Paralegal Olivia Stone knows there’s more to life than billing and briefs. She follows her sweet dreams and enters a harvest contest, pinning her hopes on her strawberry preserves. She walks away with a blue ribbon, a job offer, and a sizzling attraction to farmer, Theo Harper. Eager for a change, she accepts the job and moves out to Theo’s farm.
With a battered heart and a poet’s soul, Theo is happiest alone in the fields. He is content with his blog and his plants, until Gran gets sick. He needs help, and when Olivia shows up, with her organized plans and her tight jeans, demanding his attention, sparks fly in the kitchen, and the bedroom, and the barn… But Theo is determined to keep the blazing heat from thawing his heart.
Adjusting to her new job and her overwhelming attraction to Theo isn’t easy for Olivia. Her career and her heart are on the line, and she struggles to let go of her rigid need for control. She doesn’t want to walk away from a future with Theo, but she needs more from him than lust. Theo will have to be brave enough to give love a second chance.
As a young woman, Eva Moore loved nothing more than to dive between the pages of a romance and lose herself in the story. They were perfect for avoiding midterms and report cards. She even met her husband while reading a book. About the time the second baby came along though, she found she had little time for diving into anything but laundry. Missing her stories desperately, she began to make up her own. The stories she played with in her mind while she washed dishes and changed diapers eventually made their way onto the page, and she was hooked. Eva now lives in Silicon Valley, after moving around the world and back, with her college sweetheart, her three gorgeous girls, and two Shih Tzus who think they are cats. She can be found most nights hiding in her closet/office, scribbling away, and loves to hear from the outside world.
Where do I even begin? I'm fairly new to contemporary romance (Definitely a historical fan, through & through), so I've been treading lightly. Until I found Eva Moore. I read the first in this series pretty quickly, but was excited to make my way through since I was immediately drawn to the 'Girls Night Out' theme, and following these girls on their adventures and quests for love. But this book? This book is perfection. Eva's characters are beautiful, they're ambitious, they're flawed, they're stubborn, and they're REAL. This story felt like it could have easily happened to one of my best girlfriends - I often times have trouble picturing the settings of some stories because of my own lack of experience with certain places or what have you, so I tend to get really wrapped up in the physical appearances of the characters. But this book, I was able to do it all. I saw the farm. I saw the kitchen. I saw Theo, I saw Olivia, I saw Gran... I was truly removed from the chaos of my own life around me (packing up an apartment in a week, I was reading instead - oops) and found myself standing on the farm, watching it all unfold around me as I read every word. I could relate to Liv on a certain level - not as Type A, but the need for answers from a seemingly unwilling partner, whatever the case was emotionally, I felt it with her. Same for Theo - all that fear. I rarely like to ramble so I'm just going to cut myself off here and just say this: Read this book. Read the first to get a glimpse (also a great story), but this one should come on the heels of Someone Special should you choose to start there. I love these characters, this is going on my re-read shelf (as long as my Kindle will allow it). Kudos to you reading this far ;)
Second Chances is a great romance. I love a book where the people are real, not perfect, and you can feel the setting in every bit of the story. Both Olivia and Theo have insecurities that come from having parents who left, at a young age. It's hard to trust and love if the people who are supposed to love you unconditionally, leave you. Are you worth it? Is love worth it? Liv handles these insecurities and the anxiety that it produces, with a heavy amount of OCD control over her life. She has to plan, she has lists, every little detail is worked out. Theo handles his insecurities with a big fat wall built around his heart and burying himself in the hard physical labor of farm. When they meet and sparks fly immediately, it looks like this will be just a fling. Suddenly, though, Olivia is pursuing a dream and working at Theo's farm. The story is how the romance goes from a fling to actual love and really building a life together. And oh yeah, sexy times along the way, too.
