The O'Donovans' affluent lifestyle is mostly unaffected by simmering tensions for Home Rule in Ireland. Change intrudes upon their lives when Grace O'Donovan welcomes her older sister, Deirdre, home from her year abroad. Grace expects to find her sister worldlier, more sophisticated after her sojourn in Europe. Instead, Deirdre is moody and listless. Unbeknownst to Grace, Deirdre is concealing a well-guarded secret. When their childhood friend and neighbor Cecil Sloane discovers Deirdre's hidden past, he demands her hand in marriage in return for his silence. A price so dear it shakes the O'Donovan family to its core, tests Grace’s courage and loyalty.

If you love historical fiction, Corrib Red is for you. It's set in Ireland during the 1880s, and the story is told in the first person by teenager Grace O'Donovan, the younger sister of Deirdre who has returned from her studies abroad in Switzerland. I enjoyed the opening of the story as Grace awaits Deirdre's arrival on the Dublin train. The station is complete with musicians and a cheering crowd to welcome home two Irish heroes: Charles Parnell and Michael Davitt. A quiet and sullen Deirdre, though, finally emerges from the train. Her life has changed drastically since Grace saw her last. From this point, a suspenseful story of secrets, romance, star-crossed lovers, intrigue, and tragedy begins to unfold for both of the beautiful O'Donovan sisters. Corrib Red is the second novel in Patricia Hopper's series that began with Kilpara, but both can stand alone. I know that this novel will be enjoyed by readers of all ages, but it would be especially appealing to Young Adults.

I do like historical fiction, especially one set in Ireland from which my ancestors emigrated. This story set in the mid 1880's continues the tale of the O'Donovan family told from the perspective of Grace, the younger daughter. Ms. Hopper gets the feel of Ireland, its beauty, its people, and the conflicts that are so much a part of its history. I look forward to reading the third part of the Kilpara saga.

I love this series! The characters are well developed and complex. The story lines are very interesting and not predictable, I can't wait to read the third book.
