I was introduced to this book at our denomination's recent Regional Assembly in Austin, TX, with a theme of Evangelism - MacDonald has some excellent ideas, many based on research and studies done by churches, that can aid a church in changing how they are viewed by others, and often, how a congregation views itself as far as how they are affecting a community. -- From the publisher: 80% of evangelical churches are in decline or stagnation. A third of our communities have no perceived need for a local church. Many churches aren't known for anything relevant in their communities. SOLUTION: Be Known For Something that will reconnect you to your community. Some good thoughts - especially about “be known for something,” but the book itself was not greater than its title. It is a very very basic coaching book on how to use marketing principles in your church. Some things to learn, for sure, but the first half of the book is far more helpful than the pragmatic second half. It already feels out of date.

Overall this was an extremely practical book to start with for my mentoring semester. This book built a solid foundation for the remainder of the semester of Communications and Marketing. Two big 'takeaways' from this book are becoming more aware of my audience and reminding me how important it is to be consistent.

Two of my favorite quotes are, "We've ultimately done a great job of being salt and a poor job of being light." (19) Another favorite is, "Our churches don't need more content. They need edited content." (181).

This will definitely be a book I will be returning to as I learn more about branding, communicating with our congregation and what my thread will look like.

I've had the please of knowing Mark for several years, and I have always been impressed with his energy and transparency as he tries to help churches move from being known for what they're against to being known for what they're for.

This book is the perfect way for a church and staff to read together and talk about.

Be Known for Something is a challenge to church leaders, communicators and congregants alike to raise the level of discourse in their congregations and communities.

In a world where people are increasingly critical of the Church, it is more important now than ever that churches as themselves hard questions, listen to the answers, and make the changes that need to be made to keep the doors open and impact the world. Be Known for Something is a rallying cry against complacency and "church like it's always been." Instead, author and speaker Mark Macdonald reminds leaders that the message they have matters to the world, and that it's still the best news we can share. He reminds us that churches are too often known for what they stand against, and it's time to stand for something - and stand proud.

Be Known for Something is written in the same conversational and compelling style that Macdonald teaches in. He uses practical stories and gives readers the questions they need to ask and the encouragement they need to work together with leadership to make a difference. This is not a book just for one person to read alone; buy a few copies and share with your church staff as you seek to be known for something bigger in the world.

Each chapter also had reflection/discussion questions to help guide your church into the world of being Known for Something!
