For the Demon Queen and her Rejects, things are guaranteed to get ugly whichever they choose.
On the plus side: They know where the Nephilim fleet is being built, they’ve got a killer new ride, a few surprising new allies, and they don’t all hate one another quite as much as they used to.
On the minus: The enemy fleet is coming online faster than they hoped, the new ride is running on backup life support, the new allies can barely be trusted, and there isn't anywhere in the galaxy where Thraven can't reach.
There’s nowhere to rest. There’s no time to reload. The stakes are higher, the pressure is up, and only one thing is certain:
One way or another, there’s going to be hell to pay.

These are interesting books if not a little off the deep end. I don’t mean the story-line is crazy or anything, but I just don’t go in for mystical powers that seem to appear in our lead character, Abigail Cage, or in the apparent legion of Nephilim. Yeah, I know how it go there, but this all seems to unbelievable to me, duh, which it is!
As you’ll remember, Abigail Cage, was a former Lieutenant in the Republic military. She was framed for weapons smuggling and sent to “Hell”, a maximum security prison with an appropriate name. She manages to break out with the help of Captain Olus Mann, Chief of Republic Intelligence Services and also, unknown at the time, by her nemesis, General Thraven. Gen. Thraven had one of his minions inject Cage with a serum that caused her to grow some incredible powers one of which makes her almost indestructible. She is learning how to control this new power which is physically changing her into something not human. Of course, she doesn’t want this to happen so she needs to find the second part of this injection which will prevent her from turning into some kind of monster.
While breaking out of “Hell” she’s accompanied by a group of prisoners who were all ex-miitary at one time. They did commit grievous crimes to get thrown into Hell, but they have seen Cage’s power and are resigned to let her lead their gang of rejects. And that’s what they call themselves, The Rejects, led by their Daemon Queen, Abigail Cage. Although, individually bad people, together under Cage, they vow to find Gen. Thraven and put an end to his megalomaniac plan of conquering the entire galaxy. One reason to do so is that under Gen. Thraven, humans are nothing more than slaves used to physically power his starship. Their blood is actually the fuel that pumps through the engines while these helpless people are hung on the walls of the engine room in considerable pain. Not a pretty sight.
So, Cage has found the location of Gen. Thraven’s massive armada and military stronghold. She plans to attack it, but she has only about a handful of ships which probably won’t do much against Thraven military. She needs to get General Kett’s forces involved big time. General Kett’s has been secretly building a counter military to go against Thraven, but he’s continually reluctant to make any moves. Cage things it’s time for him to do something and that would be to support her attack on Kell, Thraven’s stronghold. Gen. Kett is hidden in the Bain System, but Gen. Thraven has found that out and plans to attack him there while leaving enough forces behind to protect Kell. Gage needs to warn Gen. Kett, but she also see an opportunity to hurt Gen. Thraven while he’s away from his lair. It could be that either option or both will get the Rejects killed.
A very good and engaging book. A lot gets explained here so we now know more about the forces under General Thraven and those working for General Kett. Evil vs good, that’s what it’s all about. I seemed to have read through this book quickly so the writing has to be good for me to do that. I think I just might continue with this series although I don’t feel the normal excitement to do so. I wonder why?
The Devil’s Do – M.R. Forbes (Chaos of the Covenant #3)
The third book in M.R.Forbes Chaos of the Covenant series and the stakes get higher, the battles bigger and the one-liners wittier and cutting (in some ways physically).
Queenie’s world gets larger and more dangerous, with the introduction of Kett and his allies, Airi comes back more powerful thanks to the gift. Captain Mann is being framed for more and more atrocities and he really cannot get a break, a bit of a worry for such an intelligent and politically powerful figure.
Bastion has a new nickname, one which will be understandable once you read why, Jester takes slightly more centre stage, but it does not go well. Jequn takes over the not doing much character role. Dak gets to be bigger than Pik and that is about it for his character development in this one. Pik gets a lot more focus and is turning into my favourite character, very funny and pretty useful in a fight. Gant is turning into a very capable leader for when Queenie isn’t there and Nerd is a fine addition and butt of everyone’s jokes.
Taken from review of Book #2 but still true - M.R.Forbes gives us exciting battles – both space and soldier based, relatable and funny characters, spies and aliens and now God and the fallen – in some shape or form, Book #3 – now he has added in the Seraphim and an alien based resistance as well as a human based army and general, the stakes are upping in each book.
Really hoping that Bastion, Nerd, Pik, Gant, Ruby all make it through to Book #7 but am not holding my breath!
A great read and great characters, thank you Mr M.R. Forbes.
The series isn't a set of 7 books. It's one long book with 7 chapters presented as "books" for easier reading. They are arbitrarily split based on the number of pages. That's why each "book" has a cliff hanger—there is no separate story arch with resolution in each chapter. The whole thing is one endless pulp.
