The King's Greatest Enemy #3

Under the Approaching Dark

Rate this book
Adam de Guirande has cause to believe the turbulent times are behind him: Hugh Despenser is dead and Edward II is forced to abdicate in favour of his young son. It is time to look forward, to a bright new world in which the young king, guided by his council, heals his kingdom and restores its greatness. But the turmoil is far from over.

England in the early months of 1327 is a country in need of stability, and many turn with hope towards the new young king, Edward III. But Edward is too young to rule, so instead it is his mother, Queen Isabella, and her lover, Roger Mortimer, who do the actual governing, much to the dislike of barons such as Henry of Lancaster.

When it is announced that Edward II has died in September of 1327, what has so far been a grumble grows into voluble protests against Mortimer. Yet again, the spectre of rebellion haunts the land, and things are further complicated by the reappearance of one of Adam’s personal enemies. Soon enough, he and his beloved wife Kit are fighting for their survival – even more so when Adam is given a task that puts them both in the gravest of dangers.

Under the Approaching Dark is the third in Anna Belfrage’s series, The King’s Greatest Enemy, the story of a man torn apart by his loyalties to his lord, his king, and his wife.

Anna was raised abroad, on a pungent mix of Latin American culture, English history and Swedish traditions. As a result she's multilingual and most of her reading is historical- both non-fiction and fiction. Possessed of a lively imagination, she has drawers full of potential stories, all of them set in the past. She was always going to be a writer - or a historian, preferably both. Ideally, Anna aspired to becoming a pioneer time traveller, but science has as yet not advanced to the point of making that possible. Instead she ended up with a degree in Business and Finance, with very little time to spare for her most favourite pursuit. Still, one does as one must, and in between juggling a challenging career Anna raised her four children on a potent combination of invented stories, historical debates and masses of good food and homemade cakes. They seem to thrive…

For years she combined a challenging career with four children and the odd snatched moment of writing. Nowadays Anna spends most of her spare time at her writing desk. The children are half grown, the house is at times eerily silent and she slips away into her imaginary world, with her imaginary characters. Every now and then the one and only man in her life pops his head in to ensure she's still there.

First I just want to say that reading this book really makes me want to read the first book that I haven't had time to read. Not that it was hard to read Days of Sun and Glory without having read In the Shadow of the Storm, but I'm curious, I have read so much in these two books about how Kit and Adam met that I want to get the whole story. Also, for some reason, did I a couple of times during the progress of this book think that I should re-watch (or re-read) Ivanhoe as well...

Under the Approaching Dark is a fascinating book. I was quite captivated by the story. I, to be honest, didn't know much about this time period before I started to read this series. That's one thing that I like about the book. It's entertaining, and at the same time do I learn more about England during the 1400-century. Personally, the only thing I had a hard time with were the battles in the book, but that is more about my taste than anything wrong with the book. Like the rest of the book are the battles well-written, I just have a hard time being interested in reading about England fighting the Scots (especially since I feel sorry for the Scots). But, thankfully, it's just a small part of the book.c

Adam and Kit have a lot of things to deal with in this book. The loss of their son in the previous book has taken them hard, especially since the boy died when they were away and they never got to see his body. Thankfully they have each other and their love is strong. But, the world is changing around them and Adam has his duty to be at the king's side whenever he calls and Kit can not always be by Adams side. and, there is an enemy out there who wants to strike them down.

And England has a new young king after Edward II is forced to abdicate. One who has yet grown into his role. It's his mother Queen Isabella, and her lover, Roger Mortimer, who actually do the most of the governing. However, Edward is growing up, and one day the boy will be a man and a true king. What will happen with Isabella, and Roger Mortimer when the day comes? Personally, I found it's interesting that one of the most poignant scenes in this book is about Edward II. I never thought I would really like him, he was not a strong king. But, if he had been spared being king, I wonder if he had not been a much happier man.

Under the Approaching Dark is just like Days of Sun and Glory well-written and well-researched. Reading this book made me want to know more about this era. I was fascinated to learn more about the monarchy in England and France and I can't wait to read the next book!

