A wrong room, a locked door, and a final opportunity to understand one another
When Fitzwilliam Darcy left Netherfield, Elizabeth Bennet had yet to decipher his character and assumes she will never receive the opportunity to do so until he unexpectedly arrives in Kent where Elizabeth is visiting a friend. Upon their first meeting, Darcy seems different from the arrogant man Elizabeth remembers, and stories she hears from his cousin Anne further confuse her opinion until she overhears a conversation.
Arriving for his annual visit at Rosings, Darcy is both delighted and hopeful when he learns that his aunt's parson has a guest. Having been unable to rid his thoughts and heart of the lovely Miss Elizabeth, he has determined to press his suit. However, when his cousin Richard's attentions are more readily accepted by Elizabeth than his own, Darcy fears he will have to part with the lady he loves forever.
However, fate and scheming relations are not about to let this couple walk away from each other.
Leenie Brown has always been a girl with an active imagination, which, while growing up, was both an asset, providing many hours of fun as she played out stories, and a liability, when her older sister and aunt would tell her frightening tales. At one time, they had her convinced Dracula lived in the trunk at the end of the bed she slept in when visiting her grandparents!
Although it has been years since she cowered in her bed in her grandparents’ basement, she still has an imagination which occasionally runs away with her, and she feeds it now as she did then ─ by reading!
Her heroes, when growing up, were authors, and the worlds they painted with words were (and still are) her favourite playgrounds! Now, as an adult, she spends much of her time in the Regency world, playing with the characters from her favourite Jane Austen novels and those of her own creation.
When she is not traipsing down a trail in an attempt to keep up with her imagination, Leenie resides in the beautiful province of Nova Scotia with her two sons and her very own Mr. Brown (a wonderful mix of all the best of Darcy, Bingley, and Edmund with a healthy dose of the teasing Mr. Tilney and just a dash of the scolding Mr. Knightley).
This is a short, clean but complete story, and it gives us a Lady Catherine who is totally surprising and unique. We have a coerced marriage scenario but it isn't disturbing or unpleasant. We even get a preview of how Charlotte handles her moronic husband. We learn a great deal about some secondary characters.
This is a stand alone story but requires a familiarity with P&P as we jump in at Rosings
Review: I always enjoy Leenie Brown's stories, and this was no exception.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Received an ARC from the author with no promise of a review, positive or otherwise.
This book has the most entertaining, diabolical characterization of Lady Catherine I've encountered. The first scene sets the stage as Colonel Fitzwilliam's aunt pulls him aside for a one-on-one conference and makes an amazing revelation. It would be cruel for me to disclose the content of their conversation and ruin your surprise, but it establishes the tone for the entire book.
Lady Catherine demands that Elizabeth practice the pianoforte at Rosings, and the young gentlewoman gets much more than she bargains for when she follows the imperious lady's directive. Elizabeth also hears more from Anne de Bourgh and Colonel Fitzwilliam to help her sketch Mr. Darcy's character during her days in Kent. And Mr. Darcy himself appears completely different than he did in Netherfield.
It's a fun, well-written tale that ends much the same way it begins with Lady Catherine plotting. Love it!
“Mrs. Jennings was a widow, with an ample jointure. She had only two daughters, both of whom she had lived to see respectably married, and she had now, therefore, nothing to do but to marry all the rest of the world.” Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility
Adorable, clean, quick read that will just make your heart sing. There was no angst, other than the tension of lovers trying to find each other. Lady Catherine was a joy… wait… what??? I did say that and yet, it was true. I adored her. She was cunning, funny, a hoot and a consummate matchmaker. Mr. Darcy did not know what hit him.
It is Easter and we are at Kent and we all know what happens there… only it doesn’t. Everything was knocked off the rail by the machinations of the great lady herself. She had plans for her nephew and they did not include her daughter Anne… wait… WHAT???
“Find someone who loves you enough to forgive you for all of your mistakes.” Debasish Mridha
Elizabeth and Darcy find themselves in a locked room and that gives them time to clear up any and all misunderstandings. You have our dear Colonel, Anne and Lady Catherine combining their talents in order to change the circumstances and the destiny of our dear couple.
We then had a delightful epilogue and a quick sequel titled ‘Not an Heiress’ that let the reader know that Lady Catherine was at it again with her matchmaking. No one was safe. I simply adored her… I think I bit my tongue when I said that.
This is a fairly quick read. Because of the novella format things conclude pretty fast and so feels somewhat hurried. Elizabeth's change of heart seem extremely sudden. But I did like Lady Catherine and the Colonel.
This story takes place in Kent, mainly at the estate, Rosings and we open the story with plotting between Richard and his aunt, Lady Catherine. The lady has a change of character in this tale but she still thinks she knows what is best for those around her.
