When an EMP struck the U.S. and rendered all electronics instantly useless, Andrea, Lexie and Sarah's lives changed forever. Their struggle for survival revealed surprising hidden strengths--but also weaknesses. Now, banded with other survivors, they hope for a temporary haven. But with no rule of law, and surrounded by foreign invaders and fellow Americans gone rogue, no one is safe.
Andrea is determined to marry Roper—but first he must return alive! Lexie wants to marry boyfriend Blake, the brilliant, handsome science-geek, but a terrible accident threatens her hopes. Sarah would rather hide than fight—if only peaceful resistance was enough!
Pushed to survive, resistance and will power must give way to DEFIANCE. But do the girls and the other survivors have what it takes to defeat the enemies who want them dead?
She writes YA Suspense/Apocalyptic fiction as L.R. Burkard, not only to keep expanding boundaries for her readers, but to explore deeper themes. Between books, she homeschools her youngest daughter, preferably while wearing pjs and with her feet up.
I must say that I was on the edge of my seat waiting to read Defiance. Books One and Two in the Pulse Effex series blew me away and I just had to see how it all turned out in this final installment. Linore Burkard did not disappoint. I was so caught up in these characters, that at times I found myself praying for them...and they're just characters! Not only does this series give you a great storyline, it also gives you invaluable information concerning an EMP. In this third book in the series, Linore wraps everything up nicely, with new twists and shock moments. Ending it all on a good note...leaving the reader satisfied. Sarah, Lexie and Andrea will be with me for quite some time. Their stories have touched me and has made me more aware of the dangers of this world. May God bless America. Yes, it's fiction....but it could be a reality.
Seven months ago an EMP knocked out the electric grid causing all technology to quit working. It was in the middle of winter leaving people to fight for their life. All of America was affected, along with parts of Canada. Cars would not work, computers and cell phones were down, and the food was running out.
`Defiance` is a science fiction/mystery novel written by author L.R. Burkard. It is the third novel in the Pulse Effex series. There is a who's who at the beginning so if the reader hasn't read novels one and two they will be acquainted with the characters. Which I like because some series novels leave you hanging as the reader tries to figure out who is who.
From the start of the novel, there was gripping suspense, good character development, and I was mesmerized by the writing. The overall question seems to be, `How can one still believe in God after seeing the devastation of so many people?` With faith, hope, and charity!

I enjoyed this new book in the Pulse series. It was great to see what was happening to all the people I've come to know. Lexie, Andrea, and Sarah are strong, brave young women. They and their families are trying to survive a pulse disaster that left the country without electricity and all of the modern conveniences. Thankfully, each one has found a place to belong and family to stand with as they all try to go on with their lives. It takes a lot of work and a lot of faith to make it through these trying times and sometimes they are faced with some hard tasks and their families aren't exempt from disaster. I'm amazed at all the things they have to do to survive, growing their own food, hauling water for daily needs, searching for edible plants in the woods, taking care of farm animals that provide eggs and milk and labor for the many things they need. They also must defend their homes. Meanwhile, Lexie and Andrea are growing up and falling in love with young men that are helping their families survive. It's all an intense story, especially Sarah's story, as she and her brother and their new family fight to survive against an enemy determined to steal their livelihoods and their home. You can't help but root for all of them as they fight to live on. It's a beautiful story that I highly recommend! Read all three books in the series, so you get all the details of the families and you get to know them and how they survive with hope for the future.
An incredible, action packed finale! This has been such a thought-provoking saga. I feel like I've been on a journey with each one of these characters and now "normal" is something that means no electricity, no running water, and no letting your guard down. Ever. I appreciated the different levels of preparedness represented in the series, as well as the distinct voices of each character. I felt like I was there with them, sometimes cheering them on, and other times trying to talk some sense into them! (Some arguing with my computer screen may have occurred!) And what a climactic ending! If that bit with Sarah & Richard doesn't get your heart pounding, you need to check your Pulse! (see what I did there?) ;) Overall a very enjoyable and engaging read - one that will leave you thinking and wondering... Are you ready for the Pulse?
Since the moment I finished Resilience, the second in the Pulse Effex trilogy, I have been looking forward to getting my hands on Defiance. It did not disappoint. Every book in the Pulse Effex series hooks your from the very first scene and keeps you turning pages. The series crackles with tension as you get to know three ordinary teens thrown into an extraordinarily terrifying reality. Strap in and experience the Pulse as each girl and their families fight for survival, and cling to God in the middle of chaos. Even though this series is considered YA, I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys an engrossing read. Gritty, intense, and riveting, this is a reading experience that won't be easily forgotten.
Defiance was a page turner! I stayed up all night reading the third installment of Burkard's Pulse Effex series. If you haven't read Pulse and Resilience, you'll want to grab them quickly. Although, I'm far from a young adult, Defiance's characters were engaging and made me care about what happened to them. You can't go wrong delving into this book or the other two!