With the deposing of Edward II, the ruler over England is now Edward III, though he is ruled by his mother Queen Isabella and her lover, the formidable Lord Mortimer. Adam now serves the young King, his loyalty is resolute even though he still harbors great affection for Mortimer. In this, the third tale of Adam and his wife Kit, the author brings to life the increasing tension in the royal court as Edward III comes of an age where he longs to shed his keepers and take up the mantle of kingship on his own. It is a story filled with twists and turns; the emotional frailties of the human spirit; the battle for control of the crown; the longing for home and loved ones. It is also a story of love and romance; Isabella and Mortimer, Edward and his young wife Phillipa, and most especially between Adam and Kit. The author is on her game when it comes to the foibles and joys of the bonds of love. An eloquent, page turning drama awaits the reader, though I must admit to having to stop turning pages when Kit and Adam are - well you'll see for yourself. :-) I've come to appreciate the amazing talent Anna Belfrage has exhibited in drawing me into the stories she writes, and Under the Approaching Dark is another fine example of that talent. 5 stars

I didn't think Anna could woo my reader's brain as much with this second series, but she certainly has, and I am happy to say I even liked this third book the very best of this series.

This series takes place in 14th century England and features the couple of Adam de Guirande and his wife Kit as they are placed amid the drama of King Edward II, Queen Isabella, Roger Mortimer, and Hugh Despenser - all interesting real historical characters. As we are introduced to Adam and Kit, I realize Anna has a huge feat in front of her - to research and present the historical characters in an accurate way with her own spin that will create excitement for the reader, while also creating Adam, Kit, and a whole host of other characters that will launch off the page at you and tell you they are most certainly real. And Anna will tell you the same too. I know, I know, Anna - they talk to you, maybe even yell at you, to get their story out.

I digress a little, but my point is that Anna is such a great writer she does it all with ease. She creates likeable, and not likable, characters that you grow to love, and hate, in a way that makes you feel like you've been transported to the 14th century and know them personally. They cease to exist as characters and truly become people. This is the most important thing in a story teller, for without the best characterization, a story can run very flat even if highly researched or developed. Anna is never dry and always entertaining in her dialogue and humor of the characters. I especially enjoy her female characters, and really feel more in love with Kit by this third book, even though she tries to give the male the lead of the story. Maybe she does that to boost his ego, but it doesn't take long to read between the lines of who actually prods the men's decision-making, for good or bad.

Particularly in the third book, her opening scene is so emotional, which is something I see Anna has worked on developing. It was a touching moment, even in its brevity before she was back to humor, but enough to make me have a pang of sorrow for Adam. Though it is on the first couple pages, I don't want to give a spoiler if you've not read the second book. In fact, a lot happened in the second book to lead into the third, and so I highly recommend you do read this series in order for full enjoyment. Big things occurred to shift the dynamics within King Edward II's realm, and to Adam and Kit as well, and this has carried over into more treachery, rebellion, hard decisions, intrigue, and loss in this third book. However, there is still a good amount of love, sacrifice, redemption, and hope weaved throughout the tale as well.

Anna's decriptive prowress has always been on point, but honestly, it keeps getting better. She knows exactly how to describe things to put us in the moment, and her amount of research detail peppered throughout the book is not only relevant, accurate, authentic to the story, but worded with just the right verbiage.

Kit's character waned under Adam's stronger one for me for awhile. I love a strong, yet emotionally adept man, but in this book Kit's strength during what was happening, and her own personal struggle - I don't want to spoil - was down right Oscar worthy in the best way. Her intelligence has always shined through, but now her tenacity was more profound. And as Edward III takes on a new role of growth in this novel and into the next, I see how much she's shown the reader just how a young monarch might grow up to be in his circumstances as well. To me, this growth, shows even more the penmanship of Anna as she challenges herself with each story before the series heads to its climax.