That's why the review is applicable to the whole series and every chapter individually. They are virtually the same plot with too many endless details of action/fighting scenes that just annoy after a couple of times and not enough story, world building, or character development to make it more than a junk space fantasy that feels like a "fast food" type of reading.
Looks like the author was training his writing muscles and repurposed—for the lack of the better word—many ideas and concepts from popular sci-fi books and movies. Think of the Chaos of the Covenant as the Star Wars with less story and more fights and a mix of Suicide Squad and Guardian of the Galaxy movies' characters as "rebels".
Abigail the Demon Queen is changing to look more like one as her power increases. Gloriant Thraven is one step ahead of them even though they win small victories. Thraven decodes the location of General Kett's location and hopes to capture or destroy both Abigail and Kett in the Bain system. Meanwhile, Abigail and the Rejects locate the base where Thraven is building the enhanced warships. The Queen sends part of the Rejects to take out the incomplete advanced warships, while she and the rest go to Bain to warn General Kett. The Rejects and allies manage to take out Thraven's new warships with much cost and Loss. However, Colonel Brink, Kett's commander takes command of all including the Rejects. This doesn't sit well with the Rejects so they sit back to bide their time. Meanwhile in the Bain System, the Queen rescues Kett but is unable to kill Thraven. However, Thraven is also unable to kill the Queen. They fight to a draw both depleting their power and losing important allies and assets. Will General Kett get the Queen under his command? Will the Queen co-opt command of some or all of Kett's army? Will she gain more power and stop her transformation? I am now downloading the next book "Kill the Queen".
To say that this series is heavily influenced by the Star Wars would be a monumental understatement to the extent that with this book I had continuous sence of déjà vu. As a result of that, I am developing a love-hate relation with this series. On one hand the pace is fast, the characters are appealing - LOVE Gant, want to adopt him, and bringing Seraphim - Nephilim aspect in to science fiction gives it an unusual and interesting twist. On the other hand, as mentioned , the influence of Star Wars is so overwhelming, that any moment I am expecting Thraven to go Darth Vader "I am your father" on Abby. Also, the end of the book left a gigantic hook dangling in front of the reader. Well, I am, for one, is hooked. Need next book ASAP. (Pretty please)
I've read Many books by this author and have liked them all. That being said, this is an especially good read. I can barely stop reading the books except to catch my breath as the Rejects fight against unimaginable enemies known and unknown. The strength of his character development and world building is awesome and visual in their descriptors.
This is fast-paced action, but still with a lot of details that had a lot of thought going into them. I thought the first book was a bit too much Star Wars Lord Vampires in Space and I'm so glad this book didn't follow that path. I don't know if either of the authors approve, but this series remind me a bit of the Paratwa Saga. Not in the story line, but details, action, hacking etc. Read them both!
The story continues here and this book is another page turner. The blend of individual combat and space battles is welcome. The metaphysical elements are expanded but without annoying anyone’s beliefs or sensibilities, I think. If one more faction is added I may need a diagram to sort them all out, though.
Forbes is a helluva a sci fi novelist! If you like space operas and some military sci-fi, it's hard to go wrong with Forbes. I can't think of a single book this author has written that I haven't given at least four stars to or more. I know I can always count on this author for quality writing and entertainment. Series and author are both highly recommended!
This series is interesting, fun and exciting. One book flows into the other with non stop action. The characters are people you root for or despise..but they are definitely not boring.Bravo to the author..and please hurry with the next book!
Another fantastic book by Michael. I have loved every book in the series and just can't stop! Good twists and turns, lots of action and did I mention? FREAKIN SPACESHIPS!?
One of the problems with achieving great success against an overwhelming adversary is that it draws attention and it's always attention from the worst possible sources.
I truly do love Mike's works and when I'm finished with the Chaos series I'm moving to his next series and on again until I have nothing left to read by him...HE'S THAT GOOD ! ! !
This was another good read by Mr Forbes. The book was well written and full of action both on the ground and in space . I highly recommend this book to any science fiction fans.
Recently discovered this series - this is the weakest of the three so far. It does a good job with plot advancement and I see it being very important in the series overall. However, it didn't capture me like the first two. I am excited to see where the series goes though!
Well this one was another interesting story, I got my wish and Captain Gaul is no more, now we have the General Kett. I will be looking forward to his demise, the Gloritant I know will have to wait. Onward to the next one.
Definitely enjoying this series and it’s characters. The Rejects are awesome but I also really like the character of Olus Mann. Lots of good action in this one and I particularly liked the Stargate type idea of aliens posing as ancient earth gods. On to the 4th book!
Some of the plot twists are surprising (nice!), while others are somewhat predictable. Generally, a good read, and the series is (finally!) growing on me! Onwards...
Good Story story as usual. Fast paced for the most part. On occasion could be a little dull, but for the most part a story and series I recommend highly.
I've read the whole series M.R. Forbes Writes a good story and stays within the believable and the characters stay within the first established character mold.
