Dollycas’s Thoughts

An absolutely delightful new cozy from Julie Chase! Doesn’t that grab you right away?

Lacy’s back and this time her father has been accused of murdering his best friend. Her dad goes into slump, her mother is in denial and worried more about upcoming National Pet Pageant, Lacy goes into overdrive to find proof so that Detective Jack Oliver will leave her dad alone and find the real killer. The tables turn on Lacy when she receives an envelope and finds herself in the cross hairs of a blackmailer. To Jack’s dismay Lacy acts again without thinking things through and puts herself in danger.

I love Lacy Crocker. She is creative and smart and devoted to her dad. When she learns he was with his friend so close to the time of his death she knows exactly what Jack is going to do. She tries to warn her mother but she doesn’t think it is a big deal until they take her husband to the station for questioning. Then she expects Lacy to fix everything.

Lacy’s mother is very demanding without her husband in the hot seat. This time she not only expects Lacy to clear her father but she also puts her on the Pet Pageant committee, a committee that she chairs. She has declared that all committee members to dress in pastels for an entire month. Remember Lacy is also running a business, a business where sales should increase when the pageant takes place. She also has several special orders. All this before she even tries to have any private life. So murder, blackmail, a new wardrobe, her business, a pageant, and normal life. Lacy’s plate is more than overflowing. This mother/daughter relationship ebbs and flows. Lacy doesn’t ever want to hurt her mom’s feelings but it is hard work. As the story continues the relationship starts to brighten but I feel for Lacy so much under all that weight.

The private life I mentioned includes attorney Chase Hawthorne and Detective Jack Oliver. They each have their pluses and minuses. I remain on Team Jack!

The focus of the story lets us get to know some of the supporting characters. Imogene, Lacy’s former nanny takes on the heavy load of The Furry Grandmother while Lacy does her investigating and Scarlet helps Lacy with the case as she taps into the gossip train around town. But it is Penelope and Spot that always make me smile and laugh.

The mystery is well written and keeps a steady pace from beginning to end. The subplots and main plot flow together nicely. Secrets, secrets and more secrets drive this story. The plot takes an interesting twist that brings many more suspects to the forefront. The drama escalates when Lacy finds herself in more than a little danger. My pages were turning briskly.

The story takes place around Valentine’s day and it was fun to see people shopping for their pets.

I adore this series. Fun characters and themes and entertaining mysteries. I do suggest you read them in order to get to know the characters from the start. They are all perfect escapes!

Lacy Crocker is the proud owner of Furry Godmother, a pet boutique and organic treat bakery, in New Orleans. Cat Got Your Secrets is the third book in the Kitty Couture Mystery series. This newest installment is centered around Valentine's Day (without being sappy about it, too -- which I loved!) and a National Pet Pageant.

Lacy is on her way to deliver some treats when she sees emergency vehicles at a crime scene. She discovers that one of her father's friends has been murdered. The major problem is that the last person to see Wallace Becker alive was her father. Lacy knows she has to act fast and investigate Becker's death to prevent her father from being arrested, while juggling her business, serving on the welcoming committee for the pet pageant, and her usual busy life.

Lacy is an enjoyable main character, although a bit spoiled and immature at times. Her mother is incredibly annoying (but the character is meant to come off as utterly impossible). I did find it a bit hard to connect on a personal level with the characters as they are not well developed, which happens sometimes in a fast-paced cozy. I may have had a bit of a disconnect because this is the first book in this series that I've read. I was able to pick up the plot and basic understanding of the characters so that I could enjoy the mystery, but maybe I would feel more connected with these characters if I read the first two books. But, my disconnect might be caused by the fact I don't really find the characters all that likable? They come off as rich and spoiled. But, I was reading the book for the mystery, not to fall in love with the characters. The mystery starts off almost immediately....and kept my attention for the entire book. Great mystery. Slightly annoying characters.

I liked the fast pace, humor, setting, and quirky characters (with the exception of her pushy, annoying mother). There were plenty of suspects, and the mystery is engaging. I enjoyed Cat Got Your Secrets enough to backtrack and read the first two books. Middle of the road rating on this one for me. The mystery kept me reading....but I didn't really care for the characters. If I change my mind after reading the beginning of the series, I will come back and amend this review.

