Love in Lenox #3

A New Shade of Summer

Rate this book
As an artist, Callie Quinn relies on inspiration to guide her wandering soul. This summer she accepts a short-term muralist job in her sister’s charming town to spend some much-needed time with her family. After meeting her nephew’s friend, Brandon, she’s eager to draw out his untapped artistic talents—however, it’s the boy’s straitlaced single father who could use a little color in his life.

Davis Carter may be the town’s favorite animal whisperer, but his experience is limited when it comes to understanding his preteen’s rebellious behavior. Desperate for a breakthrough, he follows the lead of a free spirit who claims to know the way into his son’s closed-off world. Soon, Davis isn’t the only one caught up in the hope of a new beginning.

Just as Callie considers trading her unattached existence for a life rich with promise and permanence, an unexpected visit from the past threatens to send her packing once again. Davis and Callie must learn to surrender their fears so they can find a love that will outlast the summer.

Great summer read!

Nicole Deese writes romantic relationships so dynamically and interesting.
I really like the characters she chooses to bring together. I'm always engaged!

Even though this is the third book, it felt like a standalone, so feel free to read out of order!

Have you ever wanted to be someone else? Don't get me wrong--I'm happy with who I am, but sometimes I wish I could be more carefree, outgoing, talented, and fun. When Callie blows into town with her bright red hair, wicked artistic abilities, and carefree bohemian attitude, Davis doesn't even know what's hit him. She has a way about her that draws people to her like moths to a flame and her confidence in herself brings a sense of peace to those around her. I want to be her...maybe for a day.

As a mom, I can only imagine how hard it would be to be a single parent as Davis is, but he is one great dad, even though he struggles finding that balance with a soon-to-be teenager. I adore Davis! He's hardworking, smart, sweet, and puts others needs above his own, even when it's not convenient or easy.

For him to find someone like Callie is extremely satisfying, but that relationship right there is not immune to problems. Through all of the conflicts, there are moments of chemistry, which takes this book to a deeper level. I loved every minute of it! I want to live in Lenox, OR (is it a real place?); I want to be friends with Callie and her sister, Clem; I want to take my dog and cat to Davis's vet practice; I want to associate with these people.

Ms. Deese is a very talented writing that draws me right into the thick of her books and leaves me with a book hangover--I honestly don't want to finish that last page because then it will be over.

Content: mild religious elements; mild romance

I desperately wish I could give this book more than the allowable 5 stars! I LOVED this book! I discovered Nicole Deese's work after she'd already written a few books and I've not completely caught up yet, but I can't wait to do just that. She is a tremendous author. She manages to capture the reader's heart from the very beginning, crafting characters that live on in your heart after reading the last word.

Told in 2 POVs, this story is full of emotion and depth, even the secondary characters. I felt as if I were indeed a part of the action and several scenes brought such joy to my heart, I gasped aloud. Truly, this is one for your keeper shelf and worthy of a re-read many times over. Just don't miss it.

After Davis was let down by Willa in the previous book of the series, I was so hoping that the author would give him his own story of finding love. And she did! And it is fabulous! I love how different Callie is and exactly what Davis and Brandon need. Her personality shines right off the page and yet has complexity woven in. Her connection to Brandon's artistic side draws him out which makes Davis take notice, in more ways than one. I loved how she was able to perceive people and their strengths, and communicate that to others. There are so many awesome nuggets in this book, but I want you to discover them for yourself! The chemistry between Davis and Callie is palpable and I loved how their romance budded naturally. Because Callie is so carefree in many aspects of her life, is seems that she is also free of fear, but her perceptions of herself and her innate characteristics are shaded by her father's choices and his words of legacy to her. Davis also has fears but he is an example to Callie in overcoming them by processing feelings of grief and anger through turning to God, allowing him to live life to the fullest. This book is full of light and humor, depth and compassion. Highly recommend!!!

Nicole Deese has done it again!! Another brilliant romance that had me swooning over her latest hero, Davis. He was a widowed father of a preteen son. The heroine, Callie was a free spirited artist who never wanted to settle down. The chemistry was sparked from the get go. It was fun watching things play out between the two. And, oh the sweet romance!! Awwww!! It was just so precious!! Needless to say, if you are a romantic at heart, you will love this book. In fact, all of this author's books are amazing.