As always, Anna is a master carver of words and plot in order to bring you a drama rich in history, resistance, tragedy, tension, love, and survival. I couldn't put Under the Approaching Dark down and I'm more than ready for the fourth book in The King's Greatest Enemy series. Highly recommended for long days or nights when you can get caught up without fear of interuptions.

P.S. Any author in need of writing dialogue assistance MUST read Anna Belfrage. She's a master at dialogue. And hilarious too!

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, which I've given.

So we are back with Adam and Kit. I must admit I’ve missed these two. This is the third book in The King’s Greatest Enemy series.

Immediately I was struck by the cover of this book much more so than the previous two, the image and the colours used are definitely to my taste and suit the tale which is a mix of historical fiction and romance.

Hugh Despenser is dead..Finally Adam can relax! Nope.. not a chance.

King Edward II has been forced from the throne and his son Edward now rules as King Edward III. This king is young but he likes to keep those he likes close to him.. Adam included.. He’s sworn to the king and will serve him until the day he dies or is released from service.

There’s a lot of growing tension in this book. First and foremost some of the most powerful lords and businessmen don’t like the fact Mortimer and the Queen mother are acting as the king’s advisers, more so when it’s clear they are lovers even though both are still married! Add to this a brewing conflict with Scotland and a difference of opinion on how it should be handled means rebellion is on the cards.

One issue keeps bubbling to the surface..what to do with the old king? Well this is where Adam and Kit come in, I don’t want to spoil the tale at all but I really enjoyed their involvement in this part of the tale.

As the young king grows it’s clear to Adam that one day this king will not appreciate the input of the Queen mother and Mortimer but they have tasted power and it doesn’t look like they will give up control easily. He even starts to take his frustrations out on Adam during training but as the tale progresses I do feel the king learns Adam’s worth.

An old foe reappears in Kit’s life..and it spells trouble. Again I won’t spoil it but this foe drives a wedge between Adam and Kit by hitting them with a very sensitive issue indeed.

Of course Kit and Adam can get through anything..They may not make it out unscathed but as long as they have each other they will be fight and stay together. They each have their cross to bear during this tale and it can only make them stronger and more determined to be with each other and no other.

For me the book is certainly a 5* story, I won’t lie though..the romance was a little much for my personal tastes but the reason the story still warrants a 5* is because I can understand why it’s there.. the books wouldn’t be the same without it..I feel the book needs this romance and it certainly does build on the truly loving relationship and connection Adam and Kit have which brings that something extra to the tale.

For me this is the best installment in the series so far and it gives Adam more chance to shine. As much as I love Kit it’s Adam who leaves the lasting impressions on me during this books, I loved the writing and there’s so much going on to really get you hooked in. Well worth reading.

Ms. Belfrage has done it again. Under the Approaching Dark is book 3 in The King’s Greatest Enemy series, and it has passion, intrigue, and politics to keep the reader turning pages. If you aren’t familiar with England in the 1320s, never fear. Plunge into this book and you are introduced to the major players – the fictional Lady Kit and her husband Adam and the actual historical figures Edward II, Edward III, his mother Isabella, her lover Roger Mortimer, and others. We aren’t overburdened with backstory: it is woven in bits and pieces where needed. Ms. Belfrage draws us into the 14th century for a taste of life of the ordinary man, the minor baron and his wife, and of the royal family. It is easy to picture towns and manors, magnificent castles and minsters. And after visiting Lincoln last year, I was enchanted by Ms. Belfrage’s description of that medieval town, cathedral, and bishop’s palace. It took me back – it all feels authentic.

The novel brims with treachery, treason, and romance. Battle scenes, torture, and love scenes – some may be too graphic for the squeamish, but they are well written, full of emotion. There are great threats from rebellious barons. There is tedious everyday life and plenty of tension – between Adam and Kit, between Adam and the young king, and between Adam and his former lord, Mortimer. But I think what I most enjoyed about this novel is our window into the world of the young King Edward III. He becomes king when his father is deposed, and is a pawn of his mother Queen Isabella and her lover Roger Mortimer. Edward is bright. He is politically astute (most of the time). He knows – and resents – the control his mother has as regent. But he is also a vulnerable. This reader is rooting for him and greatly anticipating Book 4 in the series to see Edward as king in his own right.

