Countless years of war nearly destroyed Orden, until the Last Army established peace. Now, decades later, the thriving world will be tested as magic is introduced. An unlikely group will be forced to work together to find the truth behind a power that has been held secret for sixteen years. A newly appointed Marshal, a barmaid, a street-wise orphan, and an elf (who shouldn't exist), are Orden's best chance to prevent the chaos from returning to the land.
This first installment in the series, is a fast paced adventure with just a dash of the American Old West, that may contain a surprise or two.
David Ryan's first entry into a proposed trilogy is not what you'd expect from a fantasy novel. Yes, there are swords and a variety of characters with human and non-human populating the world. And there is magic, but that's the fun part. Magic is not a standard, known quantity in this world.
The task Ryan set before himself was to introduce magic into a fantasy world that did not know it existed. While there are a scant number of practitioners revealed in this novel, we get the sense that the ramifications will be huge.
The world is finely crafted, a Western-style landscape that reminded me of King's "Dark Tower" series. Here, however, the Marshals still run the show.
This is a debut, so Gann's Departure is not perfect, but it is exciting.
