After recovering from their ordeal in Loch Ness Revenge, Natalie and Austin McQueen head to the Sumatran jungle with their friend Henrik to find the legendary Orang Pendek, primitive ape-like humanoids. Specifically, they're looking for the Orang Pendek that killed Henrik's father. Can they find the lost city of Gadang Ur and the Orang Pendek that dwell there so Henrik can quench the desire for revenge that threatens to consume him?

Since I am medically unable to resist one of Hunter Shea's cryptid books, I pounced on this one a few minutes after I finished Forest of Shadows.

Savage Jungle is an Indiana Jones-type of jungle adventure, combining the thrills of Raiders of the Lost Ark with the gore of most of Hunter Shea's books. It's one hell of fun read.

After recovering at a resort for a couple months, the McQueen twins attempt to return the favor Henrik Kooper gave them in the bloodbath that was Loch Ness Revenge. On their expedition, they encounter lost ruins, relict populations of dinosaurs, and the cryptids of the subtitle, the Orang Pendek.

I actually preferred this one to Loch Ness Revenge by a slight margin. Maybe it was the jungle setting or the relentless action. The expedition got chewed up by dinosaurs and shat out the other end. It would not have shocked me if they were all killed. Shea even detailed Orang Pendek culture to such a degree that I wouldn't mind a return trip to Gadang Ur. Not to mention some breadcrumbs left at the end. The characters speculate that their experience at Loch Ness might have led to humanity taking off their blinders in regard to the unknown and there are some hints dropped toward the end at more linked adventures with the survivors of this one, something I'm definitely on board for.

Instead of another tired Indiana Jones sequel or remaking The Mummy, Savage Jungle would make a fantastic summer blockbuster. Four out of five stars.

Edge of your seat suspense and fast paced action!

jungle-gif.gif

A small backstory:

Welcome to the Jungle! The twins (Natalie and Austin) are back in another adventure that takes them along with their friend Henrik deep into the jungles of Sumatra. They are wanting to discover an ancient city that might or might not exist, but getting there is not going to be a walk in the park.

The jungle is ruled by orange ape men along with some other fascinating animals that I wasn't expecting as I started reading the book. This is not the normal jungle with lions, tigers, and bears as there are other more dangerous creatures roaming the deep dark areas of the jungle.

The book moves quickly and I love the characters more in this book as I have become attached to them. There are some quip one liners that Natalie throws out there that made me chuckle through out the book. There is plenty of action from the first chapter all the way to the end!

The twins thought that their last adventure in "Loch Ness Revenge" was a harrowing experience, but they come to realize that the Loch Ness was a birthday party compared to what they have to endure in the jungle!

I was on pins and needles throughout most of the book as I didn't know what was going to happen next. Four "Jungle Ape" Stars!

So I had way too much fun with Henrik, Austin, and Natalie in Lock Ness Revenge, to not jump on this continuation. This is a very comparable premise, too, however focuses on Henrik avenging his father’s death, at the hands of Orang Pendeks. It’s basically nonstop action throughout, moves very quickly, and has very little downtime. Once again, it’s an extremely surface-level plot, as was Loch Ness, so be prepared to just read for pure entertainment here. But it’s a very good time, and I enjoyed exploring the hierarchy and culture of the Pendeks. They were not just written to be overly aggressive bigfoot types out for blood. And the other animals, which were unexpected, that were involved just added to the enjoyment. I felt reminiscent of the excursion onto Skull Island in King Kong to save Ann Darrow. So if you like lots of explosions, gunfire, jungle pursuits and cryptids running all over, then give this one a look.

From the start of the book there was never a lack of action. The story is centered around the twins, Austin and Natalie. Also included is Henrik, another friend that accompanied them on the last adventure, the Loch Ness monster. They are setting out to find the Orang Pendek due to a personal vendetta Henrik has with them.
It is a good story, sometimes similar to Indiana Jones, other times Jurassic Park, sealing it off with an ending that would make Clive Cussler proud. If you want gore there is a good amount in this book. Natalie handles stress with witty sarcasm which seemed a bit overboard at times. The good thing about Natalie is whenever she gets in a bind somehow “The Force is with her”.
At first I was going to give this read a 3 but the last part of the book earned a 4. I think I will look into other books by this author. Fellow GR friends … enjoy the ride.

