About the author

Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad is an Indian writer and politician. He is the Chairman of the A.P. Hindi Academy; Professor in Hindi at Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, India, and is a former Rajya Sabha Member. He received the third highest Indian civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2003, followed by the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2010. The Government of India honoured him again in 2016 with the Padma Bhushan, the third highest Indian civilian award.

ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಮುಖಪುಟ ಮತ್ತು ಬೆನ್ನುಡಿಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿ ಈ ಕೃತಿಯು ಮಹಾಭಾರತದ ಘಟನಾವಳಿಗಳನ್ನು ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯ ಕಣ್ಣಿನ ಮೂಲಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯಿತು. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಖರೀದಿಸಿದೆ. ಅಂದುಕೊಂಡಂತೆ ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯ ಹುಟ್ಟಿನಿಂದ ಮಹಾಪ್ರಸ್ಥಾನದವರೆಗಿನ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಘಟನೆಗಳನ್ನು ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯ ಅವಲೋಕನದಂತೆ ಹೆಣೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಅನುವಾದಕಾರರು ಇದನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡದ್ದೇ ಕೃತಿ ಎನ್ನುವಷ್ಟು ಸಮರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಅನುವಾದಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ….


ತನ್ನ ಐವರು ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥಾಮನಿಂದಾಗಿ ಹತರಾದರು ಎಂಬ ಸುದ್ದಿಯು ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯನ್ನು ತಲ್ಲಣಗೊಳಿಸುವುದರ ಮೂಲಕ ಕೃತಿಯು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ತನ್ನ ಐವರು ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಸತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಇಷ್ಟು ದುಃಖಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವಾದರೆ ಒಬ್ಬ ಮಗನನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗದ ಗಾಂಧಾರಿಯ ದುಃಖ ಎಷ್ಟಿರಬಹುದು ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಅವಳನ್ನು ಕಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಅವಳು ಇಡೀ ಯುದ್ಧದ ಕುರಿತಾಗಿ ಆತ್ಮಾವಲೋಕನಕ್ಕೆ ಮುಂದಾಗುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಇಡೀ ಕುರುಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಸ್ಮಶಾನ ಸದೃಶವಾಗಿ ತನ್ನ ಗಂಡನನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುವ ಹೆಂಡತಿ, ತಂದೆಯನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುವ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಮಕ್ಕಳು, ಮಗನನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುವ ವೃದ್ಧ ತಂದೆ ತಾಯಂದಿರು ವಿಕಾರವಾಗಿರುವ ಹೆಣಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ರೋಧಿಸುತ್ತಾ ತಮ್ಮವರನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುವ ಬಂಧು ಬಾಂಧವರ ದೃಶ್ಯಾವಳಿಗಳು ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯ ಮನದೊಳಗೆ ಕಲಮಲವನ್ನುಂಟುಮಾಡಿ ಈ ಯುದ್ಧಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವಾದ ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ಅವಳ ಕಣ್ಣಮುಂದೆ ಒಂದೊಂದಾಗಿ ಸುಳಿದಾಡಲಾರಂಭಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಯುಧ್ಧಭೂಮಿಯ ಚಿತ್ರಣವನ್ನು ಓದಿದಾಗ ಬಹಳ ಸಲ ಗಂಟಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಏನೋ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಹಾಕಿಕೊಂಡ ಅನುಭವವಾಯಿತು.


ಸ್ವಯಂವರದಲ್ಲಿ ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯನ್ನು ಗೆದ್ದುಕೊಂಡು ವಾಪಾಸು ಬಂದು ಭೀಮಾರ್ಜುನರು ತಾಯಿಗೆ ವಿಶೇಷವಾದ ಭಿಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ತಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎಂದಾಗ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಸಮನಾಗಿ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳಿ ಕುಂತಿ ಹೇಳಿದ ಮಾತುಗಳು ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯ ಮನದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ಸಂಶಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಎಡೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಕುಂತಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಸ್ವಯಂವರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದು ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲವೇ? ಗೊತ್ತಿದ್ದೂ ಉದ್ದೇಶಪೂರ್ವಕವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದಳೇ? ತಾಯಿಯಾದವಳು ಅರಿಯದೇ ಹೇಳಿದ ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ಚಾಚೂ ತಪ್ಪದೆ ಪಾಲಿಸುವುದು ಧರ್ಮವೇ? ಮುಂತಾದ ಧರ್ಮ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಗಳನ್ನು ಕುರಿತಾಗಿ ವಿಚಾರ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ…. ಹೀಗೆ ಐವರು ಗಂಡಂದಿರು ಜೊತೆ ಸಂಸಾರ ಮಾಡುವಾಗಲೂ ಅವಳ ದ್ವಂದ್ವಗಳು ಸ್ತ್ರೀ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತವೆ. ತುಂಬಿದ ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವಳ ಮಾನಾಪಹರಣವಾಗುವಾಗ,ವನವಾಸದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವಳು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ದಿಟ್ಟ ನಿರ್ಧಾರಗಳು ಧಾರ್ತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರರನ್ನು ನಿಶ್ಯೇಷ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯ ಕೋಪ,ಅಸಹನೆ,ಸೇಡು,ಧೈರ್ಯ,ದಿಟ್ಟತನ, ಧರ್ಮದ ಕುರಿತಾದ ಜಿಜ್ಞಾಸೆಗಳು ಬಹಳ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿಬಂದಿದೆ. ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯು ಐದು ಜನ ವೀರರನ್ನು ಪತಿಯಾಗಿ ಪಡೆಯಲು ಏನು ಕಾರಣವಾಯಿತು? ಪೂರ್ವ ಜನ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವಳ ಈಡೇರದ ಅಭಿಲಾಷೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಏನಾದರೂ ಸಂಬಂಧವಿದೆಯೇ? ಮುಂತಾದ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಎಲ್ಲೂ ಕೇಳಿರದ ಕಥೆಯ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿದೆ…..