I think this was my favourite one of the series. How gorgeous is this cover!

I loved Davis’ character and the relationship reconciliations he had to go through with his son and in-laws. Some of those scenes were raw and emotional.

Callie was like a hurricane - coming in strong and fast and leaving an impact on everyone she met. Her backstory was also sad and she had a lot of growth to go through.

This book had a male and female narrator which changed with the POV of either Davis and Callie which I really liked. Especially the male voice.

A strong ending to the series and I would recommend this to everyone who loves contemporary fiction.

What an amazing story! I absolutely adored both main characters, Davis and Callie. Nicole Deese told the story from both characters point of view and did a stellar job giving them each their own voice. I loved how they were so different but their differences complimented each other perfectly. The conflicts were true to life and the conclusion satisfying while still being believable and realistic. It was a fun, enjoyable read, but also had deep themes which challenged me and made me think. I highly recommend this book!

A New Shade of Summer is a vibrant and truly gorgeous novel that was such a delight to read.

Callie has spent her life on the road, moving from one art commission to the next, relishing her freedom. The only place she ever returns to is Lenox, the home of her sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew. They are the reason for her visit to the charming town this summer. She certainly doesn't expect to kindle an attraction to local vet Davis, nor form a bond with his twelve-year-old son, and budding artist, Brandon. But if Callie isn't used to risking her heart, nor of dreaming of a future that involves staying in one place, is it worth building a relationship?

When Callie first meets Davis, it's not the best time for either of them. Davis has just learnt of his son's most recent truancy and Callie has just taken part in a paint fight with her niece and nephew. But while their first impressions might not have started them on the right foot, a stray dog soon changes their path. Callie and Davis's relationship journey just felt so natural. Every moment was a delight, even when they faced challenges. There are many beautiful relationship journeys in this book. Most notable, perhaps is Davis's relationship with his son Brandon. What was once a strong father-son bond has eroded over the past year, and Davis isn't sure what step to take next. Callie helps mend the riff, through art, compassion, patience, and understanding.

There is so much to enjoy about this book. I especially loved that it was written in alternating chapters from both Callie and Davis's perspective. They are such different people - Callie vibrant, free-spirited and spontaneous, while Davis is more ordered and logical. Their characters came across so clearly and were so unique. It was really fun watching them connect and break through the barriers that might have prevented them from finding love.

Combined with sweet romance, a strong sibling relationship between Callie and her sister, and fun moments spent enjoying the summer sunshine doing everything from kayaking to painting murals, this book celebrates love, family, and life.

Deese’s writing style is so full of life and heart, charming you from the very first page and keeping you hooked until the last word. And even then, you find yourself frantically shaking the book, hoping more pages fall out, because you aren’t ready for it to be over.

Such is the case with A New Shade of Summer.

Callie is one of my fave heroines this year, even though we have absolutely nothing in common. Except for our mutual appreciation of Davis (yummy) … and our cool-aunting skills. So, clearly that makes us best buds. And Davis… did I mention how yummy he is? Single dad. Veterinarian. Chapter 19 (trust me). Flirty when it counts, sincere when needed. A good friend. A good kisser (I’m assuming. Callie sure wasn’t complaining). Add in a quaint small town, a lovable dog, a larger than life best friend, a trio of tweens, and a couple of emotional subplots … you’ve got yourself a book that’s impossible to put down.

Undergirding the story is a beautifully-woven tapestry of themes that will hit you in all the feels. Grief, abandonment, marital strain, prickly family dynamics. Each of these wounds leaves at least one character broken on the inside, and when seen through an equally broken lens life could look very bleak indeed. But when seen through God’s eyes, when given a new pair of life-viewing glasses, we see the subtleties we had previously missed. The brushstrokes of God’s masterpiece portrait of our lives. Nicole Deese tucks this truth gently and authentically into the story, especially in one particular scene that will take your breath away.