SAVAGE JUNGLE: Lair Of the Orang Pendek, by Hunter Shea, features the characters of fraternal twins, Austin and Natalie McQueen, and friend/legend hunter, Henrik Kooper, formerly of the German Special Forces. We first meet these individuals in Shea's LOCH NESS REVENGE, where Henrik assisted the McQueens in getting their revenge on the creature that tore their family apart by murdering their parents. Now, it's time for the McQueens to return the favor.

As a boy, Henrik witnessed the brutal murder of his father by a band of legendary Orang Pendeks, and ever since, he has been planning his own revenge. While most people would scoff at the existence of such creatures, Natalie and Austin know first hand how REAL these "legends" can be.

". . . These creatures, or any elusive animal for that matter, exist behind a cloak of disbelief . . . "

With their mission in mind, the trio are joined by some other friends of Henrik, and head out into the deepest Sumatran Jungle. Still keeping in character with their sarcastic wit and view of the world around them, the twins resign themselves to whatever fate awaits them.

"You think we're really going to find a tribe of Orang Pendeks?" "I doubt it. But I am sure we'll find a tropical disease or two."

I absolutely loved these three main characters with their personalities, resourcefulness, comedic sarcasm, and loyalty to each other. I felt this made them the perfect candidates for a tangle with creatures few have ever glimpsed.

"It wasn't a matter of what could go wrong. It was more a matter of what wouldn't go wrong . . . "

According to Henrik, the creatures made their home in a lost city known as Gadang Ur: ". . . Sometimes, places are lost for a damn good reason."

The location of a dense jungle couldn't have been any more perfect for this journey. Between the nearly impenetrable jungle itself, the large bugs, and other unknown creatures that call the place home, there is literally no safe place for our gang to rest. The tension begins early in the novel, and manages to ratchet up steadily throughout the entire story.

"Those fuckers were fast and strong and worst of all, relentless. But they weren't bulletproof . . ."

It doesn't take long for things to get really bad and for Austin, Nat, and Henrik to realize that there are other dangers in the jungle that could just as easily prove fatal to them.

"I would hazard a guess and say that we're pretty much screwed."

Even Henrik, who has been preparing for this combat nearly his entire life, has to concede that: ". . . There was no black and white out here in the middle of nowhere. They were drowning in a turbulent sea of gray where all of his assumptions had been tossed like a rudderless boat."

Nearly all throughout, however; Austin and Nat keep keep their flippant personalities, and seem to take each new impediment in stride.

"Tell me again why you think Gadang Ur is the place to be? Because I'm not feeling it right about now."

The jungle hides more dangers then the Orang Pendek, and they are all about to find out the harsh reality of their situation.

Shea keeps the pace going strong with this one, not allowing for even a moment to take a breath of relief. The incredible personalities he's brought to life are ones you won't want to forget at any point. In my opinion, theses characters MAKE the novel complete, and I can only hope that we see more from them in the near future.

". . . maybe some places are never meant to be found . . ."

Overall, I found this to be a fast-paced, thrilling novel with dynamic characters and new "surprises" popping up all throughout the journey.

Highly Recommend!

Another fun, action-packed addition to the Tales of the Crypto Hunter series! I absolutely love the characters in this series-Natalie, Austin & Henrik, so I'm really hoping Shea brings them back for a third cryptid creature hunt.

Loch Ness Revenge is the first book in the series and you should definitely read it first before reading this book so you get the full backstory.

Having survived the trials and tribulations they faced in Scotland in the previous book, Henrik, Austin, and Natalie enter the savage jungle of Sumatra in search of the lost city of Gadang Ur and the lost race of cryptids who reside there, the savage Orang Pendek. I didn't think that Loch Ness Revenge was one of Shea's better efforts, but this one was a lot of fun. It has some elements of Haggard and Burroughs and a little Indiana Jones for good measure. Natalie's quips were occasionally quite amusing, and I liked all three characters much better this time around. There were some dinosaurs roaming about, which was just a little bit too over the top even for me, but it was a fun adventure story overall.

