Every week Drayton sends a letter. But he never receives a reply. He doesn't expect one.
His best friend, his lover, has been in prison for ten years. His crime? Saving Dray's life.
Vannguard Shaw never had much: an alcoholic father who kept him around for the welfare money and a lifetime of bruises. That all changed when he met Dray, who became his confidante, his boyfriend, his first and his everything.
Dray is the owner of D & V Infinity, a wildly successful car manufacturing company. He's wealthy and lives alone in his pristine penthouse. He's out of touch with his employees and doesn't understand what makes people tick.
There's only one person Dray can read, one person he needs like his next breath.
Dray never gives up hope. His purpose in life is freeing Vann.
This book is essentially about Vann adjusting back to life outside a prison cell, which involves transitioning through the Halfway House ran by Matt and Julian. Vann has no computer skills and doesn't believe he has much to give.
Dray wants Vann to lead the design department at D & V Infinity, but Vann doesn't think he's qualified, never mind that his design, along with Dray's brilliant engineering skills, launched the company.
The story isn't without some angst. Vann's despicable father makes an appearance, and Dray has to confront his mother, the greedy, cruel woman responsible for sending Vann to prison, but the focus is on healing, not pain; comfort, not hurt.
There is some mild office drama related to the head designer who currently works for Dray, an arrogant douchebag named Sean. The scene where Vann finally asserts his authority in front of god and the entire design department had me grinning like a fool.
The author skillfully weaves in short flashbacks and letters to show us how the men met and the depth of their love. Their HEA is never in question. Every moment between Vann and Dray is a fairytale in miniature.
Neither man has been with anyone else; ten years of abstinence go up in smoke with a slow burn filled with lingering kisses & heated glances as they wait for a weekend to be alone. Damn, but this might be the sexiest story in the series.

We briefly visit with the other couples and meet new friends, including Ben, another resident of the house. Ben, who is Deaf, is sweet and shy; he's always observing. Vann may have a rough exterior but he has the best heart; what he does for Ben (such a small thing but so important) had me reaching for a tissue, or two.
If I had to pick just one word to describe A Worthy Man, it would be ROMANTIC. Dray and Vann never give up on each other. They are colors in harmony.

This book!! Gah I really loved this one. Both Vann and Dray were "it" for each other from day one as young lads, each other's "one" and soul mates and this never wavered despite everything they were hit with. They just kept taking the hits, brushing themselves off and kept on going. They were both dealt really crap hands in life and I love that they rose above it all.
I think what really made this a 5 star read is that there was no relationship angst, and that they dealt with things as a unit. Also, seeing such a huge growth in both their characters totally worked for me.
As much as I loved Cole and Ty, I think Vann and Dray just stole their place in top spot. Loved these two so hard! 💖

Like all of the books in the Men of the Halfway House series, A Worthy Man is a story about second chances. Of overcoming your past and the obstacles that life throws your way. It's about learning that you do have worth, no matter how others may have tried to tear you down. It's about love.
As the author promised, A Worthy Man is much less angsty than the previous book. In fact, there isn't much angst at all and what of it there is feels organic. It's a sweet and romantic story, and while I do normally prefer for there to be a little more angst, I have to say, I think Vann and Dray -- but especially Vann -- have really been through enough. I loved their story!
Drayton has always been a geek. Super intelligent, but lacking in social skills, he was always fodder for bullies. But he never backed down. One day, as a few guys from the football team decided to take aim at Drayton, Vann decided to step in. Fearless, spirited, Vann. And from there on, Vann and Dray were best friends. And later, much more.
Drayton comes from money, but his parents seemed to care more about that money than they did their own son. Drayton never measured up. He was always a disappointment -- at least to hear them tell it. In truth, Drayton was always his own person. Brilliant and just wanting to solve problems and do his thing. His parents were all about image, but Dray saw a bigger picture.
Vann has never been able to catch a break. His father was an abusive drunk who never let a moment pass by without telling his son how worthless he was. How he would never amount to anything. Vann, though, was creative. And artist. And the only person who ever encouraged him was Dray.
Vann spent 10 years in prison for murder. Never mind that what he did saved a life that night -- Dray's. He never expected to get out of that hell hole, but somehow Dray managed to get him paroled. 10 years, gone. And now, Vann has to figure out how to exist on the outside again. How to be around people. How to, at long last, be with Dray.
I loved Drayton's patience as much as I loved Vann's protectiveness. I loved how honorable and wonderful they both were - and not because of their upbringings, but in spite of it. I loved how well they complimented each other and held each other up. They got crap parents, but they lucked out with each other. And watching them both fight for what they wanted after Vann was released is what this series is all about. It was beautiful and romantic and uplifting.
A Worthy Man is so damn sweet and I savored every moment of it. I've loved each and every book in this series, and A Worthy Man is a worthy edition to this series!

