The Mountain Shifters #7

His Reformed Omega

Rate this book
Can a reformed villain and a hardened soldier find their happily ever after?

Connor grew tired of being used and abused by twisted alphas, so he became a legend. Under the guise of Cutter, the omega survived life in a brothel known as the Parlor, won his freedom and built a vast criminal empire. He might have done it all for the love of his long-lost brother, but years of ruling the underworld that once ruled him have left him cold and ruthless--just the way he likes it. When Connor is captured by his brother's new pack and imprisoned, he's given an unexpected second chance to earn back his freedom, but is it worth the cost of being mated to an alpha?

Duke is an alpha on a mission. He doesn't have the time or the desire to bed an omega, not when he's too busy saving them. As the new leader of the Tribunal Task Force, imprinting on the most infamous criminal in Federation history is the worst thing that could happen to his career. The only problem is, Cutter is as beautiful as he is toxic and Duke is finding it harder and harder to stay away. When social pressure from the Council forces the Mountain Ridge Alpha to integrate his unusual prisoner into pack life, Duke faces an impossible choice: Claim his omega and risk losing everything, or let him fall into the hands of another alpha.

Connor is no docile omega waiting to be rescued, but Duke just might prove to be the alpha he needs--and the only one he can't control.

Oh, wow! The series just got better! I was so on edge during the entire read, my heart is finally saying thank you to the author to let me have a breath.

The plot just got so sweet. And the writing has improved a lot! I got all the things I had been left wanting at the end of the previous two books.

Connor had gained some sympathy from me when I got to read about the details of his gruesome past, but the author went one step further and made me fall in love with him. Duke was such a strong, caring (after he got his head on right!) alpha, and the couple's journey from indifference and ignorance to blissful love was a very enjoyable one.

The kids and their personalities were a great addition to read about. The role every single character played in the book was well thought out and interesting to read about. I am so happy after having read this, there are no words to describe.

This book has firmly placed the author and this series on my radar, but I'll say this. It's only the Mountain Ridge family that gets me high after I read the blurbs. But I am ever grateful to my sane self for picking up "His Second Chance Omega", as it brought Cutter to my door. And the rest, they say, is history! ;)

P.S. - The number of typos in this one was EXTREMELY HIGH! I just wish the author got a decent editor to make the journey of reading such an interesting series even more enjoyable. But this is still the bestest and best-written book of the series so far!

P.P.S. - I thank the author for telling us that the series will continue and also who the characters will be. I hope the level of excitement and intrigue of the plot continues on this high tide only.

And this is how you can redeem a character...with insight and personal reflection and accepting culpability for the things done wrong and then trying to do better.

Gah, I knew this one was gonna be a difficult sell. I honestly didn't think there was any way to make Connor (Cutter) a likeable character, but damn. By the end it all made so much sense.

(Check out my notes and highlights.)

I would have to say I was set not to like Connor/Cutter but this turned out to be my favorite book in the series so far and Connor one of my favorites as well!! Besides the story itself with learning of Connors past and his acceptance of his new life and feelings it was nice to read more of Toval, Mel and Hassan relationship and how much it grew from the last book. I loved how they truly excepted each other plus I loved that Hassan marked both Mel and Toval. I seen a different side of Mel in this book with his interactions with his mates and his brother Connor. I liked that the brothers were so protective of each other and the closest they shared with one another. All in all there were many different parts in this book that made it my favorite but I also enjoyed that the author brought in many of the other main characters from the previous books as well. 😊 This was a truly amazing read for me.

Enjoyable instalment in this series - a good old fashioned enemies to lovers, even if the enemies bit was a tad short. Clearly sets up book 8 at the end, but has a solid HEA that satisfies.

OMG I think this is my FAVORITE book in the whole series! And I was totally not expecting that because I didn't think I would like Connor, but boy was I so wrong. I just LOVED him!

This book takes place a few years after the last one, (I think 4?) And you definitely should read the previous books in this series since there is a lot of overlap and continuation. I'm SO glad we got to see more with Mel, Hassan, and Toval (so happy for their nice surprise and how settled they all are in their relationship), and that Connor finally found a family with them and their friends.

Duke was perfect for Connor, and they had a great connection, and great chemistry, together. Connor was previously known as Cutter, and was really the villain in previous stories. Well, the author totally redeemed him, made me love him, and root for his HEA with Duke. And I loved him and Mel together, how their brotherly relationship was repaired. I also loved that some time has passed and the kids are growing up, and there are new characters and new challenges coming up - a war is looming, and it's a perfect set up for the next book(s).

I will agree with another review - there were definitely some typos and mistakes. It didn't detract from the reading experience too much, but this was SUCH a good story, these mistakes shouldn't slip through.

I HIGHLY recommend this series! Each book gets better and better and I just love these characters. Can't wait for the next one!

