While I admit to not having read many campaign books, this is, hands down, the best campaign book I've read. I am very excited to take my group through this story, which presents the party of adventurers with a puzzling mystery, and a whole city in crisis full of factions at odds with each other with which to solve it.
This is the first Symbaroum book that didn't completely wow me.
It has the same great artwork and dark feel as all the other books, but there were two problems.
1. The book had some editing problems. There were several double negatives throughout the book that caused me to pause and reread a section to make sure I understood what was going on. And aside from that, there were a lot of proofreading errors. I know they happen from time to time, but there were several in this one.
2. Three quarters of the adventure was spent finding out someone's name and where their room was, so the PC's, can finally get some clues as to the main storyline. I can appreciate that the players need to familiarize themselves with the area of the wolrd and the situation that they've stumbled into, but there were essentially many many hours of gameplay just to uncover a backstory. Maybe for gaming groups that meet weekly and have plenty of time to flush out details like that, that's fine. But for my group that meets maybe once or twice a month, it would take us forever to get through all those adventures just for a backstory.
Overall, it's another good installment in the Symbaroum line, but maybe not a great one. That said, I'm still going to play through it with my gaming group. But I'll be streamlining and combining things quite a bit to move the story forward at a faster pace.
This book is in two parts. The first is a lengthy section for players and GMs alike about the town of Thistlehold, which is likely to be the first touching point to the setting many players get, with its direct vicinity to the darkness and riches of the Davokar. A GM section then details out the secrets of Thistlehold's factions.
The meat of the book is Wrath of the Warden, the first adventure of the lengthy Throne of Thorns campaign. As an adventure it both excited and confused me. It's what I would want to play, with tons of different factions active in the story of a catastrophe of corruption in Thistlehold. But I also know my Symbaroum players, and think they will probably lose track of the factions quite easily. Still, I want to run it, and can imagine it being ultimately very lethal. I am looking forward to reading the 2nd adventure as well.