I LOVED this book. I'm not much of a reviewer but here goes . . .
This book is like reading the best, most delicious epilogue ever. You know - the epilogues you want to read for your favorite books? The ones where you see how their lives turned out after the HEAs? The epilogues where their love story continues?

All the stars for this absolutely amazing story!!!
This is book #5 in the Men of the Halfway House series by Jaime Reese.
I've read all the previous books in this series and enjoyed them all, but this one is in a league of its own. I hope I'm not wrong when I say it can be read as a stand-alone. If you didn't get a chance to read all the other books you might not understand the dynamics between some of the secondary characters, such as Julian and Matt, from the first book, A better man. All the other books have strong MC's with sad back stories. I complained about the sweetness, but here, for some reason, it really worked for me.
It's been a while since I've read the previous books, but when I dived into this one I knew it's going to be great. This author's writing didn't disappoint me. And I was right. Still this book surprised me. From the first chapter I got glued to the pages. I just couldn't stop reading. Drayton and Vann are now my favorite characters in the series and one of my favorites in MM genre. Maybe it's because their story broke my heart and I'm addicted to angst. Here I got my heart shattered and I had to fight some tears. It's really hard for a story to really get to me, but here I felt my chest constricted with the character's pain. It was like I could feel their despair and loneliness.
I'm not usually a fan of stories that span over many years, but here I loved it. I was glad that all the years Vann served in prison weren't too detailed. And I was devastated while reading first Dray's letters and much later Vann's replies 😢
Again I must admit I'm not a fan of the main characters' flashbacks from the past. But here it really fit the story. We get so many great and sweet memories from both Dray and Vann.
And finally, the present. So many things happened in 10 years. 10 long and lonely years. As much as I blamed Vann for his silence, the author knew how to make me understand his choice and forgive him.
This book was a bit longer than necessary, I'll admit that. Some chapters are slower than I expected, but overall I think it was a great story of true love, of soul mates. Many things happen in this book, we get the chance to follow our MC's through a lot of changes. Vann feels lost and unworthy, he struggles a lot getting back into society and it's super hard. But he works hard trying to be WORTHY of Dray's love. So I loved the title and how he finally found the strength to demonstrate he's not his father, and that he's not stupid or worthless.
Some things didn't seem realistic, but I didn't mind. I ended enjoying this story much more than I expected and it really touched me.
What I really adored about this would be how both main characters evolved, how they made peace with their demons, their fears and their horrible parents. But they had each other. Even if they were so different, they really were exactly what the other needed.
I highlighted SO much! I'm sure I will reread this story. That's how much I loved it!
And the Epilogue was perfect. It was sweeter than honey, but I adored it. I closed this book with my heart full of hope. Even if I'll miss Vann and Dray!

