Worker. Trade Agent. Slave. Etain Ixtii detests the labels others give her, but there are some things she must accept. She was genetically designed to do specific tasks. Her breeding instincts interrupt her life every forty-five days. But workers like Etain are taught not to question so when she returns from training questioning her home world Gno's profit-based caste system, she risks her life. She doesn't want to be an agent and doesn't want to cross through the wormhole to never return. Why does she have to go? Can't someone else?

Usurer Serria, the owner of Etain's birth and training debt, quickly tires of her problem worker and launches Etain through a collapsing wormhole so she can collect the insurance payout. Very bad business indeed, but Etain manages to survive the attempt, arriving on the other side plagued by debilitating headaches and hounded by a dangerous insectoid enemy that no one, including Leigheas Sternbow, the Takla royal physician, and Mercine Feney, the Empire's powerful female leader, can make disappear.

Surrogate is a fantastic piece of Science Fiction. The story is set in other worlds, although parts of it feel all too familiar to our own world, especially the part about a society based on debt. The writing thought provoking and engaging. The protagonist is relatable as she struggles to find her footing in a new world and come to grips with her home-world. Her adjustment to a world that has choices is a masterful handling of when cultural differences clash. I had never stopped to think about how things like passive resistance can be both submissive and dominant depending on culture. The story moves easily between worlds, and the worlds are extremely well constructed and fleshed out. I wanted to finish this book sooner, but the real world got in the way. I look forward to following Etain more in her journeys.

I have been following this author since her last series. I would have to say that her writing style has changed for the better. I really liked that the authors protagonist is not the normal white male that you find in so many other sci-fi books. It was also refreshing to get away from the dystopian story line that you see so much these days. It was fast paced and very tight writing style that gave you the information that you needed when you needed it. No information dumping. I also liked the cliff hanger endings to the chapters so you find yourself saying just one more chapter over and over again. The story line was very thought provoking, as told from the protagonists point of view, about a world based on birth and training debt. I liked that you were able to see her go from this belief system to the belief system of another world where everyone has choices. We see her grow to a strong woman fully capable of taking care of herself but depending on family and friends. She is thrust then into returning to her world to fight for the people of her world. Exciting ride and I can't wait to see what is to become of Etain.

On finishing this book, all I can say is, wow. It's a journey into an incredibly detailed and complex world. Set aside some time for this one because it takes time to become fully immersed. There's no warning: readers are thrown right into the deep end. All the world-building unfolds slowly over time as Etain reveals herself and her history.

I prefer books that take me right into the thick of things. I don't need pages of explanatory text or for each new discovery (technology, political system, social mechanics) to be given the same weight as character development. It was easy enough to understand Etain's home world as well as the world in which she ends up without all that. Of much more interest were the intricacies of her various relationships to other beings.

Roughly the first half or a bit more is devoted to Etain acclimating to her new surroundings. This includes the development of her romantic, sexual, and friend relationships. Although there is some tension with the insects she's unintentionally brought with her from her home world, this is largely more interpersonal and character development. The second half has much more of the action and political intrigue. I liked the contrast.

During the relationship-building stage, I appreciated the differences in how Etain views things compared to the others. I loved how each of their personalities comes into play as they all learn what Etain needs from them. There's no descriptive sex, but there's plenty of sensuality that ranges from delightfully playful to soft and tender. The characters are creating a life with each other, and although we only see through Etain's eyes, we still get a sense of the feelings of the people she's with.

The characters are all well-drawn and three-dimensional, even the villains. I think Dresh might be my favorite, but it would be a challenge to explain why without spoilers. Userer Serria is a terrific Big Bad, and I love the way the story arc ends (or rather, doesn't quite). It will be exciting to see what happens in the next installment.

All of the things I loved about this (single point of view, lots of character development, world-building throughout the story, cliffhangers) are things that other readers may enjoy less. However, the writing style is excellent, and those elements all come together well to weave an outstanding tale. I'm looking forward to the next part of the series.

For wonderful characters, just the right amount of world-building, and a gripping story, this gets 10/10 fountain pens.

Fantastic characterization, and a truly wondrous amount of world-building. There were a few oddities to the plot, leaps-of-faith required to accept certain things, but overall enjoyable.

