I know. I should have expected a relentless downer of book since it has “tormented”in the title and it’s Kate Hewitt. But it’s one of the Balfour series books and I wanted to see how Zoe’s story turned out.

Seems the H/h are both throwing pity parties when they meet. Zoe, our Paris Hilton of the sisters, has just found out she’s not a Balfour. Her mother had an affair while married and then promptly died in childbirth. Now Zoe has nothing but a loving father figure who raised her, a huge trust fund, and her health and youth.

Hero is hot and rich. But he has PTSD from the first Gulf war and is slowly going blind. He is also a cold bastard after he and heroine have a one night stand.

He continues to be a cold bastard when heroine tells him she’s pregnant - and when they eat together, shop together, drive in the car together . . . And yet, heroine loves him.

Why?

It must be in her DNA because he birth father is just like the hero – cold and creepy and rejecting.

Heroine is beyond annoying with her brittle laugh and pretend gaiety while her heart is breaking.

This baby is going to be a next generation character in an HP because these are seriously damaged parents.

*sigh*

Harlequin Presents can be awesome in their mind-boggling intensity, but this one was enjoyable in a less eye-rolling way, delivering the good gut-wrenching I love along with, of all things, a little actual character development.

Zoe and Max meet at exceptionally low points in both of their lives. Zoe, daughter of a well-known British gazillionaire, has just learned that an unknown man actually fathered her; she's dogged by scandalmongers and miserably unsure about where she fits in the world. Max, who already feels unmanned by an horrible event in his past, now has to face incipient blindness. The two meet and share a night together, with predictable HP consequences (honestly, someone needs to look into the industry standards for condoms because they apparently never work.)

Afraid she'll reject him when she knows about the sight loss he's hiding, Max pushes Zoe away... and pushes her away, and pushes her away. I wouldn't normally go for a romance in which the heroine is forced to keep pursuing the hero, but here it worked, because of what it said about Zoe's character. I would've appreciated a little more effort on his part at the end to win her back, because damnit, this is a romance and I'm a chick and I like that. So minus half a star for not delivering quite enough remorse/grovel/redemption/whatever.

You don't have to have read the rest of the "Balfour Brides" series to appreciate this one, and honestly I wouldn't bother; this was the first that didn't seem completely cookie-cutter. But I'm glad I didn't say the hell with the whole series, because this was the best recent HP I've read in quite a while.

Wow. Well, what can I say? I was all set to hate this book. hell, I DO hate it. it was a huge steaming pile of freshly crapped horse manure. zoe was pathetic. she was childish, selfish and stupid. no matter how I tried, I couldn't sympathize with her. In my eyes, she was completely unloveable.
as for Max, don't get me started. he completely demoralised the blind. yes, its hard. yes, it takes things away from you but it doesn't mean the end. there is Braille and guide dogs and sticks and all kinds of support out there. and to say that his imminent blindness meant he couldn't be a good father is just ridiculous. sure you can't do certain things and its one of the hardest things to not know what your baby looks like but that doesn't mean you can't be a fun and involved dad. and blind people have lasting relationships all the time so him using it as an excuse to remain single irked me.
it also annoyed me that though the book was some 200 pages long, it only spanned them spending one night and maybe five days together and most of their encounters were negative or pointless.
the ONLY reason this book has two stars is because there's no miracle.
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

I really enjoyed this book. I love, love, love a tortured hero and he was that and more. Max is a man with a dark past facing a dark future, and there is no easy out. That's one of the things I really enjoyed: The h & H found happiness, but it wasn't because they fell in love and all of their problems vanished. What made it great was them finding happiness and dealing with a future that wasn't going to be perfect.

He was an alpha male who had vulnerability, and there's nothing sexier than that!

I really enjoyed the character of Zoe too. She's a spoiled heiress who hasn't really found where she belongs in life, and watching her face her demons and grow up was really rewarding. Seeing her help Max overcome his fears even more so.

A great emotional read. :)

"Zoe and the Tormented Tycoon" is the story of Zoe and Max.
When Zoe finds herself in an illegitimacy scandal, she realizes her whole identity has been a lie, and escapes from NY to drown her sorrows via partying. It is there she meets Max, a PTSD suffering war veteran, who is also drowning into the fears from his impending blindness.
Soon the two sad souls have a one night stand, which is followed by loads of cruel words, a surprise pregnancy and the h and H being at loggerheads.
If you like immature heroines and tortured heroes who literally are wallowing in self pity throughout the book instead of looking at any positives, this one is for you. The hero is hot and cold dealing with his "doom", the heroine finding ways to beg her pain away while the hero continually rejects her *insert eyeroll*
Im giving it an extra star for angst because me likey!

