Dr. Travis Stork is an Emmy(R)-nominated co-host of the award-winning talk show "The Doctors" and a practicing board-certified emergency medicine physician. He graduated magna cum laude from Duke University and earned his M.D. with honors from the University of Virginia, where he was elected into the prestigious honor society of Alpha Omega Alpha for outstanding academic achievement. Born and raised in the Midwest, Dr. Stork is a fervent believer in helping patients feel empowered when it comes to their health. Dr. Stork practices what he preaches and likes to teach by example, biking to work every day, rain or shine. While he doesn't expect individuals to give up their cars, he is passionate about enlightening individuals on simple ways to attain and maintain good health based on their own life and circumstances. He believes that oftentimes, when people come to the E.R., it's already too late. That's why he takes such pride in teaching people how to avoid preventable illness before it happens. Most people don't realize that they make over 200 health-related decisions every day that dictate how well and how long they live. Dr. Stork believes health is not about the gym or a deprivation diet; health is achieved by focusing on those seemingly inconsequential 200-plus decisions people make throughout the day.

Scroll down to see my progress after one week on The Doctor's Diet!

I am obsessed with The Doctor's tv show. They have great little health and beauty tips based off of real medicine. When I recently saw their episode about Dr. Travis's new diet I went online and bought the book immediately. Every diet is going to be challenging but most of them work. If you follow most diets you will lose weight but at what cost. Most of them are not healthy and most are not sustainable. Once you get off of the diet you start to put back on all of the weight and that is the cycle most people have to deal with. This diet stops that cycle.

The diet is developed by a doctor and is based on real science. The diet is broken into 3 phases. The first phase last 2 weeks. It is called The Stat Plan. It is developed to make you lose a lot of weight fast and break your addiction from sugar. It basically cuts out a lot of carbs but not all carbs. This is not a carb free diet. They do replace the unhealthy carbs with healthy carbs that come from natural foods. This is how we should be eating anyway so I feel confident that the premise for this diet is medically sound. You stay on the Stat Plan phase of the diet for 2 weeks.

After the initial 2 weeks you start the second phase of the diet called Restore. You are able to have a few more foods that were previously forbidden including an additional serving of grains. You are also told during this entire diet that you should be including at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. After working this phase of the plan for 2 weeks you have a choice to make. Either you have more weight to lose and need to go back on the Stat Plan for an additional 2 weeks and start the cycle over or you have reached your goal weight and you can move onto the Maintain phase of the diet.

This third phase of the diet is what sets this diet apart from other diets I've tried. This phase of the diet is how you will need to eat for the rest of your life to ensure your weight stays off. This is a healthy, science based balanced diet.

I have seen several reviews complaining about this book and rating it low, siting the fact that you have to exercise and you lose "freedom" to eat what you want. I say these reviews are ridiculous! This diet was written by a medical professional and there is no magic pill. Some people think once you've read the book all of the weight falls off with no other effort. That is not the case. This book tells you what you NEED to do to get the weight off, keep it off, and restore your health, as well as prevent disease.

Yes I criticized others for rating this book unfairly so I feel that it's necessary for me to hold myself to the same standard. I am going to start this diet and do the first two phases. I will then come back in approximately a month and let you know how this diet works, how I felt on the diet, and I will give my final rating for the book. Obviously if the diet works according to what is written I will keep the 5 star rating. I will try to follow the diet exactly as written.

Look for the final review on this book around the second week in May.......

So here's my update after 1 week on Dr. Travis' Stat Plan

This week has not been as tough as I thought it would be. Dr. Travis says if you break you addiction to sugar you will not want to eat as much and you won't crave more sugar. I am excited to say what he says is true! I am a sugar-holic! My favorite food is bread and potatoes and I have a health condition called panhypopituitarism. This causes me to have to take steroids daily (which make you hungry and thirsty as hell) and thyroid meds for low thyroid. This makes it extra hard for me to lose weight. It also causes me to fatigue easily so exercise is a tiny bit harder.I'm not telling you this so you can throw me a pity party but I am telling you this so you can understand how well this diet works. I excercised minimally. You are supposed to do 30 minutes a day but I have time and honestly my a/c was broke this week and I didn't want to work out in such hot weather. I know lazy right? Ok so this week in only 7 days.........I lost 8 pounds!!!!

