Cascade City #1

A New Beginning

Rate this book
When tragedy strikes his small band of werewolves who’d been roaming the countryside in search of a new home after River had been ousted as pack alpha of his old pack, River reluctantly concludes life in Cascade city might be safer.

However, tensions within the pack soon escalate when they’re forced to all live in the apartment rented by Jax, the human lover of David, the pack’s second in command. Knowing he needs money to buy better and bigger accommodation for his pack, River disappears for a few days and returns with a bag of gold chips he’s sniffed out from the Cascade River near his old pack grounds.

Coyote shifter Foster’s true mate has made his presence known, but when the coyote alpha finally shows himself, Foster is faced with a difficult decision. Stay with the werewolves and risk his mate’s unhappiness, or leave those he’s come to love as family?

Meanwhile, David continues to want to submit to Jax while being alpha to his beta mate, Brooks. Tension in the threesome grows as Jax’s reluctance to take the bite turns into flat-out refusal. Can their relationship survive this as well as Brooks pregnancy and David’s hyper-protectiveness of his werewolf mate?

When Josiah suggests the pack admit rogue werewolves, River’s desire to please his omega mate wars with his responsibilities to his pack as he questions past decisions and Josiah’s influence on them. Will history repeat itself, leading to the downfall of the newly-formed Cascade City Pack?

A New Beginning by Rebecca James follows an established cast of characters from her River Wolf Pack series. Anyone who enjoyed those stories will be able to pick up from there and enjoy the way the journey continues.

I have not read the River Wolf Pack books, however, and I found these storylines a bit difficult to follow. The story is written from several different characters’ points of view, changing with each chapter. Several storylines take place at the same time and each is rich with history…history which would have made reading this book as a standalone much easier.

If I were to describe this author’s style, I’d say her stories resemble a soap opera where several snippets of scenes take place, are left off, and then returned to in a cyclical fashion. While the different lines intersect, there are several which must be tracked as a reader. Not knowing the history of these characters, it took me a good deal of time to grasp what was happening and who everyone was in relation to everyone else.

But that wasn’t really what struck me as the greatest challenge in reading this book. As I moved through the initial chapters I thought, this author has chosen to structure their book in such a way that it will take time for the plot to emerge. Unfortunately, this emergence never really occurred. There were one or two moments of excitement towards the end, where I thought, oh, this could be pretty cool, but they wrap up very quickly.

By the time I got to the epilogue, I could recognize how the author was setting up several storylines for the next installment. There was one particular nugget of a plot insinuation that seems quite interesting, but if the style follows the format of this particular book, I fear I will read another story that ultimately watches characters interact but lacks any significant conflict.

Not a winning read for me. If you are into werewolf stories, which I am, I would start with the River Wolf Pack series of books before reading this installment in the new series. Had I experienced the backstories of all these characters, I think I’d be giving a very different review.

REVIEWED FOR LOVE BYTES

A New Beginning is the first book in the new series Cascade City Pack by Rebecca James. Although you could start out with this book if you are new to this author my recommendation would be to first read the River Wolf Pack series as that is where the story starts. In that previous series we were introduced to River and his mate Josiah – we followed there ups and downs as they tried to introduce the werewolf way of life to humans. Sadly, we saw it all go wrong and River was ousted as pack alpha. This new series picks up with River, Josiah and the faithful few who left the old compound with them as they try to navigate their new life and learn how to live in the city.

Life isn’t easy for this small band of wolves and River is really struggling to keep things together. They have no money, they are living on top of each other in small apartment and River’s increasing lack of trust with anything human is causing problems between him and his mate. He is feeling unconfident in his roll and those feelings lead him to think he is failing his pack – this River is definitely not the confident man we met in First Omega.

River and Josiah aren’t the only ones having problems. Jax, Brooks and David’s relationship looks set to implode. I like the complications that come with these three guys but when Brooks becomes pregnant David’s alpha tendencies come to the fore and Jax is pushed to the side – for a human that refuses to take the bite and become a member of the pack this doesn’t leave him many options. Although Jax has a new role at work before the story ends and his role within in the series looks set to continue I was personally frustrated that the three men didn’t sort things out.

