From Romania to New Orleans through nine centuries and thirty-nine lives, Phoenix Maison remembers them all. What she doesn’t remember is how she came to be trapped in this cycle of reincarnation. Every year in every life, she prepares for her possible death, but this life is different from the others. She loves her family and her native New Orleans and longs for a future with her girlfriend.
Determined to break her curse, Phoenix stumbles down an oddly familiar path back to the only life she doesn’t remember, where her immortal soul lived in an immortal body.
Even as bloodless corpses pile in her beloved city, Phoenix still hopes to escape her destiny. But her seemingly endless time is running out and she must either embrace what she was always meant to be or let humanity meet a brutal fate. The future of mortals and immortals alike lies in her choice.
Jae Dawn is a South Louisiana native who doesn’t quite yet live in her beloved New Orleans, but an hour away isn’t bad. She’s a dedicated volunteer for Magic Happens Rabbit Rescue but is ironically a mom to five rescue cats: Ash, Venom, Aedyn and Phoenix (brothers also known as the Fire Duo), and Brynn.
Jae suffers from major wanderlust, dreaming of traveling the world, living in England, and operating a rescue for Manx and bobtail cats. She boasts an ever-growing collection of over 500 vampire items including clothes, posters, toys, collectables, movies, books, and everything in between.
So wow…just wow! I think I just found my absolute favorite vampire book ever!
There’s so much to this amazing tale that I don’t even know where to begin. I think I’ll start by saying I’ve wanted to read this book for a while and now that I’ve finally gotten my hands on it, I devoured it in only a few hours. Phoenix, very much like her name, lives on a cycle of birth and death, 39 reincarnations to get to the life she currently lives in. A life she loves. As the story goes on, she learns the truth of her curse and what she can do to break it.
A story of romance, adventure, and supernatural angst, this is a fantastic book that I would definitely recommend to any and all readers! Even if you don’t like vampire stories, Jae has a great way of rewriting the age-old tale of blood-sucking monsters into something new and marvelous. I can’t wait to see what else this series has in store!
Once again I went outside my genre to read this vampire tale. About 25 percent of the way through I was already recommending it to others. Great story, and I want to know more. Great job.
A great read, suitable for YA and YA-at-heart alike. While there are some familiar paranormal concepts, there are plenty of twists and turns that I just didn’t see coming. Jae uses descriptive language beautifully where needed, but doesn’t stall the plot for the sake of it. Well worth a read.
Phoenix Maison has lived through many lifetimes and remembers them all. Now that her birthday is approaching, she knows that this may be the one where she dies again except this time she wants to stay. She likes her life in New Orleans, her family, and her girlfriend. The only life she can't remember is the first one, the one that started this cycle. If she can finally figure out what happened then, she might be able to break the curse. Phoenix tells her own story and an interesting one it is. Phoenix must deal with all sorts of paranormal creatures and she is a plucky heroine. Of course, she's not your typical high school student with the number of lives she's lived, but in many ways, she's also a product of her times which is one of the reasons she wants to remain in this life. The New Orleans setting is fascinating and the author incorporates much of the culture and descriptions into the story. New Orleans is often the setting for paranormal stories, but I found this a fresh view of the city and a story with a very different take on the usual paranormals that I enjoyed very much. This is the first book in the series, and I can't wait to see what happens next. I received an ARC from the author and am giving an honest review.
From the very moment you turn the first page, to the very last, you're thrown into Phoenix 's turbulent life, or one of them. Filled with amazingly real and surreal characters and a riveting and suspense filled storyline, you are left almost panting from trying to keep up with the book. Jae Dawn has created magical lore and another twist on vampires and Romania gypsies. A rich and exhilarating world that makes you feel like you're there. From the busy Bourbon street in New Orleans to the flashbacks of Phoenix 's whirlwind lives. Several amazing twists that carried the story that bit closer to brilliance. I would spend all of my immortal lives hunting for this book, so that each time I could read it, over and over. Multiple diverse characters were a breath of fresh air and Jae Dawn has created a memorable character in Phoenix. One to join the ranks of the likes of Lestat amongst names. Highly recommended.
This was such a good book! The main character is relatable and funny and I was instantly invested in her plot. The story is engaging and I found myself reading well I to the night just to discover what happens next. While it had some of the tropes of an enjoyable YA, this book had a refreshing new take on vampires and a thoughtful magic system. I'm definitely looking forward to more from this author and I hope the sequel is out soon!!
