Bear to Have and Hold

Rate this book
Wedding planner Kayla Mackenzie specializes in creating spectacular destination weddings in exotic locations. But when her newest clients decide they want to get married in the wilds of Alaska, anxiety rears its ugly head. Sticking to cosmopolitan cities and tropical beaches allows her to avoid the one creature that scares her more than the words “prenuptial agreement.” But heading to the heart of werebear country means she’ll have to face her biggest fear.

Outdoor adventure guide Trent Black gets grouchier each day that goes by without finding his mate. But the last woman he expects to ignite his possessive instincts is a high maintenance human like Kayla. It’s bad enough she hates everything to do with the outdoors, but her obvious fear of bear shifters leaves him questioning his attraction. When fate steps in and strands them in a late winter blizzard, he has one chance to help her to overcome her fear and open her heart.

Warning! Sexy bear shifters, steamy love scenes, and a wild ride to the happily ever after! While you might run into some favorite characters, each book in the Kodiak Den series is a standalone featuring a different couple.

This is a great addition to this series which stars Alaskan were bear shifters finding their mates. Each story in the series can be read as a standalone, so don’t worry if this is the first one you’ll try, you don’t need to have read the others to appreciate this one. In this story, Kayla Mackenzie can’t believe her clients want to get married in Alaska. She’s used to arranging weddings in cities or warm, tropical locales, definitely not Alaska! She’s not only wary of the temperature but also because of a childhood experience, is definitely hoping not to encounter any werebears . . . . However, when were bear outdoor adventure guide, Trent Black walks into the dining room of her hotel, he recognises she’s his fated mate. With a great hostess suggesting he helps Kayla investigate possible locations for the wedding, life’s about to get interesting for them both - especially when the weather also decides to strand them in an isolated cabin during a blizzard!

This is a humorous, paranormal romance where preconceived ideas have instilled fear that needs to be overcome for love to find a way to enable them to achieve their HEA. The writing is engaging, the characters well developed and the plot involves the journey to healing and changing viewpoints. It is a delightful short but sweet read that I recommend to anyone who enjoys shifter romances.

I requested and was gifted a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion after choosing to read it.

The H is a shifter and the h has a great fear of shifters due to an incident when she was a child. Unfortunately she doesn't share enough before they fall in love. When the H shares with the h, she runs away and hurts them both. It all works out of course, it's very short and sweet.

Bear to Have and Hold is the fifth book in the Kodiak Den series, although it works perfectly fine as a standalone novel. Although the story does link in with past stories through characters, it is more so a case of seeing them where they are now rather than needing to know their story. It’s nice to have the background of the series, but not a necessity.

Although the fifth book is not my favourite in the series, it is a wonderful read. My favourite is Bear to Love, because that one blew my mind, yet this book has all the trademarks that make the series wonderful. Whilst short and sweet – a read you can easily complete in a single sitting – this one allows you to experience so many different emotions throughout your time lost in the book.

This book is all about healing, about overcoming the issues of the past. Throughout you’re aware that some kind of big event is to occur, and you’re crossing your fingers that the best of things will come from the event. It’s such a simple way of showing an individual changing their views, yet it is done beautifully. Instantly, you’re pulled into the lives of the characters and you cannot help but hope the best will come.

Without a doubt, it’s another wonderful addition to the Kodiak Den series. If you’re a shifter fan, then I certainly recommend giving this series a read. They’re short and sweet, wonderful little reads.

This was a really good story. I liked both Kayla and Trent and enjoyed their story. This is the first story I've read by this author and I liked it well enough that I plan to read more by her in the future.

Kayla is a woman that is nice but is a bit OCD in her habits. Kayla lives in New York and works as a wedding planner, organizing destination weddings around the world. Kayla hasn't had the best of luck with men and discarded any hopes for a relationship, focusing completely on her job and tidy life.

Trent is a werebear that lives in Kodiak, Alaska and works as a wilderness guide. Trent isn't majorly social but he does wish desperately that he could find his mate. Trent's bear has been more and more surly lately and Trent feels it's because he doesn't have his mate.

