Out of Innocence

Rate this book
A 15-yr old Scottish beauty immigrates to Idaho with her brother in 1914 to find a better life only to encounter death, evil men and Mother Nature lining up to stop her finding true love and realizing her dreams.
Like a mashup of “Brooklyn” meets “A River Runs Through It”— our female protagonist shows how a complex feminine lead can take the audience on as much of an adventurous ride as any man. This screenplay is pregnant with romance, lust, and love and littered with plenty of fistfights and shootouts that might leave us believing that only a woman who conquers the West is worthy of being described as having, ‘True Grit’.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written Scottish historical fiction book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a large set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great Scottish immigrant movie, or better yet a w mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

I started this book on a whim. The old saying..."Don't judge a book by its cover" -- so I opened it and waked into a familiar world, not of my own, but perhaps that of my ancestors in a voice that was much different. The historical aspects of this story in which events build and twists and turns ensue captivated me, as the avid reader. I wanted to know more, I could feel Belle's life before, now, then, here, there. It painted a vivid picture, as if I were sitting beside her on the train, meeting Harlow with her, perhaps a shadow in the darkness. Belle's character was so brave, so grown up, mature. I had to remember her age, note the year so that I would keep place. Her struggles did not define her, showing her old soul time and time again. She would just roll over. She drew on her sorrows and let that build her into a strong person. I loved how she felt when she arrived at Harlow's "Rainbow Ranch" and I felt as if I were seeing exactly what she was seeing.

Time moved quickly and the image of Harlow slowly changed with that passing time. I enjoyed the cross road with the arrival of Ben, feeling her love for him, as well as his for her and understood her decision, her vow carrying weight as it should. I felt that was stronger than just the text.

Moving through the story I felt Belle's heart beat and break over and over again and I felt her pick herself up and do what she needed to do to continue with this life. I loved her meeting Hank at the event and I was so sad when he disappeared because that connection between them could be felt indefinitely. When he showed back up years later I knew that this was her one true love.

Moving to the end, although the words were not spoken to a knowing I hope her dream was real and that they found one another, but I also felt like they both could have passed on and it could be their souls reuniting. It is left wide opened so one would never really know.

All in all, this book was touching, it was a great read and one that I would recommend to all. It was full of vivid events and pictures that build the story into a great journey.

"Out of Innocence" is a unique story, with an interesting main character and a plotline that is not predictable. Belle is young and intrepid, with a sense of humor. Bad things happen along her life journey, but she doesn't let them get her down. I would have given this book a higher rating, but while it was well written, the storyline was very choppy and there were no indications when a new section ended and another began within a chapter. Some authors use visual markers -- little symbols or a large/dropped capital or something to distinguish time passing, but that sort of cue was left out completely, which frequently drew me out of the story.

Can a Scottish girl leave her family and homeland and find a new home in America? Throughout the story, we discover a strong woman who despite personal tragedies, learns to dedicate herself to her family and finally find love. Well-written story. Set in the '20's, we too can experience the hardships of living on a farm. But the heroine knows how to deal with them. A good read.

2.5 stars. Poorly edited, many grammatical errors, spelling typos, punctuation and font-change errors. Content shifts without segues. And the author failed to end the story ... just tired of writing? Expected a true victory of Belle's heart and her immigrant spirit, and it did not come through.

Only the strong survive

I loved this story of a girl surviving so many bad situations to end with a happily ever after.
She always made the best of bad situations and never gave up hope. The ending is the best.

Not your typical novel

This book has more books and lows than any other modern I've read. It's sadly realistic, yet hopeful and endearing at the same time. The ending was the only component left lacking in my opinion, yet not enough diminish the book in any way.

Touching story

Story had interesting depictions of early immigration into America and about living a hard life but seeing only the good in it.

Very slow

A slow and heavy read. The content had potential to be better but it just didn't work. Only finished because I hoped it would put me to sleep. No luck. My brain just churned beside it.
