"Suzanna's Surrender" is the fourth book in the Calhoun series, and the story of Suzanna, the oldest of the sisters and Holt.
We are already aware of the plot by now- the missing emeralds, the painful suicide, the legacy, and the HEA of the other three sisters. Now its Suzanna's turn..
Suzanna has gone through a lot of pain in her short life- an abusive marriage and a tumultuous divorce have left her with two beautiful kids who are her everything. She isnt unhappy, but she isnt happy either- until the bad boy from her childhood, Holt, turns out to be Christian's grandson and she is chosen to talk to him regarding the missing emeralds and its link to the painter.
There was a lot to love about this book. Apart from the fact that we got to see the HEA of the other sisters, we saw Suzanna finally dealing with her shitty ex, Holt and Suzanna gently falling in love- and finally conclusion to the heartbreaking love story of Bianca and Christian.
TBH their tragic tale was making me reluctant to read this story, but addition of his letters in this book gave us a beautiful dual POV and their bittersweet ending totally made me tear up.
Then again, it was amazing to see Holt and Suzanna finally finding their HEA, especially with the dogs and the two kids.
Finally a great story in this series (did not like the previous ones).

I've read the other books preceding this one and I liked them all. In fact I loved them. Not so much to give a 5 star rating but enough to remember it as one of the good reads.

I've said this from the beginning and I say it again, there's no Romeo in this series, no passionate dark lover...no sudden twist in the plot but just a sheer soulful beauty in a simple story that touched my heart.

I liked this book a lot. Its a wonderful blend of old and new, light and dark, love and hurt. *Sigh*

Holt Bradford, the dark brooding gray-eyed ex-cop, is an interesting character. I've loved caring handsome Trent, Southern charm boy Sloan, sweet adorable Max- all of them better than delicious. But Holt, dangerous, passionate, intense Holt who's not much of a flowers-candlelight-sweet kiss person was able to charm me off my feet too. Of course I didn't like him as much as the others but I still liked him.

Suzanna, I've liked her from the beginning and I liked her more. Delicate, charming, passionate, strong, caring... She's all that and more. Her children, they were amazing too. They were a part of who she was and I must say that I was enchanted.

As always, the best thing I liked about this book and the other books in the series is the love story, the old faded one, of Bianca and Christian. God, I can't even come close to describing it properly. It was soothing, heartbreaking yet calming and a beautiful story. And the way it was mixed along with the each of the Calhoun women's, it was just amazing. I really really liked it, and I hope you do too. :)

My re-reading this year has been all about Nora Roberts. I've re-read so many of her books via audio this year, and I've really enjoyed it. I decided to give Suzanna's Surrender a re-read, because it has always been a favorite of mine. Suzanna's Surrender might be a bit dated, but seriously, I still love this story. Unfortunately, I didn't love the audio narration.

Suzanna's Surrender is the fourth book in The Calhouns series about four sisters who live in a castle of sorts in Maine (called The Towers) that has been in their family for years. During the course of the series, they are looking for missing emerald jewelry that their ancestor (Bianca) hid away. During their search, they learn that an artist who lived on the island years ago knew Bianca. Present day Holt Bradford is the grandson of that artist. So Suzanna goes to ask him for help, and then ROMANCE!

I really enjoyed this story. Suzanna is a great heroine. She's a divorced mother of two, and her first marriage was not a happy one. Suzanna has worked hard to provide a loving home for her children, and to rebuild her life after her divorce. She's also worked hard to help her sisters preserve their castle-like home. I just love Suzanna.

Holt is a bit stand-offish and sometimes a little jerk-y in the beginning, but not overly so. Holt is gruff, especially on the outside, but once he lets someone in, he's totally devoted and protective. He's definitely a standard hero from this time in Nora Roberts' history. He's recently returned to the island, after leaving the Police Force. He's not all that happy about Suzanna showing up at his place, but once he sees her again, he can't stop thinking about her.

I was so shipping Holt and Suzanna. Nora Roberts does such a wonderful job of creating these different characters that work together so well. I will say that there are some dated things throughout Suzanna's Surrender. There is a fainting scene, which is a tiny by eye-rolly. And there is the standard, my first husband was a complete asshole theme, too.  But there are some more modern things, too, that I love. For example, Suzanna's ex husband's new wife, is not awful. Nora Roberts made sure not to make her this horrific, bitchy character, and I so loved that.