This story is short so I wont go into a lot of details that could ruin the story. I will say that Kayla isn't thrilled about this trip because she has an irrational fear of werebears (who are common in the Kodiak area) because of a traumatic situation involving a werebear when she was a child. But, the wedding is for her BFF's sister so Kayla is determined to do the job and do it well. When Kayla meets Trent, she doesn't realize what he is, she just knows she can't fight her attraction for him. Things go quickly but I did like the way things played out and in the end, Kayla and Trent are together and heading towards a HEA.

This was a really enjoyable story. I liked Kayla as a heroine...she wasn't annoying like I thought she'd be. It seemed to me that Kayla may have been a bit too over-dramatic in her reaction to finding out Trent is a werebear. Or, if it wasn't over-dramatic, then maybe she got over it a bit too quickly? Either way, I got a bit of whiplash from that part but I've never dealt with that type of trauma so maybe it can turn around that quickly. And this is a short story so there was only so much time for her turnaround anyways so it's not too difficult to suspend disbelief for that part (this was my only real complaint about the story). Trent was a real sweety and I thought he made a great hero. Overall, I really enjoyed the story and characters so I would recommend this story. :)

Title: Bear to Have and Hold

Series: Kodiak Den #5 (Alaskan Den Men)

Author: Amy Lamont

Genre: Paranormal Romance

BLURB: Wedding planner Kayla Mackenzie specializes in creating spectacular destination weddings in exotic locations.

Thoughts: Kayla is a sweet, but high maintenance chick who heads to Alaska to plan a wedding for her friend's sister. She immediately catches Trent's eye, and she winds up being his mate - unfortunately, however, she has major issues with werebears. I loved the premise of the book, and I even liked the authors writing style. My main complaint is really the length of the book and what that does to the whole story - for me, the book started off great and had a good flow to it. I became invested in the characters and the story. When it came to the climax of the story though it was like 'wham!', secrets are revealed, the end. The readers get a what seems like a lot of build up and then before you know it the book ends! I really wanted a longer book here. I was also left with lingering questions - for example, why is no one surprised about shifters? Why are werebears just accepted into society? This book is supposed to be stand alone, and if that's the case I need some more information! Since this is not book one in the series, I am assuming that I've missed something from previous books. The book sits solidly at about a C for me.

Short and sweet. The Insta-love was a little quick but it IS a short story. The circumstances of Kayla's childhood were tragic and sad and I'm not sure how I feel about the situation. Who was wrong, who was to blame. I wish they'd spent more time on that thorny issue. It felt too quickly glossed over.

Kayla was packing her bag while her friend, Ella, looked on. Kayla was a wedding planner, and her current job was taking her to Alaska! She was a bit nervous about this one. A tropical paradise was more to her liking! Wilderness and the great outdoors was definitely not her thing, most especially because it attracted bear shifters which she totally wanted to avoid!

Sitting down to breakfast the next morning, Kayla met the fishermen waiting for their guide. She started to relax – until a voice behind her caused a big reaction. When she saw Trent Black, looked into his dark brown eyes, she panicked and literally ran to her room to escape his presence. It wasn’t until she talked it over with Ella on the phone that she began to realize how much she wanted to get to know Trent. Her mother had run off with a shifter, but Trent wasn’t a shifter – right? -- and she wanted to get closer to him. He had offered to take her around to find a spectacular wedding site for Ella’s little sister’s wedding, so this was a perfect time to get to know Trent better.

The two of them went to a lodge deep in the woods and it started to snow. They decided to stay the night. After spending the night in each other’s arms, Kayla told him she hadn’t wanted to come to Kodiak at first. She had a bad experience involving a shifter and did not want to meet up with another anytime soon! His body went tense… what would happen when she found out the truth of who he was? Would she realize that he was her mate? Or would she let her fear overcome her and run from him and a love she would never find anywhere else?

The writing in this story was great! The pages just flew by as the reader got to know the personalities of the main characters. We get hints of a bad experience that Kayla had gone through which tainted her feelings about the wilderness. She needed something very special to turn those fears around. But could she find it in time? I highly recommend this book.

This was a sweet, sexy, heartbreaking, and healing story. That's a lot for such a short novella!

