Rise

Rate this book
From multi-published novelist, Katherine L. Evans, comes a story about recognizing your worth and rising above your circumstances.

In this unforgettable, heartrending story, the impact of childhood abandonment is revealed in the life of a young woman who yearns for something both inexplicable and intangible.

Emma Abercrombie, an inexperienced reporter with lofty aspirations, grew up a bullied outcast in a small town in South Carolina, fled to California after high school, and once there, she believed the worst was behind her. But after two years in a dead-end job and one too many disappointments in her personal life, Emma becomes desperate and manic as she takes matters into her own hands and kicks her career into high-gear.

At the height of her success and despite concern from her loved ones, she accepts an assignment abroad covering the refugee crisis in Syria. In what was intended to be a mission to raise awareness and win hearts and minds, Emma and her team suddenly find themselves fellow victims of the danger and tragedy they were only supposed to be reporting. Emma is ultimately faced with the most basic of choices—whether to live or whether to die, to lie down and accept her fate, or to stand up and rise.

Rise is the gripping tale of one woman’s journey to overcome a life that kicked her when she was down at every turn. It is a heartbreaking story of loss, a heartwarming portrait of unwavering friendship and unconditional love, and a compelling glimpse into the conditions of the current displacement crisis of the Syrian Civil War.

100% of the author's royalties from this novel will be donated to charities benefiting Syrian refugees and to organizations working to improve safety conditions for conflict journalists.

I do love a good story about a Phoenix. And that is what Emma is. This is both a beautiful and tragic story about a woman who had to rise from the ashes, die, rise from the ashes, repeat.

But it's not just Emma's story, but the story of the people of Syria, whom Emma is forever changed by. Katherine L. Evans allows me to enter Syria, in the comfort and safety of my own home. It is an important story that the author is sharing, and one that needs to be heard and felt. My heart, even more so, goes out to the people of Syria who are fighting to survive in the midst of an ongoing geopolitical battle. It is obvious that this is an issue that is near and dear to Katherine's heart, and it is reflected in her story. The book offers insight and is enlightening. And I think it's absolutely wonderful that all the proceeds from this book go to Syrian aid organizations.

Many tears and smiles, and I struggled to put the book down. It is a story that will stay with me for a very long time.

There are some books you read and instantly forget. And then there are others you read that stick with you and change you from within. RISE is definitely the latter. I wouldn't consider this book chick lit - no...it deserves to be up there with dramatic, war-time literature like Courage Under Fire. Ms Evans has created a sphere, a family, of truly relatable and lovable characters that by the end of the book feel like they are part of you. I've never found myself relating on some level to all of the major players in a book like I did RISE. While the dramatic nature of the store might turn some off to reading it...please don't let that determine it for you. Ms. Evans meticulously tells the story of Emma's capture and subsequent torture without being too overtly detailed in it - you'll be there in the depths of the darkness with Emma while still reaching for hope and cheering her on to RISE from the brokenness hatred and war can cause.

The writing in the beginning bothered me a bit with how juvenile it sounded, but I soon really really got into it and could not put it down. I read it in a day and cried through the last 8th of the book. Surprised at how good it was and thankful for the recommendation!

So, this is my review as a French reader! I first have to stay that I love the way it is written, there is a lot of words that I did not know the meaning in English and it has helped me improve my English vocabulary! I am really thankful for this! About the book, I haven't finished it yet, but so far, my favorite characters are Emma, Grace and Austin and my least favorite is Vern(yes I am still at the beginning of the book haha!) I love the " relation " between Emma and Austin, mainly when he calls her " baby " and when she does not like it haha! I sincerely hope they'll end up being in a relationship for good throughout the story! I also like the friendship between Grace and Emma, we can easily notice that Grace cares for her friend and that Emma can rely on her! And by the way, there is quite a few descriptions in this book, that's a good thing because it gives the reader the ability to imagine it in their mind. Well, I am going to keep reading and when I'll be done with it, I'll be back to submit another review! :)

A Tour de Force of Suffering and Perseverance
Stunning, dark, uplifting, well researched, and immersive! I was blown away by the development of the story, the characters, and the depth of pain that Evans manages to achieve! Not a light read by any means, but worth the journey! In typical Evans style she takes the reader to a low point, but does not necessarily give you an easy or clean resolution. Like life the journey is messy and fraught with human frailty, but held together by spider silk tensile strength.

As a Middle East expert I found Evans' portrayal of Syria believable and insightful. Evans captures the pain, vast emptiness, and despair of the an ancient land torn to shreds by civil war where half the population has been forced to leave their homes! Her love for Syria and its people is evident as is her belief in the goodness of people despite all the evil she explores.

Emma's fight

In the beginning and pretty much throughout this story, I'm torn between wanting to "slap some sense" into "Abs" and wanting to squeeze hug her until she "feels" something, true and good. Then I remember life and people aren't quite so simple. We just have to be patient, strong, forgiving and steadfast for those we love. That's how we "Rise" Thank you Katherine Evans.
