Who was J. Christy Wilson Jr.? Many have never heard his name, but Christy Wilson's life had a ripple effect in modern missions. Read the first full biography of the humble, adventurous man of prayer who helped launch the Urbana missions conference, pioneered ministry in Afghanistan when others thought it impossible, mobilized hundreds of students toward world evangelization, and reintroduced the biblical idea of leveraging one's profession for the kingdom with the term "tentmaking." Riveting, uplifting, and frequently amusing, this book will challenge you to reconsider what is possible when we dare to yield to Christ and his purposes in the world.
A very respectable biography of a truly remarkable man. It was so interesting to be reading about this missionary to Afghanistan when the USA began to evacuate. It gave me an increased heart to pray for the people of Afghanistan, and especially the Christians in Afghanistan. The Gordon-Conwell chapters were interesting as well. Christy Wilson is greatly revered by all GC alumni I have ever met.
I bought this book after hearing an interview with Dr. Wilson’s daughter describing his missionary work in Afghanistan in the 1950s and 60s as I’m interested in Afghanistan. Once I started the book, it was hard to stop: great adventures; great answers to prayers; even great escapes! Besides gaining a new perspective on Afghanistan, I finished this book humbled and inspired and longing to know Jesus like Christy Wilson. Great biography of a truly modern day apostle.
This book came highly recommended by a church member and I wasn’t disappointed. Wilson was a pioneering missionary to Afghanistan in the 20th century, and he did so as a “tentmaker” when that route to missions was unheard of.
I walked away with a renewed desire to pray and plod. So many things happened through and around Wilson because he was faithful. I won’t spoil any surprises, but the book is full of the sort of missionary stories that astound and inspire.
This biography rang true to my recollections of Dr. J. Christy Wilson, Jr. He served as my missions professor in seminary. The book created sadness in my heart because I didn’t get to know him better while a student, but this book narrowed the gap. I learned much about the man, his heart and his service. I recommend this book
Valuable book about a key figure in bringing Christian witness to Afghanistan, developing the tent-maker model, organizing the first InterVarsity Missions Convention in Toronto, and inspiring missions enthusiasm in multiple generations of students and seminarians. The book excels in capturing Wilson's passion for evangelism and capturing the fans of his story; its shortfall is that it doesn't make him a real person with shortcomings along with his evident strengths.