Kayla is a wedding planner from NYC. She's in Kodiak, Alaska to plan her best friend's little sister's wedding. She is not a fan of the outdoors, nor the werebear population reported to live there. She had a traumatic experience with a bear shifter when she was a child and it's colored her view of them terribly. Also, wrapped up in that same experience, was her mom leaving her and her father, so it's a big tangled mess in her heart and mind. She has no interest in falling in love, and losing control of her carefully planned life.

Trent is a bear shifter. He's also a nature tour guide in Kodiak, and he agrees to help Kayla scout locations for the wedding she's planning. He also knows from his first meeting with her, that she's his mate. He is thrilled for the chance to get to know her better, but he's dreading her return trip to New York.

Trent and Kayla's chemistry was strong, and I loved how drawn they were to each other. For how different they were, they found common ground easily. I really enjoyed the comfort they felt with each other from the first day.

I enjoyed this story, but it was a little more angsty than the others in the series, and I felt like I enjoyed the more lighthearted ones a little better. Also, I really would have loved an epilogue!

I really enjoy everything I've read by this author, and I'm looking forward to what's next!

Bear to Have and Hold: Kodiak Den by USA Today bestselling author Amy Lamont is Book 5 of the Alaskan Den Men series and a Paranormal Romance

City girl Kayla Mackenzie owns a wedding planning business that specialises in extravagant destination weddings and is reluctantly in Kodiak Alaska, bear shifter central, scouting locations. Kayla's been terrified of bear shifters ever since she saw her mother's bear shifter boyfriend shift. At breakfast proprietor Mrs. Begay tells Kayla that Trent Black is the perfect person to help her find an outdoor location. Bear shifter Trent is stunned when he comes face to face with his mate but she runs off when he joins her at breakfast. Kayla returns to the lodge after a day's search yields nothing. When Trent overhears the beautiful Kayla telling the proprietor that she plans to go deeper into the forest but is nervous about getting lost, he offers to take her. While scouting locations with Kayla, Trent learns that she's flying back to New York soon. Trent is now a man on a mission ... he has 4 days to convince her that they're meant to be together. The wary Kayla may be viscerally attracted to the hot Trent, but what happens when she finds out he's a bear shifter?

Bear to Have and Hold is funny, angsty and steamy. Amy Lamont paired an interesting story with likeable characters for a book that reeled me in. I highly recommend this book.

Amy Lamont's Best Kodiak Den Book Yet

I am voluntarily reviewing an advanced reader copy of this book, Bear To Have And Hold by Amy Lamont.

It's official, I have a new favorite bear shifter book! What a marvelous story. So much passion and sexual chemistry. The storyline is fabulous and the characters are perfect. I love Kayla's bestie, Ella. She is such a great friend. Everyone should be blessed with a friend like her in their life.

Kayla, a wedding planner, is in Kodiak, Alaska to find the perfect spot for a fairytale wedding. Shortly after arriving, she meets Trent and time stands still. Neither one can take their eyes off the other. Trent knows instantly that Kayla is his mate but she fights the attraction with everything in her and runs away. Kayla is so distraught, she almost packs up to leave but decides this wedding is too important to abandon. In her search for the perfect wedding spot, Kayla ends up with Trent as her scouting guide and finds that the more time she spends with him the more she has feelings for him. But, unbeknownst to Kayla, Trent is the one she fears most in the entire world, a bear shifter. How will Kayla react when she learns what Trent is? Will she accept him or rip his heart out and again run away, only this time for good?

I was given this book by the publisher and asked for an honest review.

3.5 Stars!

Welcome to Kodak, Alaska! Home to werebears and humans alike, this town sits in some beautiful country where the shifters outnumber the humans. Kayla is in town to plan a wedding for the ages for her younger sister's friend and get out again before things get messy, and she almost didn't make the trip due to a childhood trauma. On the other hand, Trent is an outdoor guide, mainly for fishing, hunting, hiking and camping, but one look at the newest guest at the Lodge and he's volunteering to show off some perfect wedding venues instead.

While this is book five in the series, it is a standalone book, and I feel like I'm missing some information. How is it that bear shifters are so commonplace and accepted? I really enjoyed the buildup and descriptions given throughout the book, and then the denouement it, and the book ended shortly thereafter. I would've liked more story. Ms. Lamont did a great job with her characters and I was definitely rooting for them both right from the beginning!