Foster finds his mate, Josiah and the pack build an omega den and the pack continues to grow as more babies are born and a few rogues are permitted to join. I like this group of wolves and I’m glad their story is set to continue in a new series and I am already looking forward to the next book in the series.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

The base of the story begins with River, the former Alpha of the River Wolf pack. He and his mate, Josiah (a half human) were ousted due to fear and unrest. They and the others head off to find a place to form a new pack of their own. Strife and tragedy nearly break them, and they realize they’ve got no choice but to move to the city.

Since this is the first in what will be a new series, Rebecca James uses this book to let you get to know the men/couples who will make up the Cascade City Pack and what they have to face in order to make their new lives work in their new surroundings.

I loved all of these characters, with the exception of Jax, and even he is a well written character with his own reasons for being the way he is. Each couple has a unique relationship and have their own roles to play in this new pack. The Alphas are take charge men who do what they can to take care of their mates and their expanding families. The omegas are nurturing and are often the voices of reason when things start to get out of hand. They’re all loving and sexy, and they all complete each other.

A New Beginning by Rebecca James

Rating: 4 stars
I enjoyed this spin-off of the River Wolf Pack series way more than I did the original series. I liked the dynamic of the new pack and found their struggles finding a place to settle more interesting. The book kept me interested throughout and left me wanting to continue the series.

4.5 Stars ~ When I finished reading 'Third Mate', the final book in the 'River Wolf Pack' series, I was sad to imagine that I would never again get a chance to see River, Josiah, their pups, and the rest of the pack that left with them when River was ousted as alpha. Imagine my surprise, and delight, when I saw that the author planned to continue their story with a new series. I will admit to being somewhat wary after reading the blurb because it sure sounds as if there are a lot of different storylines, and I didn't want to be confused.

I felt so bad for River. His pride and self-worth have taken a beating, even before they left his former pack, but being attacked by the Turned while looking for a new home, and losing four members of his pack (five if I count Xavier who disappeared after his mate died), have left him with so much remorse and self-doubt. He hates moving into the city, and all of them staying in Jax's apartment is too close for comfort. River disappears one night, scaring Josiah half to death, and when he returns, he has gotten the money to buy the old plantation he and Josiah looked at, giving the pack a new home. All the problems aren't solved, however.

A ScatteredThoughtsandRogueWords Review. This review can also be found here.

River and his group of werewolves find themselves in Cascade City after wandering about trying to find a new place for themselves. But things are far from pleasant, for one, they have no place to stay and River’s refusal to accept help from humans could very well spell their downfall.

Meanwhile Josiah wants to help rogues once again though he is aware that his mate might be less then open to the idea given how the last time they took in rogues, it ended with them being ousted from their own pack.

While Jax, David and Brooks are battling all new problems... Brooks is pregnant and no one knows for sure if the baby is David’s or Jax’s but if that didn’t make things complicated enough, David’s wolf is being obsessively protective of Brooks during his pregnancy to the extent that he perceives Jax as a threat. What will these new developments mean for these three, will they manage to make it through together or will the strain of things make something give way?

This book just about killed me with the roller-coaster of emotions it had me on. This book is sooooo good. I mean books in this series truly just seem to get better with each new book. Hats off to the author for doing an excellent job.

This book is a sequel to the Third Mate which is the third book in the River Wolf Pack series and you can read this book even if you haven’t read Omega Arrival though that is also one awesome book.

The moment I finished this book I wished I could read it again for the first time. It was just so good and gave me the worst book hangover in recent times and urgh... just can’t wait for the next one. I read this book in a single sitting and I think what I loved the most about this book was that it was lengthier than its predecessors which meant that I was going to get extra time with all my favourite characters.

This book mostly follows David, Jax, Brooks, River, Josiah and Foster and is also told from the perspective of five of these six characters. I truly believe that the multiple POVs really work for this book because people have different priorities. Particularly in this book River is more concerned with getting the pack on track and David is concerned with Brooks’ pregnancy so when the perspective shift it’s just a new way of looking at the problem while simultaneously giving you another POV and storyline. Also the fact that you get to see all the important things happening in your beloved characters’ life is a definite plus point. There are two scenes in this book where the conversation between Jax and David happens off page and that really irked me out because those conversations were just something that I wanted to know so badly but since the book was at that time being told from River’s perspective I was out of luck, but this also drove home the point that had this book been from a single perspective I would have missed out on so much that was happening in other characters’ lives.