I loved Cat Got Your Secrets. This series by Julie Chase quickly found a place in my heart with the first book in series Cat Got Your Diamonds late last year. I was even more enchanted with Cat Got Your Cash when I got to read it in February and was anxiously awaiting Cat Got Your Secrets! I was so delighted when I was approved to read and review it on Netgalley. This one is out September 12th and I am so excited for you to read it. Like all great trilogies the third book is even better than the first two!
Main character, Lacy is a costume designer for animals, baker and shop owner in New Orleans, from a fell known and wealthy family and yet so down to earth. She has a wonderful employee who happens to have been her Nanny, a devoted best friend who would do anything for her and a love sick younger man who is at her service, if only in the friend zone. Lacy has a great head on her shoulders, naturally curious, smart and connected to the local police detective who she can match with her wit and charm and devotion. On top of all of this Lacy has a quirky family, community obligations and expectations, a mild coffee addiction and the most wonderful costume wearing cat who rides the self powered vacuum cleaner as if it was a parade float at Mardi Gras! There is so much to love about this series and I am delighted I got to read and review it! Now that all three books are going to be out, I think it would make a great holiday gift for the cozy mystery lover in your life and for yourself. Perhaps picking them up for Buy A Friend A Book Day on August 31st! For you friend or yourself! I won't tell! Crooked Lane Books has a winner in this Kitty Couture Mystery series and Julie Chase has everything you need in Lacy's store, even a tiara for your turtle...

A very fun and light read in this third installment in the series. At this point, I've gotten over the concept that she makes a real living with a store selling pet costumes and just enjoying the book and the subsequent mystery. This time, the main suspect is in her immediate family, causing Lacy to exert even more effort into finding the killer. The romantic element with Chase and Detective Oliver is still somewhat of a triangle and I'd like to see her in a relationship in the next book.

Wow! That was unexpected (in a good way). I always love when a mystery is personal, and this one definitely is. Lacy has her hands full trying to prove her father's innocence, keep her mom happy, and run her business. The story was a lot of fun and had some great humor, but the love triangle is getting a bit boring.

Another fun mystery in the Kitty Couture series by Julie Chase. Not only is this book really fun, it has a great mystery also. There are twists and turns around every corner. I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you love cozy mysteries, I strongly recommend this book and the series.

I received this book in exchange or a fair and honest review.

Setting:  New Orleans

Characters:  Lacy Marie Crocker-NOLA native and recently returned fashion designer and owner of a pet boutique. Detective Jack Oliver-former military, no-nonsense police detective.

Plot:  Valentine's Day is fast approaching, and Lacy is busy keeping her boutique stocked with holiday themed pet treats, toys, and, of course, fashionable outfits. Her mother, meanwhile, is taking advantage of the opportunity provided by an upscale - and very discreet - thrift store owner, going through the family mansion and picking out the items she can do without. While Lacy may be a little miffed at which items of hers her mom is trying to sneak out without telling her, she's surprised when her father seems to be just as cranky. His uncharacteristic mood is definitely cause for concern - especially when Detective Oliver arrives to arrest him. A man was found dead in a walk-in freezer and Lacy's father just happened to be a good friend . . . and the last person to see him alive. Much to Jack's chagrin, Lacy throws herself into his investigation yet again, desperate to clear her father's good name. But when photos and threats begin to arrive on her doorstep, threatening not only to reveal secrets from her past, but also Lacy's life, it's Jack who is feeling desperate to keep her safe.

Pacing:  Swift

Predictability:  Low

Wild Card:  Cat Got Your Secrets is the third in the Kitty Couture mystery series, and may be my favorite yet. I feel a little thrill of excitement whenever I see a new title in the series; I know I'm in for a great story, filled with humor, drama, action, and Julie Chase's signature quirky yet lovable heroine.

Cat Got Your Secrets is the third installment in the Kitty Couture Mystery series set in New Orleans featuring pet boutique owner Lacy Crocker. Lacy's shop the Furry Godmother is very busy with Valentine's Day right around the corner, she's busy designing pet costumes for the National Pet Pageant and a large order has come in for her delicious pet treats.