That's right over a pound a day!!! If I had exercised I'm sure I would have done better but I am striving to improve each week following this plan and it is very doable. I am a mom of 2 kids, my husband is gone a lot, and I babysit kids all day, run them around to extra activities and am always busy. If I can do it, then you can too. IMO this book is 5 stars and worth every star!

My husband went on this plan with me and he is a severe diabetic. He takes 4 shots of insulin per day ranging from 50-70 units of insulin per shot. This is a huge amount of insulin and cost over $800 per month. His blood sugar still ranges in the 220-350 range. After a couple of days on this diet his blood sugar went to 100-150 and his insulin usage is down to 2 shots per day of 5-20 units per shot. This is a HUMONGOUS!!! improvement!Diabetics run get this book NOW! This very well can and will save your life if you are able to stick with it.Because diabetes is so close to my my heart I am adding his update in this review as well. I think it's important for those out there that are living with diabetes and struggling to control it. In the first week he lost 7 pounds and did not follow the plan as exactly as I did. He had to have an extra snack between meals that I did not have but it was necessary to control his blood sugar.

I have 1 more week left on the stat plan and then it's time to move on to the restore phase. I will update next week and let you guys know the progress but my final rating will be 5 stars because even if someone needs to lose weight fast for a wedding or vacation I think 8 pounds in a week is more then enough. Of course don't expect that kind of weight loss every week. Watch for my new update next week!!

2 Week UPDATE

After 2 weeks on the Stat Plan I have lost a total of 11 pounds and my husband has lost 12.

Because Easter is tomorrow I will not be starting the Restore Plan until Monday. I hope I don't gain too much weight but I am going to eat a holiday meal tomorrow. Once you start the Restore phase of the diet you continue it for 14 days. I will let you know how much I lose on that phase of the diet which I assume is not going to be as drastic as the stat plan. Everyone who is having trouble dieting or if you don't know what to eat on a diet then definitely buy this book. A lot of things that I thought were healthy really are not and I only learned that from this book. It's definitely worth every penny! I do recommend buying a hard back copy because I have both and the kindle copy is very hard to look back through to find recipes and food list. The hard back copy has little sticky notes marking the areas I need to refer back too and it's much more convenient.

Second paragraph - week 8 update

I have been on the plan for four weeks now and have lost a total of 12 pounds! (Hence the five stars). Most of the information is basic but I also found his reviews on certain ingredients (i.e. coconut oil, gluten) to be quite honest and he tells why he feels that way. I have not felt hungry at all on the diet (and I have never been known as a "light-eater"). Maybe I can do an update in another four weeks as I, unfortunately, still have a lot more extra baggage to get rid of...

Okay, it's been another 4 weeks and I am still going strong and have lost an additional 7 lbs (yippee!). I only walk at a medium/brisk pace for about 30-40 mins a day and the last 3 weeks I added a combined one-hour low impact aerobic/strength training session at the gym. I will be traveling for the next three weeks...so we will see if I can stay on track. Still more baggage to lose! See you in another 4 weeks...

The Doctor's Diet is a program developed by Dr. Travis L. Stork that presents very scary but necessary to know facts about obesity, then addresses the problem with a diet plan, motivations, and recipes. He breaks the plan down by Stat (starting to lose weight now) and then Restore and Maintain for long term goal achievement. The plan isn't about deprivation; rather, it's about understanding what you are eating and how it will affect your health.

The book starts by discussing the problems with obesity: health, motivation, even sleep issues that affect quality of life. He then discusses the Stat plan and how to get started on the diet. In depth discussions of protein, carbs, sugar, fat, veggies, fruit, nuts, legums, and yogurt help dieters understand the benefits of each of those types of foods. Then the book transitions into the Restore plan and how the better eating will affect your life - from a stronger heart, changes in blood sugar, better sleep, happier moods, lower risk of cancer and even a better family life. Finally, the Maintain section sets the diet up for a lifetime of good health and happy eating.

There are several recipes in the back but the bulk of the diet is understanding the various foods and putting together combinations that make the most sense for weight loss and energy. It's not about a set menu or eating a set item. The diet is very open ended - Dr. Stork has given you all the knowledge you need in the book to make the right choices when eating.