Bottom Line: A New Shade of Summer is fun and romantic and heartfelt. Deese’s witty and endearing characters move right on into your heart, Callie’s tiny house hooked up to the trailer hitch. You will fall in love with Davis and Callie and their romance for sure, but you will also readily embrace the rest of the supporting players as well. Deese avoids cliches and trite caricatures, yet this story feels familiar in all the best ways – like a warm hug after a long journey home. If you’ve never read a book by this author, you are missing out!

A New Shade of Summer is a great addition to the Love in Lenox series. It is the third book in the series, however, just as it is with the other two books, this story can be enjoyed as a stand alone. There are characters from previous books that appear in this one, but the story line is strong on its own. I do recommend the whole series, however, as these books are just so enjoyable!

I have listened to all three of the Love in Lenox books on audio and have really liked them. A New Shade of Summer had both a male and a female narrator and I thought they did a very good job.

I will admit that although I loved the character of Callie, she did wear on me a bit by the last third of this book. She had some growing to do and some lies to overcome that she had been believing about herself for a very long time. I was happy with her again by the end of the novel. I thought Davis was amazing and he was a character that I did not really care much for in book two. The author did a good job of creating a character that I had a lot of compassion for.

I look forward to reading or listening to more books by this author.

It's no great surprise that Deese has irrevocably captured my heart yet again in Lenox. What was unexpected was how delightfully refreshed I felt every moment I soaked up this story, even through the moments heavy with loss and abandonment and heartache. The story was finely tuned and wonderfully fresh and surprising, but the characters are where Deese really dazzles. Davis is a man of tremendous heart and courage, weary from fighting the often loosing battles of parenthood, when in struts this effortlessly fun, and adorably quirky force of nature named Callie, who plows through all his plans and best intentions and gifts this wounded man with laughter and playfulness... and love seen from a new lens. What I love most about Nicole's writing is how it quickly it sinks into your bones, how seamlessly she kidnaps the reader and takes us on an unforgettable ride. A ride not packed with adrenaline and danger, but fueled by tenacity of spirit, resilience of heart, and an unending supply of hope. Yet another achingly beautiful tale from one of the best authors around. I dare you not to be moved. ~Amy Leigh Simpson, author of When Fall Fades and From Winter's Ashes

May I re-listen to this one immediately?

This book took me to my comfy place. Family, romance, deep issues, complex plot, emotions!, heart, kids, a dog… this book had all the good stuff!

I would have loved to see a little more of the mural painting, as that was the lead’s job but felt like a back-burner type of thing through the majority of the story. That’s really my only negative about this one.

Both narrators were fantastic. They drew me in, kept me focused, and brought lovely enthusiasm and emotion into each scene and chapter.

Callie Quinn is a wanderer. She never stays in one place for very long. Putting down roots is always the furthest thing from her mind.

Davis Carter is a widower who has been raising his son, Brandon, on his own for the last 7 years. He never planned on raising him alone but fate just hasn't been on his side when it comes to finding someone to spend the rest of their lives with.

Enter Callie. She is the complete opposite of what he thinks he needs in his life. But then he sees her connect with Brandon in a way that he has never been able to do. Is this fate's way of telling him to take another chance on love?

No one is more shocked than Callie when she arrives in Lenox and meets the town's favorite animal whisperer and starts feeling things she has never felt before. But this just can't happen. She's not built to be the forever kind of gal. But the more time she spends with Davis and Brandon, the more she starts to think maybe... just maybe this can work.

But just when things start to move forward between Callie and Davis, the past rears it's ugly head and has Callie second guessing what her heart wants. Can Davis get her to open her heart and her mind? Can he help her to realize that the past does not control our future? That we are the ones in charge of our own destiny? How can he get her to see that if she wants something then she needs to reach out, grab it and hold on tight. Then, and only then, can they move forward and get their happily ever after.

Oh my gosh! I absolutely LOVED this book! If anyone deserves a HEA, it's definitely Callie and Davis! These two have been through so much in their lives and continue to put others before themselves. They bring out the best in the other and couldn't be more perfect together! I enjoyed watching their journeys as individuals, a couple and a family. The feels are definitely real my friends! The Love in Lenox series is definitely one of my favorites that will be read over and over and over again! I love it that much!

Ms. Deese has definitely earned her spot on my favorite authors list! I honestly don't even read synopsis's anymore... I just auto buy the books! And she never disappoints! She really is an amazing and talented writer!