When Lacy goes to drop off dog biscuits for a neighbors Bark Mitzvah, she discovers the body of Wallace Becker dead in the community hall freezer. The owner of the Cuddle Brigade, a group of pet nannies appears to have suffered a heart attack and froze to death. Unfortunately, Lacy's father was the last person to see Wallace alive and he quickly becomes a person of interest in the untimely death.

Despite her parents misgivings Lacy sets out to clear her father's name with the reluctant help of Detective Jack Oliver and attorney Chase Hawthorne. Her digging soon uncovers adultery, an illegitimate child and blackmail with Lacy herself receiving threatening notes and photos.

Another hit in the series! Great characters and pets that will have you smiling and laughing aloud. Best of all it seems that the author may have put an end to the dreaded love triangle. Looking forward to the next adventure starring Lacy and her precious Roomba riding Penelope.

I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley via Crooked Lane Publishing. While not required to write a review I am more than happy to share my honest opinion.

Another good addition to the series. Lacy is settling into New Orleans well, if only she could stay away from murder mysteries. This time she is making a delivery and finds out her father's friend was found dead and her father was the last person seen with him. Now with her dad possibly being accused of murder and her mother upset because of the swirling gossip Lacy tries to figure out what really happened.

I enjoyed this book, just wish Lacy would make a final decision about who her love interest is. Hopefully that will be coming next.

Lacy Marie Crocker is staying busy making pet costumes, helping her mother organize the welcome event for the National Pet Pageant and sorting out her relationships with society pal Chase Hawthorne and hunky police detective Jack Oliver. Then her father's friend Wallace Becker is found dead in his own walk-in freezer and her father looks like the prime suspect.
This is the third in the Kitty Couture series, though it isn't necessary to read the first two to follow the relationships. The author does a nice job of providing New Orleans society color, and of making even the nastiest of the characters human and reasonably sympathetic. It would have been easy to turn Lacy's mother into a caricature, but that didn't happen.
The fits and starts of the investigation and the occasional wrong turn keep the story moving and keep the reader guessing.
I was certainly entertained by this book and will read the first two as soon as I can.
This voluntary review is based on an ARC received from the publisher.

I LIKED this book! It is the first in the series that I have read. I enjoyed that I didn’t figure out who did it until near the end.

It is filled with good writing, a good story, great characters that are believable. I liked that is was set around Valentine’s Day without having a sappy romance angle. I also enjoyed that Lacy is wrangled into serving on the National Pet Pageant committee with her mother. She finds that it could be good for business and getting to know others. I will be reading the first two in the series before the fourth one comes out. The author has a good sense of humor and I found myself laughing out loud in very public places.
Lacy Marie Crocker is the main character. Lacy is a costume designer for animals, baker and shop owner in New Orleans. She comes from a well known and wealthy family and has recently returned to NOLA after being gone for a while. She works with her friends Scarlet, Chase, and Detective Jack Oliver to find and resolve clues that may or may not point to the killer. There are a few subplots to the story but that makes it interesting.
Lacy’s father is the main suspect as he was last seen with the victim .Lacy is determined to clear her father.

I was given a free copy of this book and these are my unsolicited opinions.

Kitty Couture #3
Lacy Crocker runs a specialty store for pets. While creating treats and costumes for her clients pets, she has been drawn into investigations in the past, coming close to becoming a victim herself.Surrounded by family and good friends she creates a good life for herself.
When a friend of her father's dies suspiciously...and her dad was the last known contact of the victim, Lacy decides she must investigate on her own. With the backing of Chase, Savannah and Jack(her crush) she makes progress even as she's getting threats.
Written with intrigue, humor and some romance the book is a romp and is a page turner that I recommend highly.
I received a free copy to read and realized I missed the second in the series...gotta grab it now.

Secrets abound in this tale, and it looks like Lacy will have to sniff them out. When a friend of her father’s is found dead, her father becomes the prime suspect. Lacy is determined to prove his innocence, and she badgers her friend, Detective Jack Oliver, to let her help with the case. Lacy has her hands full looking for the real guilty party, placating her mother and helping with her mother’s charities, running her own high-end pet couture shop, and trying not to get killed herself killed it the meantime. This delightful mystery has just the right amount of romance to complicate Lacy’s life and make it interesting. Set in New Orleans around Valentine’s Day, this tale will have you laughing one minute and gasping the next.