Starting with Olivia, while I understood her anxiety, I also wanted to shake her for acting like a brat a few times. She organized her plans to such a degree that she had no flexibility when something else happened on the farm. She also never took 2 seconds to ask questions and learn about the farm, but sure was demanding of Theo to take 2 seconds and talk to her. Finally she gets it when she spends time working on the farm herself, only to lose it the next day over some unplanned but necessary purchase. I was really frustrated with Liv at this point. Thankfully she continues to grow and her introspection is really good. Also, Moore does a particular great job with is demonstrating all the ways that Olivia controls her anxiety. It's not just about lists, it's about the control Olivia gains with those lists, and how she manages her own expectations and next steps with all her planning. All of these steps go into helping her control her anxiety. It's really well done. So I was balancing the anxiety stuff with where Olivia's personality was too focused on her plans and felt self-center. It was a push pull of Olivia's caring personality, as well. Once Olivia recognizes her own lack of knowledge and the need to learn and then uses her own problem solving ability to come up with solutions, it all came together.
Theo is also somewhat frustrating early on, while he stays in his "Gran did everything" mode and lashes out whenever Liv doesn't understand something on the farm. When Liv tells him what he's missed around the farm and asks him to please use some words to explain a problem instead of just assuming she'd know, he acknowledges it and starts to see more of the whole picture instead of just the role he's put himself in. His strong silent type is more about insecurity than just reticence.
I think the friendship between the girlfriends (Oliva, Dani, Stella and Jamie) are always at the heart of this series. They dish out the sarcasm, the optimism when needed and the tough love and hard questions when warranted. They are the best kind of friends. Theo's interactions with his own friend and coworker, Eduardo, are a great mirror to the girls' friendship. Theo needed someone to kick his butt. It's a great view into the different ways male and female friends talk and support each other.
Lastly, Moore has painted a beautiful world on the farm. The poetry that make up the blog posts about the farm life, is evocative and beautiful. You really can feel the change of the seasons, the frustrations when something goes wrong, the deep contentment at witnessing the growth of the crops through to harvest and delivery to customers. I could feel it all, and there is nothing better than a setting that breaths with authenticity.
I highly recommend this one to Moore's fans and anyone looking for a great contemporary romance.
Growing up Olivia Stone has learned to survive with keeping her life organized and using lists to ensure everything has it's place. She's worked herself tirelessly to put herself through school and get to where she is as a paralegal. The job afforded her the money to send to help support her brother through school, and now that he's graduated, Olivia can't see any reason to not try and find what she's passionate about. When she gets the opportunity to start a new job on a farm to help Theo and his grandmother to extend their organic farm line, she snatches up the offer. But having Theo Harper as her boss and the chemistry that sizzles between them makes working difficult for these two.
Theo Harper learned at a young age to guard his heart. After watching his mother drive away from him without a backwards glance he is determined to keep all relationships with women firmly in the "fun" zone but never letting them get close to him. Until he meets Olivia Stone, the one woman who has found a way to worm her way into his life, work, and heart.
I absolutely adored Olivia and Theo's story. For these two to finally find happiness, they must overcome the issues they both have. Can Olivia let loose the reins a bit on life and live a bit more "in the moment" without relying on lists? Will Theo be able to finally open up his heart and see that happiness is in front of him or will the walls he's built around his heart drive Olivia away?
Second Chances is the second in Eva Moore's Girls' Night Out series. It's about Olivia and Theo. She's a paralegal with dreams of finding a niche that feeds her spirit as well as paying the bills. Theo is a farmer whose captivating blog posts reveal hidden depths, but his in-person skills are sometimes lacking.
In Liv and Theo, Ms Moore gives us two very all-too-human characters; they are more than they might seem at first glance, and their vulnerabilities ring true. These two are quite the pair. They have deep-seated wounds that haven't fully healed, and as they spend more time with each other, while their physical chemistry is undeniable, have to find ways to better communicate lest they inadvertently tear the other apart. And when they do, the results are magic.
Ms Moore's characters are beautifully written, and in addition to Liv and Theo's romance, Second Chances also showcases the friendships between Liv and her friends. Second Chances too really demonstrates how words can both hurt and heal, and how being brave can be one of the most frightening and most rewarding things we ever do.
Second Chances stands well alone, but you'll want to enjoy all the books in the series!
This is book 2 in the series Girls' Night out and it just keeps getting better and better. I really enjoyed book one and didn't think another could top it, I am glad I was wrong.
Olivia and Theo were both raised with heart ache and from there they both developed different coping skills. While these skills helped as children, now as adults it is barriers.
I have a love/strong dislike for Theo. This poetic, thoughtful, caring and hard working man at times had the social skills of a 2 year old. I really enjoyed him until he got mad and then the gloves would come off and he would lash out. He has his reasons but my heart broke each time. I loved his relationship with his Gran and the closeness he had with her.
