This volume was better than the Oracle of Season and Ages version but still missing a few marks. The Majora's Mask story was able to bring back the nostalgic quirkiness of the game, but also I forgot how weird the ending gets.
The Link to the Past story just didnt seem to capture charm of that game. On it's own the story was a little more on the simple side. The one interesting tidbit from this story was confirming why in older games Ganon is depicted as a pig.
If youre a fan of the games it is probably worth the read. It's not groundbreaking but it does provide another unique perspective of the classic games.

Esperaba que la historia de Majora's Mask me gustara tanto como la del videojuego, con eso no hubo sorpresas.
Pero Link to the Past fue increíblemente asombroso, definitivamente desconocer una historia la vuelve más atractiva. Además el diseño de esta Zelda es mi favorito hasta ahora.

I don't know if I'm missing something, but I was expecting Link to have the same origin story as the last book I read. It confused me that it was different. I'm not really a big game and have only played a couple of Zelda games so I don't know if all have different origins story's.
Once I got my confusion I really enjoyed this story and the bonus content is always great. I love the art work in these so much.
My only downside is that the second half was very rushed like I found in the last on I read. For the last part we where in a completely different place and I would have really like to see more of it, but I felt like I was pulled through it and only had little portion pointed out at me as it flew past.
Still this is a fun read and I love the world of Hyrule.