I simply adore Julie Chase’s Kitty Couture series, and Cat Got Your Secrets just might be my favorite yet. Either the series keeps getting better, or I’ve come to enjoy characters who are familiar by now. But whatever the reason, this witty, well-written story that’s filled with southern charm provided a great reading experience.

New Orleans’s Garden District, known for its stately historic homes and wealthy residents, is a fascinating backdrop for the action that centers around Lacy and her Furry Godmother pet boutique and bakery. I love my pets, but when it comes to the couture designs that Lacy creates for her high-end customers, I just have to roll my eyes. Fun to read about, though!

Lacy might not be the smartest fictional detective, but she cares about her family and leads from the heart as she tries to clear her father’s name. Detective Jack Oliver is a favorite of mine … financially secure through inherited family wealth, but loves police work. The romantic tension and witty dialogue between them is wonderful. Lacy actually has two love interests, but let me just say that if Jack doesn’t win fair lady, I’ll be terribly disappointed.

Strong, appealing secondary characters add richness to the story, such as Lacy’s best friend and also their family employee who used to be her nanny. Lacy’s mother cares about her, but she’s a controlling figure who worries about appearances, and I’m on the fence as to how I feel about her. And then there’s Penelope, the cat. I can just see her riding the automatic vacuum cleaner around the shop!

The murder plot is well crafted. Rarely am I able to solve the murder’s identity; I just enjoy going along for the entertaining ride. The dry wit and some laugh-out-loud scenes are a strength of the story. This is also a clean read with no profanity or anything graphic. Thank you for that, Julie Chase!

Another creative touch that I loved are the quotes at the beginning of each chapter, helpful “tips” from Furry Godmother with a hint of what’s to come. Here’s two of my favorites …

“If you want something done right, do it yourself. Just don’t get caught.”

“Everyone deserves the royal treatment, even the jesters.”

I loved Cat Got Your Secrets and hope the series continues for a good while. Highly recommended.

I can’t say enough how much I love this series, and Cat Got Your Secrets reminded me why I love it all over again. Lacy, who just wants to run her pet boutique, keeps running into bodies (clearly the pet boutique business is a dangerous one) and then of course can’t help but figure out whodunit. This time it’s personal, and I really enjoyed the larger focus on her family in this book.

Southern fiction meets cozy mystery in this fun series set in the heart of New Orleans. Lacy Crocker will become a friend, and the eccentric band of characters (and pets!) she surrounds herself with will quickly take up residence in your heart. Wry humor, well-plotted mystery, those great characters and enough romance to keep you swooning make Cat Got Your Secrets a must read.

CAT GOT YOUR SECRETS is the third book in the Kitty Couture Mystery series but the first book I have had the opportunity to read. The wonderful New Orleans setting, quirky characters, and an engaging mystery make this a book sure to please cozy fans.

Lacy Crocker finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation when she drops off a special order for a bakery client and the Garden District’s event center. This is her third murder in less than a year, and she is still a bit traumatized from her last dangerous encounter with a killer. The victim, who was found in the center’s walk in freezer is her father’s friend Wallace Becker, and the last person to see him was none other than Lacy’s father. Things initially look bad for Dr. Crocker, circumstances making him the prime suspect. Luckily, Lacy has a friend on the force, but she still feels compelled to clear her father’s name as quickly as she can. This leads her down a twisty path of secrets, relationships, and blackmail. Lacy knows she must be getting close to identifying the killer when she too starts receiving threatening messages.

Since this is my first time reading about Lacy and her friends and family, and not knowing much about their back stories, I never really felt fully invested in the characters. Lacy seems intelligent, and she is definitely curious and no shirker of danger, but she really comes off as immature with her overreactions and assumptions. She does give off a bit of a spoiled “pretty princess” vibe. Actually, that’s my problem with all of the characters – they all have plenty of money and express an air of entitlement. Her mother is particularly annoying (I am sure she is meant to be), and she grew tedious as the story progressed. That said, I do like Chase and all his charm and Jack. He seems the most normal of all of them. Please let there be no love triangle.