And of course I couldn't forget my casting! For those of you who have read it, I'm sorry! I just couldn't resist! This was just too perfect! ;) Hehe. What do you think?

Callie Quinn has utilized her artistic abilities to maintain a nomadic lifestyle. Learning the root of her choices and what she thinks of herself just made me love her more for her authenticity. Davis Carter is a devoted dad! He has a great support system even when his pride makes it uncomfortable to ask for help. Davis and Callie's personalities compliment one other so beautifully!

I'll be revisiting this series for future pleasure reading and I highly recommend it!

For those of you wondering if clean, Christian romance can be entertaining, make you swoon, have character depth, contain a realistic storyline, lead to a ‘one more chapter’ really, really late bedtime, take you on a google search for towns you know are probably not real but you secretly hope you’re wrong and give you a desire for a club sandwich - meet Nicole!!! 🤎📚🥪 Thank me later!

Audiobook - nailed it! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

"You're right. You probably shouldn't interfere."

Callie Quinn has arrived in the peaceful town of Lenox, Oregon, eager to spend the summer with her sister's family. Having been contracted to paint a facade on a local bakery, Callie's occupation as a muralist takes her around the country, happily pulling her Tiny House behind her. When confronted with the father of her nephew's friend; after an unfortunate, but intentional adolescent miscommunication; Callie and Dr. "Storm Cloud" don't share positive first impressions. It takes a wounded stray dog, and a disgruntled teen to bring these two opposites into alignment.

"The image of a wild haired woman with a half-painted face and a lack of personal boundaries", comes to mind when veterinarian Davis Carter meets Callie Quinn for the second time. Her free spirit and kind soul are surprisingly refreshing, and considering how much his son Brandon already likes the woman, Davis realizes he may have misjudged her during their first round of acquaintance. How easily she slides into their lives, like she belongs . . . . or something. Sadly, Callie carries deep wounds and is convinced that long term relationships are not in her genetic package.

Nicole Deese has clearly written a lovely story, with characters who are working through their own brokenness; hinting and hoping that freedom is loving and being loved, in any and all locations.

A New Shade of Summer is Nicole Deese's best book yet. I've seldom seen such a naturally-developed romance paced so perfectly. Avoiding cheap plot devices, Davis and Callie's story is authentic and oh-so-sweet.

The alternating first person point of view works, allowing all the smart, funny interior thoughts to shine, and the reader to see into each character's soul.

The minor characters are well-developed and given their own little storylines, which support and enrich the novel. The pieces of this story - little bright spots, if you will - meld perfectly into a brilliant, unforgettable romance I did not want to end.

Solid, dependable, serious, stable, single dad, great veterinarian and community member – This is what others thought of when they thought of Davis. He did too. Yet, there were times he felt like his world was starting to unravel. You see, he had a pre-teen son and life just started to become crazy. What was he doing wrong, how could he get their life back to normal?
All this changed when their world collided with Callie coming to town.
Artsy, free-spirit, dreamer, wild-haired Irish gypsy – Those were the names people thought of when they thought of Callie. She did too. She believed she was a drifter, just like her father. Someone who “wasn’t created to be boxed in or limited by anyone or anything.” "A Fire Dancer.”
Her life started to change when she met Davis and his son.
There’s a quote in this book which went deep into my soul, “If our decisions are based on false beliefs, then we’ll never experience the life we’re meant to live – the life God has in store for us.” Wow!
Nicole Deese has written a sweet story of acceptance, forgiveness, loss and love. There is drama, humor, colorful and whimsical word pictures. Ms. Deese truly has a wonderful way with words.
I highly recommend you pick this book up, and read it. It just might change your way of looking at thing.

A New Shade of Summer ( Love in Lenox )
By: Nicole Deese
Wow, What a story, I absolutely loved it. I have read one other book by Nicole Deese , but hopefully I will be reading more by this wonderful author. Love her writing and she captured my heart right at the start and I was hooked. I did not want to put it down. The story and the characters, both were easy to read and well developed. Callie an artistic and she wanders from place to place. She comes to visit her sister and family for the summer. Davis, is a widower father of a preteen son, Brandon. Brandon plays a big role in A New Shade of Summer. I felt slo sorry for him and at times I had tears in my eyes. Sparks fly between Callie and Davis , but can both of them surrender fears to find love. These two have so much going against them. Would love to read more stories from Lenox.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the author, Publisher, and NetGalley, but I was not told that I had to give a positive review.