What a great story.

As I started reading this story and getting to know the characters I wondered if Wes and Whitney were really compatible. These two truly appeared to be total opposites. Wes was a serious person. He needed order in his life. He needed things planned out. It seemed to be worse with the PTSD he suffered from.

Whitney she was carefree and very happy go lucky. She was one that was spontaneous. She lived by the fly of her pants so to speak. Reading about her personality I could see she would be a person that could wear you out mentally.

As things started to uncover you can see that both Whitney and Wes need healing in some type of way. These two help the other see things in each other’s life that need changing. They find the help they truly need and this help with help their love blossom and grow.

Now let me tell you the author does not disappoint when it comes to the hot steamy parts. There is so much chemistry between these two.

It was a great book and glad I got a chance to read it.

Kayla Mackenzie is a wedding planner in a mission. Her best friend's sister is getting married & wants an outdoor wedding in Alaska. Kayla is apprehensive about the scouting trip because of some painful family history. She's happy with her best friend Ella & her cat. Once she's in Alaska, she meets tour guide Trent Black. The chemistry between them is hot, combustible & intense. How can they make it work with him in Alaska & her in New York? When she comes clean with her past, can they work past it?

I have never been interested in the Shape Shifter genre until Amy Lamont started writing them. I've been pulled into this series & have found I really enjoyed them. The shape shifting takes second place with the contemporary leading the way. My only complaint is that because this is a novella, it was too short!

I didn't read any other books in this series and I found out you really don't have to. Although I will be going back and reading them because this book hooked me. I easily followed and loved this book. I wish it would have been longer because the writing is so amazing I wanted more. There were parts the author could have easily added to make it more of a book instead of a short story. It was really well written and the characters came to life so it was sad to see it so rushed. This was a cute fun super fast read but I loved every second of it. If this would have been a little longer it would have been 5 stars for sure, but there were things that I wanted to know that didn't get answered, because of that it lost a star. Beautifully written and it comes to life off of the pages. Interesting story line, ideas, and characters. Very good book just too short for me.

I just adore the Alaskan Den Men series and Trent's story is one of my favorites!
A werebear who's yet to find his mate. He spends his days running outdoor adventures and spending as much time as he can outside and away from town.

Kayla comes to Kodiak to scout locations for her best friends sister's wedding she's planning.
She didn't want to come, wouldn't have for anyone else considering her past and her fear of werebears but she took a chance and that chance led her to Trent.

Just when things seem to be headed in the right direction she finds out who Trent really is and runs as fast as she can away from him, not explaining her fears. Trent in turn goes a little wild at losing the woman who is to be his mate.
Looks like it's all on Kayla to man up an fix it or lose the only man ever meant to hold her heart.

"I voluntarily Reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book." The storyline was perfect. Kayla and Trent are electric. The story starts off fast and just keeps on rolling. She needs to go to Kodiak to because her best friends sister is getting married. She wants to get married in Kodiak. Kayla needs to find the perfect spot. Trent is a bear shifter that is an adventure tour guide. He knows upon meeting Kayla that she is his mate. He offers to take Kayla to find the spot for the wedding and to let her get to know him slowly. After misinformation and bad memories from childhood make her run, the matchmaking innkeeper gets her back on track. At the end, love conquers all.,

Kayla is from New York and is planning her best friend’s sister’s wedding however she would so much prefer that it was a tropical destination rather than Alaska. She has never forgotten her experience as a child with a bear shifter and it scares her to this day.

Trent is a tour guide and he agreed to scout wedding locations with Kayla. From the moment he saw her she was calling out to the bear within him and knows that she is his fated mate.

Kayla is very attracted to Trent however due to her past she wants no part of love or a relationship. As they spend time together they become closer but will she ever be able to accept the fact that he is a bear shifter?

Although Kayla and Trent are opposites they complete each other and their chemistry is hot!

Kayla heads to Kodiak, Alaska to set up a destination wedding. She meets Trent Black. He recognizes her as his mate. She had a traumatic experience with a shifter taking her mom away when she was 10, so she is very wary of shifters.
They have an immediate connection. Trent is very sweet with Kayla.
This is the fifth book in the series and it was in this one that I became aware that the author created an alternate reality where shifters are known about by the general population. That was kind of a “huh” moment for me. In the other books it didn’t register because they were pretty much exclusively located in Kodiak. It seemed like you could have a remote place with something like that being generally known by residents but not outsiders. So to have it be something the general public knows was interesting.