What's to like: If you’re a fan of The Men of Halfway House you were most likely bouncing around, anxiously awaiting this release like I was. I have come to the conclusion Reese’s stories are laced with something highly addictive because I crave them like no other. I know without fail I am going to fall in love with her guys. I know they won’t be perfect but perfectly suited for one another. Her balance is exquisite. Angst will most definitely be present but the romance and love will overcome all obstacles placed in their way. Vann and Drayton suffer severely. This time the savage pain occurs before. But the thing is, true soul mates cannot be kept apart. And this leads me to the part I love the most…..
What's to love: Vann and Dray discover something magical underneath the refuge of a shady tree. Love. It begins with an agreement and ends with a promise. They are going to be together always…and…forever. One tragic night their plans are shattered, their future is smashed and destroyed. Vann essentially gives his life to save Dray’s. He sacrifices his freedom in exchange for Drayton’s sentence to a future without him. But he never gave up hope. The most beautiful part is, Dray never gave up either. Against all odds, they both hold onto the thread of the bare possibility of being reunited.
This story begins when their roads merge again.
Learning how to weave themselves together a second time brings new challenges. Both have changed. Five hundred and twenty-five weeks apart is an expensive price to pay. But what they had was priceless and in the end, love conquers all. I absolutely adore it when a story vibrates with emotions. Vann and Dray’s story throbs with its own heartbeat and that is one of Jaime’s superpowers. A notebook, a studio and a bit of ink confirm the truth of words exchanged. There are SO many impressive scenes, I wish I could share them all. However, I will refrain and highly suggest you experience them firsthand. It’s very much worthy of your time.
If you are wondering about the rest of the guys, I’m thrilled to share they all appear. It may be brief for some but other’s have ample page time. And the best news of all? The Men of Halfway House does not end here, there’s MORE to come!

A great addition to this amazing series ~ a second chance love story that will melt your heart ~ D + V = ∞
A Worthy Man is book 5 in Jaime Reese's amazing series, The Men of Halfway House. While the stories are all interconnected, they can each be read as standalones...I however, would recommend reading them all or you will miss out on some great books!

Part of the reassimilation issue for Vann has to do with his buried demons. He has lived a life that wasn't pretty. He was told he was worthless from a young age, never felt like he deserved Dray, and now after prison he is battling old demons along with freshly earned scars from being inside. He isn't sure he is worthy of Dray ... Dray wants to love, protect, and heal Vann...
Will these two get their happily ever after or is their love not strong enough? It's an emotional ride but I promise you if you read the book you will love it!!

I really loved...no, ADORED A Restored Man 😍😍😍, but this one ran it a very close second I have to admit...
There was so much love, passion, tenderness and belief in this [kind of] second chances story featuring Dray and Vann [odd names though seriously, Drayton and Vannguard]...in their looks, in their touches, the intensity built up over ten years of loneliness and grief that you just knew [and prayed like mad] that everything would work out for them....and the letters, Gahd the letters [gulp] just about killed me. The letters Dray sent every week while Vann was in prison, and the replies Vann wrote but never sent...kept in a notebook just for Dray to read when Vann got out....honestly, if you're in need of a good cry for whatever reason then this story and especially those letters should really help. The guys certainly lost out in the family stakes BUT thank God they had each other; Dray's cold and arrogant bitch of a mother [and I use that term loosely] and Vann's greedy, violent and drunken arse of a sperm donor would have made great pantomime villains, with the audience shrieking 'boo, hiss' at every appearance and no doubt throwing things at the stage...quite weighty objects too I would imagine, hehe.
Liked having the little catch-up with all the other MC's of the previous stories in the series, although I suppose this would work just as well as a standalone...it's all about the wonderful writing she says sagely!!

I really liked this book. I was curious about Drayton's story since he was mentioned in the third book and it didn't disappoint. The amount of struggle that Vann and Dray went through is enormous but all it did made them better men.
The first part of the book was so emotional that many a tear was shed especially with the notepad! I was so sad for both of them, how unfair life was to them and how people who should have loved them didn't and betrayed their trust.
Poor Vann trying to make sense of the world and Dray trying to get him to open up. I was glad that Dray was so patient with Vann, so understanding. Both of them had many insecurities, many deep rooted fears that rose up to the top and they actually helped each other deal with them, supporting each other either with words or just being there, silent.
The rest of the book was about them gaining self confidence and self worth. It was beautiful to see how far they both have come together and on their own. There were some issues here and there but nothing major. I was a little surprised at how light and at times sweet this book was. I expected a little bit more danger, and up until the end I was waiting for someone to get hurt or something, but not this time!
Although I have to admit these two were super hot together. The sex was amazing, written just right and I loved every page. There were lots of romantic gestures, precious moments that were very cute and I loved them all. Overall I enjoyed spending time with Vann and Dray. All the work, and their determination paid off in the end! I highly recommend it! I hope there will be more books in this series.