And, of course, I must talk about the ghost/spirit that is a relatively big thing in this series. As you might know, I am an absolute sucker for books that have books and castles, and it's totally awesome here. The ghost aspect isn't the focus; Holt an Suzann's romance it. But the whole atmosphere is pretty great.

I totally recommend Suzanna's Surrender by Nora Roberts to contemporary romance lovers. Even with the slight datedness to it, it's such a great example of what Nora Roberts does. However, I do not recommend the audio book. The narrator, Kate Rudd, gave the women such whiny voices, and made them seems like idiots a lot of the time. But the print version is wonderful! This review was originally posted on Quinn's Book Nook

Author: Nora Roberts

Length: ~200 pages
Setting: Contemporary, 1991. Mount Desert Island off the coast of Maine.
Sex: Explicit. Handwavy.
Hero: Retired detective

Completing the story of the missing emeralds as well as giving the last Calhoun sister her HEA, Suzanna’s Surrender works.

It’s a sweet romance of a young, divorced mother finding the man who will make her life complete, who will love her children and her, support and respect her.

And he gets respect, love, family.

It works. It’s nice. It completes the set.

(Until the addendum, Sloan’s sister’s story, published a few years later.)

Bah.

Reading a Nora Roberts novel is like putting on your pjs and slippers and sitting in front of a log fire.
You know you are guaranteed a happy ending, she makes everything good, running a gardening centre sounds like fun! Bringing up 2 young children as a single mom- fun!!!
The only negative is that the male hero smoked, but I suppose back in the day that was a macho, sexy thing to do!!

Not completely what I wanted it to be, but this read like a train and I could not put it down. Despite all the flaws with the actual romances (the last two were definitely my favourite), I really liked Bianca & Christian's story that was woven throughout the series.

I think Nora Roberts did it again. Mixed mystery with romance and came up with another good book. And just for a little while you are transported to the books location.

This is a classic Nora Roberts from 1991 and the third in the series about the Cahoun women and the missing emerald necklace. All is revealed at the end, but not before Suzanne falls in love again and is threatened by the jewel thief who has become obsessed with the necklace and has threaten all the women at one time. She falls in love with Christian's grandson, who I personally don't care for very much, because he smokes like a chimney stack and is too rough for the gentle Suzanne after what she had went through with her first husband. But he does have enough redeeming characters to be a Nora Roberts hero. This is the second time that I have read this series, but so much time has passed since the first reading, it was mostly new to me.

I wanted an ending and I got it. Thank you Bianca! I guess...
The plot was taken to a next level, really good story and amazing couples. and that great aunt Colleen!! I love her!! I liked her the moment she stepped back into their lives.
Sweet, great mother and strong person. That's how I would describe Suzanna! Bad experience broke her but she knew how to be there for her children and how to survive for them. I just love the way Nora Roberts draws the image of the single mother whether it is in this book or in The Key of Valor or in Finding the Dream. You just feel that it is different and that mothers never fail to be there.
And seriously? what is wrong with men? okay they have the right to be worried and taking matters into their own hands but leaving the girls out of the loop? However, I enjoyed their secret meetings and stuff the way I enjoyed the whole book. Now I am asking myself what could happen in Calhouns #5. I thought the story and the thief would be dragged till the end but I'm glad it ended with Suzanna. It was about time!

SUZANNA'S SURRENDER (The Calhoun Women #4)
Nora Roberts, 1991
Contemporary, Mystery

Overall: 7/10
Suzanna's Surrender was a fun experience -- and it really was an experience because, emboldened by my completion of For the Love of Lilah, I began to take this book everywhere, and there are more than a few photos of me reading aloud from it (I read the sex scene to my friend to distract her from an upset stomach, and it unfortunately upset her stomach more). I really liked being in this world -- I was excited to see where Suzanna and Holt would end up! At times, Holt was an uncomfortable character to follow, and his thoughts about Suzanna and what he wanted to do her weren't always easy to read. But I was drawn in by the idea that he could change and, as it turns out, he could. Maybe I have rose-tinted glasses, but I thought it was great (and a lot of fun to read).