Disclosure: I received an advanced copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review. See additional comments about the book on my blog.

This thrilling book is already the 3rd part of "The King's Greatest Enemy" series.
The historical details have been very well researched and interpreted by the author, so much so that it makes this book such a believable and enjoyable one to read.
Story-telling is once again of a superb quality, for the author pictures the atmosphere of these turbulent times in English history in a very lifelike fashion, and where all the characters, whether they are real or fictional, come splendidly to life within this tale of romance, love, hate, treachery, bloodshed and death.
The book is now set as from the beginning of the year AD 1327 until the beginning, January, of the year AD 1329, and England still completely in turmoil about the role of Baron Roger Mortimer as head of state along with Queen Isabella, much against the wishes of the now young King Edward III and some of his most important leading Earls.
What this story also shows is the confusion about the fate of Sir Edward, the former King Edward II, some say he's dead, accidentally or murdered, but later on that he left England under disguise after being exiled, and so lived somewhere else for the rest of his life, but that confusion will sparkle and lead to more and more bloodshed between the factions of King Edward III and that of the former King.
Apart from the brutal historical events that are taking place during this period of history, this tale, just like its predecessors, gives us also hot and sensual sex scenes in a most picturesque and delightful fashion between our main fictional characters Adam de Guirande and his wife Kit.
Besides that Adam and Kit have also many problems of their own with a certain Godfrey of Broseley, and so this story will turn into a trilling and adventurous journey, home and abroad, for our main characters.
Really recommended, for this delightful romantic and eventful historical adventure is for certain a very likeable and fascinating read, and that's why I like to call this book: "A Wonderful Heroic & Romantic Third Volume"!

"Edward III was King of England from 25 January 1327 until his death; he is noted for his military success and for restoring royal authority after the disastrous and unorthodox reign of his father, Edward II. Edward III transformed the Kingdom of England into one of the most formidable military powers in Europe. His long reign of 50 years was the second longest in medieval England and saw vital developments in legislation and government—in particular, the evolution of the English parliament—as well as the ravages of the Black Death."

In Under the Approaching Dark, Edward III is a lad of just 14, too young to rule, or so his mother Isabella of France, and her lover Roger Mortimer say, so they rule for him. His father, King Edward II was deposed by Isabella.

Adam de Guirande and his wife Kit are returning characters in this fictionalized account of England in 1327. There are numerous enemies of both the young King and Adam. With having to go back and forth from their home to court can take its toll on their marriage but they persevere. Through death and despair, the love they have for each other is tested by their loyalty and love for the young king.

Author Anna Belfrage always keeps me interested in whatever she writes. The history is well researched and her ability to blend fact and fiction, love and hate, always makes me eager to read another of her stories. I have read all of the books that Anna has written in this series and her previous series, The Graham Saga, a time travel romantic historical series.

If you enjoy a well-written historical fiction novel, then you can't go wrong with Under the Approaching Dark. Nice job Anna!

This was a good addition to this amazing series. I have enjoyed each of these action packed books. The way the author writes and is so detailed in her descriptions you feel as if you are a part of the story, She grabs you from the very first page and before you know it the day is gone as you are deep into the book. I like the mix of action and romance as well as the historical part of the story. It was nice to catch up with Adam and Kit and they cast of characters. I liked how Anna mixes real figures with the fictional characters we have come to admire and love. Even though it will be a long wait I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

I admit I was looking forward to reading book 3 in this series and I wasn't disappointed. Ms Belfrage leads us through an even more complicated historical period, where the old king is imprisoned, then presumed dead—or is he? The young king is keen to get his hands on power but so far his mother and her lover have tight hold of the reins. It is an explosive situation and the reader is kept on tenterhooks wondering about the outcome.
Against this turbulent background our heroes Kit and Adam continue with their lives—a typical existence for a knight in the service of the king: spasmodic visits to his home and the constant worry about whether his family will be in danger.
The re-emergence of an old villain adds extra tension to this fast moving story and we are left, as always in Ms Belfrage's books, with some unanswered questions and a thirst to read the next episode. Bring on book four!