Review: SAVAGE JUNGLE by Hunter Shea

SAVAGE JUNGLE is a direct sequel to Hunter Shea's earlier LOCH NESS REVENGE, with twins Natalie and Austin McQueen keeping their promise to aid Henrik in tracking the bizarre Orang Pendek of Sumatra, believed to live in the environs of a city lost in antiquity, Gadang Ur. Of course, revenge never comes easy, even when eaten cold, and Henrik's exploring group finds amazing sights and seemingly impossible creatures. Mr. Shea neatly mixes in some metaphysics and an effective suspension of disbelief.

I have yet to read a book by Hunter Shea that I do not like. There are definitely very few authors I like who are in that category. I have always loved the idea of living creatures unknown to science so "Savage Jungle: Lair of the Orang Pendek" was right up my alley.
Natalie and Austin McQueen are just getting over their adventurous trip to Scotland to find the Loch Ness Monster when they are asked to help Henrik Kooper find and destroy the creatures who killed his father right in front of his eyes. They agree to help him because he assisted them with the creatures in Scotland so they are off to Sumatra to face more creatures that scientists do not believe exist.
I love how Hunter Shea sets the scene in his books. I felt as if I were in the jungle along with Natalie, Austin, Henrik. He describes the oppressive heat, and almost claustrophobic atmosphere so well. I have not read the first book in this series, "Loch Ness Revenge" but that is the amazing thing about Hunter Shea. His books can be read as stand alone novels as well. Highly recommended!

Savage Jungle sees the return of Natalie and Austin McQueen, fresh off their hunt for revenge against the Loch Ness monster. In the course of Loch Ness Revenge, the twins made a promise to help Henrik, their uber-rich German benefactor with a van full of guns, track down the monsters responsible for his father's death. And so the trio set off for Sumatra, hot on the heels of the brutal Orang Pendek, a tribe of fabled simian-like creatures.

Hunter Shea does a fine job of delivering action-packed cryptid adventures, layering in dashes of horror and humor for lots of fresh, pulpy goodness. Given the atrocities the McQueens and Henrik have faced in their youth at the hands of wildly different monsters, and their shared adventure in the prior book, there's an automatic bit of camaraderie between the group.

But it's in the action department where Shea really excels here, and he tosses in a few welcome surprises along the way. While traipsing through the Sumatran rain forest, our league of adventurers manage to stumble across more dangers than they ever could have reasonably planned for, and the Orang Pendeks turn out to be a bit more than any of them had bargained for.

Shea is one of the most consistent writers that I follow, and he always manages to deliver fun, full-throttle reads that present fresh twists on the popular cryptids that have so clearly captured his imagination and interest.

Hunter Shea is one of my favourite authors. Whenever I pick up one of his books, I know I'm going to be in for a gripping adventure with scares, horror, great plot and characters. #Savage Jungle' is just such a book. Here we meet again brother and sister Natalie and Austin McQueen who, along with , Henrik Kooper battled with monsters in the author;s earlier novel, 'Loch Ness Revenge'. Once again, Hunter Shea takes a mythical beast - in this case, the Orang Pendak - and weaves a real page-turner with its base deep in folklore. In the tropical jungle of Sumatra, live a race of small, humanoid creatures, savage, primitive and, despite their diminutive size, fearsomely strong. Many years earlier, Henrik saw his father literally torn apart by one of them. Now, with his friends, he is out for revenge. Needless to say, the Orang Pendek aren't going to take this lightly. As the trio discover, their intelligence, and knowledge of their hostile environment make them a formidable enemy. But it isn't only the Orang Pendek that are to be feared. Don't miss this great story - in some ways reminiscent of H. Rider Haggard, Edgar Rice Burroughs' 'The Land That Time Forgot' and Conan Doyle's 'The Lost World'

Review copy

Fresh from their adventure in Scotland, Natalie McQueen, and her brother Austin are called upon to aid Henrik Kooper in his quest to find the lost city Gadang Ur and the elusive Orang Pendek. Go ahead and google it. You'll find it's every bit as much of a thing as Bigfoot, Yeti, The Jersey Devil, and The Loch Ness Monster. All cryptids Hunter Shea has written about in previous books. As a matter of fact, Savage Jungle is a sequel to his book Loch Ness Revenge.