FMC: Suzanna was an understandable character, but for all I wanted to like her, I had a hard time feeling close to her. I liked her best in relation to her kids (who were very cute and well-written).
MMC: Mysteriously, I loved Holt. I loved his dramatic ass backstory and his closed-offness -- I honestly think I liked him more for being closed off, because I was rooting for Suzanna to peel back his layers! Points were revoked for pretty obvious misogyny and certain uncomfortable bouts of anger. Holt does have moments of self reflection -- he acknowledges that their relationship will be work, and, upon learning Suzanna has been seriously abused, changes his behavior (though not enough, in my opinion). He was flawed, but I did know who he was.
The Couple: I don't think Holt and Suzanna were an amazing match, though that could be because I like my couples a little silly, and I didn't enjoy the ever-present power dynamic. By the end of the book, I was won over by their relationship. This was aided quite a lot by Suzanna's children, and the idea that Holt could be a good father (I wish there was more of that!)
The Chemistry: I actually did think they had chemistry, though I wish Holt wasn't quite so drag-her-into-a-cave (to put it like Nora would) about it. After their first sex scene, too, their relationship became much better for me, which probably contributed to my overall impression of their chemistry.

Side Characters: Not enough of my diva Aunt Colleen. Kids were great, and so was Lilah!
Location: I think that the settings were well-described (particularly in the boat ride), but I wasn't over the moon to have to spend time in Holt's cabin for most of the book.
The Non-Romance Conflict: The Calhoun diamond plot is resolved in this book, and resolved through a very clear one-to-one connection between the lovers of past and present. I didn't hate it -- it wasn't the point of the book, but it certainly did better than Lilah's book. Caufield's end was extremely interesting to me, and probably the most compelling chapter for me. It was awesome!
Queerness: Holt's rejection of Suzanna's flower business to his begrudging participation and then appreciation did read as queer. Enjoyed.

Page Count: 255
Edition: 2022
Og Publication: 1991

Dedication: For my mother, with love
Perspectives: 3rd Person Limited(?) (FMC, MMC, Side Characters, Antagonists, not chapter or scene restricted)
First Kiss: 47 (chapter 3)
First Sex Scenes: 142 (chapter 8)

Suzanna's Surrender

I must give "kudos" to Nora Roberts for her excellence in being able to tell these stories, especially the dialog, making us cry or laugh out loud. This wonderful novel is just another great example of her gift, that all her enviable would-be writers moan when they read her words, wishing they could do half as good a job as she does! And her readers, fans, that grab every novel she writes so they can swallow up another brilliant book.
This was one of her very best!
I loved her scene where poor Holt was trying to make his marriage proposal the most romantic he could think of, and all Suzanna wanted to do, was find out what the men in hers and her sisters' lives were up to, when I came to the emeralds the family was "dying" to find, and all Holt, Trent, Sloan, and Max were trying to keep their beloveds safe!
The whole scene was outrageously funny, but romantic, and had, I am sure, everyone trying to read, with their eyes full of tears.
Another scene: (caution, if you haven't read it yet), when Suzanna's little girl asked Holt, if she could call him, "Daddy". I KNOW Holt's heart must have been in his throat, k owing how much he loved Suzanna's children already!
If you haven't read this one, you must!! It explains many things you might not know if you are starting out of sequence.
Such a lovely book, and I cannot wait to read the last in this series!

Just powering through this series. This book I've also read before but I have forgotten so much of it that I'm glad I'm rereading it (like where the emeralds are hidden). This book is about Susanna meeting Christian's grandson, Holt Bradford, as they try to figure out the rest of the mystery.

I enjoyed Susanna's arc in this. The family were less present in this book I felt, but I enjoyed seeing how Susanna isn't quite over her marriage since Bax still has the power to hurt her. I liked how she dealt with the children being gone and Bax when he came back. I loved Great Aunt Cordelia and how she's harsh but she obviously loves her mother . I have enjoyed how each of the women have had a connection with Bianca. And I really enjoyed how we got Christian's POV in this story and how connected he was!

That said, I really didn't like how much Holt yelled at Suzanna. He was grumpy and not good at romance or talking nicely and most of the time this was fine, but I found his constant urges to break things around Suzanna and how he snapped at her a lot a little frustrating. He had a bit of a temper problem and I think that got confused with 'grumpy'. He was more angry than grumpy and I wasn't a big fan of this, though I did appreciate how Suzanna didn't react like she was threatened at all.

3 stars!

Worst book of the series so far but they've all been pretty bad. The first book was probably the best and I didn't like it that much. Have Megan's story to read. Hope it's better but probably not. I think it's partly because of the time period they were written, late 80s early 90s. This type of writing must have been more popular and it's not working in modern times. The male hero in this story was such a jerk. I didn't like anything about him. He was calling her babe right away which I found offensive. The love scenes were cringeworthy and uncomfortable. Badly written. The first one was rather rapey. He wouldn't let her leave after. He threw her on the bed, was grabbing and manhandling her very roughly. Not romantic at all. She had come off of a bad abusive marriage and now hooks up with this guy. He was verbally disrespectful. There was nothing appealing about him. He took over the investigation and the men were handling things, not being honest with the women. A bunch of macho jerks. I'm glad the situation with the lost emeralds was resolved. Didn't really like that psycho stalker aspect throughout the previous stories. One more thing: feeding a dog a brownie? A big no no. Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Any dog owner should know this and this shouldn't be included in a story. A big disappointment the whole story was for me.

