Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Teenager Sean is having horrific nightmares and after a particularly violent storm starts noticing disturbing changes to his body, strange voices in his head and that everyone is treating him differently, including his crush. As he delves into the history of New Haven, he learns that he holds the key to the destruction of mankind but it's one that can see him rule over all.

This was a great little read, the writing is fluid and it packs a lot into such a short novella. The length however seemed a little too short and I felt I didn't really have enough time to get to know Sean before it was finished. That being said I thought there were plenty of fun scenes, I especially liked the town people and their reverence for him which only confuses him until he learns his destiny. Although some of this at times felt almost comical in it's deliverance, there were some very effectively disturbing scenes that were absolutely chilling. Overall a great read and my first by Mr Faherty. Recommended.

When JG Faherty mentioned that he was looking for readers for his upcoming novella Legacy, I jumped at the chance!  I've always heard good things about his books and this one has an incluence from Lovecraft so I knew it had to be good.

The story starts out with a teenager named Sean who appears quite normal on the outside but inside his head, he is anything but normal. Strange dreams start plaguing him and he finds strange words running through his thoughts. After a freak storm happens, people begin treating him differently; almost deferring to him. His physical body is radically changing as well and he can't figure out why.

I had a lot of fun reading this one!  Faherty took the time to let me get to know Sean so I was invested in him early on. I knew enough about the secondary characters in the story to be interested in their fates as well. The storyline read well and Faherty's descriptions were outstanding!  In fact, check this one out -
"That’s why I had no trouble seeing the bilious green and ochre streaks in the purple-black masses hovering over Tall Pine Island. They looked like ordinary storm clouds infected with some type of horrible disease, their gaseous flesh gone gangrenous. The sickly lines of putrid color were like tracks of poison running through healthy tissue. Rather than forming random patterns, the ghastly hues radiated outward from a central point, a spiral design of meteorological cancer. As I watched, more lightning flared from the core of the spiral. It felt like I was inside one of those glass balls you see at museums, the ones where if you place a finger on the surface, tiny bolts of electricity dart back and forth."
How can you not see that in your mind while reading?!  Besides the excellent descriptions, Faherty writes in such a way that gives enough storyline to make it enjoyable but without bloating the story and bogging it down.

Overall, this novella was a quick, enjoyable read and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys some Lovecraft influences in their books.

I want to thank the author for providing me with a copy of the book for an honest review.

I have become a fan of JG work over the years. It started with Carnival Of Fear, then the two he wrote for Delirium Books which is now DarkFuse. This will be the Fifth book by JG Faherty I have read and enjoyed. The story is centered around a boy named Sean. Who lives in a small New England town named New Hope. He has this dream where a voice says "I am the Legacy, gate to the other sphere. Speak the words, those of the realms will enter three wide and seven strong." After he wakes from a thunderstorm, he notices things have changed. His body has changed and people are treating him different. He is hearing voices and seeing things. Not sure what is real he asked his friend Melissa. Will stop here, don't want to say to much. The story was fast paced and well written. It had a little bit of that Lovecraft flare to it. Legacy was a very good quick read. I gave it 4 stars.

Damn, I think this was my first JG Faherty read. It was damn good too. The small town of New Hope may have no hope, as one of the local science/math nerd kids goes all Old Ones squid mouth on a hamburger. The burger is just the beginning. Decisions must be made. Storms weathered. History will be written and everybody knows "History is everything…"

A very well written and quick paced Lovecraftian novella. I look forward to more from Mr. Faherty and have Fatal Consequences and a few of his older Delirium novellas in the queue already. Cool.

“Legacy” was published in 2014 (December) and was written by J. G. Faherty (http://www.jgfaherty.com). This is Mr. Flaherty’s fifth publication.

I obtained a galley of this story for review through https://www.netgalley.com. I would categorize this story as ‘PG13’ due to it’s dark nature. The story is written in the first person and is set in contemporary New England, USA. The primary character is Sean Black.

Black is a teenage science and math whiz, about to graduate early from High School. Other than that, he leads a pretty normal life, that is until the night of the storm. He has strange nightmares and imagines strange creatures. Then he begins to see changes in his body that none around him seem to notice.

Black finds a hidden room in the town library and reads there a collection of books that tell a strange history of his town. Leaving the library, he realizes he is at a decision point in his life. He can fight what is coming, save humanity, probably dying in the process. Or he can give in to his legacy, have the girl of his dreams, and rule a world plunged into chaos. What will he do?

This Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror/Short Story was a little on the strange side, very dark. It reminded me a little of stories written by Dean Koontz and Stephen King. It only took about 90 minutes to read, and it was well written. I have to say though, that I am not a Short Story fan. Had this story been expanded into a full novel I would have liked it more. I give it a 4 out of 5.

What a great story!! The descriptions captured my imagination so that I felt like I was on the porch with Sean watching the storm. I really enjoyed JG Faherty's take on the Cthulhu mythos. Sean is an entirely believable and sympathetic character. Fans of Lovecraft will enjoy this gem of a story. I wish it was longer because I didn't want it to end. A fun read 4.5 stars.

I have learned that a new story by JG Faherty is something to be savoured and enjoyed. 'Legacy' certainly falls into that category. This tale of a teenage boy going through a rite of passage like no other is a quick, enjoyable read that pays its dues to Lovecraft as a rich tribute. The pacing, characters and plot leaped off the (electronic) page and moved to an ending that was both rewarding (for the reader, if not for the inhabitants of New Hope!) and scary. Loved it, and I'm looking forward to Jg Faherty's next story.

JG Faherty’s horror story Legacy is entertaining, though a little light on scares and a bit heavy on teenage sex. It tries very, very hard to be Lovecraftian, using all the relevant phrases and names, but it does so at the expense of plot and characterization.

By trying too hard to evoke the themes and descriptions of our favorite horror author from Providence, Faherty occasionally descends into turns of phrase like, “Depraved clouds hung in repellent masses from the sky,” and, “behind a curtain of vulgar clouds”. We’ll leave off the question of what Faherty has against clouds to point out that just calling something “depraved” or “vulgar” doesn’t make it Lovecraftian. Are the clouds shaped like something vulgar? What makes them depraved?

The story’s main weakness is its utter lack of conflict. There’s no antagonist, no one to stop or even delay the events of the story. There’s a beginning, a middle, and an end, and all of it is not just inevitable, but unsurprising.

Despite these problems, there are some genuinely disquieting scenes here and there, and fans of Lovecraft will appreciate the references and name-dropping. Too short to be a novella, too long to be a short story, Legacy is a very odd kind of coming-of-age tale. With tentacles. And depraved clouds.
