పుస్తకం చదువుతున్నాను అనిపించడం కన్నా ఏదో ౮౦ల సినిమా చూస్తున్నాననిపించింది చదువుతున్నంత సేపు. కళ్యాణి, ప్రకాశం, ఇందిర, కృష్ణమూర్తి -- ఈ పాత్రలన్నీ మనకు ఆ దశకంలో అదే రూపంలో, ప్రస్తుతం వేరే రూపాల్లో కనిపిస్తారు. పాత్రల మధ్య సంభాషణకు వాడిన భాష కొన్ని చోట్ల నాకు అసందర్భంగా తోచింది.

An interesting novel with powerful characterizations of its proagonists. Even though the novel had only 4 major characters whose affections/love among them evolve over time, the characteristics and personality traits of the 4 characters- Prakasam, Indira, Kalyani, Krishnamoorty - are powerfully and impressionally portrayed. The characters stay with you long after you finish the novel. The title is aptly named as these characters are timeless. You can always find such characters around everyday people and also you can decide what kind of a person you are. It reminds me of such powerful characterization in Ayn Rand's 'Fountainhead'.

Dr P Sridevi is a woman whose life is very short lived and passed away at a young age of 32. She is a doctor by profession and this is her only novel and popular work besides a few other short stories . It referred to as a classic in modern Telugu literature and recommended along side with names like Chalam, Ravi Sastri, Gopichand etc. The characters and ideas in the novel are far ahead of their time and the novel feels relevant in today's times as well. The novel is written in 1957.

Especially the strong woman character Indira is a prior image of an empowered woman of 21st century who is vivacious and wants to live a worthy and happy life on her terms with a man of courage and will. Kalyani is a docile, sweet and gentle person owing to her upbringing in a emotion-less, poor and melancholic environment. Prakasam - a medical student is cowardly and unable to standup to his uncle who raised him to be with the woman he loved. Krishnamurty is a rich young person who lived life care free but yet good, brave person with strong opinions.

This has become one of my best Telugu books I have read for the story telling style and characterization. The characters are not black or white, mostly in grey and that depends on the situation/our point of view. Highly recommended for the telugu readers.

పుస్తకం చివరన review లో డా.చంద్ర శేకర రావు గారు ఒక మాట అన్నారు: గొప్ప రచనలు పాఠకులకు తాత్విక దర్శనం అందించాలి అని. ఆ విషయానికొస్తే ఈ కథ success అయింది అనే చెప్పాలి. Responsible independent living మీద ఉన్న ఆలోచనలను ఈ కథ రూపంలో మన ముందు పెట్టారు డా. శ్రీదేవి.

బ్రతికున్న కొన్ని నాళ్ళు ధైర్యంగా బ్రతకాలి. రోజుకి పది సార్లు చావకూడదు అనే సిద్దాంతాన్ని ఇందిర పాత్ర ద్వారా చెప్పింది. కష్టాలు వస్తే స్వాభిమానంతో ఎలా కుంగిపోకుండా బ్రతకచ్చు అనే సిద్దాంతాన్ని కళ్యాణి పాత్ర ద్వారా చెప్పింది. ఎంత చదువు ఉన్నా, ధైర్యంగా నిర్ణయాలు తీసుకునే బలం లేకపోతే జీవితం ఎంత దుర్లభముగా ఉంటుందొ ప్రకాశం పాత్ర ద్వారా చెప్పింది. ఆ బలం ఉంటే ఎలా ఉంటదొ కృష్ణమూర్తి పాత్ర ద్వారా చెప్పింది. ఈ నలుగురి జీవితలె ఈ కథ. బావుంది!

కాలాతీతమైన నవల ఎప్పటికీ గుర్తుకుపోయి పాత్రలతో దేవి గారు 84 ఏళ్ల పాటు నిజంగా నే నవలలను చిరస్థాయిలో నిలబెట్టారు ఎప్పుడైనా సరే ఆ పాత్రలు ఆ పాత్రధారులు అలాగే మనకు ఎవరో ఒకరు తారసపడతారు