I found the text to be very motivating. There is so much more to weight loss than just beauty - it's really about living longer and better and he really helps explain how each choice makes a very specific difference health wise. Compelling facts and statistics even as simple as how greatly a 1/2 hour walk can be were very useful to push the need to get healthier.

The book is easy to follow but doesn't pander to the reader and really is health reward based. The plan is easy to follow and the weight comes off at a good pace - consistent but not too fast. In all, I really appreciate the book and find myself much more motivated to lose the extra pounds.

Received as an ARC from the publisher.

I didn't look up this book because I need to lose weight. I have only a few left to lose to reach the "ideal weight" according to my medical chart and I'm in no hurry. But I am reading on what a healthy diet is--because that's what's important to me, and because soon I have to think about not losing, but maintaining--which as I think everyone knows is the hard part. A 2011 New York Times article stated "more than 90 percent of people who lose a lot of weight gain it back."

The reason this isn't rated five stars is because I didn't take away from it much I didn't know before. This isn't for me a keeper, a must-purchase I'll refer to again and again. But it's eminently sensible--and that's rare enough in diet books--and structured in such a way, with enough choices, a person following the book may actually learn a healthy way to eat--not just simply follow a rigid meal plan. If you want to lose weight in a healthy way--you could do far, far worse than this book.

Having read on diet recently the different takes truly are crazy making. There are the Vegans and their ilk telling you meat and dairy and eggs are poison. Then there are the Paleo people telling you grains and legumes and soy--even fruit--are poison; oh, and the "Nighshade" veggies such as tomatoes and peppers eggplants are bad, and wrong. And both sides argue for their regimens with religious fervor.

What I like about Stork is that he promises to tell you when the science is conflicted or uncertain--such as the changing picture on soy and saturated fat--and I find that beyond refreshing. It makes him as far as I'm concerned far more trustworthy than all those diet gurus insisting you must follow their rules and eliminate a wide swathe of foods humans have eaten for millenia or it's your fault if you get cancer, heart disease or diabetes.

Very easy to follow. My boyfriend and I have been on it for 4 weeks and so far I lost 10 pounds and my BF lost 13 pound. But most importantly we feel great! This is not a temporary fix. This is a life change!

"You're following The Doctor's Diet because you want results, right? And you probably love the idea of fast results. Hey, who wouldn't?"

This book definitely reads like it was written by a TV host which got increasingly annoying. The target audience of this book is people wanting to lose weight, as described on the cover. I think that this book might work great for some people. It offers advice based on the most widely accepted nutrition research in the medical field and Dr. Stork is very positive and encouraging.

I wasn't reading this book to lose weight, I was mainly trying to understand what doctors know about nutrition.

For people looking to lose weight, if this book interests you, read this book and see if it works!

As an avid scientist searching for the truth, I was both encouraged and disheartened by the perspective on health that this book was based on.

Here are some things that bothered me the most:

1) Dr. Stork puts whole grains on a pedestal. But whole grains aren't always good for you. If you are looking to lose weight, eating whole-wheat bread isn't any better for you than white bread. Though whole grain bread might have more nutrients, it spikes blood sugar faster than white bread, worsening sugar addictions.

2) Dr. Stork bashes LDL cholesterol - This is a molecule that our body naturally makes. It has a vital purpose in our body, so we shouldn't be calling it "bad". All doctors seem to do this and it doesn't make sense to me. If we didn't have LDL, we wouldn't have a brain. What is actually bad is oxidized LDL, which can be produced in many ways, like blood sugar spikes. Normal LDL does your body NO harm, and is essential for our health. LDL levels are a poor predictor of heart disease, as recent research is now showing us.

3) Skim milk. This was probably one of the most disturbing things. Dr. Stork said that recent research shows that whole-milk is a healthier option than skim milk. I've seen the research articles and I couldn't agree more. But then he admits that he opts for skim milk and that we should too. What? No. Even for people wanting to lose weight, this doesn't make sense. Research shows that people who opt for whole milk actually have a healthier weight.

Here is one article published in one of the most prestigious journals: my link text

There were other things that I found misleading, but I won't go into detail. There were a few things that Dr. Stork said that were encouraging:

1) He encouraged eating grass-fed meat rather than factory-farmed meat. This is awesome. Many doctors don't bother distinguishing the health differences between different types of meat. Grass-fed, outdoor meat is certainly healthier option.

