Rate this book
After finding himself in a coffin, on the way to Boot Hill, Clay Tulane wants answers. As he pieces together the story of how he got there with the help of local townsfolk Miss Winona and the boy Pocket, he finds himself drawn into a violent stuggle against local landowner, Marsden Rockwell, and his bunch of hired guns. Tulane has more personal reasons, however, for seeking a final confrontation with the notorious killer, Lonnie Spade. As tension mounts and battle lines are drawn, Tulane's search for the truth throws up as many questions as answers. What is the real reason Rockwell and his Bar Nothing outfit want to take over the neighbouring Pitchfork L, and is it connected with the mystery of the strange mesa known as Sawn-Off

I read many Black Horse Westerns, all of them by Paul Bedford and I really liked them. I wanted to know if it was the BHW formula that was so good or if it was the writing of Paul Bedford (or hopefully both). Well, I like Back From Boot Hill from Colin Bainbridge, but it was definitely a step bellow the books from Paul Bedford. Still, Back From Boot Hill is a good western story, and Colin Bainbridge has talent. Everything I liked from my previous reads of BHW is there: great pacing, good action and strong characters. The beginning of the story is very unusual and quite interesting with the main character awaking inside a coffin! Then we get to unravel what happen and move toward a classic range war. Bainbridge prose is of the workmanlike variety and he keeps the story moving along at a good pace. I will try other books from this author specifically and other BHW authors to see if any can take that step to acheive Paul Bedford level.