This book just has an amazing story to tell. The pack is finding it hard to adjust to the city but just when everything seems down in the dumps, River comes through for his pack. River and Josiah’s storyline in this book is focused on restoring the pack to its former glory. Someone makes this observation about River and Josiah in the book that while they might fight they always find a way to make things right. Also I loved how the author approached the problem of River worrying about the fact that his mate had too much of a sway over his decisions, I mean this was the best way to solve the problem by making River see the truth and realizing that in a way it is awesome that there is someone there to help him and find a way through problems even ones where you wonder if he might be one. I loved how Josiah comes through for River in this book, it was amazing. Their relationship was a bit worrying at the starting of the book given the pressure they were both under but by the end I was simply amazed.

Foster has a short story line in this book which wraps up very quickly when he finds his true mate. I really don’t know what the author plans to do with Foster’s character in the future but I for one didn’t mind him being gone all that much for one because that meant he was with his true mate, though I loved how the author handled the goodbyes.

Now coming to the very best part of this book which is undoubtedly the relationship between David, Jax and Brooks. I love how the author writes these three and their relationship as something effortless. I loved the implication that Brooks was scared of loving Jax because he knew that while David would never leave him Jax could, which made him guard his heart a little around Jax which made me wonder if that is what Jax did with Brooks as well because the whole reason he wanted David to mate was so that David wouldn’t be alone when Jax left but this isn’t something explicitly stated in this book and that is because this book doesn’t offer Jax’s perspective. I really want a book from his perspective; in fact I need it, considering everything that happens in Jax’s life in this book I really wish the next book in this series would feature him in a starring role. For all I care it could be entirely from his perspective. But while Brooks and Jax are guarding their hearts around each other, David and Jax have kind of already committed to misery when they fell in love with each other fully well knowing that it may someday lead to a world of hurt. I simply loved David and Jax and their relationship in this book. There are two scenes that particularly stand out for me and these were two such amazing scenes, that they took my breath away and then that fact that was revealed in the epilogue seems to promising much more, hopefully. I just can’t wait for the next book because I can’t wait to know where David and Jax’s story is going to go from here.

Amazing amazing book. If you have been loving this series this book is one to be devoured and for people who haven’t gotten on the bandwagon yet this series is simply amazing.

Ok I think the Author, tried to fill too much in this book, Even though River and Josiah are the main Character in this book all of the pack could be considered main characters because we learn all of the pack members' stories. While I applaud the fact that she put it all in one story rather than three or four books. it did lead to a story that rambled all over. I am thinking the story could have been more cohesive and better if it was split up.

It’s so good to see these guys again. And see them all together. This is a good story and segue into the new pack, but it doesn’t come without much change and super heartaches. This is the story of River’s new pack, Cascade City.
River has been doubting himself for a long time. He’s wondered in the back of his mind for a long time, if the old pack was right and he was letting his omega coerce his mind too much. And now it seems to be the same in this new pack. They’ve barely survived, and all haven’t. Thanks to the turned, some didn’t make it and some are on the run from grief. But River finally found a way to make things better for them. And Josiah has found some omegas and ways to help at the Congress again. Much to River’s dismay. Jax feels it’s time for him to leave, and when something bad happens, he knows it’s time to go. Some omegas are having hard times giving birth and things are changing for good and bad. And the tension is coming to an all time high. Especially when a rogue alpha comes along looking to take back his ‘property’ and David overhears a new group trying to take down werewolves. And River is wondering again, did they make the right decisions when they left and with what they’re doing, or were they wrong from the start?
Again, the story is told from different viewpoints and I love that. I love to see what everyone in the pack thinks and feels about what’s going on. And it’s a hard one. They all want so much to succeed, but after all they’ve been through with the humans before, they are all scared. And who can blame them. Not to mention, that after being in the wild for so long and dependent only on themselves, they are a bit naive about some things in the human world. But it’s even harder when River is doubting everything and hearing even now that others think he depends too much on Josiah’s opinion. And in some cases I could understand why. Josiah has only been thinking about the good of the pack and others, but these werewolves are stubborn when it comes to change, and because of it, it caused this big breakup in things and the huge tension that is still going on even now. But it’s more than that. I feel for the pack members. Some have lost mates and are struggling to cope. Some know that things aren’t working and are moving on. But it’s still the humans that want to wipe out werewolves that are making everyone wary. Despite the progress that’s being made with new leadership, there are still those that don’t want change. Just like most of the werewolves. It’s a huge bone of contention. And I hope somehow that things can get worked out soon.
Knowing how some of this has led to other things, I’m anxious to see how the next book is going to go. It’s going to take a lot to get things where they want them, but hopefully soon something will break loose and fall into place.