3.5 stars

This story centers around Kayla, a wedding planner and Trent, a bear shifter and mountain guide. Kayla has had bad experience with bear shifters in the past, when she meets Trent, there is an instant attraction, however Kayla does not know about Trent's true nature.

This was a short and sweet read which is steamy when it needs to be. Both characters were likable and the book was well written. There was no drama thrown in for the sake of it, and it was a well paced story despite being a shorter story.

This was my first book by Amy Lamont, and I enjoyed it. Perfect for fans of shifter reads looking for a quick fix.

Bear to Have and Hold is a classic of story of girl meets boy and boy just happens to be a bear shifter. The story is a tale of acceptance and forgiveness. It is also about seeing things for what they really are.

I liked Kayla because she has faults but she's okay with them. And her best friend is not afraid to point them out. She is a successful business woman that is just going through the motions of life. She has her fears and she has to understand and overcome them.

I loved Trent. He is perfect for Kayla. He is an outdoorsman that lives his life and does more than go through the motions. Kayla learns a lot from him.

This book has a good heart to it. It was short but had good characters in it.

Bravo Amy! Fabulous job with Trent and Kayla's story! This couple is my fave by far!

Kayla witnessed a "tragedy" as a child and unfortunately it warped her thinking into adulthood. Enters Trent. Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome. He's everything Kayla has been saving herself for or at least she thought. Trent believes honesty is the best policy and he believes their love will conquer their differences.....

Kayla has to learn to deal with everything she learns from the love of her life. I love her innocence and blind acceptance of what she believes she saw as a child. She's carried around this misunderstanding for years. I love the reveal of her unfounded fears! Best scene in the story!

Five stars!

First off I voluntarily received this ARC and can truly say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. There was a heartwarming story here that bypassed the trauma that Kayla experienced as a child. Also, she doesn't see herself as the outdoorsy type and hated the idea of planning a wedding request for a rustic venue. Trent helped to change her mind about all of that. Falling in love isn't always about seeing things through rose colored glasses. It can get messy. Sometimes you need someone else to get you out of your own head. Kayla found others that could do just that. Trent is an outstanding character and love him as the BIG strong bear of a man (pun intended).

The series is well worth a read and I give it my full support for those who enjoy a good romance. Kudos to Lamont!

What a fun and opposites attract sort of book. You have Kayla who is a wedding planner who isn't big on nature or bear shifters forced to head to Alaska to plan her best friends sisters wedding. There she meet Trent who is the hot, rugged outdoor adventure guide who happens to make Kayla tongue tied whenever he walks in the room.

These two were fun to read about and watching them grow as a couple. I was a little surprised how easy she was to let Trent hold her hand and things like that when all she talks about is how much of an independent woman she was.

The book has a twist on why Kayla doesn't like bear shifters and it breaks my heart when she pushes Trent away because of it.

This book has heart and warmth and I'm very glad I read it.

Kayla Mackenzie is a wedding planner extraordinaire based in New York specializing in destination weddings. When she promises her best friend to plan her sister's wedding in the Alaskan wilderness she gets more than she bargained for going into were-bear country. That's when she captures the attention of Trent Black the resident outdoors guide and were-bear. Who would have thought Trent's mate was a city girl who despises everything outdoorsy and is afraid of were-bears based on a misunderstanding when she was a little girl? Will they ignore the explosive chemistry between them in favor of not even exploring the possibility of a relationship?

A sweet, sexy read

This is a fun, sweet, short paranormal romance with a clean freak, wilderness-phobe and a rugged, outdoor type bear shifter..not an obvious match made in heaven but these two opposites are destined to be together it would seem....

This is a well written story set in the wonderful backdrop of the Kodiak landscape..... the characters are not deep or particularly complex and indeed they do not need to be....this is a lighthearted, sexy read which provides a welcome escape from the reality of life...there is some angst and drama and a whole lot of protective werebear

A delightful and satisfying novella reviewed for Summer's Eve Reads.....