Two kings in one land make for an uncomfortable fit…

The hated and feared, Hugh Despenser is dead, and the feeble King Edward II has finally been usurped. As the crown is placed on Edward III’s head, Adam de Guirande hopes, like many others, that finally the country will know not only stability but peace. However, nothing is assured, especially when the king they have crowned is only fourteen years old. What does he know about running a country? As the nobles pay homage to King Edward, they also look to the Regent to lead them. Sir Roger Mortimer is now the de facto ruler of England. But with great power comes great responsibility. Many fear, and quite rightly too, that Mortimer will use his position to increase his wealth, as well as his influence.

Adam is torn between his king and the man who gave him everything. Mortimer was his liege lord, but not anymore, for Adam has sworn his allegiance to King Edward. Adam, like others in court, watch nervously as Mortimer favours his friends and shuns everyone else. Adam cannot help but fear for Mortimer’s future, for the Wheel of Fortune is forever turning. Past events should surely hint at a warning of what is to come. Despenser had it all and look where he is now. But there seems to be no stopping Mortimer’s ambition. Adam is but a spectator as the young King becomes increasingly resentful towards his Regent. Adam knows that Edward will one day snatch the lead rope from Mortimer’s hand and take control of the bridle. It is not a case of if, but when. And when that happens, God help any man who sides with Mortimer. Adam knows that one day soon he will have to choose between them. The question is, will he stand with Edward? Or, will he side with the Kingmaker?

Kit de Guirande has already lost a son to this medieval game of thrones. Will she lose her husband as well? If only Edward would allow Adam to be relieved of his duties at court, then all would be well. But Edward relies on Adam too much. So Kit must grin and bear it, for now at least...

From the terror of the Scottish raid on the newly crowned king’s camp at the Battle of Stanhope Park to the attempted rebellion of Henry of Lancaster, Under The Approaching Dark by Anna Belfrage is a medieval triumph.

This book is filled with memorable characters, non-stop action, a narrative that is as elegant as it is appealing and a story that is so riveting that time ceased to matter. This book, this series, is absolutely irresistible.

Belfrage writes with authority, but also incredible sensitivity. There is a great depth to the writing as well as a beautifully balanced perspective of what this time in history was like. The court of Edward III has been brought gloriously back to life in this remarkable retelling.

Told through the experiences of Adam and his wife Kit, Under The Approaching Dark, has much to recommend it. The struggles that our two brave protagonists faces are enough in itself to keep a reader turning those pages, let alone the intrigue, danger, and the ever-present threat of a rebellion at Edward's court. The cruel Despenser may be dead, but his associates are still very much alive, and while they breathe both Kit and Adam’s lives are in peril.

Aside from the constant threat of death, or worse, the gentle and passionate love story of Adam and Kit continues throughout this book. Their romance makes this series a must-read for anyone who loves historical romance fiction. I cannot help but compare it to Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. Adam’s and Kits relationship is as intense and as tantalising as Jamie’s and Claire’s. But this is more than just a romance book, Under the Darkening Sky is a comprehensive interpretation of the early days of King Edward III’s reign. It is a story not to be missed for it is a gripping account of war, ambition, betrayal and love. It is utterly engrossing from start to finish.

I thought the interpretation of the usurped Edward II was fabulous, and surprisingly he has his own moment of true heroism, which made him almost endearing.

Belfrage has written a compelling book about an extraordinary time in English history. This book and this series continue to hold my fascination, and I cannot wait to read book 4!

I Highly Recommend.

I will open by noting that I was very excited to learn that this was not the last book in this series. I’ve come to enjoy my forays into the world of Adam de Guirande and his lady, Kit. They are deeply drawn characters that feel so real. In this chapter Adam is finally feeling some peace as his tormentor, Hugh Despenser is dead but he is also feeling a certain unease as to the manner of his death. It was not well done (read a particularly gruesome description here) and while Adam wanted him dead he didn’t want him dead like that. But now life goes on and all they have to worry about is the imprisoned Edward II. Nothing major….