Our dear couple is maneuvered into a locked suite of rooms (Georgiana and Fitzwilliam Darcy's assigned rooms at Rosings). And the conspirators are making sure no one hears a bell calling nor a door knob rattling. All this so the couple is forced to talk it out. Mr. Collins is the one who comes upon them and he is quick to express his dismay at his cousin's behavior. So why did Lady C. send him to those rooms?
This short story was a sweet read. And at the end we are treated to an excerpt of the next tale, Not an Heiress, in which Lady Catherine continues to her matchmaking with another of the Bennet sisters.
Well written, sweet, romantic book with a lot of warmth. The colonel was particularly adorable, especially in the epilogue.
Enters when Darcy and the colonel arrived at Rosings. There was a twist to Lady Catherine that took me by surprise, love surprises though... Darcy did perceive Elizabeth's dislike of him and he did put his foot in his mouth but meddling relatives saved the day... Ends in a lovely epilogue and an excerpt from the sequel.
In this Pride & Prejudice Variation Lady Catherine has a plan, in fact she has had this plan for many years. But can it succeed. She will need the help of the Colonel, but will he be a help or a hindrance. Can she make Darcy marry the women she has chosen. Loved this version of Lady Catherine. An entertaining and well-written variation. I enjoyed re-reading the story again. And again.
Lady Catherine, matchmaker extraordinaire? It is always fun to read a tale that gives another side to Lady Catherine. Yes, we love to hate her, but in this 'what if', she is just more meddlesome with surprising results!
So take a trip to Kent as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy try to determine what the other is all about. This is a quick surprising read that will have you laughing at the antics of Colonel Fitzwilliam and the surprising backbone of Anne de Bourgh...picture Mr. Collins floundering like a fish! You also get a sneak peek at 'The Heiress' and the further plans of Lady Catherine!
I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.
Can you imagine Lady Catherine being a matchmaker? This story portrays her as such, and she definitively has the talent for it. Who would have thought?
What if Lady C was a meddling matchmaker and knew just who would be perfect for her favorite nephew. She'd see them together by any means necessary. Totally adorable!
What a great twist, having Lady Catherine de Bojrgh as matchmaker. Her clever plot to bring Darcy and Elizabeth together was refreshingly different than canon. I enjoyed reading this happier version of the usually dour Lady Catherine. Wonderful book!
This was another great Pride and Prejudice Novella by Leenie Brown and I loved Lady Catherine in this book! Her character is so fun and different than in most versions. Richard is also a really fun character in this book and it is fun to see him and Lady Catherine plotting together. The epilogue at the end of this story is also really cute. This book also contains a preview of the sequel for this book Not an Heiress: A Pride and Prejudice Novella which sounds like a lot of fun and I look forward to reading next.
I liked the idea of Lady Catherine changing her feathers and helping to bring Darcy and Elizabeth together. This is a delightful romp. Check for these errors: Split Infinitives: "to seemingly enjoy," "to be slightly amused," "to even look," "to not be able," "to not like," "Where not they betrothed?" should be "Were" "under the robe as knelt" "Mr. Collin's" should be "Mr. Collins" "been more clear" should be "clearer" "to the ladies honor" should be "lady's" "I did bother to look" should be "did not" "anything different than what I wished" should be "different from" "forming to deep an" should be "forming too deep"
This was a cute, charming story. I loved how Lady Catherine became a much beloved character throughout the book - very different from her characterization in both the original and in the various other adaptations that I've read. It's always fun to read a new and different take, and this one certainly was. I really enjoyed it!
In this novella we have a different Lady Catherine then who is usually portrayed. I love her like this. I even like how quickly Elizabeth starts changing her mind, but Darcy is more sweet and it's endearing. Give this a chance
It only takes a short time in a locked room for Darcy and Elizabeth to resolve their differences. I enjoyed this sweet novella in which Lady Catherine meddles with Darcy's love life in another manner.
These are canon characters acting in very non-canon ways. As I read this story, I kept thinking Elizabeth wouldn't say that or Mr. Darcy wouldn't do that or Col. Fitzwilliam would never do that! It was so distracting.
I'm in the minority on this, as I never read Pride and Prejudice so I was glad to read this mini version. This was a short, quick read and I enjoyed the matchmaking aunt,
A rather interesting variation of author Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice. Rather different than usual storyline and new characters but enjoyable.
This is a different take of Pride & Prejudice. It’s a short novel. My take away is that the story is interesting until Elizabeth Bennet suddenly decides she loves Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy. There really wasn’t much time for her to change her opinion. One minute she didn’t like him and the next she loved him. This story needed more development. In the end, it felt incomplete and unsatisfying.
