me off!!!

I like the author of the 2nd book and overall, this book did keep my attention and was a good story so will continue the series

Mateo Guerin is a rock star and a vampyr assassin. He has started to feel restless and unsettled with his existence. The groupies that follow him around are of no interest to him. The latest job his sire has sent him on links the two halves of his life.
Calla Andris is the First General of the Dragon Court. A warrior dragon shifter who has devoted her life to the service of her queen.
There is a price on someone's head. Who has more powyr the Vampyr or the Dragon? An action packed story full of battles , intrigue and big surprises. A marvellous kick ass heroine and a strong, sexy and honourable hero. This must be the first in a series and I desperately want to read all the rest.

Perfect start to what i hope will be a great series in tracking down the five stolen dragonlings and ending a war!! After kidnaping the First General of the dragons, the vampire assassin has second thoughts and doesn't know why , read the book to see why their bond is unbreakable and so strong from the beginning. . And figure out who one of the traitors is , who wants to overthrow the current Dragon leaders. 4⭐'s . I received a gifted copy of the book and am voluntarily choosing to leave an honest and unbiased review.

Mateo is a Vampyr and a rock star who meets Calla a General in the Khepreians army. Mateo wants to spend time with her on her Island where he has just finished a concert, but things are not what they seem. Mateo is a more than he pretends, he kidnaps Calla and when she awakens to find that she is being held and in America she is shocked. Mateo is the one who gets a rude awakening and that changes everything. A entertaining romance adventure with a major twist. Excellent characters. I purchased this book. I volunteered an honest review.

An amazing introduction to the world of shifters for me

I had never read a shifters book before and at first I didn't think I would get it, but this book was the perfect introduction. As an old wannabe rock star myself I was able to connect with Mateo and thus made the book a lot easier to read. This was also my first paid for book on my kindle, which says a lot for the awesome cover that hooked me in and I shall certainly be reading the rest of the series .

Mateo is a Rock Star with a secret Vampyr life. Calla is kidnapped in the middle of the night from her home. No one should have been able to get to her there. Calla is the First General and no damsel in distress, but she seems to have meet her match in Mateo.
I loved the verbal sparing these two go through. She pushed his buttons but knows when to stop just before going to far. Still have some questions and can't wait to read the other books in the series.

The first piece of the puzzle

Trained as an assassin and turned by a powerful vampire, Mateo did not know his true self. Until he was assigned the capture of the dragon First General, Calla. Together they experience an unexplained connection, even as Calla plans her escape. Lies and betrayal run deep in this story, the plot twists, the action, they all keep you glued to the story.

Màting his General

Mateo has accepted an assignment from his Vampyr sire to abduct the Delphina's First General. What he doesn't expect is his attraction to Calla the beautiful dragon woman. Readers should enjoy reading this book which I heartily recommend. Following the lead characters adventures as they learn to know each.other makes exciting reading. Intrigue and court drama are involved as well as secret identities.

Great fantasy read

Mystery, romance, action, shifters, vampires, royalty, this book has it all in spades. Highly recommend you read this book and find out about Mateo and Calla. You get a happy for now ending but many more questions to answer and as it's the first in a series of 5 that makes sense. I'm eager to read the next book!

He was a rock star, but also a very special type of assassin. He crept in and stole her from her sleeping quarters. Their story had just begun.

I requested an ARC of the book at no cost to the author for a review. Rock star Mateo is a huge star and also a secret vampire assassin. Calla is the First General for a faction of the dragon shifters. When Mateo is dispatched to collect Calla and possibly relieve her of her head, they find that they are drawn together in more than just the captive/captor way. This book is loaded with mystery, action and sexual tension. A great start to an urban paranormal or fantasy series. I'm looking forward to the rest of this series and all that this book set up to be coming.

My first impression was that the title seems very simple, yet after reading this book I realize it is perfect. There is quite s mystery to be solved in this storyline, and the two main characters play their roles with perfection. Not necessarily a short story, this flows so well it feels as though you reach the conclusion quickly. Well written, this book did spark my curiosity for future books in this series. A great HEA is reached with the promise of future mysteries to be solved. This voluntary review is based against an advance copy.

Dragon, vampires and mystery plus some steamy romance.

The book started slow to me but about halfway through I really started to enjoy it. I liked that the plot took place in more modern times. It had mystery and drama with some steamy romance. The characters were interesting and easy to like. I will probably read the rest of the series as they come out.

What happens when the person hired to abduct and kill you, ends up being your mate? I loved this story. Calla was a strong female, a General in a war against the enemies of the dragons. But she is also supportive, and helps calm the Queen, who has not been herself since her children were abducted years ago. Mateo's story was intriguing, and only someone as powerful as he is could be the mate of Calla. I can't wait to find out in the coming books about the other abducted children.

Good start to a series

The First General is quite a strong woman, but she is surprised by Mateo in more ways than one.
We as the readers of course know that he is indeed one of the lost princes, but the author is deft in her presentation of the characters' journey to this knowledge.
I would have like a little more world building/background. The cast of characters at the beginning was a great help.

A unique new world

I love how this takes such ordinary paranormal creatures as dragons and vampires and turns them into something just a little different than expected. I really appreciated that the heroine was an "older woman". It's nice to see more of those in today's fiction. The opportunity to geek out over the pop culture references completely delighted me. I want to read it again to find the ones I missed. After a certain point the story took over and I was more concerned with finding out how they were going to get themselves out of the mess they'd landed in than in spotting what other movies had been referenced. I think Calla and Matteo are a perfect pairing. They're both strong, independent, and skilled in different forms of combat that compliment each other. I'm intrigued and want to know more about the missing hatchlings. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. I have to say this book was a very fast read and kept me wanting to read more and more as it progressed to the end. Mateo is a badass vampyr that falls for the First General of the Dragons, Calla. But Mateo has a small issue that Calla seems to be able to gain control of and then all heck breaks loose in L.A. Looking forward to the next book in the mini series by Cecilia Lane ~ Dragon Claimed. Happy reading :-)

Calla is First General of Patomas, and she is kidnapped by Mateo. It doesn't take long for her to discover that Mateo is not only a vampyr, but he is also a dragon, and possibly the son of the rulers of Patomas. Mateo receives orders to kill Calla, but they have mated, so he refuses. Calla and Mateo will have to fight his cognate and a traitor in Calla's ranks in order to have a life together. This is an exciting, sexy, and action packed paranormal romance with some suspense thrown in, fantastic book. I look forward to the rest of this series.

A very interesting and entertaining read. It's definitely not what I expected

I really liked the beginning of this new mixed - author series. A new take on the shifter genre. Mateo hides his Vampyr in his "day" job as a rock star. His adopted family are members of a group that hire themselves out to.. take care of problems. Calla is the First General of the Dragon Court, and apparently a problem to someone. Mateo is tasked to kidnap Calla and hold her until he receives further orders. This is not an easy thing to do considering the whole First General thing and all. He manages to accomplish the kidnapping, but nothing else is going to go as planned.