ಕೇವಲ ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯ ಮನದ ಭಾವನೆಗಳ ತಾಕಲಾಟವನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಬಿಂಬಿಸದೇ ಕುಂತಿಯ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ತುಮುಲಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಜೂಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯನ್ನು ಪಣಕ್ಕಿಟ್ಟು ಸೋತು ಮುಂದೆ ವನವಾಸವನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುವಾಗ ಪಂಚ ಪಾಂಡವರು ಅನುಭವಿಸುವ ಅಸಹಾಯಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಸಹ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಲೇಖಕರು ವಿವರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯ ಆಸೆ ಆಕಾಂಕ್ಷೆಗಳನ್ನು ಭಾವನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸದೇ ಅವಳೊಬ್ಬ ಸತಿಸಾಧ್ವಿ ಎಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸುವುದು ಎಷ್ಟು ಸಮಂಜಸ ಎಂದೆನಿಸಿತು. ದ್ರೌಪದಿ ಎತ್ತುವ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಧರ್ಮ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಕಲ ವಿದ್ಯಾಪಾರಂಗತರು ಸಹ ಉತ್ತರಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಫಲರಾಗುವುದು ಬಹಳ ನೈಜತೆಯಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿವೆ….


ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯ ದೈಹಿಕ ಕಾಮನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ಅವಳ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಅಬಾಲವೃಧ್ಧರಾದಿಯಾಗಿ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಮೋಹಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವಾಗ ಸ್ವಲ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸುತ್ತದ್ದರೆ ಉತ್ತಮವಾಗಿರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಕೆಲವೊಂದು ವಿಚಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪಲು ಬಹಳ ಕಷ್ಟವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇವಿಷ್ಟು ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತವಾದ ಅನುಭವವನ್ನು ನೀಡುವ ಕೃತಿ…

(ಫೇಸ್ಬುಕ್ ಮಿತ್ರರಾದ ಪ್ರಶಾಂತ್ ಭಟ್ ಅವರು ತಿಳಿಸಿದ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಮಲ್ಲೇಶ್ವರಂನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಂಗಡಿಗೆ ಹೋದಾಗ ಈ ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಖರೀದಿಸಿದೆ. ಕನ್ನಡವೂ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಹಲವಾರು ಭಾಷೆಯ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಕೃತಿಗಳ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಂಗ್ರಹ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ… ಆದರೆ ಅಷ್ಟು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ನಮಗೆ ಬೇಕಾದ್ದನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಬಹಳ ತಾಳ್ಮೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಲಾವಕಾಶ ಬೇಕು…… ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿಯು ಮಲ್ಲೇಶ್ವರಂನ ಮಂತ್ರಿ ಮಾಲ್ ಪಕ್ಕದ ಎಲ್ಐಸಿ ಕಟ್ಟಡದ ಮೂರನೇ ಮಹಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ)

The story of Mahabharata in Draupadi's point o view creates an attraction to read this book. Draupadi is the key character to make the twists and turns happen in this epic.
It is good to listen Mahabharata without making Arjuna, Krishna and Karna as the heroes of the story, He pointed out mistakes in all the characters especially Yudhistra. His commentary on Draupadi and other objects makes us to imagine easily.

Yarlagadda has given good reason for many events happening in this story like the reason for her love towards Arjuna.
The sufferings of Draupadi throughout the story is unclear from her point of view too. The author could have explained that too.


Yarlagadda's narrative style is not impressive to read out this with curiosity.It is somber and boring at many places. This may be because of viewing Mahabharata in different person's point of view.
on the whole it is a mix of both good and bad things.

Its an interpretation of the character of Draupadi. The writing ascribes virtues - almost eulogizes the character. In parts it is analytical but largely it perpetuates the myth.

The story is narrated from Draupadi's point of view. Interesting in parts, difficult to read in parts, this is a mixed bag.

Liked it in the beginning and the end :)

Wish the author gave more importance to her characterization, thought processes and feelings than descriptions of her beauty and sexuality :)

Still her role and reactions in key events was narrated neatly.

Yudhishtira is portrayed questionably. I don't think anyone can believe him as a selfish, possessive husband :)

Last chapter (Mahaprasthana) was astounding.

The relationship between two Krishnas (Draupadi is called Krishna too, based on her color) is interesting and surreal.

While I agree that Draupadi is believed as the woman born to fulfill her sexual desires, this Draupadi boasts of a lot more personality and character. Wish the author gave more importance to that :)

I read it on Malayalam translation of this telugu novel. Beautiful story with the great use of language.