2) Saturated fat. His position on saturated fat was surprisingly balanced and accurate. Many doctors group saturated fats with trans fats, which is completely wrong.

In the grand scheme of things, these three annoyances won't make a huge difference. Compared to all the other diets out there, this one is pretty good. I think this diet might beat Weight Watchers and many of the other mainstream diets out there, but I don't believe that this is the holy grail of diets. Writing a book on eating the right food is tough. Our understanding of nutrition is changing so much, doctors and nutritionists are going to continue struggling to define what exactly humans are supposed to eat.

If I were to summarize this book, it would be this: restrict your calories, and eat healthy calories.

I agree with this premise, but it is debated how we should restrict calories and what "healthy" means.

One of the funniest books I've ever read! It was great....wait, what? They were serious? Oh. Well, then. Follow this plan and you'll absolutely lose weight. And probably your freedom, since you'll likely do murder for food. NO alternatives depending on amount of weight you have to lose, options given for categories of food lead to unrealistic combinations. For example, for breakfast, you could conceivably have a glass of (skim) milk and an apple. For lunch, you could have a cup of plain yogurt and 1/2 cup of two vegetables, and same for dinner, only with some oil to prepare of your veg and a piece of wheat toast, and 1/2 cup of milk for a snack. Not that you would. But you COULD...and less than 1,000 calories total on the STAT plan, which is the more stringent plan for the first two weeks. On that part of the plan, you can have fruit, but only apples, berries and grapefruit. No sugars, no sweeteners at all. It does expand on the next part and a little further on the maintenance plan, but not as much you'd think.

If you cut out all added sugars and sweeteners, I doubt you'd need any other diet plan. So just do that and save some time and money.

Seriously. Who eats plain yogurt?

I have to give this book five stars because I'm currently following the meal plan in it. And it works. I've lost 8 to 9kg in the almost four weeks I've been following it.

Here's the thing - I hate exercise - I always have, but the half hour amount you need to do each day according to this book has been easy for me. I walk and I dance. That's one of the things I loved about Doctor Stork and this book - he got me. In part of the book he wrote that it was okay to dance in your living room. That made exercise fun for me and, to me, that's an essential thing.

And the meals are yummy - sure you have odd things like barley to eat, but in the scheme of things, I eat better now than I ever have in my life. My pallet is expanding and I like the thought of that as well.

The book itself was a fun read. Dr Stork's personality shone through and it was great. It was a dry as dust book, it was actually the complete opposite.

I realize that not all diets work for everyone, but this one works for me and I have to recommend that to anyone who wants to lose wait to give it a try. Like me, it just may work for you.

This book includes conclusive research in the nutritional sciences and with a detailed bibliography. According to Stork, who is an emergency room doctor, the biggest problems in the E.R., are due to the food we choose to eat. Reducing the excess belly fat is an important goal of The Doctor’s Diet. The book is designed in with 3 stages of the STAT program. Part 1 includes the 14-day STAT plan. In other words, the STAT plan is started immediately. After that he outlines the Restore Plan, and the Maintain Plan. Recipes are also included.

The biggest hindrance to his diet plan for mid-westerners is not having the inexpensive access to fresh produce and seafood. Although, he does mention using frozen produce that is packaged without excess sugar.

Recommended for public libraries. Also recommended for academic libraries with nutritional sciences curriculum collections.

Very smart advice, underpinned with solid research and rationale written in plain English. I've applied the ideas and have benefitted; this has changed the way I think about purchase and consume food. The writing can be somewhat repetitive and the author at times overwrought, but the ideas are worth reading through all of that. Another reason for the 4 stars is the recipe section - it's far too basic and boring and it didn't need to be. There are a multitude of good recipes one can leverage within the nutritional guidelines listed by Dr. Stork. I would love to see the author team. With some professional chefs and create some really delicious recipes using these very smart and highly applicable concepts.

I am not even going to pretend that I didn't read this book because of cutie pie, Dr. Stork. On a serious note, I thought this book provided accurate information concerning obesity and what problems we are facing as a nation. The plans are clear and concise, but don't necessarily provide new information on living a healthy active lifestyle. Take the time to read it and refresh your memory of what a healthy lifestyle can do for you and your family.