A blatant instance of dishonest marketing. The blurb flaunts two of the most entertaining tropes in MM romantic writing - enemies to lovers and reformation of a hard-to-love villain -; unfortunately, the book by and marge fails to deliver on those promises, cortesy of the usual morasses-like English prose that blunts the edge of whatever risks the author decided to take with the characterization of the formerly evil hero, the weak character portrayal of the leads, and the extreme blandness of what little passes off for an evokation of the pack du jour. There is not much to feed from in the Alpha protagonist, so one can only be appreciative of his being outstripped by Mel's demon brother of an Omega at every turn; alas, for someone who used to be a formidable foe under the (ridiculous) moniker of Cutter, Connor appears far too mellow and not nearly as spirited and indomitable, temper- and brains-wise, as the events in the previous book misled one into believing. To get meekness and despondency and mushy sentimentality from a character supposed to be a sheer force of evil after just a few months of relegation into a not unfriendly pack, not only means a major rupture from the overarching intrigue of at least the two preceding novels; this sudden retconning collapses the entire interest of this instalment, as alas his love story comes as a plume of smoke without any fire - all sugar and no substance. I am very aware that the handling of a villain is something not quite easy to master in credible fashion, witness the horrendous writing of Jeremy Tate in Shannon West's Bad Wolf (Dark Hollow Wolf Pack #12), which similarly, and clumsily, attempts to whitewash him; yet if one feels unable to manage such a literary feat, why on earth, I wonder, use such a plot device? I am not sure I will go on with this series, as the present instalment was the one which attracted me to this universe.

i’m pretty sure there were exactly TWO scenes of duke and connor interacting with each other before the 75% mark………….😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 like huh ?????? how is there so much story without them talking or even being in the same room pls!!!!!! like scene one, they met at the party and they fucked. scene two, duke tried to ask connor if he could court him. and then NOTHING……..HOW??? how is this even possible!!!! i’m just flabbergasted lmfaoooooo and then the third time they interact, they’ve decided to be together and they apparently love each other like huhuhhhhhh ???????? oh and btw connor immediately got pregnant from that one time at the party😂😂😂 like stop the madness i can’t handle any more!!!!!! anyway wow this sucked. a book that’s supposed to be about two people falling in love and they only interact twice before 75% ????? how you could ever think to convince anyone these two are in love with basically no interaction the majority of the book is beyond me……you cannot seriously think as an author that duke imprinting on connor and therefore being “fated” mates will be enough to prove they belong together🤦‍♀️ or give them any chemistry💀 oh and this might just be bc i didn’t read the previous books, but i didn’t get a single ‘deadly killer vibe’ from connor once…..not once……as in not ONE single fucking time did he come across as someone who is dangerous…….also apparently this author expects me to believe a “hardened criminal mastermind” sticks his tongue out at people💀 what is he, 5??? and there was so much mel, hassan, and toval that i might as well have been reading their book. so in summary: boo!!!!!!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This book: I picked up "His Reformed Omega" (#7) because of His Reclaimed Omega (#9) - Connor in #9 was amazing and I wanted to see his love story. ... And was a bit disappointed. I had hoped Connor would be the unrepentant, if (mostly) reformed, master criminal we seen in book 9 and instead I got an emotional journey from isolation to integration likely exasperated by pregnancy hormones. Likewise Duke was a scary dad in #9 and here he is nearly dangerous, but not quite there. I wanted the buzz of truly bad boys.

Oh well, the story still is strong with the family interaction between Mel and Connor LOL funny at times. Good enough but not what I was hoping for.

***

Series Overview: The Mountain Shifter series is now 12 books long and a 13th is on the way (the review is written in April 2018). I read books 12, 9 and 7 of the series (in that order) in one day. All books of the series promise a HEA ending for that book, no cliffhangers. And, based on what I read, each works as a perfectly good stand-alone, though the world background builds - going from bringing down crime bosses, to secret wars, to business espionage. A rich full world.

Problems with the series: I don't recommend reading more than two or three back-to-back. The author doesn't vary the sex scenes much, and the characters, while unique in histories and and goals, don't have unique speaking voices and so blend if read close together (such as reading three books in 12 hours). Another issue is every book has at least two homonym proofreading errors - like vile instead of vial and similar, other easy-to-miss issues. Since the homonym actually sounds like the word, it hardly slows down the reading at all. Third issue is the power of M-M romances is the two characters being equals instead of dealing with genetically and society imposed class differences - in all the books I read, the romance was between an Alpha and an Omega - with the Alphas all at least a head taller, stronger, and emotionally disconnected (as is expected) and the Omegas all shorter, weaker, emotionally open, and have the ability to get pregnant (this series is not just M-M. but nearly always MPreg). Umm - if you want to write a M-F romance, just do it - don't present it as a M-M romance. Reading the books back-to-back as I did made this issue noticeable and annoying. On the plus side the author does an excellent job of presently smart characters as smart - not superbrains who can do all things, but people who work at learning skills and discovering ideas, have specializations, and perfectly capable of making bad choices - but for well-thought out reasons. I'm willing to forgive a lot in a story which has smart people who are real instead of the typical movie presentation.