Pues la verdad no me gustó. The Legend of Zelda Majoras Mask es mi Zelda preferido, quizá no ha acaparado tanto los reflectores como otros juegos de la franquicia, pero a lo largo del tiempo ha sabido ganarse su status como un juego de culto y con una fanbase bastante grande, al punto en que su remasterización fue uno de los eventos anunciados más esperados desde que Nintendo comenzó a lanzar remakes de los juegos de The legend of Zelda provocando rumores y cientos de peticiones por parte de los jugadores a la compañía.
Majoras´s Mask es algo atípico dentro de la saga pues mientras que en otros juegos de la misma nos encontramos con historias muy típicas que siguen la fórmula del viaje del héroe y nos presentan escenarios que aluden a un viaje épico donde se podrán vivir 1000 aventuras distintas con un villano terrible a vencer, Majoras Mask nos presenta algo diferente y además inquietante.
The legend of Zelda Majoras Mask (el juego en el cúal se basa este manga) Es una secuela de Ocarina of time, un videojuego cuya trama principal involucra a nuestro protagonista Link en una batalla en la que debe viajar a través del tiempo para enfrentarse a un mal terrible pero que al final de dicha historia regresa a su época desconectando ese futuro alternativo de la línea de tiempo original y por ende haciendo que ninguno de sus logros sea relevante ni pueda ser recordado en el “presente”, para agregarle aún más carga emocional al asunto al final de su travesía el y su hada compañera Navi terminan separándose por lo que al principio de Majora´s Mask vemos a un Link deprimido internándose en el bosque perdido, un lugar donde viven las hadas y al que posiblemente su amiga haya regresado al final de su aventura. Pero todo acaba mal cuando es asaltado por un personaje llamado “Skullkid” que porta una máscara horrenda, lo persigue hasta un agujero y llega al Mundo de Términa, una copia retorcida del reino de Hyrule en el que incluso las personas se parecen a sus homólogos del otro mundo y que ponen a Link en una situación de lo más peculiar pues aunque parecen ser sus amigos son personas totalmente diferentes, si no fuera ya suficiente el Skullkid transforma a Link en un ser de madera y lo deja a su suerte, es entonces cuando aparece el “vendedor de máscaras felices” que le explica que la máscara que porta el tal skullkid se llama “máscara de majora” un artefacto de orígenes demoniacos que era usado en rituales y cuyo poder causó grandes cataclismos en el pasado y que por lo tanto tuvo que ser sellada y le pide a Link que recupere esa máscara antes de que algo terrible suceda, dicho y hecho más adelante nos enteraremos de que efectivamente Skullkid le ha jugado una broma a la mayoría de los habitantes de Termina y que además ha puesto en marcha la caída de la luna dentro de los próximos 3 días para causar el fin del mundo…
Lamento que la sinopsis sea tan larga pero necesitaba el contexto para explicar porque el manga no esta a la altura del material de origen y que solo es algo hecho por encargo a unas artistas bastante talentosas.
Majora´s Mask (el juego) aunque tiene su argumento principal y su típica estructura de un Zelda de ir a cada una de las 4 mazmorras a salvar a una deidad antigua para que nos ayuden al final de los 3 días y detener al Skullkid la verdad es que el juego no se centra totalmente en eso pues si así fuera sería un Zelda bastante corto y en realidad este opta por hacer una dinámica tipo “cadena de favores” para tener la “experiencia completa” pues en la dimensión de Términa las máscaras son objetos importantes que simbolizan un lazo entre Link y los habitantes de ese mundo y a lo largo de nuestra aventura tendremos que ayudar a la gente y resolver sus problemas para obtenerlas, estas acciones implican saber cuales son sus últimas voluntades antes de la caída de la luna y también averiguar que fue lo que les hizo el Skullkid y son estas “mini-tramas” las que van enriqueciendo el argumento principal y aumentando el sentimiento de pérdida del personaje principal pues como es imposible ayudar a todos en tan solo 3 días y además cumplir el objetivo de liberar a los dioses y recuperar la máscara maldita, ahora Link al final de cada ciclo deberá tocar la canción del Tiempo para regresar al amanecer del primer día y conservar las máscaras obtenidas pero perderá ese lazo que formó con alguno de los personajes volviendo a recordarle que la gente no va a acordarse de el ni de ninguno de sus logros.
Súmenle a eso que el mundo de Términa esta lleno de fantasmas, monstruos, deidades y templos olvidados, cementerios y unas canciones bastante deprimentes como “la canción de la curación” (cuyo poder permite literalmente exorcizar a un alma en pena y convertir su dolor y su voluntad en otra máscara) y tenemos al Zelda más raro y triste de todos, que deja de lado la exploración para centrarse en la obtención de objetos y sus respectivos trasfondos.
Entonces es por todo eso que al menos para mi, el manga no solo no valió la pena si no que además fue una pérdida de tiempo exceptuando el capítulo adicional donde quieren explicar el origen de la máscara de Majora y su posible relación con otro personaje, pero primero vayamos por partes…
Primero y antes que nada, reconozco que las artistas que se hacen llamar “Akira Himekawa” son muy talentosas y en otras entregas de los mangas de Zelda han sabido adaptar bien los juegos y darles un toque personal, agregando interacciones nuevas y también giros para sorprender a los conocedores de la franquicia, disfruto mucho de su trabajo y por eso entiendo lo que acabo siendo el producto final de esta entrega, pues como ellas mismas lo mencionan al final de esta historia, Nintendo solo les dio acceso a la demostración jugable del videojuego y las hicieron lanzar el primer número a la par del lanzamiento del título, por lo que solo pudieron trabajar con lo que Nintendo les fue revelando del argumento principal, haciendo de este manga un producto accesorio para promocionar el juego que solo se limita a medio contar la trama central pero sin meter ninguna de las interacciones que enriquecían a la historia, algo de lo que ellas no son culpables pues los diálogos y el dibujo son excelentes como siempre pero es imposible negar que las limitantes impuestas por la compañía les terminaron cortando las alas en muchos aspectos excluyendo elementos clave en la historia como los viajes en el tiempo (que aquí solo hay un par y uno ni se explica quien lo provocó) y la mismísima canción de la curación que es de las cosas más recordadas del título y que nos dio momentos inolvidables como la escena de “el duelo de Darmani” donde un muerto se lamentaba por no poder regresar de la tumba a salvar a su gente o como la escena de “la muerte de Mikau” donde también otro difunto le pide ayuda a Link para salvar a los hijos de su amiga y lo hace morir en paz. Entre otras cosas, el vendedor de máscaras felices es un personaje que no aporta nada y medio se intuye que el tiene algo que ver con los males que aquejan a Términa pero sus apariciones no llegan a ningún lado, se removieron por completo todas las demás máscaras del juego y un montón de personajes, quitaron los templos y la última zona del juego que en mi opinión era la más interesante porque aparecía el cañon de Ikana, un lugar donde la línea que separa al mundo de los vivos y el de los muertos esta muy difuminada y era la zona más perturbadora del juego y que me habría encantado verla adaptada.
Por si no fuera poco se pierde ese tono inquietante y misterioso que rodea a Términa y sus leyendas y se perdieron unas oportunidades excelentes para decirnos quienes eran los niños lunares, el vendedor de máscaras, la tribu de la leyenda y el origen de como se llegó a forjar la máscara de la fiera deidad, algo que vuelvo a resaltar, se que no es culpa de las mangakas porque ellas no sabían que estos detalles eran importantes para el trasfondo de la historia.
Por mi parte, no voy a recomendar este manga porque aunque no me gusta que me entreguen la misma historia 2 veces, a mi en lo particular no me parece una digna adaptación de la experiencia “Majoras´s Mask”, para eso mejor jueguen el videojuego que esta excelente no sin antes comentar que este manga es la excepción a la regla y que el resto de trabajos realizados por “Akira Himekawa” son bastante buenos…