5 words. What a waste of time. I tried liking the book, but I really couldn't. As I got to the end, all I could think of was why why why did I even bother reading this book? Sure, the lessons the characters learn are pretty applicable to real life. But the story is just sooo cliche and really rather shallow. The pace of the book was way too fast and abrupt with many things left unexplained. Even the romance was practically non-existent. After reading the whole book, I honestly do not know what I just read. Really.

Let's start with Zoe. So she just found out she's illegitimate and she's so so sad because of it. She built her identity around who her parents were and so when she found out she had no blood connection with her father, she was superrrr sad and started self-pitying. Ok fine, acceptable. Your whole life suddenly shatters in front of you, sure, you'll break down a while. But I really can't stand it when people keep running from their problems. For a while, fine. But she's been running for so damn long it annoys me. Omg I'm getting annoyed talking about her. What's next... Yeah, the fact that she's a freaking socialite that really can't seem to do anything just gets on my nerves. Sure, maybe she's not very smart. But that doesn't mean she has to party the whole day and spend Daddy's money. Ugh. I hate heroines like that. She's freaking 26. Grow up, already? And I honestly don't believe she can fool herself that she's happy for soooo many years. Omg I cannot talk about her anymore. Does she have good points? I'm sure she does, she is pretty understanding and she can be sweet. But I can't like her because I feel her bad points far outweigh the good.

As for Max. He's going blind. Yeah, that's bad. And he's another one who starts self-pitying. But it's not so bad! Still. He lets his self-pity get in the way of everything and if Zoe hadn't gotten pregnant, he just might have lost his one and only chance at true love. Though i'm a bit skeptical of that. Ok. So his past was skipped over really quickly. I mean, it obviously caused him a lot of harm. But why didn't the author cover it more? I felt it was just brushed over and it wasn't given the weight it deserved.

Ok but his self-pity I can understand. I mean losing your sight is not easy. And it can cause you to lose your sense of security when you can't even perform basic tasks. Put that with the fact that he has a fear of not being able to see because of his past and I can understand why he's so insecure. But Zoe, I just cannot understand it. Yes, I agree, it's pretty bad, suddenly realizing she isn't who she is. But how does that affect her identity, her own uniqueness?

One thing that I felt was really lacking was the communication between them. I mean, you don’t just fall in love for no reason at all, do you? You can’t just look at someone and next moment you realise you love that person, right? There must be some interaction and I felt it was really lacking in this book. Its like a lot of the book was full of her insecurity issues. There was very little memorable parts between them. I don’t know, I just couldn’t see how they were in love. I just didn’t feel it. I felt like it was more of a grateful thing. And maybe lust.

The book was a little unrealistic too. I mean seriously. Which semi-blind person can just sense the person they “love” in the room? I honestly don’t think anyone can just sense it. And for goodness sake, he could just “see” her when he could barely see a thing else. Its just a tad unbelievable.

When I first started writing this review, I intended to give it 2 stars. After the 2nd para, I've decided it's a definite 1. And pardon me if the review isn't up to standard, it's my first review in about a month? But this book just inspired me to write a review. Gosh. I hope never to read this type of book again. I'm sorry, i know I'm mean, but I honestly can't help it.

I mean the storyline is pretty interesting. Most books don’t have a hero that is going blind with no sudden resolution of that problem in the end. So yes, it was unique in that sense. But I didn’t really see a HEA. I was kinda left hanging, not really knowing whether they would somehow work everything out.

And honestly. I can’t stand this. Is it really so coincidental that their protection failed the one time they made love and thus causing her to have a baby? Sure, I don’t mind babies being part of the plot, but I really can’t stand the whole plot resting on the baby. I’m trying to say that without the baby, nothing would have happened in the book. The two of them would have just gone on with their lives, probably never seeing each other again, just remembering that one amazing night they spent together.

Sigh, all in all, this was a book I just could not enjoy. Sure, it was different, but I felt it just didn’t have enough to make the romance believable and the love obvious. Too much time was spent on how each person felt rather than that essential communication between the characters for them to fall in love. Its not a book I would recommend to anyone. Its quite a pity though, the book could have been better if the characters didn’t spend so much time self-pitying. The one redeeming quality was that both of them “saw the light” in the end!

