Liquid Cool #3

NeuroDancer

Rate this book
Has Cruz met his supervillain match in NeuroDancer?

Liquid Cool is a Blade Runner meets the Maltese Falcon. In the next installment of the sci-fi/cyberpunk detective series, author Austin Dragon goes from less frenetic cyberpunk to a smoother, cyber-noir with our hero, Cruz, matching wits with the sultry NeuroDancer. There is always plenty of gritty action, suspense, thrills, and even a few laughs.

It’s the cyberpunk novel reimagined—an ever-rainy world of colossal skyscrapers, hover-cars, flashy neon streets, and futuristic mechanization. Metropolis isn’t a bad place, but it isn’t a good one either. Uber-governments and mega-corporations fight for control of the fifty-million-plus super-city, but so does crime.

“Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful,” she said to him. He should have listened to his instincts when she strolled into his office to hire him. “I knew I wasn’t gonna touch this case with a 10-foot pole. It had danger written all over it, back and front.” But he did take the Case of the NeuroDancer. Is this the private eye story where the bad “guy” rides off into the sunset and the hero lies flat on his back waiting for the meat wagon to fly down in their hoverambulance.

Which is crazier, indeed: the criminal—or the client? Welcome to the high-tech, low-life world of Liquid Cool.

NeuroDancer - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Styled like a 1940s noir tv series, NeuroDancer, Austin Dragon's amazing Book #3 in the Liquid Cool series makes Detective Cruz the new Sam Spade. This third story from Cruz's casebook tells of the eponymous, mysterious NeuroDancer, who's a sexy, sultry dame toying with Cruz to take her case.
Many interesting characters, tense action sequences, cyborgs and psychos and a kidnapping are all involved and Cruz begins to think he'll end up dead in a Metropolis gutter, thanks to taking a case he should have resisted NeuroDancer's lures for.

Move over Sam Spade - there's a new 'tec in the big city - and he's going to bring law and order any way he can (and perhaps make a profit too), to the not-so-merry Meritropolis. Get yours today!

Not Kindle Unlimited, free from one of my freebie book sites and/or directed by one to a perma free. This is more of serialized story, with the first one being even shorter and an introduction, and yes serialized means cliffhangers. Sort of cyberpunk, sorta film noir, sorta detective, sorta futuristic.

Prequel is intro to the High-Tech, Low-Life World, the Detective Cruz, the kidnapping, and always the 'more' to the story. The 'more' is book 1, with tech-tricksters, analog hustlers, and digital gangsters, cyborgs, psychos, and samurais oh god.

Don't have 2 but #3 picks up with villains, super villains, femme fatal, even more {cyber} noir, and this time is it a case of the 'good' guy losing and the bad guy getting it all and maybe his life? These stories have definitely been semi blade runner type with a few more twists. {Would have been better, a little, to have had 2 before reading 3 but still quite enjoyed it.} NOTE: Per my own inclinations and the writer's wishes SPOILER FREE.

Enjoyable, but it seemed a bit more frenetic than previous stories. It got so rushed that at times I thought that some of the material was missing. For all that, there were more editing errors in this story than the others. Still a good series and I intend to read the next entry, and I hope that this was just a blip.

Best read in the series so far...

After reading the first two books in the series, I felt I had an idea of what to expect of these stories regarding the storyline moving forward, however, I was surprisingly yet thankfully proven wrong with this entry. With the unexpected plot twists and change ups in the approaches during the investigations, this was a hard read not to put down. Wanted to finish it in one sitting, but I do most of my reading at night and sleep eventually took over, though not due to the book. I really enjoy this series and will pick up the remaining books in the series shortly.

Collateral damage

Mr. Cruz has a way of dismantling major institutions in Metropolis along the way as he's trying to find out why someone's trying to kill him. If they had just left him alone they might have been fine. But they didn't. The author continues to find inventive ways to keep this series exciting.