If you want a heart wrenching, punch you in the guts, but ultimately, happy ever after love story, then this is for you!
This is hurt comfort at its very best.
Vann and Dray are unfairly and brutally separated from each other for years. Time and distance however, never dimmed the love they had for the other, a love that gave them strength and support and hope to survive. Now they finally have a second chance at happiness, but it’s going take a lot of healing and adjustments on both their parts.
As Vann and Dray get their bearings and slowly start to make a new life, they grab on tight and never let go. Reese perfectly showcases how far they’re willing to do whatever is necessary with the utmost dedication and devotion.
I’m not going to go into some protracted review. Suffice it to say, I swooned, I cried, I was basically an emotional wreck. It was so worth it! If you haven’t started this series, I highly recommend going to the beginning where it all started.
The extra half star goes to epic love being fucking epic. Hell yeah!

I'm such a party pooper today, sorry:( I swear I 've been reading this since it came out. Which is almost a year ago. A few pages here and there every month. SO LOOOOONG! So many repetitive, inner monologues. I had to suspend disbelief multiple times and roll my eyes at the cheesiness. But good writing and I loved the flashbacks. 2.75 stars rounded up I guess.

When I read A Restored Man I somehow got it in my head that Drayton was this old dude. So it took me a while to get the right image in my head when I started this book. I think it's the name, I really dislike the name Drayton. It just sounds old.. Luckily the story was great. No old dudes here.
Drayton and Vann met when Vann was 14 and Drayton was 17. They became fast friends and eventually something more (I loved that they waited with their first kiss for Vann's 18th birthday).
But then Drayton's father tried to kill him when Drayton was 24, on the day he came out to his parents. It was Vann who saved him, but ended up killing Drayton's father. And it was Drayton's mother who made sure Vann was sent to jail to serve a lifesentence.
Drayton never gave up hope and in his mind the relationship was still as strong as ever. Even though Vann refused to see Drayton while in prison, because he couldn't handle seeing him. But Drayton never stopped writing Vann. One letter a week for 10 years...
After 10 years in jail, Jessie and Aidan find out the truth in the previous book and end up getting Vann released.
The story starts with Drayton picking Vann up as soon as he is out on parole, and although it is slightly awkward at first between them, they admit how much they missed each other.
Drayton brings Vann to the Halfway House where Matt and Julian are standing by to help Vann get back on his feet again. But Vann has a hard time adjusting and even though he likes all the men of Halfway House, he still feels out of place..
With the help and patience of Drayton, Vann slowly comes out of his shell. He learns to trust in people again, especially in Drayton and their love..
I just loved these two. I have read about established couples before, but never after a 10 year separation (neither were with others during those 10 years), so even though they knew each other, in a way they had to start all over again.
The love these guys shared was so strong, I just loved all the tender moments between them.
I do have to admit that the first half felt a bit repetitive to me. I liked the second half way more. The first half was just a bit too slow. But the second half made up for that!
Cole and Ty are still my favorite couple in this series, but Dray and Vann are a close second.