Pretty good. The hero had 2 issues that contributed to his angsty goodness. I didn't like the heroine much but she wasn't really bad or anything. I just have a hard time with books where all I can picture is Paris Hilton as the heroine. The writing was well done and the plot made sense.

Not my type of romance but I can't hate this. Standard aja ya apalagi ini cuma Harlequin romance.

This book was full of heart twinges and broken people trying to figure out who they are. The hero was incredibly compelling - he made my heart swoon and hurt for him on the regular. While the heroine was less relatable, she still went through an emotional journey that made me feel for her.

My biggest complaint would be that I thought they moved from "you're intriguing" to "I love you" very fast. And I would have loved to have seen something of an epilogue where we see how Max deals with the eventual culmination of his disability.

But that said, still a very worthwhile, memorable read.

Number 5 in the series. I seriously think most of the authors for this series had received a copy of the simple life staring Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie as part of their research of the lead female characters and their mindset.

What a depressing read!

Zoe was really an airhead socialite in the beginning, but she did not deserve that scumbag as birth father. He was unnecessarily cruel and a total jerk. My heart breaks for her! She was really better off without knowing him, and my respect for Oscar grew. Relationship is more than just blood.

Max was such an idiot. I feel for him, his pain and panic going blind. In his place I'd be the same so it was depressing as hell to read.

He and Zoe had huge familial baggage and emotional issues. His experiences really scarred him...but to see such a strong man with defeatist attitude was really negative. With modern technology and his fortune, it was surely pride and irrational fear that made life seem so bleak.

There are men and women born handicapped but achieved so much, there's really no excuse for his pessimistic outlook and worse, being so cruel to Zoe to drive her away.

I find their so called love unbelievable at all. He was downright nasty to her in each of their encounters, offering her glimpses of his gentler side only occasionally. He believed the worst about her yet still he wanted her. It was all lust,
I feel!

I know this is a series of eight, but the abrupt ending irritates me.

Everyone's talking about Zoe Balfour--the illegitimate heiress! She flies to New York to discover more about her biological family and goes a little wild, shocking even herself by spending one night with a gorgeous stranger....

The gradual loss of his sight has caused Manhattan mogul Max Monroe to close himself off from the world--a wife and child are most certainly not on his agenda! How will Zoe, once just a spoiled socialite and now unexpectedly pregnant, unlock the dark heart of a man who may never see his own child?

A good one!

A really heartfelt story, it was a refreshing change for once to see the H who was troubled & uncertain of himself. In a long list of the perfect alpha male heroes of M&B, it was a nice deviation for once to see the H struggling with his inner self whether it be to divulge his secret to h or to come to terms with his situation. Though I am giving it three stars due to the abrupt ending, it could have been better.

What a quick read. Finished it in an hour and half.

Zoe's not her father's real daughter. Apparently, her mom has her as a summer fling from some other man. Now completely lost and lonely, she traveled to New York to find her real father. But then he met Max..

Very short story yet very heart-wrenching one. Not exactly my favorite though, mostly because I don't feel—I can't feel Max's heart. I know he's troubled but still, I kind of hate him for making Zoe felt sad.

It's too short, in my opinion. Definitely need more closure. But then again, it's Harlequin! ;)

I liked this and will read more by Kate Hewitt. The characters were different and difficult, which made them interesting/memorable but I do have my doubts about them being in love. Also their fall-back behavior combined with the age difference makes me question how long their HEA will last. Also though the author did a great job with the setting.

Heroines who act all bitchy because they discover that the man whose loved them and taken care of them and provided money for their extravagant tastes is not their biological father don't deserve anything good. Not when there are so many people starved for love and attention both in real life and in books.

The premise hooked me. A hero losing his sight, hurting emotionally and certain his future is bleak, who unexpectedly gets socialite Zoe pregnant after one encounter. However, I had trouble with the fact he continually lashed out at her and pushed her away, and she kept coming back for more. It felt like his apology at the end wasn't enough to make up for his actions.

I thought this was an okay novel. I thought the relationship between Zoe and Max was a bit rushed and I was disappointed in the ending. I hope in the future novels in the Balfour bride series, we get to hear about the baby born to Zoe.