I am a fan of Dr Stork and that's probably the main reason I picked this up. There are some great recipes in here but I don't think that I would be following the diet. (I already don't eat gluten, chocolate and I have cut out almost all sugar from my diet, so I guess it's not too different).

I enjoyed the information more for this one. It was a really interesting read.

"The Doctors" was an Emmy award-winning television show, and Travis Stork was the host. "The Doctor's Diet" is a guide on eating well and losing weight. Dr. Stork has a series of "prescriptions" that he makes to help you lose weight and keep it off.

Dr. Stork provides meal plans and ideas for recipes. He has two programs that he outlines in this book; the STAT plan and the RESTORE plan. Make no mistake; if you follow the plans faithfully, you will lose weight. There isn't any way you couldn't given the portion sizes he suggests. The book intends a complete reboot of your nutritional choices.

Dr. Stork comes across as a charismatic man. When television personalities write things, it tends to have a particular tone, and this book is no exception. I liked this book for several reasons. First off, he has a familiar expression as though he is talking to you personally. Second, he acknowledges Nutrition Science as a confusing mishmash of information. Third, he gives concrete suggestions.

I bought this book from Barnes & Noble, but I don't remember the exact date. As I said, Nutrition Science is confusing, and I don't know if any enormous changes came about in the last decade.

This book is a great informative book for those who want to know more about a healthy, nutritional diet. This would be a good book for middle school to high school children who are interested in health information. The book goes into detail about what your body needs and provides healthy examples to accomplish it. It also tells you the benefits of losing weight. It gives you recipes and other alternatives to help with cravings and even gives you a layout of what you could do to start your weight loss journey.

I enjoyed reading this book and appreciated that complex material was presented in a way that I could understand it. I copied a lot of the non-meat recipes and have made them, they were very simple but good. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading weight loss books.

I picked this book up because I've heard great things about it via The Doctor's TV show. It piqued my interest so I decided to give it a try. There are A LOT of health issues within my extended family. Everything from high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attacks, obesity, etc. Most of their health problems are direct results of poor life choices, i.e: poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking and drinking. I'm a wife and mother and I want to be healthy for as long as possible for my family. I also want my family to be healthy as well. I don't want to go down the same road as so many in my family have gone down. Because of that I took control of my health a few years ago, started eating healthy and working out regularly. But after having a baby a year ago, the pounds slowly crept back on and some healthy habits fell by the wayside. This book was the swift kick in the behind that I really needed.

This book is a fast and easy read. I found it very enjoyable, and interesting. There's so much info on how food affects the body, in good and bad ways, and the illnesses and diseases that we can avoid simply by eating how nature intended us to. I don't view this as a "diet," rather a lifestyle. Yes, the first two phases require some restrictions, but if you want to shed some pounds, you have to cut some things out of your diet. But once you make it to the maintain plan you have endless options, all of which are healthy enjoyable foods that your body needs to thrive.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I want to live as long as possible with little to no health issues along the way. I don't want to be on 30 different medications to keep me alive, or have to prick my finger 5 times a day to check my blood sugar, or have to sleep sitting up because I can't breathe at night. Food is medicine, there's no two ways about that. And if you're remotely interested in improving your health and your life, then you should read this book and follow the plans. I'm currently into my first week of the STAT plan and the food is great. My husband and I tend to eat healthy (most of the time) so these foods are all favorites and familiar to us. But if you tend to eat a lot of deep fried, or sugary foods, this might be a little tougher in the beginning for you but it's so worth it. Think of how much your body will thank you in the long run. You only get one go at this life thing and one body to do it in, so you should want to make it count!

I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway and was anxious to begin reading. There are so many diet books out on the market that tend promote fad diets. This one does not. What Dr. Stork does is provide an eating plan that focuses on real foods. The eating plan is similar to an exchange plan. Serving of protein & fruit for breakfast, Serving of protein & vegetables for lunch, etc. with some flexibility built in. He also gives you 10 prescriptions to follow, like reduce the amount of sugar in your diet and get rid of artificial sweeteners. Not only does he provide these prescriptions but provides the science behind them. He also recognizes that making these changes will not happen overnight but is something needs to be worked on over time. The real test of a diet book is how well can you follow the plan. I am now on my third day of the plan and I have to say that I do not feel deprived, I am satisfied with what I am eating and the amount I am eating. I have a busy weekend ahead where I will be eating out several times, so that will be the real test. The book is easy to read. It's as if he is speaking to you in an warm friendly manner, just like he does on his TV show. My take away from this book is that even if you don't lose a pound you will improve your health by following this plan.