as difficult as it may seem, you can’t review the manga series based on the tloz games with the actual games in mind. the stories are different and have elements and details that aren’t present in the games. still, these are really enjoyable to read, especially if you want a short introduction to the legend of zelda (like i’d said in my last review for the ocarina of time manga), and definitely worth taking the time out for if you’re never gonna play the games.
anyway, absolutely loved reading this, especially because of majora’s mask. even though the second part was a bit rushed, i understood why and i loved the way it was handled in the end.

In regards to a review, l shall say this.
I have never played a link to the past before reading this, it has occurred to me in all my years as to why l have not. It is quite different to other zeldas in terms of story but a good one in that.
For majoras mask, l have learnt much from this reading. The reasons behind skull kids rule and most of all the men behind the masks.
Beautifully drawn throughout. It gets a 5 star from me and so far has been the saddest. Moral behind the lines, be yourself no matter what anyone tries to turn you into.

Read-aloud w/ a 5yo.
Manga is a challenging read-aloud! Voice acting becomes reeeeeeaaaaaal important.
I’d say the Majora’s mask story was 3 stars. The Link to the Past story was excellent - 5 stars. I don’t remember these games well enough to decide if the manga did them justice. The kiddo’s review: “My favorite parts are the flashbacks because you really get to see why everything’s happening.” Pretty on point there, actually.

This book is a great story for any legend of Zelda franchise lovers. It contains two stories from separate games but although they are somewhat short stories they manage to put the main story of the games well into the book. I would recommend this book to anybody that likes to read at a lower reading level but it might be too easy for advanced readers.

04.07.25 Updated Edit: A LINK TO THE PAST IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS WAITING FOR!
(I read the "last" part of Majora's Mask on my phone since I couldn't take my physically copy to work, so I thought I finished the whole book by confusing the short story for A Link to The Past. BUT NO. I just went back & actually read the real one which is a second, unrelated tale in this edition.)
A beautiful romance between Link & Zelda - I was DYING for this since Ocarina of Time left me hanging and the other books until now barely explored their connection.
Ocarina walked (& gave me a bittersweet ending of love) so that THIS story could run away with my heart with that blissful ending!
Other things to love: the unassuming apple farmer Link, a heroic papa&mama, a selfless uncle, a smoother overview of Link collecting pieces he needs (since this tale focuses more on character & relationships) & the wild bestie, Ghanti.
I thought Agahnim (a Ganondorf pawn) should've had less shallow reasoning for his evil, but oh well. I can overlook it since I was just Princess Zelda-starved at this point.