Ah, yes Loch Ness Revenge, it's where Natalie and Austin called upon the services to Mr. Kooper knowing that one day they would join him in revenging the death of his father in the rain forests of Sumatra. In Savage Jungle that debt has come due and it just might costs them their lives.

"He didn’t know what they were. They appeared human, but they also bore a strong resemblance to apes or orangutans. Except they walked perfectly upright, with broad shoulders and small heads."

"The Orang Pendek were fast and brutal and most of all, intelligent. "

“If I decide to write a book about this, no one will ever publish it. It’s just way too out there.”

The writing is crisp and clean. It's a breeze to read Unrelenting horror with just a touch of humor. You've got to read Savage Jungle just to see how the movie Cool Hand Luke plays a part in the story. No one does monster horror better than Hunter Shea. A wonderful roller-coaster ride full of surprises.

Although Savage Jungle is a sequel, it works as a stand-alone novel. Needless to say, I loved the hell out of this book. Recommended.

Savage Jungle is published by Severed press and is available in both paperback and e-book formats. If you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited you can read it at no additional charge. Also, if you are an Amazon Prime member you can read it for FREE using the Kindle Owners Lending Library.

From the author's bio - Hunter Shea is the product of a childhood weened on The Night Stalker, The Twilight Zone, and In Search Of. He doesn't just write about the paranormal - he actively seeks out the things that scare the hell out of people and experiences them for himself.

Hunter is an amateur cryptozoologist, having written wild, fictional tales about Bigfoot, The Montauk Monster, The Dover Demon and many new creatures to come. Copies of his books, The Montauk Monster and The Dover Demon, are currently on display in the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, ME.

Living with his wonderful family and two cats, he's happy to be close enough to New York City to get Gray's Papaya hotdogs when the craving hits. The author warned me this story was crazy. He was so right. And I loved that.

I didn’t realize at first that this was a sequel to Loch Ness Revenge. The twins, Natalie and Austin, got their revenge on the creature that killed their parents with the help of Henrik Kooper, a mysterious wealthy benefactor. Now, the tables are turned, and it’s time to return the favor. So when he asks for their help to destroy the creatures that ripped his father apart before his very eyes, they hop on the plane and head to the Sumatra jungle.

So, going by the cover image and the name Orang Pendek, I thought this was going to be about some killer mutant apes. That would be cool. What I got was even better though. And really terrifying. Hunter showed me what they looked like, described how they smelled, and then let loose that creative brain of his and dropped me into a story that was every which way and wild.

I liked all of the characters. Which was bad in a way. I know the author doesn’t hesitate to feed his characters to his monsters. While I like that a lot as it adds to the suspense, I didn’t want any of these to die. Even the minor ones were likeable and Hunter made them come to life for me. Be prepared to hold your breath, read as fast as you can to see what happens, and……I’ll leave that for you to find out.

It was easy for me to relate to the conditions the characters had to contend with as I live on the Gulf Coast and sweating off your make-up before you get to your car in the morning is a common thing. But, I know the jungle is much worse and I don’t have to worry about being eaten when I step out my door. After reading about the first encounter they had with these things, then the second, the third, and so on, I was so immersed in the story I could feel the heat, the desperation and fear. The Orang Pendek weren’t the only thing they had to worry about either. It wouldn’t be a Shea book without some other monsters showing up.

I was promised insane fun and I got it. If you like a story filled with ominous creatures and all of the action you can handle, then I recommend you grab Savage Jungle. The title says it all.

I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.

This book and review should be read after Loch Ness Revenge as it features survivors from the first book. I admit that I was not looking forward to reading this book because I really didn't like Natalie the MC and to a lesser extent her brother. However I was quietly pleased to report that I did like the characters in this book and it was a good story to read.

Natalie, Austin and Henrik have survived the battle with the Loch Ness monsters and have been relaxing for six weeks at a quiet German spa to heal and recover from the ordeal. The peace is shattered one day when Henrik declares that he has arranged the trip to Indonesia. Now it is time for the twins to help Henrik with his own revenge mission, entering the jungles of Sumatra in search of the Orang Pendrik to search for the humanoid monkey creatures that murdered Henrik's father when he was a kid. Natalie is scared of flying and unsure of what they might find, but a promise is a promise, and they head off to meet up with the hired guides.