I used to love a romance novel, but these days they annoy me. And old ones are especially problematic. I have so many issues with the Holt character: he is a surly bad boy with a lifelong chip on his shoulder for no apparent reason. He was a cop for ten years, in the vice department, then retired (with a medical for mental/anger issues? Because by all accounts he had those before.) He was shot, nbd, but he's crazy sensitive about having been stabbed. And he has real issues with social class. I don't think he would have passed the psych eval for the PD, but whatever--I'll suspend that disbelief.
It's a given that he has a heart of gold. But that doesn't excuse his toxic male seduction methods. I don't find it believable that a woman who got herself out of an abusive relationship immediately jumps into one with this guy and her family doesn't raise an eyebrow. (Oh, but he changed auntie's tire once and refused payment, so obv he's a good guy and won't hurt her.) And of course, he has a good dog, so there's another point in his favor.
Also, they didn't clean out one whole floor of the house for 80 years? No, 3 stars might be generous.

I have absolutely loved every second of the Coulhoun sisters. This is a series that I could read again and again.

I really love how Susanna's love story brought the whole thing 360. I should have seen that coming. Did Nora Roberts plan out this four part series before she even wrote the first one? It's such a tetris of peices that we needed the bastard son of Bax to be brought up in book 2 in order for the story to work in book 4.

Its amazing how rough both Sloane and Holt were yet I grew to love them both. Susanna didn't need a life of luxury, she needed someone to love her with a maddening passion. Someone who would love her and her children forever. Christian's grandson fit the bill. If any woman could keep from losing her heart after watching Holt with the children, well that woman is made of stone.

The seance and Holt's vision play out perfectly. I wondered how that could happen. I love well thought out writing. It's so satisfying.

Suzanna Calhoun knows Holt Bradford from years ago when they had a vehicle/motorcycle interaction. No one was hurt but tempers flared. And that's why she's not very excited to talk to him today, even if his grandfather was in love with her great-grandmother and Holt might hold the key to finding the family's lost emerald necklace.
Hold Bradford has always thought of Suzanna as a princess but the mystery of the emeralds pulls them together and makes him see that the mother of two and garden store owner/landscaper is sturdier than she appears. And the admiration he had for her twelve years ago may just bloom into love.
A nice addition to the series. I did read it close to when it came out so it's hard not to wear the nostalgia glasses but I think it holds up.

Me gusta cómo escribe Nora Roberts.

They finally found the emeralds! Yes! And Livingston is now dead. Pitched through the window, the same as Bianca did, when she was arguing with her husband. I knew he had killed her. And he kept it quiet for all those years. He was a ruthless man. Holt and Suzanna found each other as well as love. Her ex-husband was as evil as her great-grandfather had been. He only married her for her name and hopefully money, which she didn't have. Then when she became pregnant with a second child he was very angry, as he was sleeping around with other women as well. And he fathered a boy, Kevin, with Megan, and they came to the wedding of Amanda and her husband was Megan's brother.

I know you should suspend belief somewhat while reading fictional books but the naivety and stupidity of the characters got to an overload point in this installment of the series. The con artist has broken into the home, attempted to harm multiple sisters, abducted Max to work for him then tried to kill him, etc etc yet they don't do decent back ground checks on the workers in their home is ridiculous. And to have private family conversations while the workers are around is ignorant as well. Just got to a really frustrating point on how trusting/ignorant the Calhoun family got.

I absolutely love the Calhouns. The story of each sister was amazing especially the plot of the emeralds 💚

Suzanna's Surrender is the 4th sister and I absolutely adored her book. Mostly because of the children. They were sooo cute. I hate Bax. Holt should have killed him 😡 Holy and Suzanna are perfect together. And Holt trying to be sweet? The engagement scene? Eeeeeee!!!! 😍😍🥰🤗

I am looking forward to Megan's Mate though I think it will mostly be romance as the emeralds are now found. I don't know. At least the single mom trope is there. It'll be cute to see the relationships develop 🦋