As history rolls out the fictional Adam is seamlessly dropped into the unfolding events to protect his young lord, Edward III. As Edward grows from a teenager to a young man Adam is there to help guide him and teach him – much more than how to handle himself on the battlefield. This closeness between them leads to jealousies among certain members of the court who feel they are superior solely due to their birth. Adam does his best to stay out of the controversies that swirl all around the court but he is soon placed at the center of one murder attempt through no fault of his own and it almost costs him his life.

The history books tell us what happens to Edward II, Edward III, Isabella and Roger Mortimer with dry facts. Ms. Belfrage fleshes out that dry history with a fiction writer’s flourishes. She brings her readers into history with a writing style that makes them feel as if they are in the room with her characters – this is why I enjoy her books so much. There are very few authors I look forward to as I do her. When I enter into her world I feel as if I am dining at the table, riding madly across the field or just walking in a fragrant English garden. So grab one of her books and settle in – you will laugh, you will cry, you will cringe and you will turn the last page with a sense of loss. Loss because you won’t want to leave the characters and their world behind.

Under the Approaching Dark, is the third book in The King’s Greatest Enemy series, which starts in 1327. Edward II has been incarcerated against his will and Queen Isabella and her henchman, Mortimer, flaunt their love affair before a court which neither accepts nor condones their illicit relationship, which, to some onlookers, goes beyond the bounds of common decency. The young king, Edward III, still little more than a teenager needs to look to his own men-at-arms for the love and support which is so often lacking in his relationship with his mother and Mortimer. With the announcement of Edward II’s death in captivity, Isabella and Mortimer’s political ambition once again plunges the country in turmoil.

It was a real delight to meet up again with the main protagonist of this series. Adam de Guirande is now firmly placed as one of the young King’s most loyal supporters and together with his beautiful wife, Kit, Adam is right at the very heart of the political conspiracy which fills the story with so much excitement and adventure. Plots, counter plots, intrigue and danger seem to follow Adam and Kit wherever they go, taking them on a journey which is rich in intrigue and alive with all the loving encounters which we have come to expect from this couple’s passionate relationship.

The author has once again given us a beautifully written story which is firmly ensconced in the early fourteenth century. From baronial manor houses to royal palaces, there is a real feeling of authenticity, so much so, you can sense the danger, feel the intrigue and experience all the sights and sounds of medieval life. No historical stone is left unturned and no aspect of medieval life is ignored or glossed over.

Under the Approaching Dark is a joy to read from beginning to end and I am looking forward to catching up with another well planned historical adventure in Book Four of the series - The Cold Light of Dawn, which is planned for 2018.

Book three in the “King’s Greatest Enemy” series brings us into the world of young Edward III while he is squirming under the tutelage of Roger Mortimer. OK, I use the word tutelage loosely; Mortimer is running the kingdom along with Queen Isabel and Edward keeps trying to assert himself, not knowing how (or if) he can shake loose from his unwelcome regent. This is an interesting period of Edward’s life that is often glossed over in favor of his glory days, and Anna Belfrage gives us a fascinating depiction of the cocksure king, making lots of mistakes and learning from every one of them. At the same time, Edward demonstrates that he is (or will be) a man to be reckoned with—commanding and irrepressible. Interestingly enough, our hero Adam de Guirande is beginning to find himself shuffled aside in favor of the king’s younger, and more intimate friends. Oh yes, he is still the king’s primary bodyguard and trainer; in fact, Adam often finds himself more of a punching bag to assuage the king’s more tempestuous outbursts. But as more and more nobles become restless as regards to Mortimer’s heavy-handed rule, Adam is placed in the unenviable position of loving both these fierce protagonists headed for an inevitable collision.