I could relate to Olivia on so many levels, too many actually. Liv is a list maker and planner. She needs order in her life otherwise she spirals. As someone who is like this, it is hard to change your ways and step out of your comfort area. I was so proud when she did and she kept fighting for it.
WOW!!!! I love this book. Strong , dependable Olivia has always been there for her family but to do something that she wants for herself. She entered her jam and chutney into a contest but unknown to her they are accidently destroyed but with a special woman giving her a chance she is back in it. But she is surprised when she meets Theo, her attraction is immediate and his come not far behind. This is a story of 2 strong people facing their own issues and find love together. Don't we all love happy endings?
I really liked Olivia and her determination to achieve her dreams. She's super organized and hard working, but doesn't know if she will find love. I struggled a bit with Theo, a quiet, grumpy farmer with abandonment issues. I liked their chemistry, but when he pushed her away he was just SO mean! Sometimes I felt Olivia forgave too quickly. I loved Gram and Olivia's friends though. Overall, it was an enjoyable read.
I really liked strong, independent, and creative Liv. She really knows what she wants and has the courage to go after it. Theo was ok. I understood why he was relationship-shy but unfortunately I didn’t feel at the end that I knew him too much better than when the book began. The supporting characters really made the story shine. I hope Michael gets his own story.
Eva Moore has an amazing way of intertwining her characters, their lives and their past. She keeps her readers wondering what is coming next, hanging on throughout the entire book. Relationships grow, change, develop in often unexpected ways. I can’t wait to read her next book!
I really enjoyed this book, the second in the series. Making big decisions is hard at the best of times and Theo and Liz have bad past experiences that doesn’t help them move forward in a positive way together. Liv has her GNO friends to point her in the right direction, but can Theo be convinced as well. Can’t wait to read the next book.
I liked this book! I do not suffer from OCD and have never had anxiety like Olivia but it all felt real. I don't think any diagnosis was mentioned but it was talked about how Olivia has sought out many different therapies to handle things, but her anxiety still gets to her. As with the first book in the series, these people felt real. These situations felt possible.
This is a great book. It shows that real life isn't a fairytale that people who love you can hurt you. But that if you try and not run when things get tough or the it hurts good things can come from it. I wish his blog was real I loved the way they were written to include not only his land but real life cant wait to continue this series
This is Ms. Moore second book in this wonderful series. Olivia and Theo, are such beautiful characters, well rounded, enchanting, I absolutely love the author's writing style. She pulls you into the story right from the get go, and believe me its an exciting adventure.
I really enjoyed the dynamic between Theo and Liv. It was different with a lot of back and forth and denial of chemistry. Such a fantastic read that isn't the same as the first in the series. I can't wait to see what comes from from the Girl's Night Out Series.
Another great book this series is amazing. Can't wait to dig into Book 3. If you enjoy Hallmark and Lifetime these books are perfect for you. Easy to get lost in the pages, pure delight to read.
I am so excited to read this series it came at a super rough time for me and just the right time to give me the warm and fuzzy feeling that I needed!!!! Thank you Eva for the GNO series . I am off to find book 3!!
I don't normally read second chance books but this book was good. I haven't read a book by this author but I like her style of writing, will read more of her books. You won't go wrong buying this book.
I loved it from beginning to end! Liv and Theo collided and then had to figure out how to make it work, in a real way. And the passages about the farm were like poetry.
Second chances is the 2nd book in the Girls Night Out seried, and you won't be disappointed. The girls return from Someone Special for a novel full of fun, romance, and a wonderfully written plot. Can't wait for #3!
What I'm liking about Eva's writing is that I feel that I'm in her books. I'm part-Liv, a little bit of Dani, some Stella, and maybe a touch of Jamie as well. When I read her books, I'm thinking, "Been there, done that." As in, literally! My first home in the US was in the Bay Area and so, I feel a thrill every time I read about a place with which I have a familiarity. But, more than the setting, it's what the characters go through when they're falling in love that feels close to home for me--the rush of initial attraction, bursts of doubts, impatience, hopes, fears, hurts, and eventually, the sought-for happiness. This is why I love reading contemporary novels such as Second Chances--they're about me.
