Hartley Howard (1908–1979) was the pen name of Leopold Horace Ognall, a British crime novelist. Ognall was born in Montreal and worked as a journalist before starting his fiction career. He wrote over ninety novels before his death in 1979. As Harry Carmichael, Ognall's primary series characters were John Piper (an insurance assessor) and "Quinn," a crime reporter.
I love these old books. Imagine Humphrey Bogart as a wiry street-wise hard-boiled gumshoe detective that he played so often in his movies and there you have set the scene for this murder mystery. Lots of twists and turns and red herrings to throw you off the scent and your whodunit and why scenario is off and running. Published in 1957 but set I think in the 1920s, the iconic language of broad and dame, and...tongue in cheek sentences such as, I liked her voice. It reminded me of cool, sweet cider on a hot summer's afternoon." Such fun to read. Recommended.