As far as the love interest goes, some readers of historical fiction are enamored with a romantic edge; others of us prefer to sink our teeth into the history and find the romance distracting. Alas, I belong to the latter class of readers and I was a little impatient with the petty jealousies and misunderstandings between Adam and his wife Kit. In the inevitable crisis I found her behavior uncharacteristically foolish; if an enemy was set on murdering me and my husband, I wouldn’t put myself into his power for any reason. However, marital subplots aside, the action and escalating crises provide a powerful story that holds our interest and sets up an irresistible conflict for the next volume. It's very good reading.

I don't think it's a secret that I have been a fan of this author since reading her Graham Saga and I am equally enamoured with The King's Greatest Enemy Series.. Under the Approaching Dark is book three in this series and though you can read as a standalone I highly recommend going back to the beginning with In The Shadow of the Storm as well as Days of Sun and Glory - trust me you won't be disappointed.

The year is 1327, it's a time that I am unfamiliar with making my reading all the more enjoyable as I have no idea what will take place. So I get my dose of entertainment at the same time as being educated . The synopsis above does a great job with the storyline and as usual I will not add to it. Suffice to say my only disappointment with this series is that Adam and Kit are fictional characters. I would've loved for them to be real. They are put in the middle of real historical events with real historical figures bringing history to life.

It is evident the author has done her research not just with this book but with the series. With her attention to detail and her superb descriptive writing I didn't just read the story but I felt it as well. England is in turmoil, a young King is on the throne (before his time) as his father sits in prison and to add more drama the Queen has taken a lover and not just any man but her husband's greatest enemy. It isn't just the country but those around the court who wait and see what takes place next.

Under the Approaching Dark is not just a political story, it is full of tension, uncertainty, bloodshed, and no Anna Belfrage is complete without romance. Her writing style always draws me in, not just with a story I find entertaining but a pose that makes me appreciate her talent as a writer.

Definitely a series and author I highly recommend.

Under the Approaching Dark is the third book in Anna Belfrage's The King's Greatest Enemy series. In this book, we return to Adam and Kit's world; one full of intrigue, bitter rivalries, love and family. As always, the writing is excellent and Ms. Belfrage's attention to historical detail is superb. She must do a massive amount of research!

I have always liked Adam but I think I like him a lot more after this book. I feel like the reader got to know Adam a little bit more in this book and I really enjoyed that. It was really interesting to watch him try to balance his loyalties to the king, his family and to Mortimer. He is really in a tough position in this book but he managed to handle it as well as could be expected. And since I'm talking about characters, I have to mention Godfrey. Ms. Belfrage does not disappoint with her villains; she writes the best (or worst) villains ever. With Despenser gone, there needed to be a new bad guy and Godfrey fills those shoes pretty well.

This book also did a lot of foreshadowing for the next book (at least that's what it felt like). There was this underlying current throughout the story that something big is coming and everyone needs to be prepared for it. By the time I got to the end of the story, I was ready for the 4th book to be out so I could dive right in.

Under the Approaching Dark is another example of Ms. Belfrage's storytelling expertise. It was a great read and I can't wait to see what happens next for Adam and Kit! 4 stars.

Friends, I have literally been pacing the floor, waiting for the day that I could share this book with you. Most of you know how utterly obsessed I am with English history; specifically the Tudor Era. However, I haven't studied much of history before the birth of Elizabeth Woodville, and thus was greatly intrigued by the setting of Under the Approaching Dark. The story centers around Adam de Guirande and his wife, Lady Kit in the era of Edward III in the early 1300's. Adam and Kit and a host of other characters are fictional, but they interact with historical figures throughout the entire book.

This history nerd was hooked. Literally obsessed. I couldn't put it down! And when I had to put it down (because real life), I was thinking about the characters and their plights.

This book is phenomenal! I haven't read the first two books in the series yet (though I will be, you can count on that) but it was still pretty easy to pick up the storyline. I was intrigued right away, and fell in love with the characters immediately. I adore the way Anna Belfrage writes. I could so easily picture what she was describing; I could hear the sounds and imagine the sights. I could comfortably step into the characters' shoes, and experience what they were experiencing. It was such a magnificent escape into another world, with fiction and history weaved together flawlessly.