Majora's Mask-
I like the slightly more serious atmospheric feeling to this story!
Quick great points:
-The small twist at the end of who was responsible was a nice touch.
-The masks and what happens when you wear them brought up my interest level.
-Link's changes when wearing the Zora mask & the Fierce Deity mask were especially PEAK. Hell yeah, more of those transformations please!
-I want to know more about the giants. I liked their mysterious & helpful involvement.
-The monkeys were cute, okay!
But again, for a series about the legend of ZELDA, one flashback box of her appearance in this Majora's Mask & minor appearances of her in Oracles (previous book) is struggle street for myself who views her as my favourite character.
Give me Zelda in The Legend of Zelda, damn it.
It also frustrates me a bit trying to question how Link doesn't know Skull Kid considering the OoT's book events since this one didn't explain the lapse in memory at all. Googling doesn't help much either when the answers I find don't entirely explain everything. The book should've found a way to make that connection or (lack of) clear. I'm still not sure if I agree with the speculated Google answers &/or if I think it's bad writing on the author's part.
I'm inclined to the bad writing opinion when we also never actually find out why or where so I'm not sure what the point was of including that to begin with. And I'm given to understand that this is a standalone or sequel conclusion of Ocarina of Time, sooo...
However, the short story at the end of this half of the book was a fascinating tale of the origins of Majora's mask and gives me dark fairy tale vibes- so that was a cool bonus.

A beautiful romance between Link & Zelda - I was DYING for this since Ocarina of Time left me hanging and the other books until now barely explored their connection.
Ocarina walked (& gave me a bittersweet ending of love) so that THIS story could run away with my heart with that blissful ending!
Other things to love: the unassuming apple farmer Link, a heroic papa&mama, a selfless uncle, a smoother overview of Link collecting pieces he needs (since this tale focuses more on character & relationships) & the wild bestie, Ghanti.
I thought Agahnim (a Ganondorf pawn) should've had less shallow reasoning for his evil, but oh well. I can overlook it since I was just Princess Zelda-starved at this point.

Majora's Mask-
I like the slightly more serious atmospheric feeling to this story!
Quick great points:
-The small twist at the end of who was responsible was a nice touch.
-The masks and what happens when you wear them brought up my interest level.
-Link's changes when wearing the Zora mask & the Fierce Deity mask were especially PEAK. Hell yeah, more of those transformations please!
-I want to know more about the giants. I liked their mysterious & helpful involvement.
-The monkeys were cute, okay!
But again, for a series about the legend of ZELDA, one flashback box of her appearance in this Majora's Mask & minor appearances of her in Oracles (previous book) is struggle street for myself who views her as my favourite character.
Give me Zelda in The Legend of Zelda, damn it.
It also frustrates me a bit trying to question how Link doesn't know Skull Kid considering the OoT's book events since this one didn't explain the lapse in memory at all. Googling doesn't help much either when the answers I find don't entirely explain everything. The book should've found a way to make that connection or (lack of) clear. I'm still not sure if I agree with the speculated Google answers &/or if I think it's bad writing on the author's part.
I'm inclined to the bad writing opinion when we also never actually find out why or where so I'm not sure what the point was of including that to begin with. And I'm given to understand that this is a standalone or sequel conclusion of Ocarina of Time, sooo...
However, the short story at the end of this half of the book was a fascinating tale of the origins of Majora's mask and gives me dark fairy tale vibes- so that was a cool bonus.

This third installment in the Legendary Edition series is by far the best. It features the best art and storytelling. As a fan of both games (Majora's Mask and A Link to the Past), I had high expectations for this book, and it did not disappoint.
Akira Himekawa, the author, had limited material to work with for Majora's Mask, yet the result goes to show the strength of good storytelling. Majora's Mask is my favorite Legend of Zelda game, and while I may be biased, both stories in this edition are exceptional, immersive world-building tales.

I think I need more nostalgia for all of this. As it is, I'm reading in a format I'm not familiar with, with a narrative I'm not familiar with, and it just made me want to play the game instead. If I had played the game before perhaps I would be noticing little expansions. Then again it's possible I'd notice it's just a straight up rehash. I think this was probably just too far outside my current interests. It did make me want to play the game though so it's not bad.