You can say one thing about "Surrogate” by Jeanne G'Fellers, it makes you keep reading. The imagination of the author opens not one, but three distinct, richly detailed worlds. The first one, Gno, is the planet of the harsh climate and even harsher social structure where the workers are saddled up with unplayable “birth debt” into virtual slavery. A considerable attention is paid to the creation of convincing inner logic of the book, with the biology, politics, and economics of the world carefully thought out. The is compelling, the narration is fast-paced, and every page brings a new event or a new twist.
The plot focused on Etain Ixtii, a slave worker of mixed genetics, shackled by inhumane indoctrination and if that was not enough, she was bred to undergo irresistible sexual urges every 45 says. Against her will, she is forced to go to another world as a trade agent, but her spiteful owner tries hard to ensure that Etain would not survive the trip. Yet she does and finds herself doubting that everything she knew and almost every conviction she held.
The book is not, perhaps, for everyone. Some readers might find uncomfortable the ever-present sex themes including rape, even though they are never graphic. Sexual interests are indiscriminate of age, species, number of participants, or gender, and in one way or other every important scene is affected by it.
The plot is complex, cohesive and concisely written and delivers a fascinating story. That said, the book has its flaws. For one thing, it would test reader's credulity in several all-too-convenient situations. For example, I found it hard to believe that a foreign alien, suspected of committing a crime, would be placed in the royal infirmary, and free to interact with members of royal family. Another major suspense of disbelief would be needed to accept the ease with which people of her new home trusted Etain’s word about insectoids that arrived with her. I mean, they are huge, canning and murderous, but even folks whose loved ones they killed do not question Etain.
I was not quite satisfied with the claims of Etain professional prowess. She is a trade agent, and supposedly a good one, but all her activity happens off page. I only remember one sentence that “six contracts were made”, without ever referring to what they are or what challenges they presented.
Etain except for her inborn susceptibility to periods of sexual voracity, has no negative traits. I can’t remember a character of significance who could resist Etain’s allure during heat periods. But Etain herself appears to be immune to others in the same condition. It is fine to have an attractive protagonist, but universal popularity is a bit too much.
Nevertheless, like most of the characters, the protagonist is memorable and has plenty of charisma to win reader's sympathy. Even when you close the book, the image of Etain, singing every morning to the distant stars of her former world, stays vividly in your memory.

Thought-provoking book. Birth and training debt that you spend your life working to repay? The author provides an excellent look at diverse cultures and the fact that our cultural expectations form the basis for so much of our perception/judgment of others. After numerous trials, tribulations, and challenges, the protagonist prevails and all seems good. I love happy endings; just don't read the epilogue as there seems to be something foreboding there. The writing is fast-paced and occasionally the story uses flashbacks. Kudos to the author for bringing us something completely new!

A fascinating universe experiences through Etain’s senses as Etain discovers who and what she is; first in a world which becomes her home and a world which was her home. She develops an intricate network of relationships with specific titles and the roles to play as she copes with the instictive urges of She-Beast, the embodiment of a specific lust and need strong enough to have an identity of her own. Etain finds herself a nexus of communication between various species which reveal themselves to her; a mystery, and a pivotal figure challenging the injustices in each of her worlds. Enemies becomes allies, friends, and even lovers; confusing her as she faces the dynamic changes in a world becoming home; and the dysfuctional dangers of the world she left behind. Violence, death, and various form of sex weave themselves around her; as she comes to fight, question, and learn from all them, educating others in turn. She takes the reader on a life-threatening, cruel, and loving journey, punctuated by surprising moments of wit. It’s breathtaking to watch Etain endure, fight, and correct with those she encounters while on this journey.

I... wanted to like this. There were several points where I thought I would. But I never quite crested that hill to get into a flow with the story. The reading process became a chore, and since the story shifts gears and locations several times, my mind reset every time and forgot the loose threads that were waiting for resolution in the previous setting.

This is a bit like five or so short stories set in the same world, that are only nominally connected by a single character. It might have been more successful that way, but since none of the characters were particularly strong or notable, I don't know who would have carried each section. As it is, the main character was a total blank slate for me. I can't name an identifying personality trait.

On the flip side, the world and the alien races were great ideas and were pretty well explored. The idea of birth debt and an entire society built on repayment of endlessly accruing debt... well. Not that that's relevant or anything... But I thought the native psychology was pretty well conveyed. And the debt psychology was allowed to confront "born free" psychology without becoming a caricature. (The way characters broke out of that psychology wasn't convincing to me, but what can you do?)

I wound up skimming the last 15% or so, since the story seemed to be wrapping up firmly in "neat fairytale ending" territory. "Shocking revelations" is not my thing at all.