Series Overall view - A rich, ever-changing world with political and societal changes as a backdrop for some excellent romances. For best enjoyment, read one a week and savor the differences as the world evolves.

3,5*

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:
A 3,5* is clicked with a 4* but in review marked as 3,5*:

5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-Away-book like ‘Jesse's Smile’ or ‘Joey’ from Angelique Jurd, ‘Save the the kids’ series
from EM Leya, ‘Love’s Tethered Heart’ from C.L. Etta or ‘Liberty’ from Seth King),
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often reread and is a WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises (like most of Andrew Grey books and Davidson Kings 'Haven Hart'-series)
it's like an A

3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few times (most romances where you can enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in
hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It's like an B+

3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader (2-3 times a year),
it's like a B

2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-reader (I wouldn't recommend it heartily, but it was ok)
It's like a C-, D

1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an absolute NO-GO). It's like failure in the
whole line, dismissed, repeat the class

What a totally refreshing and engrossing surprise!

This is, by far, the best of this series so far! I have to confess that I have been quite critical of some of the other books in this series but this author has improved and this was an intelligently sophisticated portrayal of a character I was unsure I wanted to know. But Connor is my favourite. Most omegas end up being a softer vulnerable character which smothers any other possibilities as a strong character (at least in my own mind).
But Conners past and complex personality showed a highly intelligent and strength of character I don't see often in this genre.
Fabulously well done and also had more depth due to being longer than previous books, this allowed more time to see his transformation which we needed to see.
I am unsure I wish to read the rest of the series though, mainly because I've seen glimpses of reviews and reveals about future stories being based on the children of these characters. I'm not sure I can go from attachments on these with tiny children to having them as adults who have their own romances (but then that's just me)

Really good read.

I really enjoy this series and was happy that we finally get Cutters story and it's one of the best books in the series.

Connor is serving life in prison for the things he did as Cutter but the Mountain Ridge Alpha has a plan to help Connor and that's for him to be mated to an Alpha of his choosing. Duke knows Connor is his mate but is to scared to act on it until he hears that Connor is to be mated and he can't let that happen but is he brave enough to take what is his and will Connor even be receptive to the idea that Duke is his destined mate.

Recommended.

When I started reading this story I was impressed, really. But the more I read, the more I started to feel at a loss. I am not in mood to write a review, even, because I am exhausted. This story tired me. All that I can say is that the "build" of this story is unbalanced in comparison with its "structure" ...
I don't know how it ended though because I lost interest in the second part and didn't feel like reading the ending anymore.

I rate it just 2 stars because a book that doesn't hold my interest enough isn't good enough. I am generous, usually I rate 1 star the books I don't complete... but like I said above, in the start I was impressed but it didn't last.

Wow He's Changed

Cutter was a very bad boy; now he's Conner and his Omega gene's are acting up. Goes to a party has wild sex with future partner. Then later finds out he is pregnant.

A good continuation of the Mountain Shifters story. The characters are well developed and written. It needs a bit of editorial tweaking. This has good insight into nature versus nurture. Connor's tale is wonderfully told.

Things are really building in this series! I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get behind Connor’s redemption arc, but I love the way it’s all come together. This story is a satisfying conclusion to his storyline, and I can’t wait to see what’s next in this series.

This is the first one of this series that I've read, and I am impressed. I wish we had less of Mel and his two mates (menage is unrealistic in the extreme, and that's coming from someone who loves mpreg).

update: Ho-boy. The rest of this series might be a little too effing bananas for me to deal with...

Connor, the master mind omega, Mel’s brother, aka Cutter, have been the prisoner of the Mountain Ridge alpha for the last two years.

Mitchel, Angel & Mel wants to give him a chance for “a new life”, to kill the legend and get the wolf council out of his ass. Basically, he needs to find a mate.

Duke is Mel replacement at the Federation of wolves tribunal. He imprinted on Conner while visiting the prison. He is sent to report on potential alpha for Connor but things do not goes as he plan when the omega fall in need.

I did not think I would like this book as much. I am usually not a fan of redemption arc. Connor was quite funny, and he make a nice couple with Duke, those two have great chemistry, even if I wanted to smack them on the head couple of time. Miscommunication is a recurring theme in this book series.

Great story

Built onto the last story. Even though this story was about two new guys. Had a hard time putting it down. Can't wait for the next one.