This is one of only a handful of book series that I have consistently given full stars to each subsequent book. That in itself is a rarity and it’s so damn impressive that Reese keeps upping the ante with every story she releases within The Men of Halfway House series, making each one even more gripping and all-consuming than the last.
Here, we witness a truly epic love story between opposites Drayton and Vann. They initially met when they were teenagers – Drayton 17 and Vann 14 – each from opposite sides of the tracks, both with parents who treated them like crap. Their friendship was strong and eventually grew into more as they got older, but they were wrongfully torn apart in their early twenties when Vann was sent to prison for accidentally ending a life while saving Drayton’s.
For ten long years, the two were separated. Vann refused to let Drayton visit him in prison, for heartbreaking reasons that made complete sense to me and made me ache for Vann and Drayton both. But regardless of their separation, Drayton never gave up hope of one day being reunited with the love of his life. He wrote Vann a letter every single week and continued to legally fight for Vann’s release, until eventually Jesse and Aidan’s hard work from book four (A Mended Man) lead to the reveal of a complicated web of corruption within the justice system, including involvement of Drayton’s horrible mother who had been working to keep Vann locked away. As a result of these revelations, Vann is released on parole immediately, which is where this story properly begins.
Reuniting after a decade apart isn’t an easy transition. Vann has been so isolated and full of such hopelessness for so long that the prospect of finally being free is overwhelming, not to mention how shocked and surprised he is when he realises that Drayton has been waiting for him this whole time and wants them to begin building a new chapter in their lives, together. Vann is scared to believe that all of this can actually be true. He feels unworthy of Drayton’s love, but he can’t deny how desperately he wants to belong to his man again.
What follows is such a beautiful story of second chance romance and personal redemption. This story was often heart-wrenching, but more often it was hopeful, with moments that will make you laugh, cry and even cheer in triumph. I loved every second of it. Their love story was one of the greats and won’t be forgotten any time soon.
As always, I loved all the interactions between the various main characters across the series – some playing more prominent roles than others, but all making an appearance at some point. I even liked the introduction of a few new HH members, particularly hearing impaired Ben, who stole all the scenes he featured in and who better damn-well get his own story!! (Pretty please! *bats eyelashes at Reese*)
Overall, it was another epic addition to what is easily a top ten M/M series for me. I cannot wait to see what comes next!

2.5 estrellas. Ups, me temo que con este libro voy a ser el garbanzo negro y estar en minoría. La historia de amor entre Vannguard y Drayton comienza cuando son adolescentes, dos chicos que se complementan pero que se tienen que enfrentar a la oposición de la familia de Drayton al venir ambos de situaciones sociales muy distintas. Algo sucede que provoca que Vannguard termine en prisión y deban separarse, pero a pesar de que parecía imposible, la vida les da una segunda oportunidad.
Es cierto que ellos son una pareja muy bonita, es cierto que hay muchos momentos románticos, es cierto que los secundarios son un punto muy positivo del libro. Pero... Me he aburrido, la autora da una y otra vez vueltas a lo mismo, los protagonistas marean y marean con los mismos pensamientos una y otra vez, hay frases en el libro que se repiten sin ningún pudor. Probablemente se podría haber contado lo mismo con 100 páginas menos y haber conseguido así que la historia y los personajes no parecieran estancados en lo mismo constantemente. Además de esto, todo lo relativo a cómo Vannguard se acopla al trabajo en la empresa de Drayton es totalmente increíble, ese arco argumental relativo a la compañía de coches tiene varios momentos que inducen irremediablemente al rolling eyes.
Dicho esto, la historia es bonita, pero no me ha gustado la forma de narrar de la autora. Lo siento :/.

For some reason I never read this series and this book opened my eyes to the beauty that is Jaime Reese and her characters.
This book was just fucking beautiful. I liked the fact that the book completely a stand alone, I was curious about the other guys but that's it.
This story is just a beautiful romance, it was sad sometimes because these guys went trough a lot, specially Vann but i loved the fact that they didn't let bad stuff defeat them.
This is definitely a feel good book with a beautiful romance and beautiful characters.
Now I'm gonna go and read all the previous books because I need more of these feelings this book left me with.
For some reason I never read this series and this book opened my eyes to the beauty that is Jaime Reese and her characters.

This story is just a beautiful romance, it was sad sometimes because these guys went trough a lot, specially Vann but i loved the fact that they didn't let bad stuff defeat them.
This is definitely a feel good book with a beautiful romance and beautiful characters.
Now I'm gonna go and read all the previous books because I need more of these feelings this book left me with.