Bottom Line: Get it. Get the book. Right now. Also get the first two.

Adam and Kit are still trying to come to terms with their son’s death in the previous book and it also brings some strains into their marriage. Tom died when they were away and they never saw the body so there is the possibility that he is alive and Kit clings into that believe. But despite the circumstances of the start of their marriage, they have grown to love each other and are able to move on from these hard times.

But Adam is finding it ever more difficult staying loyal to both the young King and Mortimer. Edward is growing more frustrated because his mother Queen Isabella and Mortimer are holding the real power but as Edward grows older it becomes clear that sooner or later there will be a confrontation since its less than likely that Mortimer will just hand over the power. In the end, who will Adam serve?

I love that Edward III is getting more scenes in this book. I thought it was well presented how he dealt with the death and stuff concerning his father Edward II. Some conflicting emotions there! I’m so glad that he’s marriage to Philippa starts off well and I like how she is portrayed.

I’m also really starting to like Thomas of Brotherton. There’s so little written about him and I love how big role he has in this. And it’s great for Adam to have such a friend.

Another great book from the author and I can’t wait for the next book! I want to see how it goes between Edward and Mortimer.

So interesting!

Well this early 14th century period in England during King Edward II's abdication of the throne to his 14-year-old son Edward III is quite the drama...better than a modern day soap opera in my view. A lot of history packed into this third book of the series. The author does a great job explaining the political aspects of a very convoluted set of circumstances and using fictional characters she has me riveted to the storyline. Adam and Kit are a couple whose lives are not their own being committed subjects of the young King Edward III and his very young, new wife Queen Phillipa with a hovering dowager Queen Isabella and her illicit lover Lord Mortimer overseeing the kingdom and calling the shots.
This author has made the story much more understandable as the country is torn this way and that and its people are the recipients of one war after the other as the rich and powerful lords of the land plot, spy and murder for greed and power and jealousy abounds.
I truly enjoy this series and very much look forward to the next installment which is said to be published sometime early 2018......a very long time to wait after what all that has happened up to now. I highly recommend the series to readers of historical fiction....nothing boring here.

This book has received a Discovering Diamonds Review:
"The atmosphere of the 14th century is superbly captured ... What comes over brilliantly is the position of Edward himself: not quite old enough to rule in his own right, frustrated that he cannot do so and impatient for the time when he can.
Ms Belfrage is an established author and this wonderful novel adds highly to her already respected reputation."

I cannot agree highly enough with our DDRevs reviewer - a superb novel by a superb author

WOW! Book #3 was just as good as the other 2!

I have to say I have never ever read a series straight through . I’m on to the next book #4. I hope the author puts our book #5 before I finish . I would definitely recommend this book to everyone but there are sex scenes & extreme violence as well. So I will recommend it to ALL adults!
The author , Anna Belfrage is an incredible writer. I really love reading about this time period and she has done a tremendous job.
Well I’m off to the 4th Book!!

Another great story by Anna. I love this series and am looking forward to more books about Adam and Kit. Her writing is wonderful and very descriptive. You feel drawn into the book and feel as if you are walking beside the characters. If you haven't read any of her books, you should definitely start today.

Under the Approaching Dark

Adam helping the young king and his wife nabbed and beaten. She was held for seven days before she was found. Thanks to a little boy that now has a new home with Adam and his wife,

OK, this is the third book in the series and the third I loved so finally time for a proper review. I am a sucker for novels in a medieval setting, for stories involving couples (especially married ones) against the world presenting a united front, and am quite fond of anything that will have Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer in the background. Oh, and the lovely mundane bits of medieval living.

So this series is pretty much perfect for me and Adam x Kit forever.

Satisfying

A lovely, nuanced, satisfying read. Anna Belfrage knows how to get under the skin of her characters - and how to put vibrant flesh on the historical bones of the story.

Very intriguing

The continuation of this series doesn't disappoint. Adam has to deal with his love/loyalty to 2 men and to be apart from the love of his life, Kit.