The third book in the Pulse EFFEX Series continues the stories of Lexie, Andrea, and Sarah. The format is similar to the first book except three young men also share some of their experiences as well. Richard, Sarah’s brother, has been part of the story from the start but we only heard about him as Sarah shared what he was doing. Now they alternate telling about their experiences living with Tex and Angel as the four try to fight off multiple attempts of marauders to break into their house and steal what they have. Meanwhile back in Ohio at the Martin family compound, the excitement continues as Jared and Roper go out in search of supplies to make explosives to be used to defend the compound from being taken over by foreign mercenaries and others. The action and suspense are intense on both fronts. The story is unlike anything we have ever faced as a nation. The book probably will receive varied reactions as some have been preparing for years for such an event as the one that occurred in the first book. Others cannot imagine anything like these events ever happening. Probably many will find themselves somewhere in the middle, realizing disaster might happen but hoping it never does, at least not in their lifetime. Even as the readers consider what they would do if something like this took place, one point is quite clear. We will all die one day and what we each do about that is far more important than being prepared for something that might happen. I appreciate that the author places a strong emphasis on prayer and living for Christ. I received a complimentary ARC of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
Defiance, book 3 in the Pulse Effex series by L.R. Burkard, is a high-climactic page turner much like the preceding two books in the series. A young adult novel based on the premise that an electromagnetic pulse from the sun has wiped out all electronics in North America, Defiance follows the lives and struggles of several young people as they fight to survive the changed world they live in.
I loved this series and will recommend it to my 16 year old daughter. It's a great premise to encourage teens to consider what life might be like without phones, electronics, and TV. It also provides a brutal look into what desperation can do to normal people.
The only criticism I would make is that I don't believe that the teens portrayed in the series are given enough credit as far as intellect or maturity in the face of an apocalyptic event. I have been all over the world on disaster relief trips and I can tell you that the teens and children you meet have been through an "instant grow up" occurrence. You don't see the selfishness and boy crazy silliness that is portrayed here. I didn't feel it was fair, to dumb down the characters, especially since the target audience is teens. I would have preferred to have stronger, while still realistic, character and spiritual growth happen over the 3 books.
Rarely do I find myself drawn into the life of characters in a book. But Linore does just that! I am amazed that I found myself, a Pastor of a small Church, loving a novel written primarily for teenage girls. I had the hairs on the back of my neck standing at attention more than once, I found myself happy and angry at various times because of what was happening! I'm surprised my Kindle didn't crack from the grip I had on it at times! Linore also does an excellent job of adhering to Biblical truths and weaves the Gospel message throughout this great book! There are also many practical preparedness examples as well! When I started reading this book last I found myself overwhelmed by the desire to read the first two again! So I did! I don't believe you will be disappointed in reading this series! I just hope there are more to come!
When you start one of L.R. Burkard's books, you get sucked in quickly and the outside world fades away. You feel like you could recognize each of her characters if you ever saw them on the street. The books are clean, no profanity, yet deal with real possibilities. Imagine if an EM pulse did hit the US and suddenly all tech was basically useless. She does a fantastic job showing how teenagers and others survive. It's easy to care about the characters and the plot is fast-paced. Although there are many different voices, she does such a wonderful job making each unique, telling them apart is no problem. If you like YA Suspense/Apocalyptic fiction, this is definitely a series to check out! Get your own copy here: http://amzn.to/2rnmddh
Defiance is book three in the Pulse Effex series. The series has followed three teen-aged friends after an EMP has taken down the electrical grid in the United States. It details how they live and survive in a world that has gone mad.
This book picks up where Resilience left off and brings the reader along to a satisfying end to the series. It's a set of books that make you think about what it takes to live through difficult times, both physically and spiritually. You will be challenged in your faith as you read this series.
You won't want to put it down.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book. A favorable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
This series is awesome! I truly enjoyed it and had a difficult time putting it down. All of the characters made you feel like you knew them personally. The writing and the information on how to survive in a world that goes totally crazy was very enlightening. It really makes you stop think how would you survive??? By the grace of God, trusting him like never before! Planning ahead would help as well. Give your heart to Jesus now! This Covid 19 should teach us something about how mean and crazy people become when there is just a little insanity happens. Great series!
Defiance by L.R. Burkard is the third installment in the Pulse Effex series. The story follows three different girls; Andrea, Sarah and Lexie. Each have their own battles to fight after an EMP pulse knocks out the world as we’ve come to know it. They must contend with murderers attacking at will, no law, no electricity, no running water and their inner battles with self. I found the story line interesting but it was hard to keep up with the different character views that the author kept switching between.
I've read "Pulse," "Resistance," and now "Defiance" and enjoyed all three. The premise of this series is something I knew nothing about, so this has been educational as well as entertaining for me.
Each scene is realistic and the characters come alive as they face the darkest hours of our nation's history.
I highly recommend this series for any Christian who is interested in end time events and what potential challenges lay ahead.
Kudos to Burkard for her work and skill that makes this book and this series so good.
People become more desperate as time passes after the EMP. I loved the first book in the Pulse Effex series but this (third) book seemed to drag even though it had lots of action. It included some amazing ideas for what could happen and ways to overcome these events. I thought this was the last book in the series but it left some things hanging. The Pulse Effex series is Young Adult so perhaps that is why this book did not appeal to me as much. Younger people may love it. I received an advance e-book from the author. This is my honest opinion.
Excellent series.I wish it would continue but the author has already stated this is the last book of the series. The entire series is highly recommended.
Awesome book of survival, love and most importantly faith. I love how God used evil for good in their lives. I can't believe how quickly I read all three in this series, each one I had a hard time putting down. it was great to turn the tv off and get lost as the book came alive. I can only hope to see spin offs for Sarah, Andrea and Lexie.