I might be a bit harsh with my rating of this book, but...
When I read MM, I want MEN!!!!!!!! I want men on men interactions. I’m a heterosexual female who wants a double dose of manly men!! Even a MAN and a twink is OK, bc at least there’s ONE man in the equation. But the 2 MCs in this book don’t behave and talk like MEN!
The premise had a lot of promise. I like ex-con bad boy tropes. None of that “sexiness” was in here. I like been apart but stayed true to each other tropes, but the one in here was UNREAL!
Seriously, 2 lovers who were each other’s firsts who didn’t cheat on each other for 10 years due to prison separation dom’t MAUL each other when they see the other again???? At least FEEL the need to maul if not actually do it? ZERO sexual tension.
Then, WHAT TEENAGE MAN WHO’S IN LOVE AND LUST WITH THEIR PARTNER WAITS TIL THR PARTNER IS 18!!!! (And he’s 21) before doing the deed?????

Pros:
-The second chance romance came across as genuine and sweet.
-The protagonists were lovable and had me rooting for them.
-The chemistry was palpable.
-The flashbacks weren't disruptive and gave us an insight into how their friendship started and grew into more.
Cons:
-The dialogue was repetitive.
-The pace of the story started to drag at 50% and never picked up again.
-This book could've been 25% shorter and it still would've accomplished the same story.
It was an endearing story overall.

So I'm right in the middle of the rating scale here on GR because that's exactly how I felt about the story. It had something that kept my interest but at the same time I wanted to reach the end so I could move on.
The characters were very likeable and I liked the idea of the plot a lot. Unfortunately, the actual story was different than what I expected.
With Vann being in prison for 10 years I expected to read about his struggle to accustom to living free again or even his reaction to everything that had changed while he was inside. We got some of that but it was a very small part and I think with a book this long it could have been examined further.
I was expecting the characters to go through a journey of reconnecting and getting to know each other again, to try and re-build their relationshp after 10 years apart.
I was expecting a somewhat angsty story.
Well, I was wrong on all fronts and maybe that played a big role in my enjoyment of the story.
I felt like the book was too long, like the characters kept repeating themselves, there were too many internal dialogues, not enough struggle in the process of reconnecting or of Vann settling in his new life.
I think the book could be 100 pages shorter and the story would still have been told.
I liked the beginning a lot and I felt frustrated on behald of Vann somewhere around the middle of the book because he just couldn't catch a break. Shortly after that though I began to lose interest and the story began to become too hearts-and-flowers-y. (Yup, I totally made that a phrase!)
There are a few flashbacks in the first half to help the reader learn Vann and Drayton's story but they're not too long so if they're not your thing don't let them stop you.
This was the first book I've read of the series but I'll gladly give another one a try to see if it's a better match for me. There is a new book in the horizon and - even though the author hasn't announced anything yet - something tells me it's going to be Ben's story. That would be interesting to read!

This entire series is a must read for any MM Romance lover. Jaime can write a good book. They are long and meaty, full of all the feels. Love her stories.

Pure Romance
The Second Chance/Reunited Lovers trope is always a favorite but I've never read it done quite so well as this. I've loved every book in this series and Jaime Reese is an auto-buy. This story was a bit different than the first few, as Vann Shaw is coming out after 10 years, when he'd thought he was in for life. That of course, has colored his whole psyche, making a huge difference in how he's facing being free again. His first love, Drayton, is there to meet him, after spending 10 years hoping and fighting for Vann's freedom. It's hard to imagine someone being faithful and true for all that time, knowing it could be hopeless but remaining steadfast. How freaking romantic is that?
It's a long story and somewhat frustrating in the first half, as they can't be alone together for weeks. If I had 'nads, they'd have been blue too, just reading it! What it is though, is a chronicle of Vann's journey to find himself again, trying to change his own view of himself. Drayton has his own problems with self-worth and both of them are navigating without a roadmap but with complete certainty in each other. They epitomize the opposites attract adage. There are setbacks and obstacles for them and the story follows their evolution as individuals and as a couple.
It's not entirely angst free but there's are no major troubles they can't surmount. Despite the length, I was completely absorbed in every chapter. Even occasionally mundane details served a purpose in the narrative. I'm hoping that Benny's story may be next and I'll be anxiously awaiting, regardless of the MC. An eminently worthy book!