As always, this author brings her A-game. I am in awe of the complexity of her stories. There are no easy fixes, no rote, mindless 'mate, mine' pack dynamics. The characters frustrate me, make me smile, make me teary eyed, make me hot lol. I even find myself irrationally annoyed with them, even when I know their actions/concerns are valid (I found that happening with Josiah in this book). I knew why he was doing the things he did, but they still kind of grated at times.

I love all the couples fairly equally but my favorite storyline will always be David, Jax and Brooks. My poor babies! After reading comments from the author, post Book 3, that some readers didn't like Jax, I would like to commend her for not assassinating his character, and for keeping him true to form. I can understand some readers' frustration with Jax, but I absolutely get his actions as an independent thinker and a dominant human in a pack of werewolves. The juxtaposition of his love for his mates vs his desire to remain human really enriches the story, and this book explored that perfectly. I love how the author makes solid arguments to support each point of view. Even as I found myself agreeing that yes, River may be too readily influenced by Josiah, it helped Brooks' position that maybe that is why David didn't mind submitting to Jax...because of the human variant. And really, I think if Jax ever does take the bite (and for some reason I'm envisioning him having to do that as a last ditch effort to save his life), I don't think he will present as a beta cause there is nothing beta like about that man *fans self*

I cannot WAIT to see where the author goes with this spinoff. A+

This book is the continuation of two other series from this author and while it isn't required, reading those first gives more insight into the characters. This is the story of River's pack as they find their way to Cascade City and work to settle their place. We get to see the way the relationships change and grow for each couple/throuple in the pack and how they learn to work together once they are able to find a home.

Be ready for laughs and tears and the need to smack a wolf or two as these men grow as a pack. I enjoyed watching River begin to trust his instincts again and, as much as I love David, he seriously needs a smack every so often. As the pack grows and changes, the men begin to evolve with their mates and friends while keeping them all safe from rogue wolves and humans alike.

A great read when you can give it your full attention as there is a lot going on. This pack is totally worth it!

I read the Cascade City Pack all in a binge. It was so good. I like that it’s about every man in the pack, they each have their own story and throughout, they get highlighted to help the story keep flowing.
A New Beginning was a great start, I loved the idea of this little group creating a new pack and figuring out how to live much closer to humans than they had ever been. I love the relationship between Josiah and River, two men from different walks of life and meshing them together. I also love Jax, Brooks and David and their relationship was so new and tense. It was enjoyable to watch all of them build their lives and pack. The story was super hot, sexy, fast-paced. Every chapter was about a different man and there always seemed to be something happening. I love mpreg and shifters and the dynamic between alphas, betas and omegas. It was hot, super sexy and an enjoyable read. I definitely recommend it.

This is the first book in the new River pack/Cascade City Pack .

This was a great read it was good too see what happened to River and the rest of the pack mate's that left with him I'm so sad about the pack members that didn't make it to Cascade City . But it's nice to see how everyone is getting along especially as the plot starts to get to it's conclusion . We will now be able to find out about the terrible people behind the attacks on the werewolves hopefully they will be stopped sooner rather than later . It's also great to see the omegas from the Graycoast series from before they left Cascade City . And my heart is broken for David and Brooks who have too watch Jaxs sacrifice so much in order to keep them safe not only did Jaxs have too sleep with the enemy he went and married him too that's harsh . I also hope that we get to find out what happened to Nick and his baby can't wait to read the book in this series .