I unfortunately cannot start this review with "I lost so much weight!" since I read it in a few days. I absolutely love the TV show "The Doctor's", and this book actually reads the way Dr Travis Stork speaks on the show. He uses a shock tactic in the beginning to grab the reader in, and even though the book claims to not want to "scare" the audience into starting the diet, it's sort of what it does. You will peer at that chocolate bar suspiciously, let me tell you.

Also, finally, a diet book that doesn't urge you to quit gluten. The sections on the food and nutritional values were very informative. Even if you do not follow the diet, this book helps a lot in understanding the ways that nutrition and exercise can have an effect on your body.

While losing weight is a large component in the book, becoming healthier is Stork's main point. I don't regret reading this book at all and I know it will have an overall positive effect on my attitude!

I would like to thank the publishers, as well as Netgalley, for the free ARC of this book to review.

Dr. Travis has a great blueprint for lifestyle change in this book. Recipes, meal equations, and listed benefits of whole foods are incredibly helpful and easily attainable. Although the diet-specifics impressed me, not much else did. Dr. Travis seems to randomly choose facts to provide evidence for, and as a person who likes proof and knows the value of research, I was disappointed. Additionally, the book was really tough for me to read all the way through. I thought that the color schemes, layout, and overly-conversational writing style were tacky. Overall, I would (and already have) recommend the recipes in this book, but would not recommend it as a fact-based, intriguing read.

I am not really impressed with this book or the diet plan within it. It is not dreadful - but it is nothing new and not really well done. There are lots of different names for the parts of the diet - the STAT Plan Meal Equations and Flex-Time Food Choices and the Restore Plan and the Maintain Plan, but it really is nothing new and the recipes are very simple and rely on lots of canned and frozen items and the diet plans are in charts that have very tiny print that cannot be enlarged and is very difficult to read on the kindle. I received this book free to review from Netgalley.

I have been perusing ARC diet books to help me lose weight. I like this one because it includes a lot of health information about why this plan is good for you and will help you. It also has a diet where serving sizes are spelled pout which is helpful when making your own menus. So you wont have to eat some meals that you would never think of eating and end up buying a large bottle of something that you will never use again.

The recipes in the book are very good too. All around this is the best diet book I have come across, and I have looked at a lot them!

Similar to the many diet books out there but also this books adds a flexible easy to follow program that focuses on life changes rather than following strict dietary rules. Dr. Travis also points out like others how our food sources contain so much that is bad for us and is evident in the dramatic rise in obesity and related afflictions such as diabetes. Like anything if one is committed to the change results will show in time. Dr. Travis helps in breaking things down to make them easy to understand and follow.

Wonderful information for any one with a heart....or lungs...or a colon...or a brain.
You get the idea.
I read through the book and have just started implementing the information as a diet so I am unable to testify to the diet's weight lose ability.
However, I am very impressed with the information written. I recommend everyone read through the book and use the knowledge to make better food choices. It will influence the way you approach the dinner table.

I got this ebook from Bird Street Books and NetGalley.com.

I would give this book 3.5

I did enjoy this book but I mainly wanted to read it for my mom to see if it would be something that she would enjoy. She likes to watch The Doctor's tv show and I am planning on buying this book for her. Dr. Travis Stork has some great ideas and if you willing to change your life then its do able.

Dr. Travis Stork, who is the co-host of "The Doctor",has written a wonderful book about the reality of how bad we eat. The book provides diet plans, motivation, and recipes to help you stay on track. It is well written and there are a lot of people following his diet.

Good Guide

Good Guide

I would rather have this in hard copy.
Easy to understand with good scientific evidence as well as personal experiences; without too many of them.
Excellent guidelines to healthy living anyone can follow.

A fast and easy read. What I found most helpful was the cancer info. Couldn't believe how linked obesity and what we ate were related to the toxicity of cancer. But after reading, it made perfect sense.