Oscar is the game hunter kind of guy who knows how to take care of himself. Surya is the local guide who has hired porters to carry the supplies into the jungle. With the hot humid weather and the eerie jungle noises, nerves are very much stretched. That is when they get their first look at how deadly the Orang Pendek are, and the other surprises the jungle has in store are going to test them all to the limits of their endurance...

This was pretty high octane compated to Loch Ness Revenge. From the moment they get to the jungle, the characters are faced with a series of deadly monsters to deal with and things get interesting when they are all split up and facing their own problems, while trying to find each other again. This is one jungle where if you go down to the woods today, you're in for a big surprise! There is also the side plot of trying to find a lost city from legend which is thought to be guarded by the Orang Pendek and that was interesting too. I'm a great believer that you could find anything in these jungle places so I liked what we did meet!

I really love the character of Henrik. He is smart and determined and is a prepper for every occasion. When things start to go wrong, he keeps his head and tries to think of a plan to get him out of the mess. He is always resourceful and I enjoyed the plot about revenge for the death of his father, and the trouble it gets him into. I could happily read a whole pile of books about his adventures hunting for cryptids. I liked all the characters this time round and enjoyed the book more than I expected to.

Overall there was plenty of mad monster action to get your teeth into which is the kind of book I like. There was a fast pace to the action, keeping you guessing what disaster was coming next. There was also a twist that I wasn't expecting and that certainly changed the plot towards the end! I like it when an author can surprise you! This was another entertaining adventure from Hunter Shea who is fast becoming a favourite author!

You know the tired cliche people use where they say something like “they say never judge a book by its cover but I did and I’m glad!”, you know the cliche stacking, it’s kinda neat. Meanwhile, I totally judge every single Hunter Shea novel by the cover. Have I ever been let down? NOPE. Every time I think “This will be about *insert cover monster here* and completely and totally rule ass.” I’m pleasantly surprised with a ton of other stuff that rules ass. I won’t spoil anything in savage jungle but I will say this, as with every other Hunter Shea novel I’ve read, when I closed the last page I simply said “Hell yeah” and ordered another from amazon.

Savage Jungle was a terrific story in the B-movie lost city icky bug variety. I had a great time from start to finish with this one. I’ve been saving it up for a bit, having ordered it with several other Hunter Shea classics. I’d read the outstanding Slash last and then moved on to some other authors to give myself a break.
The writing was outstanding with solid third-person limited and past tense. There was virtually no head-hopping in this one and given the book was relatively short, the narrative was brisk and the pace fast and furious.
The characters were likeable, and it made me want to read Loch Ness Revenge except I have already checked it out and skipped it because it’s in first-person, and I won’t read first-person. Oh well, too bad, as this is the same main characters, but told through a much better third-person perspective.
The story was a fun, gory, and strange romp through the Sumatran jungle. Part a revenge story, part Indiana Jones on steroids, part a lost city escapade, it never let up right until the satisfying conclusion. The only problem is now I am left wanting for more.
This was an outstanding read and I very highly recommend it.

I think was a great book for me to start reading. I have never read anything from this author and this book made me want to read more. I love books with creatures in them and loved how the author included all kinds. I also love that the book ended up being completely different than what I thought it would be.

The only thing I questioned about the book was that it eludes to all the characters being together to fight the Loch Ness Monster. It made it seem like I should have read something first. I didn't see anywhere that said this was part of a series though. I am going to have to see if it was.

A mysterious lost city, a race of cryptid human-like beings, and a quest for vengeance and closure in the Indonesian jungles. Really good book, more sci-fi than horror, but still highly enjoyable. Kind of like Burroughs meets Rollins. Cant wait to read more of Mr. Shea's work.

This book has great characters. Natalia, Austin and Henrick, being sarcastic in the face of danger is endearing. Henrick thinks he is prepared to avenge his fathers death at the hands of these creatures but he isn't. Bungle in the jungle. Good scary, romp.