Every time I read one of the ‘Men of Halfway House' novels I think it is better than the previous one. This being the fifth of the loosely linked stories, and no exception to the aforementioned “rule”, I am beginning to run out of words to say how much I like this series: the characters and their issues, the emotional and other obstacles they have to overcome, and the passion they share. At the end of ‘A Worthy Man’ I was so full of emotions that it took me two days before I am now able to sit down to try to put my reactions and thoughts into words that, hopefully, come close to expressing how deeply I love this novel and how much I admire and respect Jaime Reese for writing Vann and Dray’s story.
Vann has had so many bad experiences in life, it is no surprise that he expects the worst to happen at all times. His father treated him worse than dirt, and nobody accepted him or saw his value as a human being before he met Dray in high school. Van may have been released from prison, but he assumes he’ll be sent back there. He still loves Dray with every fiber of his being, but he fears that Dray has moved on. Vann has spent years in prison for a “murder” he committed – but one that should have been looked at in the context of what Vann, or rather Dray, suffered before Vann acted. He has always accepted that he had to pay the price for his crime, but it just made me angry because, as far as I am concerned, what he did was closer to self-defense than murder. And anyway, the only reason he wasn’t paroled earlier was Dray’s vengeful b*tch of a mother… one of the villains caught and dealt with in the previous book.
Dray fell in love with Vann seventeen years ago when they were in high school, and still loves him fiercely after ten years of cruel separation. Dray is a geek, a clever guy who grew up rich but lost it all when he stood with Vann and his mother disowned him. But Dray is not someone who gives up, so he set out to become a super-successful businessman. Dray moves heaven and earth to get Vann out of prison now that his mother is behind bars, and the distance between them, which is pretty much unavoidable after that long apart, almost kills him. He just wants to move on, have Vann by his side as his partner, but it isn’t as easy as he had hoped.
Both Vann and Dray struggle with their own demons, a world that isn’t forgiving, and the realization that they have to build a new relationship, in many ways almost from scratch. Vann is stubborn and wants no special treatment, but adhering to all the rules Halfway House imposes on him isn’t easy, nor is finding a job he actually enjoys. Not to mention the need to tear down the emotional walls he has built to protect himself from the brutal life in prison. A large part of the story is about Vann discovering his self-worth and the confidence to accept Drayton’s love, and I was rooting for him at every step.
While, unlike in some of the previous books, there is no action-packed plot with suspenseful twists and turns in this novel, the personal drama, angst, and character growth is phenomenal. The strength of the love Vann and Dray share blew me away, and I adored all the little details about their past that were slowly revealed along the way. The supporting characters play an important role in Vann’s growth – especially Matt and Julian who started the halfway house in the first place – it was great to see them in action again. As for the final unraveling of all that went wrong and how things are put to rights… absolutely stunning!
If you prefer your love stories to be deeply emotional and full of passion, if you like seeing wounded men fighting their demons so they can finally be together, and if you’re looking for an enthralling, intensely touching read that is as much love story as it is a fascinating character study, then you will probably love this novel as much as I do. It is outstanding, and I hope there will be many more! Each one so far has been emotionally exhausting at first, but they unfailingly have such uplifting and rewarding endings that I always look forward to more. Highly recommended!

Two lost souls who find love with each other. Drayton and Vann were both abused by the people who were supposed to love them unconditionally. They survived by finding each other, but are torn apart for ten years. I couldn't wait to read this story after I devoured the rest of the series. I was not disappointed! They reconnect after Vann is finally released from prison. He was incarcerated after saving Drayton's life. He shouldn't have had to serve so much time, but Drayton's corrupt senator mom did her best to keep him there. They struggle at first to reconnect. Vann's self esteem is at an all time low, and he doesn't think he is worthy. Drayton feels guilty because he couldn't do more to get Vann released. Their struggles are real, but their love for each other is never-ending. I enjoyed every word. This is another highly recommended read from an incomparable author.