Es asombroso ver como trasladan la historia de un videojuego al manga. Más aún teniendo en cuenta que este proceso comenzó a la par con el desarrollo del videojuego.
Encontrar una lectura que rememora un videojuego que me marcó desde la infancia es una experiencia asombrosa, cabe resaltar el hermoso trabajo artístico, lo bien resumida que está la historia para este formato, y lo entretenida que es.

La primera historia del Skull Kid y la máscara esta entretenida, el buscar las cuatro máscaras de los cuatro gigantes, La luna toda creepy. Las razones de Skull Kid. Me gusto. 4
La otra de Aganhim y los sellos, esta interesante, pero muy apresurada, por ejemplo hay una parte donde tiene que conseguir tres medallones, y es así de super rápido. Igual la pelea con el malo del final, sin emoción. 2

Este me lo leí porque Majora's Mask es uno de los juegos favoritos de mi hermano por lo que él tenía su historia. Son súper monas las historias, de verdad.
Es como jugar al juego de Zelda porque te interesa la historia pero sin jugarlo porque te pones a leer, do you know what i mean?

Awesome adventures, as always with Link. Art was mediocre, but easily consumable. The moon in Majora's Mask was absolutely stunning. Overall worth a read.

Really enjoyable and quick read despite the size. Majora’s Mask was definitely a nostalgia trip but actually enjoyed A Link to the Past more in this collection, but all 408 pages were fantastic.

Akira Himekawa is the pseudonym of a writer-artist manga team.
It seems Nintendo trusted them with coming up with their own stories to make the manga interesting on its own, yet still faithful enough to the series.
They expertly took into account how boring it would be to read about Link fighting hordes of monsters and solving puzzles inside of temples, and instead gave him a voice and introduced small interactions with other characters that add more content to the story; similar to how a movie would add something that isn’t explicit in a book.
Majora’s Mask is my favorite Zelda game, yet this manga rendition felt rushed, where Link only went through the motions yet missed out on the rich variety of character interactions in the game. It’s no wonder this happened though, since Himekawa states that they were hired to create the manga even before the game was released, so they only had a few trailers and such to work with.
They make up for it in two ways though: 1) the first 18 pages of the manga are in full color, and 2) at the end, they included an original story about the origin of Majora’s Mask. I don’t know if it’s considered canon by Nintendo, but it’s enjoyable anyway.
As for the A Link to the Past manga, it is worlds better. The story, though appropriately condensed, has more substance when it comes to the characters. They have meaningful interactions, inner turmoil, existential conflicts, and explicitly stated motivations that fuel the richness of the story.
If you’re a Zelda fan, you’ll definitely find something to enjoy in this manga. It’s not boring just like reading a step-by-step playthrough of the game.
If you’re not a Zelda fan however, these stories might seem too rushed or lacking in substance to you.
Lastly, the back pages include an interview with Himekawa and Eiji Aonuma (one of the producers for the Legend of Zelda). They share an interesting tidbit about how the Rito in Wind Waker were partly influenced by an original story that Himekawa wrote for the Ocarina of Time manga.

I really love this one.
The Majoras Mask Part is a fun extension to the Game. Though it may seem a bit rushed storywise at some points (but to be fair Majoras Mask on its own could be multiple volumes long if you want to cover every aspect of the story) its still a very nice bonus content for the Game. Majoras Mask is one of my favorite Zelda Games of all time and the manga really manages to capture the vibe and artstyle of the original. Its also cool to see a bit more of the Skull Kid's past and the climax was really nicely done with Kafei and Anju.
For the A Link to the Past Manga: I absolutetly loved it. I really like how Link got so much personality and character depth added to him inthe Manga. The whole Backstory with his Parents and Agahnim is a really cool additional content to the game.
I also love the inclusion of Ghanti the thief. Her character just adds more life to the story and world building and her synergy with Link is really cool. Overall i loved how hyrule and its citizens were portrayed in the manga and how it gave you a glimpse to Ganondorfs past.