The mystery itself is well executed, and the story moves along at a quick pace. Lacy is constantly in motion discovering new clues and suspects, and this kept me invested in the outcome. Any of the suspects would make a perfect killer, but the perpetrator’s identity and motive took me by surprise. It makes sense but feels like it was just thrown out there at the end.

CAT GOT YOUR SECRETS will appeal to many cozy mystery fans, especially those who enjoy pets being front and center. After all, Lacy does own a pet boutique and bakery. The mystery’s pace and engaging writing make it worth a read. I liked it.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.

The Kitty Couture Mystery series is just a fun, southern cozy mystery series that I have enjoyed and I am glad I finally got around to reading the last two books in the series. Lacy Crocker is the proud owner of Furry Godmother, a pet boutique and organic treat bakery, in New Orleans. In Cat Got Your Secrets, Lacy Marie Crocker stumbles into another murder scene while delivering a king-sized order of dreidel-shaped doggy biscuits for a Saint Berdoodle's bark-mitzvah. The problem is that the last person to see the victim alive was her own father, and he becomes the main suspect. All this is right when there is a huge dinner being planned in his honour. Her mother is fit to be tied and wants this case to be solved before everyone declines their invitation. Lacy works with (sort of) Detective Jack Oliver and when she starts to unearth clues, she begins to receive threats and possible blackmail pictures. What is going on in this case and can she and Jack find the killer before someone else ends up dead?

I love the character of Lacy Marie Crocker. She is a New Orlean's blueblood but does not want to make it on the coattails of her family. When she returns home she opens her own store and is doing well. I love that her bread and butter is making clothes for pampered pets. She is independent and smart, stubborn and loyal, creative and just a lot of fun. There are a couple of possible love interests, but it is not really a love triangle. I like both of them for different reasons and I like that her parents are not against either of the relationships should she decide to pursue either of them. From her wealthy and overbearing parents (at least her mama) to her somewhat kooky friend (and former nanny) Imogene to Lacy’s best friend Scarlet as well as Jack and Chase, she has a lot of people watching her back and she definitely needs it. And then there's Penelope her beloved cat who lives to ride around Lacy’s store on the back of the roomba. I enjoyed how this mystery played out. There were a lot of suspects, twists and red herrings that kept me guessing. Secrets, secrets and more secrets drive this story, which is where the title comes from. I enjoy this series as it has fun characters and entertaining mysteries. I do suggest you read them in order to get to know the characters from the start. If you enjoy a fun cozy mystery to escape into, then pick up the Kitty Couture mysteries.

I loved this fast-paced, fun mystery set in the Big Easy with a great cast of characters and well-crafted plot that kept me glued to the book from the first page to the last. I really liked Lacy Crocker, owner of Furry Godmother. a thriving pet boutique in New Orleans Garden District, and her dynamic with the other characters especially homicide detective Jack Oliver. Lacy sets out to clear her dad when he becomes a suspect in the death of his good friend.

This series gets better with each book and I can't wait to see what happens in the next Kitty Couture Mystery. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and liked it so much I purchased a copy for my keeper library.

Oh Lacy! This third installment in the Kitty Couture series finds Lacy trying to solve a murder mystery that implicates her dad all the while also trying to resolve her romantic triangle with Jack and Chance. This is one I'd recommend primarily for pet lovers because if you don't love animals, you might find it a bit over the top, what with the costumes and bark mitzvah. That said, it's a classic and entertaining cozy that's a fast read and just twisty enough in the plot that it will keep you guessing. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I'm looking forward to the next installment!

Loved this installment of this series. Lacy's Dad is accused of murdering his best friend and of course, that means Lacy is involved again! With her friends as her posse, she works to make sure her Dad is not found guilty. Jack continues to watch over her and bail her out of trouble - even to the end. I'm glad to see that relationship begin to perk, as the Chase thing just seemed too predictable, and no chemistry. A fun read and one I was glad to pick up and finish for Valentine's Day!

I really liked the previous book, Cats Got Your Cash, but I loved this one.
Great story, I got hooked right away, and you just can't beat New Orleans for the location.
Well developed characters and relationships, and witty banter keeps you entertained, while you keep trying to figure out "Whodunnit".
Read this book---you will not be disappointed!!