I love, love, LOVE this book! Can you hear the hallelujah choir singing literary affirmation in the background? Because that's how much I love this book! Callie charmed me and Davis sent me into a tailspin of euphoric hero-worship! I mean, really, an animal whispering veterinarian?! Be still my heart. And there's a character I really loved to hate...in an unrepentantly venomous way. There are certain times when a reader just needs to be filled with a good fury of righteous indignation on behalf of beloved characters. :-)

Davis and Callie's love story is deliciously romantical but not without complications and angst. Callie might seem like a free spirit but she is bound by a childhood trauma that has shaped her life...and keeps her running from commitment. Davis has suffered unimaginable loss and has his troubled preteen son to consider so he's cautious and pragmatic.

But, oh la la, these two are so good together! They balance each other perfectly. Davis is a steadfast anchor to Callie's embrace-the-moment exuberance. This is storytelling at its finest - the measure of words and descriptions that exactly fit the characteristics of the hero and heroine drew me deeper into their lives. And the title tie-in is superb! I got choked up at one point and cried happy tears at the end.

This inspirational romance ticks all the boxes for me - compelling characters, lots of heart and faith and just enough laughter to bind it all together. Sublime!

I absolutely loved this book! Nicole Deese's skill in writing is outstanding, from her exquisite characters to her storyline filled with a depth and complexity that kept me riveted until the end.
Although this is the third book in the Lenox series, I was able to jump right in without having read the previous two. However, now I'm anxious to get my hands on those! I was completely captured by the plot Deese created, which was brimming with humor, grief, life, and love. This is a story I will not soon forget, as the characters filled my head and heart.
I am confident this book will resonate with those who read it. It's a treasure, guaranteed to leave you with a lasting impression!

4.5 stars!

By the end I loved it!

So to start I was not impressed because I was not fan of Davis from book 2. However I have to say I was introduced to a new shade of Davis and I now love him.

Callie and Davis were an odd match but it really worked!

I loved the topics that Nicole included in this story: abandonment issues, rebellious preTeen, dealing with unresolved issues, unanswered prayer, healing, bereavement and salvation.

I loved “the glasses” :)

I have to say I missed Weston and Alex but understand why they were not included in this story.

5 Stars for the accompanied audiobook narrated by Scott Merrimack and Kate Turnbull. I loved the dual performance!

Recommended for all romance fans! With a slight Christian angle.

This book! An absolutely gripping, sweet romance!
The characters! So very realistic, and true-to-life!

The setting–small-town USA, down to earth, such a homey feel!
Callie, an artistic redhead, and Davis, the town vet seem to have nothing in common. She’s outgoing, artsy, and flits from one place to the next, while he is rather stern, serious about life, and level-headed, like-a-rock-solid.
But Davis is having trouble relating to his preteen son, and somehow Callie is one of the few people that can connect with him, and really knows how to draw him out.
I loved the way their relationship grows, slowly, as they learn to understand and appreciate each other. Their differences at first seem too great, but they are the very things that draw them to each other.
I would consider this book as more of an easy read, but yet the author addresses very real issues of life, things we can all identify with.
We see Callie & Davis grow as they learn to rely on and trust God, even for the hard things in life.
Another winner from a talented writer, I can’t wait to read more from this author!

Having a veterinarian as a lead was a fun part of the story, and I also enjoyed how the narration for the audiobook featured a man and a woman to match the parts by the two leads.

I had a harder time connecting with the leads than I did in the other books of the series; I've always had a hard time with the "player" trope, and Callie seemed to be utterly unconcerned about the people around her. So while the romance is really sweet and all the incidents along the way are fun to read, I didn't get super emotionally wrapped up in the characters because I found Callie to be rather unlikable/unrelatable.

Otherwise it's a really sweet and unique love story and I was invested in how these two leads were going to make things work out.
