Dasharatha: The Story of Rama's Father

Rate this book
Dashratha, the prince of Ayodhya, was out hunting when he heard the sound of an elephant drinking water. Aiming his bow the prince shot in the direction of the sound. Tragically, the arrow killed a youth who was filling water in a pitcher for his old and blind parents. The anguished father cursed Dashratha that one day he would die grieving for his son. Dashratha's son was the valiant and unparalleled, Rama.

The initial scene of Dasharatha committing a grave sin by separating an old couple from their only son brought tears to my eyes. It's heart-wrenchingly sad seeing a parent losing their child. That is one of the saddest things that can happen to a person. For this mistake of his, he later has to go through the same feelings of despair and desolation as his beloved son Rama is separated from him.

The story was known to me and yet the depiction made me tear up all over again. Ramayana is rightly classified as an "Epic".