This is my first “Cat Got Your” book. It won’t be my last. Love the characters and the setting of the story. How much fun would it be to have a pet boutique? I would love it! Lacy, Chase, and Jack – that took me a little while to get straight, but I think things are progressing nicely now. Sometimes family love has its bumps, but it is the strongest love there is. Loved some of the dialog between Lacy and her mother. Can’t wait to see what the next adventure will be!

This just wasn't a book for me. It's not that it is poorly written I just had a very difficult time staying focused on the story and found I often had to go back and reread pages and pages as I had zoned out the first time reading them.

I'm really hooked on this series now and coming closer to the last book -- sob -- only four in the series. Love the snappy dialog and pizzazz the author brings to each character. And who can resist a roomba riding tabby? Not to mention the extravagant pet couture fashion! So over the top funny and yet I could picture each four legged critter all decked out in their finery.

A solid mystery with Lacy getting into all kinds of messes because she's nosy and stubborn and doesn't always think before she leaps. Perfect qualities for a cozy mystery heroine to have. And...woohoo...the dreaded love triangle was sorted at the end....

Or so I thought until I started listening to the fourth book this morning. Gah!

This is the third book in the series and I have to say, I've really enjoyed all three of the books. I haven't been able to figure out the mysteries in the first few chapters and the characters are interesting and real. Lacy has her hands full with her pet designer business, trying to make a life back in a town she ran from 10 years ago and being an "adult" in her mother's eyes. I love the growth Lacy has shown over the last three books and I am looking forward to seeing how she continues to develop along with her relationships with detective Jack Oliver, family friend Chase Hawthorne and her mother.

I got an advanced copy of this from netgalley. Julie Chase brings her plot to life with the help of her relatable characters, and her description of the great city of New Orleans. Lacy Crocker is back and finds herself thrust into another murder mystery. When her father is named a person of interest for the murder of his friend after an argument, Lacy knows that she has to help detective Jack Oliver solve the mystery. Lacy also has to help her mother with the organizing of the upcoming National Pet Pageant all the while deciding if her heart belongs to Jack or Chase.

Cat Got Your Secrets is the first book I have read in the “Kitty Couture Mystery” series. I do not think it will be my last. I adore books that involve pets and with the protagonist owning a shop dedicated to spoiling your pets, this ticks all the boxes for me. I enjoy the relationship main character Lacy Marie Crocker has with her family and friends. Set in the colorful city of New Orleans, full of quirky characters, fun writing style, this one is a hit for me.
Valentine’s Day is fast approaching which means a seriously busy time for Lacy at her pet boutique. Add to that her mother pushes her to participate in the upcoming National Pet Pageant, her love life is settling finally and besides her mother’s expectations, Lacy is also dealing with her mother’s new attitude and fashion. So when Lacy comes upon the murder scene of one of her dad’s friends, things get really hairy. Then she finds out why her father was acting so odd the night before. Her father Dr. Crocker had an argument with the deceased Wallace Becker that night and he could be the last person to see him alive before the killer. Unfortunately Lacy’s sort of boyfriend, Detective Jack Oliver has to follow the evidence and it is all pointing to her dad. As any good daughter would do, Lacy has to find out what happened, even if it means making Jack angry.
I really enjoyed the mystery in this cozy. The clues, the evidence, the trail of the killer, all of this could point to several different people, including Lacy’s dad. I loved the interaction and relationship of the characters. Even though I am a long way away from the life Lacy and her family and friends live, I felt like I could relate to them. The author, Julie Chase, is that good. She was able to bring them to life and their conversations were real and authentic. When Lacy is faced with a blackmailer trying to silence her, I felt the angst and fear. As she had to go to the pageant meeting and dreaded it, I did too. Even though this is the first in the series I have read, I already felt a connection to the characters.
I think even if you have not read the other two in this series, you should be able to jump right in and enjoy this one. The setting is interesting, the characters are fun, the mystery is intriguing. I would recommend Cat Got Your Secrets to any cozy reader that enjoys pets in the forefront. Also any cozy lover that insists on a well written plot and storyline. I really enjoyed this one. I know this will definitely not be the last book I read in this interesting series.
I was given a copy of the book, however the opinions expressed are my own.