You know when you read a book so good, that there's just no words that will do it justice? That's how I kind of feel about this book. I don't really have a word or sentence to tell you how much I loved this book. How much it broke me but than put me back together ten times stronger.
In a nutshell, Vann and Dray are two halves of a whole. Literally. They just really worked. It was incredible reading about how in tune they were to each other. To see how much they loved each other, despite everything.
There's a bit of angst and I really enjoyed that. The story flowed so effortlessly between past and present. I loved reading the letters, I thought that was a wonderful touch to the story.
As for the characters themselves, holy hell! I cannot fall more in love with them more than I already do. Dray is the more romantic one in the relationship and I totally swooned. So. Hard. He has captured half of my heart while Vann took the other half with his tough personality but big heart.
I haven't read the first 4 books in the series, but if they are anything like A Worthy Man when it comes to writing, I cannot wait to go back and read them. Jamie has officially become a one-click author for me.

AHhhhh, yay!! I loved this! But unfortunately I stayed up until 2:30 at night to finish it, so I must go to bed.

So I've only read the second book of this series before this one, and I saw that it was probably best to read this series in order, but I felt, at least for this one, it wasn't needed. There wasn't a lot you needed to know about other characters from previous books to follow the plot of this one.
Which is, Vanngaurd Shaw has been in prison for 10 years because he killed his boyfriend's father in self-defense - the guy was hurting Drayton, said boyfriend, and probably would have killed him if Vann hadn't of fought back (also, I took a sec to laugh at their names before starting this because those are some funny names, which I think the characters themselves would and do agree with lol).
But then Drayton, who has become basically a billionaire (or has lots and lotssss of millions, whichever it is), was able to hire top level attorney's to get Vann out of prison, and this book is about them rebuilding what was lost that night when Vann killed a guy protecting the man he loves.
Now these two were like the perfect couple for me to love, despite the at times gooeyness and shmoop between these two. Because their love is so fierce and so deep that they just don't wish to ever be apart from one another. Or be with anyone else, for that matter. And they held onto each for TEN FREAKING YEARS without straying from each other, or calling quits, any of that, when most people would, no matter how much they loved each other.
But I guess these two found their one for each other, the one they never want to be without. Honestly, these two practically picked up where they left off from the first moment they saw each other again, that I was surprised that it took them until like 50, 60% in to have sex again (unless you count the blowjob earlier, which you could ;)). But Vann went through so much hell in jail - and before that, really - that it took time for him integrate back into society, and get to somewhere where his demons didn't eat away at him as much as before, so in a way I'm glad they waited so long.
I love reading about very flawed people falling in love and learning how to be together with all their imperfections, and loving the other even when the other was annoying the crap out of them, or even when in that moment you can't stand that person, you still love them. In a way Vann and Dray were that, but in a way they weren't - because they were both imperfect, but it felt as if their love was intense and consuming for the other that they rarely got annoyed with the other, if at all. Which, at first, rubbed me the wrong way, because human beings aren't like that, even when they're in love, but then in the end I just didn't give a fuck, because they two loved each other so much, and you felt it while reading, and you just ached for Vann and all he went through, and what these two had to endure before they got their happy ending, that I just didn't freaking care at the end of it.
I just wanted them to be happy, and they got to have that happy ending, but more importantly they got to be together, when they hadn't been able to for 10 fucking years. And that is what really got to me, that they got a second chance when most people don't even get a first with someone. This book reminded, in a way, of why I love reading romance novels. Of people finding someone they fall in love with so deeply that they never fall out of love, even when it's hard as fuck, but they still get to have someone like that for them, someone to lean on and talk to, to laugh with and wake up with and, shit...just...being able to have someone in your life for the rest of your life, when the majority of people in this world don't get that, that person who fulfills their lives in every way and makes them beyond happy and content.
Just...these two felt like a one in a million couple, and usually that makes me roll my eyes because there really isn't one special couple out of a million because of destiny or fate or just because they got lucky, and found the perfect person. Nah, it isn't like that, probably for anyone. I loved that these guys were always in love and there was never any question about it even during the 10 year separation. And they remained loyal to each other! I also loved the slow burn.
On the flip side, this felt a little too long for me. Also, a number of the plot points had me rolling my eyes a little .