A New Beginning by Rebecca James is the first book in the Cascade City series. In the paranormal shifter romance, there is angst, steam (even some mmm interactions) and the fascinating world of pack dynamics. There are dangers uncovered in the book that seems like it will carry over into books that follow in the series that has my anticipation ramped up.

The story is well written, interesting characters and entertaining scenes. I really appreciate that I got to hear from multiple characters' point of view and get a very full view of life in the new pack and how shifters/werewolves work in this universe. I can not wait for the next books and continue this saga.

This was a really great start to this series! I loved the world building and building a pack. It was fascinating to get to read about all of it. These characters also were a joy to read. I wanted to know as much about them as I could. I am so happy to see there is more in this series because I definitely wanted more after finishing this book! Because I want more of this world and more of these characters I just want more. Though I definitely will go back and read the other series since this is a continuation of the world. Might be good to read the previous series before this one but I also enjoyed this story a lot without having read that series but I think I’d enjoy it more having read that series and know more about these characters.

It was incredibly interesting to be privy to the inside story of how a pack moves to a new home and develops its relationships, rules and survival strategies, rather than entering into a story of a pack that already has that figured out. This felt very much like a western story of the pioneers moving into a new area, learning about the customs and establishing relationships with the Native Americans both friendly and hostile and everything that goes into settling a new land. The characters were well developed, the suspense about who to trust and some strange things that are going on was expertly handled and it definitely enticed me into reading the rest of the series to find out more.

Since leaving their old pack to have a new start, River and his pack have had a lot happen. There were quite a few story lines going on this time, and the biggest was the David/Jax/Brooks trio. I thought that since However, new characters were introduced, and along with those already known, some characters would disappear for several chapters. I think because there was so much going on, this story wasn't as tightly written as previous ones. There was a lot to get through.

The is the start of a whole new series thou you should probably rea the River Wolf Pack first. River is an Alpha wolf shifter who takes his human mate and a group of other shifters to start a new pack. There is danger as some of their group dies when they are attacked. The story is well written, with angst, some steamy times and angst. Really enjoyed getting to know these new characters. Cannot wait to see what is in store for the rest of the pack.

Enjoyable start to a new series. I have not read the previous series that spawned this one, so I felt a little like I was missing some of the background, but I loved River and his packmates as they look for a new home. It's not smooth sailing. There are threats, trouble and tragedy. It's hard knowing who to trust, and River takes very seriously his responsibilities to bring his followers to a new and better place. This book leaves some questions open which I assume will be addressed in future books.

I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

This book continues from a previous series but it won't confuse the reader too badly if you haven't read it. I didn't realize it at the time but I had not read the previous books. With that, the writing and story in this book will have you at the edge of your seat at times. River is an alpha that is simply trying to find a new place for his pack to live. This will not be easy nor will the pack remain unscathed.

This is heavy!!

If you’ve read the previous series then you are familiar with the world. This is a deeper more complex look while still connecting them. While there are some happy moments and sexy times, there is still some darkness and danger. Human and werewolf lives are still on the line and tension is high between the two. Hopefully we will see more resolved through this series.

New series

Starting over is a daunting task when you have to leave everything and everyone you've known your whole life behind and try to assimilate into a completely foreign world while trying to hide your existence.
This story is a robust storyline encompassing all pack members and filled with angst, action, drama, and pack dynamics and politics.

This is my first ever Rebecca James' book and I enjoyed it a lot. As a huge fan of paranormal stories, the story of Cascade City pack caught me since the beginning. The plot is complex and the intrigue and all the angst situations involving all the wonderful characters kept me a the end of my seat the whole time. Adding romance and hot scenes to all the above rounded up a great reading.

IMHO, this was one fantastic, fascinating, make-me-shed-tears-of-both-joy-and-sadness, poignant, bittersweet, raw, gritty, gripping, emotionally charged, heartbreaking, heartfelt, grab-you-by-the-feels, amazing, and totally awesome start to a marvelous series. It had me hooked from the very first page, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Love for Cascade City Pack

Rebecca James is an inventive, amazing writer. I love her werewolf series and the way it follows the whole pack and not just two main characters. She has a way of making her books seem like a TV series that you can't get enough of. I'll continue to devour all of her books, and so should you.
